Pakistan and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is said to have reached an "agreement" unlocking over a $1 billion loan tranche under Extended Fund Facility (EFF) that had been stalled for the last five months, the country's local media outlet Geo News reported.

Secretary of Finance Hamed Sheikh, in a statement released late Thursday night, said that "an agreement has already been struck with the IMF on prerequisite measures”. He added that the IMF mission which is headed by Nathan Porter will now release a detailed statement after getting approval from Washington.

However, since then the package has been delayed after the controversy over $1.5 billion subsidy package announced by Khan which IMF asked how Pakistan will fund.

Pakistan's former military ruler General Pervez Musharraf's mortal remains arrived here on a special flight from Dubai and he will be buried in the Army Cantonment area where all arrangements have been completed, officials said.

Pakistan's former military ruler Pervez Musharraf’s body arrives in Karachi

Pervez Musharraf was a polarising figure in Pakistan. Even after death, Pakistanis are divided on his legacy. Reports say, the former military ruler may not get a state funeral. Molly Gambhir reports.

Gravitas: Pakistan divided on Musharraf's legacy

A suicide bomber blew himself in a mosque in Peshawar in one of the deadliest terror attacks Pakistan has seen in recent history. Over 100 men, including police officers and civilians, were killed. Pakistani terror group Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) is believed to have carried it out. The continuous onslaught of TTP has made Pakistan so desperate for help that it is now looking towards the Afghan Taliban for intervention in the matter. But there is a grim chance of any help. Here's why nobody will help Pakistan fight the home-grown Taliban: 1) Afghanistan: Pakistan has sought Afghan Taliban Chief Haibuttallah Akhundzada’s help to rein in the outlawed Pakistani Taliban. This a desperate move by Pakistan, but the TTP and Afghan Taliban are fundamentally the same organization so there is little hope of help from Afghanistan against the TTP. 2) China: Pakistan may look towards its friend China, hoping that China can at least convince the Afghan Taliban to push for a ceasefire between the Pakistan Army and the TTP. But if China interferes, it can jeopardise its interests at Pakistan’s Gwadar port which is the heart of the $50 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and the most significant culmination point for China's Belt and Road Initiative. Chinese citizens in Gwadar are already under threat to vacate the area by local political outfits. China has major stakes and there is little to no chance that China will interfere. 3) Pakistan could consider repeating its joint military operation Zarb-e-Azb from 2014 when nearly 3,500 militants were eliminated. But the operation took a major toll on Pakistan as well. Over 500 Pakistani soldiers lost their lives during Zarb-e-Azb and nearly one million people were displaced from their homes. Given Pakistan’s current financial crisis – it cannot consider such an operation again. WATCH | Inside South Asia: Poverty, Hunger, Malnutrition: The story of Afghanistan × 4) US: Pakistan may look towards engaging with the US and asking for help, but again there is no chance the US would intervene in any conflict involving the Taliban or Afghanistan. In 2021, after 20 long years - the US exited Afghanistan by signing a deal with the Taliban under the Doha Agreement. Launching an offensive against the TTP to help Pakistan will jeopardise US’ deal with the Taliban and the US doesn’t want any of that. 5) Finally, Pakistan has the option of negotiating directly with the TTP which basically means agreeing to their demands. The TTP has clear goals: Enforce Shariah law in Pakistan; establish a unified front to maintain Afghan Taliban control in Afghanistan; and conduct defensive jihad against Pakistani security forces. Ultimately, the group seeks to overthrow the Pakistani government and establish an Islamic caliphate in Pakistan. TTP is gunning for the Pakistan army and is believed to have carried out 140 attacks in Pakistan in the past three months with close to 10,000 cadres based in Afghanistan and the Pashtun tribal areas of Pakistan. Seems like Pakistan is stuck with the monster they created with no escape. (Disclaimer: The views of the writer do not represent the views of WION or ZMCL. Why nobody will help Pakistan fight home-grown Taliban

Pervez Musharraf, the former president of Pakistan, was laid to rest on Tuesday (Feb 7) in Karachi. What's left for India is his ambiguous legacy. In an interview with WION, the former envoy to Pakistan from 2017 to 2020, Ajay Bisaria, discussed how Musharraf, the former military dictator, had “a mind of a guerrilla," with surprise and deceit as his weapons.

Bisaria, who was also an aide to former Indian prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee during Musharraf years, termed him a "general who changed his stripes."

He stated how Musharraf, the architect of the Kargil war, was "humiliated" when Nawaz Sharif withdrew Pakistani troops from Kargil following a meeting with then-US president Bill Clinton.

Ambassador Bisaria said combination of factors prompted the military coup in Pakistan, led by Musharraf.

At the time, he had suffered a twin blow: when Sharif named General Ziauddin Butt as the army chief and when he withdrew troops from Kargil.

Musharraf revolted and seized power.

A setback for India at this time was the 1999 swap of passengers from hijacked Indian Airlines plane in Kandahar, Afghanistan, with three notorious terrorists.

But interestingly enough, India decided to give Musharraf another chance, he added.

This time, the trio of Vajpayee, LK Advani, and Jaswant Singh met for lunch and agreed to “read the dictator's mind” by extending an invitation for him to visit India. But Musharraf once more “overplayed his hand about Kashmir” during his meeting.

Once more, the peace initiative was derailed, the ambassador told WION.

Musharraf shifts gear after 9/11

Just a few months after the 9/11 attacks in the US, the Indian Parliament suffered a terror assault and India conducted Operation Parakram, a troop buildup against Pakistan.

Envoy Bisaraia said this prompted Musharraf to promise that Pakistan's territory would not be used against India.

When Vajpayee and Musharraf met in Srinagar in 2003, the envoy stressed that cross-border terrorism decreased and diplomatic ties grew stronger. But the diplomacy took place mostly out of public sight, he added.

Musharraf continued to meet with Manmohan Singh as the prime minister later in 2004. Another important step was the four-point strategy. But with the 2006 Mumbai train attacks, he “lost the plot with India,” the former envoy said. “His early sins could not be forgiven,” he added.

Musharraf and his “beloved homeland”

Ambassador Bisaria noted that both Musharraf's desire to recast himself as a politician and his ambition to become a general who might bring about peace remained unfulfilled.

On Musharraf's orders, Pakistani troops surrounded the Lal Masjid in Islamabad on July 3, 2007. It was a confrontation between Islamist militants and the Pakistani government. It gave rise to Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which has led countless fatal attacks in Pakistan.

Musharraf's declaration of a state of emergency in 2007 was surrounded by controversy. He rendered dozens of judges dysfunctional and took oath as President.

Musharraf resigned from his position in 2008 after the ruling coalition threatened to impeach him.

In 2013, Musharraf was once more preparing for elections, but he was forbidden and charged with treason. The former president requested one-time permission to go overseas for medical reasons. He departed for Dubai with a promise to return to his "beloved homeland." But the former military ruler never set foot in Pakistan again. He passed away from amyloidosis in Dubai on 5 February.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday ordered the immediate restoration of the Wikipedia website that was banned by the country's telecom regulator last week citing failure to remove "sacrilegious content." Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) on Wednesday warned Wikipedia of blocking its services if it failed to adhere to their order.

“The action was taken because some of the content is still available on Wikipedia after the expiry of a 48-hour deadline,” Malahat Obaid, spokesperson for Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, told Bloomberg.

Even before the blanket ban of the website, the country's telecom authority degraded Wikipedia services countrywide. In the most recent development, the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) handout published on February 6 stated that Shehbaz held discussions with a committee of the ministries to conduct an initial investigation.

The handout also said that the committee met and that its members discussed how Wikipedia supported the dissemination of knowledge and information for the public, students, and the academics. “Blocking the site in its entirety was not a suitable measure to restrict access to some objectionable content,” the PMO statement said. “The unintended consequences of this blanket ban, therefore, outweigh its benefits.”

After committee's recommendations, PM Shehbaz ordered the website's quick restoration and established a special cabinet committee including the ministries of law, information, commerce, and communication under the leadership of Aminul Haque, the IT minister.
