Pakistan's former prime minister Imran Khan has alleged that former army chief Gen (retd) Qamar Javed Bajwa pressurised him to extend friendship with neighbouring India. Khan suggested that apparently, Bajwa wanted to develop cordial relations with New Delhi.

Dunya News reported on Saturday (April 1) that the chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party spoke to journalists in Lahore and also claimed that Bajwa was not a man of principles.

Khan said that Bajwa said something one day and then retracted it the next day.

India and Pakistan share complex ties with relations often impacted by cross-border terrorism, ceasefire violations, territorial disputes, and more.

Both India and Pakistan have reiterated their desire for a peaceful neighbourhood. Earlier this month, Islamabad had again denied it was holding any "back channel" talks with bordering India.

Media reports noted that Foreign Office spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch, responded to a question at a weekly briefing to answer that "at this stage, there is no back channel (talks) between Pakistan and India".

News agency Reuters had reported that there was a prospect for a potential breakthrough in relations when the two nations reportedly held secret discussions in 2021.

While talking about the political situation, the PTI chairman said if the elections were not held in 90 days, there would be no constitution left in the country and then he would take direct action.

This comes as the Pakistani government hurried to comply with IMF requirements in order to secure a much-needed bailout. Moreover, the future of almost 20,000 workers is in jeopardy as nearly all of the country's 30 mobile phone assembly plants, including three operated by international brands, have to stop working.

The assembly units remained closed as manufacturers claim that they have run out of raw materials due to import restrictions. After paying workers half of their April salary in advance, the majority of businesses have placed them on hold. The employees have been informed that they will be contacted once manufacturing starts again.

Pakistan's government Twitter account has been withheld in India due to a 'legal demand', informed the microblogging site on Thursday. Anyone attempting to view the tweets on the handle was directed to a blank page with the message, "Account Withheld @GovtofPakistan's account has been withheld in India in response to a legal demand." According to Twitter's official statement, when such a message is displayed, Twitter is compelled to withhold the original tweet in response to a valid legal demand, such as a court order. "If we receive a valid and properly scoped request from an authorised entity, it may be necessary to withhold access to certain content in a particular country from time to time," reads Twitter's official policy. "Such withholdings will be limited to the specific jurisdiction that has issued the valid legal demand or where the content has been found to violate local law(s)." The policy adds that the US-based company notifies the affected user (in this case the Pakistan government) unless they are prohibited by the court. "Upon receipt of requests to withhold content, we will promptly notify affected users unless we are prohibited from doing so (ex: if we receive a court order under seal). When content has been withheld, we also clearly indicate within the product and publish requests to withhold content on Lumen—unless, similar to our practice of notifying users, we are prohibited from doing so." Pakistan's upper house on Thursday approved a set of legislation that limits some key powers of the Supreme Court’s chief justice. The Supreme Court Practice and Procedure Bill 2023 was passed with 60 votes in favor, while the bill was opposed by 19 senators from the main opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party and the religiopolitical Jamaat-e-Islami, who called it "unconstitutional."

Pakistan's Senate passes bill to limit top judge's power

Pakistan's Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar on Tuesday tabled the Supreme Court (Practice and Procedure) Bill, 2023 aimed to limit the discretionary powers to take suo motu notice by the chief justice of Pakistan, Geo News reported.

The house has sent the proposed bill to the National Assembly (NA) Standing Committee on Law and Justice for further approval which will meet on Wednesday morning under the chair of Chaudhry Mahmood Bashir Virk.

The committee will send it back to the lower house. After the NA passes the bill, it will be sent to the Senate for approval.

The decision of Pakistan's government comes a day after two Supreme Court judges -- Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah and Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail raised questions over the powers of the Chief Justice of Pakistan. The two judges said the apex court "cannot be dependent on the solitary decision of one man, the Chief Justice."

The court must be regulated through a rule-based system approved by all judges of the court under Article 191 of the Constitution," Justice Shah and Justice Mandokhail wrote in a 27-page dissenting note for the apex court's March 1 verdict in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa suo motu.

In his speech on the floor of the house during the National Assembly session, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif sought parliamentary action in this regard. He termed the dissenting note "a ray of hope," as per the Geo News report.

Shehbaz Sharif said, "The voices for change stemming from the judiciary itself is certainly a ray of hope for the country." Sharif's party Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz has accused the judiciary of "bench-fixing," as per the news report.

While speaking on the floor of the house, Pakistan's Law minister Azam Nazeer Tarar said that the Supreme Court's reputation was damaged due to the actions taken in the name of suo moto notices.

"We have even seen that era when suo motu notices were taken on trivial matters [...] also, in the past, several review cases were delayed and not fixed for hearing," Azam Nazeer Tarar said.

Tarar said that the dissenting note of the two judges has led to further concern. He stated that the decisions taken under suo motu notices could not be appealed earlier. He further said, "It is important to give the chance to appeal an order and the parliament has always demanded that the right to appeal should be given."

The bill includes shifting the powers of taking suo motu notice from the chief justice to a three-member committee comprising three senior judges.

Pakistan's Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar on Tuesday tabled the Supreme Court (Practice and Procedure) Bill, 2023 aimed to limit the discretionary powers to take suo motu notice by the chief justice of Pakistan, Geo News reported.

The two judges said the apex court "cannot be dependent on the solitary decision of one man, the Chief Justice." The court must be regulated through a rule-based system approved by all judges of the court under Article 191 of the Constitution," Justice Shah and Justice Mandokhail wrote in a 27-page dissenting note for the apex court's March 1 verdict in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa suo motu. He further said, "It is important to give the chance to appeal an order and the parliament has always demanded that the right to appeal should be given." The bill includes shifting the powers of taking suo motu notice from the chief justice to a three-member committee comprising three senior judges. Furthermore, the bill includes a clause regarding the right of challenging the decision which could be filed within 30 days and will be fixed for a hearing in two weeks' time. According to the bill, every clause, appeal or matter before the Supreme Court shall be heard and disposed of by a bench formed by the committee comprising the Chief Justice of Pakistan and two senior judges. India's National Security Adviser (NSA) Ajit Doval took what is widely seen as pot shots at China and Pakistan while addressing NSAs and top officials of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) member countries on Wednesday in Indian capital city of New Delhi. Doval touched upon terrorism and sovereignty as the key parts of his opening remarks, apparently hinting at the two countries that have strained relations with India. As the present chair of the grouping, Doval's statement set the tone for the meeting as Pakistan and China attended the event virtually, according to multiple media reports “Terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, and its financing are amongst the most serious threats to international peace and security. Any act of terrorism, regardless of its motivation, is unjustifiable," said Doval, in what is seen by observers as a veiled reference to Pakistan. He continued the subtle attacks by taking a dig at China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) which passes through Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The 78-year-old added that India was willing to participate in regional projects, but only if there was transparency. “While expanding connectivity, it is important to ensure that such initiatives are consultative, transparent and participatory, and respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries.” WATCH | NSA Ajit Doval at SCO-NSA meet: Terrorism a serious threats to international peace × After the meeting of NSAs, New Delhi is expected to hold a meeting of the SCO defence ministers next month from April 27-29. The foreign ministers' meet is scheduled to be held in the western Indian state of Goa from May 4-5. All of these meetings will culminate with the SCO Summit, set to be held in July. SCO was founded over 20 years ago to promote economic, political, and military cooperation among its member countries. The organisation's members include Russia, India, China, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. SCO covers over 60 per cent of the Eurasian landmass, 40 per cent of the world population, and 30 per cent of the global GDP. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:
