Rashmi Samant, the first Indian who was elected as the President of the Oxford Student Union (SU), has alleged in her new book titled ‘A Hindu in Oxford’ that the institute was racist towards Indians and was Hinduphobic.

Sawant was elected as the first female Indian Oxford University Student Union (OUSU) President in February 2021.

The book details the events following her election and subsequent resignation over the allegations of anti-semitic, racist and transphobic comments.

Speaking to ANI news agency, Sawant claimed that Indians face a “lot of discrimination and hatred” and they aren’t given a platform to express their grievances in public domain.

She further said that the professors specifically targeted her at the university, claiming that they questioned her holding the office of president citing her religious and ethnic backgrounds.

<h2>'Oxford is Hinduphobic'</h2>

She said that when she stepped down from her post in February of 2021, the matter would have reached the stage of “conviction” “if they had not found somebody who looked an Indian to take over (from her)”.

After Sawant stepped down, Anvee Bhutani, an Indian Hindu, was subsequently elected as the President of the Oxford University Students Union.

Responding to Avnee’s claims that she didn’t face any discrimination, Sawant said, “Avnee is doing a disservice to the movement (on campus) by playing down the trauma that somebody else has lived through.”

“She has no proof to back her claim.&nbsp;It was an act to defame me and to play down the seriousness of racism abroad for ulterior motives. During the British era also we saw a lot of people from Bharatiya origin who used to defend the British as it was something positive for the Indian people. All they are doing is lying and lapping up to the expectations of the British,” she said.

<h2>Samant stepped down in 2021</h2>

Just months into being elected, Samant had to resign after her old social media posts surfaced online that allegedly were racist and anti-semitic in nature.

According to reports, Samant was accused of racism after she captioned a photo of herself in Malaysia with the words 'Ching Chang' and also posted an insensitive caption on a photo of the Holocaust memorial in Berlin.

While Samant claimed that she was removed due to “racially-motivated reason”, the university clarified that the decision had nothing to do with Samant’s religion or race.

It sparked a campaign to choose it as the Oxford Word of the Year, with the PC Gamer magazine urging readers to "put aside our petty disputes and vote for 'goblin mode' over 'metaverse' because 'goblin mode rules'."

Given that many of us occasionally experience goblin-like feelings, it may be difficult to challenge such rationale.

In a year that organisers dubbed "more divided than ever," the public has for the first time selected the word of the year.

With 14,484 votes, metaverse came in second, followed by #IStandWith with 8,639 votes.

Susie Dent, a television language specialist, declared her support for #IStandWith.

Vax was the word of the year before, reflecting the interest in vaccinations that had grown since the introduction of a coronavirus vaccine.

The Hong Kong Journalists Association is one of the last major professional groups in Hong Kong advocating fundamental rights and media freedoms, following the enactment in June 2020 of a controversial national security law by Chinese authorities.

The law attracts criticism as a tool of repression in Hong Kong. The law was passed after massive pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong in the year 2019. China claims that the law has brought stability.

The HKJA has been under pressure to disband from pro-Beijing media outlets who accuse it of being an anti-China organisation with ties to overseas groups such as the National Endowment for Democracy - claims the HKJA has denied.

University of Oxford is ready to bring a historic change for a woman from Vietnam who has made a huge donation of £155 million to the institution.<o:p></o:p>

"After receiving the first donation of £50m, we will approach the privy council to ask for permission to change our name from Linacre College to Thao College in recognition of this landmark gift."

Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao is the chief of Sovico Group and is popular as the richest woman of Vietnam. She donated £155 million to the college in an act of good faith.<o:p></o:p>

Linacre College was founded in 1962 and is named after the Renaissance humanist, medical scientist and classicist Thomas Linacre.&nbsp;Authorities are planning to use this donation to pay for a new graduate center and also access scholarships.

A UK study has discovered that combining one dosage of the AstraZeneca vaccine with a dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine produces strong immunological responses, as measured by blood tests, in recent experiments.&nbsp;

According to the study conducted by Oxford University, 'mixed' schedules of these vaccines induced high concentrations of antibodies against the SARS-CoV2 spike IgG protein when doses were administered four weeks apart.

The study discovered significant differences in antibody levels against the virus based on the vaccinations administered.

While two doses of Pfizer were most effective, one injection of Oxford vaccine followed by a Pfizer booster was nearly as effective.&nbsp;

The results also showed that those who have already had two doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine may have a higher immune response if a different vaccination is given as a booster if it is required.&nbsp;

Only a few of the vaccination combinations that can be used have been studied.

However, if combining vaccinations is found to be safe and effective, it might help speed up the process of protecting billions of people.&nbsp;

A new trial involving the use of the anti-parasitic drug ‘Ivermectin’, for use in cases involving people at a higher risk of serious illness from <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/coronavirus">COVID-19</a>, has been announced by a team of researchers from Oxford University.

Aiming to investigate the efficacy and safety of the drug, the trial has already recruited more than 5,000 volunteers.

Earlier this year, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended against the use of Ivermectin, in treating patients with Covid.

According to the WHO, there is a "very low certainty of evidence" relating to the drug’s effect on mortality, the requirement of a patient’s admission to a hospital and ridding a patient of the virus.

"Safety and efficacy are important when using any drug for a new indication. WHO recommends against the use of ivermectin for COVID-19 except within clinical trials," said Soumya Swaminathan, the global health body’s chief scientist, in a tweet published on May 10 which has been since deleted.

While previous studies on the drug’s usage show that early administration with ivermectin can help reduce viral load and the duration of symptoms in some patients with a mild case of Covid, such studies have generally been small or of low quality. 
 
Despite all this, Ivermectin has been used by self-medicating individuals and doctors in many countries including, Brazil, Bolivia, Peru and South Africa. 
 
"Ivermectin is readily available globally, has been in wide use for many other infectious conditions so it’s a well-known medicine with a good safety profile, and because of the early promising results in some studies it is already being widely used to treat COVID-19 in several countries,"&nbsp;Professor Chris Butler, from the University Oxford’s Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences, said in a statement. 
 
"By including Ivermectin in a large-scale trial, we hope to generate robust evidence to determine how effective the treatment is against COVID-19, and whether there are benefits or harms associated with its use," he added.

As part of the trial, more than 5,000 volunteers from across the UK&nbsp;will randomly be assigned to receive a three-day course of the Ivermectin treatment. This will be followed for 28 days, and a comparison will be done between the volunteers receiving the drug and the rest who will be receiving the usual standard of National Health Service care.&nbsp;

Oxford to study anti-parasitic drug Ivermectin's efficacy for Covid treatment

One shot of the Oxford/AstraZeneca or Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine reduces coronavirus infections by nearly two-thirds and protects older and more vulnerable people as much as younger, healthy individuals, a study has found.

The results from Oxford University and the Office for National Statistics are a welcome boost to the vaccination programme and the first to show the impact on new infections and immune responses in a large group of adults in the general population.

By driving down rates of infection the vaccines will not only prevent hospitalisations and deaths but help break chains of transmission and so reduce the risk of a damaging resurgence of disease as the UK reopens.

The researchers analysed Covid test results from more than 350,000 people in the UK between December and April. They found that 21 days after a first jab – the time it takes the immune system to mount a decent response – new Covid infections dropped by 65 per cent.

The vaccines were more effective against symptomatic than asymptomatic infections, reducing rates by 72&nbsp;per cent&nbsp;and 57&nbsp;per cent&nbsp;respectively, compared with those seen in the unvaccinated population.

A second shot of the&nbsp;Pfizer&nbsp;vaccine boosted protection further, causing symptomatic infections to fall by 90&nbsp;per cent&nbsp;and asymptomatic infections by 70 per cent. Because the Oxford vaccine was approved and rolled out later, it is too early to assess the impact of those second doses.

Scientists on the team said the findings supported the UK’s decision to prioritise giving first shots to elderly and more vulnerable people by delaying second doses. “There was no evidence that the vaccines were less effective among older adults or those with long-term health conditions,” said Dr Koen Pouwels, a researcher on the team.

The results, released in a preprint on Friday, are particularly important because they demonstrate the protective effect of the vaccines in the real world against the highly infectious and more lethal Kent variant, which was not around during the original clinical trials.

Further work by the team, reported in a second preprint, analysed antibody responses to the vaccines. Antibodies rose faster and to a higher level with one shot of Pfizer vaccine, but then dropped back down, particularly in older people, to a similar level reached with the Oxford shot. Although the immune responses differed, Dr David Eyre at Oxford’s Big Data Institute said a strong antibody response was achieved in 95&nbsp;per cent&nbsp;of people.

In younger people, one shot of vaccine raised antibodies to levels seen after infection with Covid, while in older people this took two doses. “Our findings highlight the importance of individuals getting the second vaccine for increased protection,” Eyre said.

The results build on other positive findings from the vaccine rollout, which began in December. In February&nbsp;Public Health Scotland revealed&nbsp;that a month after receiving a shot of Pfizer or Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine, the risk of hospitalisation from Covid-19 fell by up to 85% and 94% respectively.

In a&nbsp;separate report&nbsp;released on Thursday, the ONS said that in recent weeks the percentage of people testing positive for coronavirus appeared to have levelled off, both in those who deal with patients and those who don’t. Adults and school-age children were having more contact with people outside their households as schools reopened and some restrictions eased, it added.

Sarah Crofts, a senior statistician at the ONS, said: “It’s good news that infection rates in both patient-facing and non-patient-facing job roles have remained low since decreasing from the start of the year, but it’s critical that we continue to monitor Covid-19 infection levels in these roles as more restrictions ease.”

South African health experts have suggested vaccinating several thousand people with AstraZeneca's Covid-19 vaccine to assess whether it protects against severe cases of a virus variant that emerged in the country.

Authorities delayed the start of a much-anticipated vaccination campaign -- expected to begin this week with the first batch of one million AstraZeneca/Oxford doses -- after a study showed the jabs failed to prevent mild and moderate infection from the South African variant.

The temporary suspension, announced late on Sunday, put a damper on the imminent rollout and stoked criticism of the coronavirus response in Africa's hardest-hit nation.

Top government advisor and leading epidemiologist Salim Abdool Karim said his team had suggested still using the AstraZeneca shots in a more staggered manner -- starting with a smaller population group and closely studying their response.

"We would (first) vaccinate about 100,000 people or so to monitor hospitalisation (rates)," Karim told AFP on Monday, adding that the process would take "a few weeks".&nbsp;

"While we are rolling out the vaccine and collecting that information... we will be able to assess whether to continue."

Karim explained it was "prudent" to push back the wider distribution of AstraZeneca shots until scientists ascertain whether they could still prevent severe disease, hospitalisation and death.

He assured delay would be "partially compensated" by another batch of vaccines developed by US drugmaker Johnson &amp; Johnson expected to land next week.

Vaccine 'portfolio'

The proposal will be fine-tuned with the government over the coming days.

South Africa's Health Minister Zweli Mkhize told local media on Monday that an "implementation study" of AstraZeneca would take place alongside the rollout of Johnson &amp; Johnson jabs.

Tests will be done "on the people that are getting the (AstraZeneca) vaccination," Mkhize said on SAFM radio.

South Africa has lagged behind the global vaccination race and only received its first vaccines on February 1.

The one million AstraZeneca shots were produced by the Serum Institute of India, from which an additional 500,000 doses are expected this month.

The country aims to inoculate at least 67 per cent of its population by the end of the year, or around 40 million people.&nbsp;

Some 1.2 million health workers will be first in line.

In addition to AstraZeneca and Johnson &amp; Johnson, vaccines have been secured from US drugmaker Pfizer, the WHO-backed Covax facility and the African Union. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

Discussions with other producers are also ongoing, particularly Moderna, Chinese manufacturers and the makers of the Russian Sputnik V jab.

South Africa's "vaccine strategy ensures that we are going to use a diverse portfolio of vaccines," said Karim.

"It so happens that we received the AstraZeneca vaccine first."

But the Democratic Alliance main opposition party accused the government of lacking foresight.

"We should have taken into account the possibility of the changing efficacy or delays in rollout strategy," it said in a statement.

Rethinking priorities

The suspension of South Africa's vaccine rollout followed results of an AstraZeneca trial with 2,000 participants and which has not yet undergone peer review. &nbsp;

Johannesburg's University of Witwatersrand (Wits), which conducted the study, found the vaccine only "provides minimal protection against mild-moderate Covid-19 infection" from the South African variant.

Scientists believe that variant is more transmissible than its original form, fuelling an unprecedented spike in cases earlier this year.

Wits vaccinologist Clare Cutland noted the study's sample, with a median age of 31 and no co-morbidities, was too limited to assess AstraZeneca's efficacy against severe disease.

But she said a larger trial of the Johnson &amp; Johnson vaccine, which uses similar technologies, showed relatively good protection against severe disease caused by the South African variant -- suggesting there was a "good chance" the same would be observed with AstraZeneca.

"The results... mean that we need to pause to reassess," Cutland told AFP.

"Do we want it to prevent mild and moderate disease only, or... reduce and prevent severe disease?"

"We may not have herd immunity to protect against mild disease," she added. "And maybe that's not a huge issue."

South Africa has recorded almost 1.5 million coronavirus cases and over 46,200 deaths.

The mortality rate has remained relatively low, however, with at least 92 per cent of cases recovered.

"The fact that this virus has mutated faster than we have changed the vaccine to catch up is unfortunate," said Cutland. &nbsp; &nbsp;

"The great thing is that the technologies are good... so the rollout of vaccines against different variants could be a lot quicker."

Researchers at AstraZeneca are working to update the vaccine and expect to have a version tailored to the South African variant by autumn.

Authorities delayed the start of a much-anticipated vaccination campaign -- expected to begin this week with the first batch of one million AstraZeneca/Oxford doses -- after a study showed the jabs failed to prevent mild and moderate infection from the South African variant. The temporary suspension, announced late on Sunday, put a damper on the imminent rollout and stoked criticism of the coronavirus response in Africa's hardest-hit nation. "We would (first) vaccinate about 100,000 people or so to monitor hospitalisation (rates)," Karim told AFP on Monday, adding that the process would take "a few weeks". "While we are rolling out the vaccine and collecting that information... we will be able to assess whether to continue." Karim explained it was "prudent" to push back the wider distribution of AstraZeneca shots until scientists ascertain whether they could still prevent severe disease, hospitalisation and death. Vaccine 'portfolio' The proposal will be fine-tuned with the government over the coming days. South Africa's Health Minister Zweli Mkhize told local media on Monday that an "implementation study" of AstraZeneca would take place alongside the rollout of Johnson & Johnson jabs. Tests will be done "on the people that are getting the (AstraZeneca) vaccination," Mkhize said on SAFM radio. South Africa has lagged behind the global vaccination race and only received its first vaccines on February 1. The one million AstraZeneca shots were produced by the Serum Institute of India, from which an additional 500,000 doses are expected this month. The country aims to inoculate at least 67 per cent of its population by the end of the year, or around 40 million people. Some 1.2 million health workers will be first in line. In addition to AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson, vaccines have been secured from US drugmaker Pfizer, the WHO-backed Covax facility and the African Union. Discussions with other producers are also ongoing, particularly Moderna, Chinese manufacturers and the makers of the Russian Sputnik V jab. South Africa's "vaccine strategy ensures that we are going to use a diverse portfolio of vaccines," said Karim. "It so happens that we received the AstraZeneca vaccine first." But the Democratic Alliance main opposition party accused the government of lacking foresight. "We should have taken into account the possibility of the changing efficacy or delays in rollout strategy," it said in a statement. Rethinking priorities The suspension of South Africa's vaccine rollout followed results of an AstraZeneca trial with 2,000 participants and which has not yet undergone peer review. Johannesburg's University of Witwatersrand (Wits), which conducted the study, found the vaccine only "provides minimal protection against mild-moderate Covid-19 infection" from the South African variant. Scientists believe that variant is more transmissible than its original form, fuelling an unprecedented spike in cases earlier this year. Wits vaccinologist Clare Cutland noted the study's sample, with a median age of 31 and no co-morbidities, was too limited to assess AstraZeneca's efficacy against severe disease. But she said a larger trial of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, which uses similar technologies, showed relatively good protection against severe disease caused by the South African variant -- suggesting there was a "good chance" the same would be observed with AstraZeneca. "The results... mean that we need to pause to reassess," Cutland told AFP. "Do we want it to prevent mild and moderate disease only, or... reduce and prevent severe disease?" "We may not have herd immunity to protect against mild disease," she added. "And maybe that's not a huge issue." South Africa has recorded almost 1.5 million coronavirus cases and over 46,200 deaths. The mortality rate has remained relatively low, however, with at least 92 per cent of cases recovered. "The fact that this virus has mutated faster than we have changed the vaccine to catch up is unfortunate," said Cutland. "The great thing is that the technologies are good... so the rollout of vaccines against different variants could be a lot quicker." Researchers at AstraZeneca are working to update the vaccine and expect to have a version tailored to the South African variant by autumn.
