<p>Nearly a fortnight after launching ‘Operation Kaveri’ to bring back stranded citizens from the conflict-ridden country of Sudan, the Indian government on Friday wrapped up the evacuation programme.</p>

<p>The Indian Air Force C130 flight brought the final batch of 47 passengers home which culminated the&nbsp;highly laborious and dangerous operation. In total, 3,862 people were moved out of Sudan, informed&nbsp;External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar on Twitter.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"An Indian Air Force C130 J flight carrying 47 passengers has landed in India. With this arrival, 3862 persons have been moved out of Sudan through #OperationKaveri," said Jaishankar.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The EAM also appreciated the countries that helped New Delhi evacuate its citizens safely.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"From Jeddah, airforce and commercial flights have brought people home. We are grateful to Saudi Arabia for hosting them and facilitating this process. Also appreciate the support of Chad, Egypt, France, South Sudan, UAE, UK, USA and UN," he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Indian Air Force chauffeured 17 flights from Sudan while five Indian Navy ships were also involved in the evacuation process.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Jaishankar&nbsp;lauded Union Minister of State for External Affairs V. Muraleedharan, who was present in Saudi Arabia to oversee the rescue efforts. Muraleedharan's presence on the ground was a source of strength and reassurance, he said.</p>

<p>The violent civil war between the Sudanese Army and the paramilitary forces that started last month has led to the death of more than 500 while over 4,000 have been injured.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The two warring factions were allies once as they seized power together in 2021. However, the proposed integration of RSF into the army did not sit well with the former. This led to a power struggle and has since metamorphosed into a full-blown civil war. Khartoum has witnessed the fiercest battles with the fighting spreading across the country as well.</p>

<p>According to the Indian Air Force, the C-17 aircraft departed from the Hindon Air Force Station, near New Delhi, on the intervening night of May 3rd and 4th.&nbsp;The heavy-lifter aircraft made a pit stop in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where keeping in mind the challenges of refuelling in its conflict-hit destination, Sudan, it tanked up on extra fuel.</p>

<p>This mission was undertaken to repatriate 192 passengers - mostly women, children and elderly individuals, who were either NRIs, foreign nationals or OCIs (Overseas Citizens of India). The military aircraft had to fly from Jeddah to Sudan and then directly back to India in a non-stop flight, as the passengers were not permitted to land in Jeddah.</p>

<p>Given the ongoing conflict in Sudan, the military aircraft performing repatriation flights are landing at their own risk and must undertake necessary measures for their safety. As part of the daring mission, the C-17 aircrew, as per the IAF, "carried out an overhead steep tactical arrival followed by an assault approach to land the heavy jet."&nbsp;</p>

<p>IAF Spokesperson Wing Commander Ashish Moghe explained to WION that the steep landings are performed in order to safeguard from the threats of small-arms fire from the ground.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While flying back from Sudan to India, the C-17 crew faced another unplanned emergency when one of the passengers fell unconscious. However, the crew immediately handled the situation and stabilised the patient by providing him with oxygen. IAF said that the C-17 carrying 192 passengers from Sudan landed at Ahmedabad late Thursday evening and then at the home base of Hindon, later that night. The C-17 Globemaster III flew close to 9600 km as part of this mission, with the aircrew flying extended duty periods of nearly 24 hours.</p>

<p>The Sudan crisis continues to escalate and considering the current security situation in the African country, India has temporarily relocated its embassy from the violence-hit capital city of Khartoum to Port Sudan.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Tuesday: "In view of the prevailing security situation in Sudan, including attacks in Khartoum city, it has been decided that the Indian Embassy in Khartoum will be temporarily relocated to Port Sudan."&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The situation will be assessed in the light of further developments," the MEA further added. Port Sudan is a port city on the Red Sea in eastern Sudan and is located at a distance of around 850 kilometres from Khartoum.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The embassy was shifted after news agency Reuters reported that India's embassy in Khartoum was stormed and looted, Sudan's army said in a statement, citing a report from the ambassador. But the incident hasn't been conformed by India yet.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The report further added that Saudi Arabia's foreign ministry said early on Wednesday that its building in Khartoum that houses its cultural mission was similarly vandalised and looted by an armed group.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) announced a seven-day ceasefire. But Reuters reported that there were more air strikes and shooting in the capital region, undercutting the latest supposed truce.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The UN migration agency said that some 330,000 Sudanese have also been displaced inside Sudan's borders by the war and about 800,000 people could eventually leave.&nbsp;</p>

Clashes in Sudan: India relocates embassy from Khartoum to Port Sudan amid crisis

<p>Braving&nbsp;all odds, including a bad airstrip and poor night vision, Indian Air Force personnel on the intervening night of 27 April and 28, rescued 121 people from Wadi Sayyidna in Sudan in an IAF C-130J heavy-lift aircraft.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The airstrip is about 40 km north of the violently tumultuous Sudanese capital of Khartoum.</p>

<p>The surface of the airstrip had deteriorated. There was no fuel or navigational help, and most importantly, there were no landing lights, which are necessary to guide an aircraft landing at night. But brave IAF personnel made use of NVGs, or night vision goggles, to successfully land at the airstrip and rescued the people.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A pregnant lady was among those who did not have transportation to Port Sudan, the main transit hub from which the Indian government is rescuing its residents using military aircraft and navy ships. All were safely rescued.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Approaching the airstrip, the aircrew used their Electro-Optical/Infra-Red sensors to ensure that the runway was free from any obstructions and no inimical forces were in the vicinity. Having made sure of the same, the aircrew carried out a tactical approach on Night Vision Goggles, on a practically dark night,” the IAF reportedly said.</p>

<p>“Upon landing, the aircraft engines were kept running while eight IAF Garud Commandos secured the passengers and their luggage into the aircraft. As with the landing, the take-off from the unlit runway was also carried out using NVGs. Subsequently, the evacuees were taken to Jeddah via Indian Air Force’s transport aircraft and Indian Navy’s ships.&nbsp;</p>

<p>New Delhi has set up separate control rooms in Jeddah, Port Sudan, while the Indian embassy in Khartoum has been in touch with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). <p>On Wednesday, Sudan army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan gave initial approval to a plan to extend the ceasefire for another 72 hours and sent an army envoy to Juba for talks, the news agency Reuters reported early Thursday. There was no immediate response from the RSF to the proposal.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Also on Wednesday- the second day of the initial agreed ceasefire- witnesses reported heavy air strikes in East Nile. Speaking to the news agency AFP, &nbsp;the witnesses said that warplanes flew over the northern suburbs of Khartoum, drawing heavy anti-aircraft fire from the paramilitaries.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In southern Khartoum, machinegun fire was reported near one of the homes owned by paramilitary commander Mohamed Hamdan, who is leading the RSF against the armed forces.&nbsp;</p>
