With every day the Iran conflict and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz continue, the global impacts and economic fall-out increase.
The fate of the world economy now depends on whether, and when a real ceasefire emerges, the stalemate holds, or the conflict widens.

Historic Energy Crisis From Hormuz Closure

United Arab Emirates is set to leave both OPEC and OPEC+ from May 1, marking a major shift in global energy politics. The move could reshape oil production strategies, influence crude prices, and alter alliances within the world’s biggest oil-producing bloc. Analysts say the decision reflects the UAE’s growing focus on independent energy policies and long-term economic diversification.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said that communication with Iran is ongoing, primarily through intermediaries, with some level of direct contact also taking place.

Rubio outlined Washington’s war objectives, including degrading Iran’s military capabilities, particularly its missile, naval and air power, while avoiding a ground invasion.

He also issued a strong warning on the Strait of Hormuz, saying the key global shipping route will reopen “one way or another,” either through Iranian compliance or coordinated international action.

The statement comes amid continued disruption in the strait and rising global concern over energy supplies, with the waterway remaining central to the ongoing conflict.

As the global energy crisis deepens, Asian economies have become the most vulnerable. This is due to their energy dependence on key Gulf routes. Here are the key policy highlights as Asia prepares for a new reality.

Asian Economies Scramble to Contain Energy Fallout

Crude markets showed extreme volatility as fragile optimism around a potential de-escalation in West Asia tensions faded on Tuesday. President Trump on Monday delayed the attacks on Iran's energy infrastructure by five days, and claimed Iran had initiated peace talks. But Iran ruled out any peace talks, and called Trump's comments as market manipulation.

The US Federal Reserve failed to offer any real guidance to the market, setting the script for other central banks to follow. The result is that oil prices now stay firmly in the driver’s seat, as the escalating Iran war clouds the outlook.

Central Banks Leave Oil in Driver's Seat

Moody's Analytics warns that the conflict in Iran has increased the risk of a U.S. recession to nearly 50% due to soaring oil prices and a weakening labor market. The surge in energy costs, driven by potential disruptions to oil shipments via the Strait of Hormuz, is expected to trigger a significant drop in consumer spending, making a downturn increasingly difficult to avoid.

US-Iran War: Wall Street Rises as Oil Prices Ease Concerns | World Business Watch

The global oil market is facing what energy analysts are calling the largest supply shock in modern history. Escalating attacks on energy facilities and disruptions to critical shipping routes have triggered fears of a massive supply crunch. If supply disruptions persist, analysts estimate 8 to 15 million barrels per day of oil supply could be affected, a shock far larger than many past crises. The big question now is how high oil prices could rise, and more importantly, which economies break first if crude keeps climbing.

Global Oil Crisis: Who Breaks First?

US Strikes on Iran's primary oil export hub have increased supply risks. The escalation has set the stage for another week of uncertainty in global oil markets. Late last week, President Donald Trump said that US Forces had attacked Iran's strategic Kharg Island, and warned to hit oil facilities if Iran continues to obstruct shipping in the narrow Strait of Hormuz. Since the war started, traffic through Hormuz has nearly come to a standstill. In response, Iran's supreme leader said that the strait will stay closed for enemy ships as long as the war persists.
