Venezuela's Nicolas Maduro sworn in for third term

Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro, sworn in Friday for a third six-year term after elections he is widely accused of stealing, has been written off many times during a turbulent decade in power.
But the former bus driver has stubbornly clung to the wheel.
With neither the charisma nor the flush oil revenues of his late revolutionary mentor Hugo Chavez, Maduro is accused of increasingly relying on the security forces to retain control.

More than 2,400 people were arrested, 28 killed and about 200 injured in a crackdown on the protests that followed his disputed victory claim in last July's elections.
The violence echoed previous deadly crackdowns on the opposition in 2014, 2017 and 2019.
His third term could see him remain in power until 2031, a total of 18 years -- four more than Chavez.
But he appears more isolated than ever on the international stage.
Only a handful of countries -- including perennial allies Russia and Cuba -- have recognized his claim to reelection, with the United States and several Latin American neighbors declaring opposition figure Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia the country's rightful leader.

Tall, with a full mustache and slicked-back graying hair, Maduro's image is plastered across buildings in Venezuela where he styles himself as an earthy man of the people.
He served as a lawmaker, foreign minister and vice president before being chosen by Chavez as his successor three months before the socialist firebrand died of cancer in 2013.

The choice of Maduro, who lacks Chavez's rhetorical skills, raised eyebrows in the ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV).
He barely scraped through on his first election in 2013.
But he has fended off crisis after crisis with the help of the military and paramilitaries, even as the economy imploded under the weight of falling oil prices, US sanctions and hyperinflation.
Seven million Venezuelans -- a quarter of the population -- have voted with their feet and sought a better life abroad since he took office.

Born in Caracas, Maduro is both a professed Marxist and Christian, and as a teenager played guitar in a rock band.
He is a baseball fan and dances salsa -- frequently showing off moves on state TV -- with his wife Cilia Flores, a former prosecutor he refers to as "First Combatant."
He has cast himself as a "worker president," and it has been claimed he deliberately misspeaks in English so as not to be seen as high-brow.

As president, Maduro has weathered many threats imagined and real -- including a failed explosive-laden drone attack in 2018 that wounded several soldiers.
He survived US sanctions imposed over his 2018 re-election, which was also tainted by fraud allegations.
About 50 countries including the United States recognized congress speaker Juan Guaido as interim president but his parallel government later collapsed.
Maduro has been aided by close political and economic ties with China and Russia, which have helped his country stay barely afloat.
To deflect blame for Venezuela's woes, he has sustained Chavez's anti-American conspiracy theories, accusing Washington of plotting to kill him and Western nations of ruining the once-thriving economy.
All the while, he has shuttered channels for political dissent, locking up dissidents and challengers with little regard for due process.
Venezuela is under investigation for rights violations by the International Criminal Court.
But he has also shown himself to be adept at realpolitik.

Venezuela: Opposition Leader González Urrutia Meets Leaders To Gather Support

Five Venezuelan opposition figures holed up in the Argentine embassy in Caracas said Saturday that they had been left without electricity for over a month, denouncing a "siege" by the government of authoritarian leader Nicolas Maduro.
The activists have been sheltering in the embassy since March, after prosecutors issued arrest warrants accusing them of attempts to destabilize the country. In late November, the opposition figures allege, the government cut power supply to the building.

"It is a violation of our human rights," Magalli Meda, a close advisor of opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, wrote on X.
"Thirty-five days without electricity," she added, had turned the building into an "embassy prison."
Water supplies have also been disrupted, according to the opposition.
Venezuelan interior minister Diosdado Cabello insists there is no "siege," and blamed the cutoff on a lack of payment for services.
A sixth Maduro opponent who had been also been sheltering in the embassy, Fernando Martinez Mottola, surrendered a week ago and is on conditional release.
The Machado-led opposition insists that its candidate, Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, won presidential elections on July 28 -- and not Maduro.
The country's electoral commission, accused of serving Maduro's interests, declared him the winner, but dozens of countries questioned that outcome.
Argentine diplomatic personnel left the embassy in August after President Javier Milei raised questions about the election, leading to a rupture in the relationship.
Meda said the Maduro government has hindered other nations' diplomats from coming to meet with them.
"No ambassador has come to this embassy, not one. Have they tried? Surely some would like to," she said.
Meda asserted that Venezuelan authorities have threatened to expel foreign diplomats if they get involved in the case.
Argentine-Venezuelan ties were further strained this month by the arrest in Venezuela of an Argentine policeman on charges of terrorism.
Venezuelan prosecutors said the officer, Nahuel Agustin Gallo, was part of a group planning "terrorist actions... with the support of international far-right groups."
But Gallo's family insist he had traveled merely as a tourist to visit his girlfriend and their son who were in Venezuela.
The Milei government angrily denounced the arrest as an "abduction" based on "a big lie."

Venezuela: Maduro declares early Christmas amid post-election crisis

In Nicolás Maduro’s Venezuela, Christmas will now be celebrated way in advance. The president announced Monday (Sep 2) that this year’s festivities would begin in October.

“It’s September and it already feels like Christmas,” the strongman declared. “So this year – as a way of paying tribute to you and thanking you – I’m going to decree that Christmas be brought forward to 1 October,” Maduro stated during one of his frequent TV appearances.

The precarious leader faced with a host of political challenges promised Venezuelans a Christmas of “peace, happiness and security”.

Presidential elections were held in Venezuela in July, officially won by strongman Maduro. However, western media reports point to strong evidence indicating he actually lost the elections to his opposition rival Edmundo González.

Maduro’s refusal to release detailed voting results further raised concerns over the legitimacy of the polls. Furthermore, authorities in Venezuela issued an arrest warrant against González.

As reported by Bloomberg, the US is understood to have prepared a list of sanctions to be imposed on 15 senior administration figures for their alleged obstruction of “the holding of free and fair presidential elections” in Venezuela.

US Govt seizes Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro's plane, citing sanctions violations

The United States has seized a plane used by Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and flown it from the Dominican Republic to Florida after determining that its purchase violated US sanctions, the US Justice Department said on Monday.

The seizure of the aircraft came amid continuing pressure on Maduro at home and abroad over a contested July 28 election that he claimed to have won, while the opposition said its vote tallies showed its candidate to have soundly defeated him.

Maduro, his associates and the OPEC member-state's vital oil sector are under heavy US sanctions, and his handling of the election has raised the prospects that further measures could be imposed.

US Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement that the Dassault Falcon 900EX aircraft was illegally purchased for $13 million through a shell company and smuggled out of the US "for use by Nicolás Maduro and his cronies."

"Let this seizure send a clear message: aircraft illegally acquired from the United States for the benefit of sanctioned Venezuelan officials cannot just fly off into the sunset," said Matthew Axelrod, the US Commerce Department's Assistant Secretary for Export Enforcement.

US officials said the seizure, which was first reported by CNN, was carried out working closely with the Dominican Republic.

The Venezuelan government did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

"This is an important step to ensure that Maduro continues to feel the consequences from his misgovernance of Venezuela," said a spokesperson for the White House National Security Council.

A wide range of independent sources has shown that Maduro and his representatives "have tampered with the results of the July 28 presidential election, falsely claimed victory and carried out widespread repression to maintain power by force," the spokesperson added.

A Justice Department investigation showed that in late 2022 and early 2023 "persons affiliated with Maduro allegedly used a Caribbean-based shell company to conceal their involvement in the illegal purchase of the Dassault Falcon 900EX aircraft."

The plane was then illegally exported from the United States to Venezuela through the Caribbean last year and since then has flown to and from a Venezuelan military base and been used "for the benefit of Maduro and his representatives, including to transport Maduro on visits to other countries," the Justice Department said.

The plane was then illegally exported from the United States to Venezuela through the Caribbean last year and since then has flown to and from a Venezuelan military base and been used "for the benefit of Maduro and his representatives, including to transport Maduro on visits to other countries," the Justice Department said.

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro urged his supporters to remove WhatsApp from their devices and accused the Meta-owned messaging app is being exploited by "fascists" to instigate violence. Maduro's comment came as a fervent appeal under the rain at a rally organised by the ruling party’s youth branch.

Maduro called for a "voluntary, progressive, and radical withdrawal" from WhatsApp. The Venezuelan president called for a gradual switch to alternative platforms such as Telegram and the Chinese messaging app WeChat.

Thousands of furious Venezuelans took to the streets in and beyond the capital Caracas on Monday (July 29), with fresh protests expected on July 30 against what they describe as 'a stolen election'. Ordinary citizens of the South American nation as well as opposition politicians tore down posters of President Nicolas Maduro across Caracas.

The country's electoral council loyal to President Maduro announced that he won a third term in voting after Sunday (July 30).

The opposition, which polls had predicted would win by a landslide, claimed it took more than two-thirds of the votes in the oil-rich country.

The National Electoral Council (CNE) gave Maduro 51 per cent of the votes, against 44 per cent for Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, the proxy for wildly popular opposition leader Maria Corina Machado.

Courts loyal to Maduro barred Machado from running for president earlier this year, citing what she and many Venezuelans call bogus corruption charges.

Venezuelans protest President Maduro's re-election after 'exceptional manipulation' in polls

Polls open in Venezuela on Sunday as Western officials called for a fair election between President Nicolas Maduro and rival Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia. Around 21 million people are registered to vote.

Venezuela Presidential Elections 2024: Nicolas Maduro vs Edmundo Gonzalez; Maduro seeks 3rd term

When Nicolas Maduro Moras took over charge at Venezuela after the untimely death of revolutionary socialist leader Hugo Chavez in 2013, not many expected him to have such a long stint at the helm. On Sunday (July 28), Maduro, the 61-year-old former bus driver declared himself the victor the contentious presidential election of the South American nation. This will be his third consecutive term, which lasts for another six years.

The election results were immediately rejected by opposition leader Maria Corina Machado. Maria herself was banned by Madoro's regime from contesting, and instead the opposition fielded Edmundo Gonzalez. The opposition is claiming that Gonzalez won 70 per cent of the vote. But for now, Maduro appears to be firmly in the driver's seat yet again, all set for a third term as president.

Who is Nicolas Maduro?

Maduro was born into a working class Roman Catholic family in Caracas. His father was a prominent trade unionist.

A bus driver by profession, Maduro was part of Hugo Chavez's United Socialist Party. Having risen through its trade union, he was elected to the country's parliament, the National Assembly, for the first time in 2000.

Soon Maduro became the right hand man of Chavez, who was a fan of Che Guevera, and had led 'silent coups' to become president. The positions Maduro held over time include the president of National Assembly (2005-06) and foreign minister (2006-13) before becoming the vice president under Chavez (2012-13).

Eventually after Chavez died of cancer, Maduro took charge as president in 2013, winning the special presidential election.

Not a smooth ride for the former bus driver

But power was not a smooth ride for the leader of the oil-rich country. Venezuela has been for years the site of political experimentations by the US, which saw it as part of the sphere of influence and was averse to a communist leadership in the country. Like it did in the case of Cuba and Chile, and numerous other Latin American countries during much of the Cold War era, the US tried to oust Maduro in a number of ways, including by supporting and propping up alternative leaders.

Prominent among such leaders was the former speaker of the Venezuelan parliament Geaido. He was feted in the US and at one point gave a tough challenge to Maduro, but the socialist party machinery managed to weather that storm too.

Venezuela under Maduro: A nation under siege

What could have been one of the richest nations due to its oil wealth, Venezuela continued to languish in poverty under Maduro. But his ground support among the working classes remained strong, something that helped him maintain a firm grip on power. Venezuela faced immense inflation, with its currency highly devalued, and natural resources like petroleum nationalised by the Maduro regime. Essential goods shortages had led many Venezuelans to flee the country, particularly to neighbouring Colombia.

Under Maduro's regime, at least seven million people have fled the country and more than 20,000 people died in extrajudicial killings according to human rights observers.

Facing down the Opposition, the Maduro way

Maduro has ruled with an iron fist, inspite of multiple protests challenging him. Those include the mainly middle class agitations in 2014. In 2015, the National Assembly was won by opposition parties, yet Maduro held on to power, with the so-called Supreme Tribunal, the National Electoral Council and the armed forces on his side.

He quelled a recall effort in 2016, led by the speaker of the opposition-led National Assembly Juan Guaidó. He had done this by making the Supreme Tribunal remove the powers of the assembly, which had led to further protests in 2017. To solve the constitutional crisis created by this situation, Maduro made efforts to rewrite the constitution.

At one point, there was even a strange situation of 'two presidents' in Venezuela. While Maduro was sworn in as president after the May 2018 presidential elections, the opposition-led National Assembly declared its leader Guaido as interim president. The tussle continued for four years, with Guaido explicitly backed by the US, which even invited him to the Congress.

Who is Nicolas Maduro, Venezuela's bus driver-turned-president, who won yet another term?

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on Monday (July 29) has won the election with 51 per cent of the vote and a third term in office, announced the country's government-controlled electoral authority even though multiple exit polls had indicated a victory for the opposition.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on Monday (July 29) has won the election with 51 per cent of the vote and a third term in office, announced the country's government-controlled electoral authority even though multiple exit polls had indicated a victory for the opposition. The electoral authority said that opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez won 44 per cent of the vote. Maduro, 61, will now be president for another six years. In office since 2013, he is accused of locking up critics and harassing the opposition in a climate of rising authoritarianism. Sunday's election was the product of a mediated deal reached last year between the government and the opposition. What did independent polls predict? According to a report by the news agency AFP, independent polls predicted Sunday's vote would bring an end to 25 years of "Chavismo," the populist movement founded by Maduro's socialist predecessor and mentor, the late Hugo Chavez. Oppn rejects Maduro win claim As Maduro's supporters celebrated, opposition voters waited to hear from Gonzalez and Maria Corina Machado. Gonzalez had replaced Machado on the ticket after authorities loyal to Maduro excluded her from the race. Later on Monday, the opposition coalition rejected the win claimed by Maduro and announced by the electoral authority, saying it had garnered 70 per cent of the vote, not 44 per cent as reported by the authority. Addressing a press conference, Machado said, "We want to say to all of Venezuela and the world that Venezuela has a new president-elect and it is Edmundo Gonzalez." International reaction to poll result US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Monday that Washington had serious concerns that the election results declaring Maduro the winner were not accurate. "We have serious concerns that the result announced does not reflect the will or the votes of the Venezuelan people," Blinken said in Japan. He added that every vote should be counted fairly and transparently, "that election officials immediately share information with the opposition and independent observers without delay, and that the electoral authorities publish the detailed tabulation of votes." Chile's President Gabriel Boric, meanwhile, said that the election result was hard to believe. Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares urged total transparency in the vote count, while Colombia called for an independent audit of the votes. "The government of Costa Rica rejects categorically the proclamation of Nicolas Maduro as president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, which we consider fraudulent," Costa Rican President Rodrigo Chaves said in a post on X. Venezuela election: President Nicolas Maduro wins third term, opposition rejects result

Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro has been selected to seek a third, successive term in July 28 elections, a senior ruling party official said Monday.

A vote by the PSUV party concluded that Maduro would be its presidential candidate, Diosdado Cabello, considered the number 2 in the ruling "Chavismo" movement, wrote on X.

Maduro, 61, has not made any announcement himself, but has been widely expected to seek reelection in a vote from which his main challenger has been precluded from running.

The president's re-election to a six-year term in 2018 -- widely considered fraudulent -- was not recognized by the United States and dozens of other countries, and was met with a string of sanctions.

Last week, Venezuela's electoral authority CNE announced elections will be held on July 28 in the South American country which is in dire economic straits.

That came after Maduro's government and the opposition agreed in Barbados last year to hold a free and fair vote in 2024 with international observers present.

The deal saw the United States ease sanctions against the oil-rich South American country, allowing US-based Chevron to resume limited crude extraction and leading to a prisoner swap.

The agreement required that opposition candidates be allowed to appeal court rulings disqualifying them from holding office.

Since then, however, the Supreme Court loyal to Maduro upheld a 15-year ban on opposition primary winner Maria Corina Machado and others, prompting Washington to consider reimposing sanctions.
