Organisers of "illegal" votes in four seized regions of Ukraine, which Russia is holding as "referendums" with the intention of annexing, may face sanctions, the European Union announced on Tuesday.

As the fifth and final day of voting began, Josep Borrell's spokesperson, Peter Stano, warned journalists that "there would be consequences for all people who participate in the illegal, illegitimate referendums."

According to Luc Devigne, a senior member of Borrell's foreign policy team, "we will put in individuals that are obviously linked to the recent steps with these referendums" in the sanctions package.

The 27 EU members are debating new penalties on Russia for staging the referendum, which was generally viewed as a "sham" in the West.

Both Stano and Devigne emphasised that the EU would not recognise the outcomes of Russia's "referendums," which are anticipated to result in President Vladimir Putin announcing the annexation of the four regions of Ukraine as early as this Friday.

The voting is conducted in the same manner as the voting that Russia conducted in 2014 in the Crimea region of Ukraine that was occupied; as a result, Moscow annexed Crimea, a move that was not recognised internationally save by a small number of Russian supporters.

Several invited EU residents have participated in the vote in the Ukrainian regions as Russian-backed poll "observers," including a German energy firm CEO and a far-right French politician, according to reports.

If proven to have violated EU sanctions, Stano claimed they ran the danger of being penalised.

World Trade Organization (WTO) Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has given a rather gloomy outlook on the global economy. In her opening statement at WTO's annual public forum in Geneva, Okonjo-Iweala stated that the world may be 'edging' into recession.

Her views echoed the similar warning some days ago by World Bank. The global lender on Tuesday also slashed growth prospects for Asia, citing concerns about slowdown in China.

"Now we have to weather what looks like an oncoming recession. I think a global recession. That's what I think we are edging into. But at the same time, we have to start thinking of the recovery. We have to restore growth," said the WTO chief.

With most central banks across the globe taking a hawkish approach and hiking the interest rates to beat inflation, the former Nigerian finance and foreign minister said the banks were in a tough spot.

"Central banks don't really have too much of a choice but to tighten and increase interest rates but the repercussions on emerging markets and developing countries is quite severe, because they too are tightening an increase in interest rates," she said.

Her statement comes less than two weeks after World Bank also provided a similar assessment. As reported by WION, World Bank President David Malpass gave a bearish outlook. "Global growth is slowing sharply, with further slowing likely as more countries fall into recession," said Malpass, adding that these trends would persist, with devastating consequences for emerging market and developing economies.

Indian firms would likely increase employee compensation by 10.4 per cent in 2023, which would be virtually in line with the 10.6 per cent increase seen so far in 2022, as reported by Reuters.

The likelihood of a double-digit pay hike comes as the south Asian nation struggles with skyrocketing inflation amid concerns of a recession in the global economy. In August, India's inflation increased to 7 per cent, continuing an eight-month streak in which it exceeded the central bank's tolerance target.

In a statement based on a poll, Roopank Chaudhary, partner, of human capital solutions at Aon in India, said that the compensation boost reflects "the confidence that corporate India has in its strong business performance."

Data from 1,300 businesses in more than 40 categories were analysed for the survey.

The impact of increased costs and salary pressures must be balanced, Chaudhary added, with the relatively high rate of turnover and the continuous need for vital talent.

The study revealed that staff departures were still high in the first half of this year (20.3 per cent), but slightly lower than the 21 per cent in 2021.

With a forecasted pay growth of 12.8 per cent, e-commerce tops all other sectors, followed by start-ups, hi-tech/information technology and IT-enabled services, 11.3 per cent, and financial institutions, 10.7 per cent.

In a major crackdown on unlicensed online gaming businesses, the Philippines government on Tuesday announced that it will shut more than 175 gambling dens and deport about 40,000 Chinese workers.

In a major crackdown on unlicensed online gaming businesses, the Philippines government on Tuesday announced that it will shut more than 175 gambling dens and deport about 40,000 Chinese workers. “The crackdown was triggered by reports of murder, kidnapping and other crimes committed by Chinese nationals against fellow Chinese nationals,” said justice ministry spokesperson Jose Dominic Clavano. The ministry said the measure was aimed at sending a strong message after the crime rate skyrocketed across the country. "This is really our job to society and to make sure that these crimes are not committed. We thought it best to send a signal that this type of behaviour is not tolerable, it's not acceptable to the country." Read more: US may use our military bases in case of a Taiwan conflict, says Philippine ambassador to the US The Philippine offshore gaming operators or POGOs had mushroomed in the country after 2016 when President Rodrigo Duterte started to pursue a closer relationship with China. The gambling industry peaked around 2020 when it raked in approximately $122 million and employed nearly 300,000 Chinese workers. However, the meteoric rise of POGO's also led to an increase in crimes as individuals, mostly Chinese engaged in kidnapping, prostitution and murder, according to the ministry. The regulators informed that only 30 POGO's had licenses to run operations in the country while the rest were either running on expired or revoked licenses. The Chinese embassy in a statement batted for the move and added POGO's were hurting the relationship between the two countries, "Crimes induced by and associated with online gambling not only harm China's interests and China-Philippines relations, but also hurt the interests of the Philippines." Gambling is strictly banned in mainland China and since last year, the Xi Jinping regime has enforced gaming laws as well, restricting the gaming time of kids and teenagers.
