Ex-WFI chief Brij Bhushan claims his name helped Vinesh Phogat win in Haryana assembly polls

The war of words has already started between the top echelons of Congress after the party failed to gain majority in the Haryana Assembly elections. Senior leader Kumari Selja launched a scathing yet veiled attack on former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, under whose leadership the party contested the state elections.

Selja said the party high command needed to identify those accountable for the poor performance in the polls and devise a new strategy.

"Pained by Congress workers' disappointment, I am confident the party high command will assess the reasons for the defeat. The high command should formulate a plan to help revive the party in Haryana and identify those responsible for the results," Selja said.

Further targeting Hooda, Selja pointed out that ticket distribution had been a point of contention which led to dissatisfaction amongst the ground party workers.

In the lead-up to the election, there had been visible friction between the two leaders. While Hooda projected himself as the frontrunner for the CM post, Selja also expressed interest in the post, leading to the clashing of swords.

"Yes. I am among contenders to be Chief Minister... but the final decision is with the party high command," Selja had commenced prior to Tuesday's result.

The infighting, however, led to collateral damage for Congress which could not remove the BJP despite a strong anti-incumbency sentiment against the saffron party, as claimed by several exit polls that failed to predict the outcome.

Geoffrey Hinton, regarded by many as the 'godfather of artificial intelligence' (AI), was awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in physics alongside John Hopfield on Tuesday (Oct 8) by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. Immediately after winning the award, Hopfield talked about the significance of the technology but also warned of it "getting out of control".

Hinton laid the foundations for machine learning that is powering many of today's AI-based products and applications. However, he grew wary of AI's future development and cut ties with his former employer Google in order to speak more freely on the issue.

“It will be comparable with the industrial revolution. But instead of exceeding people in physical strength, it’s going to exceed people in intellectual ability. We have no experience of what it’s like to have things smarter than us,” Hinton was quoted as saying by CNN.

“But we also have to worry about a number of possible bad consequences, particularly the threat of these things getting out of control,” he cautioned.

Hinton added, “I am worried that the overall consequence of this might be systems more intelligent than us that eventually take control."

This is not the first instance when Hinton was warned of AI's future and its impact on humanity. Speaking at the Collision tech conference in Toronto last year, the so-called "godfather of AI" emphasised the importance of understanding how artificial intelligence might attempt to take control before it surpasses human intelligence.

"Before AI is smarter than us, I think the people developing it should be encouraged to put a lot of work into understanding how it might try and take control away."

"Right now there are 99 very smart people trying to make AI better and one very smart person trying to figure out how to stop it taking over and maybe you want to be more balanced," he added.

As per Hinton, it's not just the threat of a takeover, AI also threatens to deepen pre-existing inequalities. He argued that AI's benefits and productivity gains are likely to benefit the wealthy.

We senior doctors of R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital are giving mass resignation (sic)," it added. According to the RG Kar doctors, their colleagues from other hospitals were also mulling mass resignations. “This will hopefully create more pressure. The system is run by seniors… if they resign, it will collapse,” one of the junior doctors was quoted as saying by news agency PTI. According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), Milton was upgraded into a Category 5 storm in just over an hour on Monday (Oct 7) as the largest evacuation drive in nearly a decade was pushed by the state, according to a NY Post report.

Kevin Guthrie, director of Florida’s emergency management division, said residents needed to be prepared for the “largest evacuation that we have seen most likely since 2017 Hurricane Irma,” when seven million Floridians were ordered to evacuate.

Authorities urged more than 15 million Floridians to leave their homes in the evacuation zone and write their names and personal information on their arms in permanent marker so that their bodies can be identified in the worst-case scenario.

Milton had maximum sustained winds of 150 mph (240 kph) over the southern Gulf of Mexico. It could make landfall Wednesday in the Tampa Bay area, and could remain a hurricane as it moves across central Florida toward the Atlantic Ocean.

“It’s not uncommon to get a hurricane threat in October along the west coast of Florida, but forming all the way in the southwest Gulf and then striking Florida is a little bit more unusual,” said Daniel Brown, a hurricane specialist at NHC.

What was supposed to be a memorable and cherished Air Show experience for lakhs of people at Chennai's iconic Marina Beach turned out to be a disaster due to the lax approach and blatant negligence of authorities under the Tamil Nadu government and the Indian Railways.
India's External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar was at his diplomatic best when asked a tricky question during a rapid-fire round. In the interview, Jaishankar was asked to pick who would he like to have dinner with, North Korean premier Kim Jong Un or Hungarian-American businessman George Soros.

While the question was light-hearted in nature, it was still politically charged, but still Jaishankar came out on top with a humorous yet clever response: "I think this is Navratri, I am fasting."

Notably, Navratri is an annual Hindu festival celebrated in honour of Goddess Durga - spread across nine days. The devotees fast during this period and observe a strict vegetarian diet while abstaining from alcohol and certain spices.

Jaishankar's reply instantly went viral on social media, with the netizens appreciating the EAM's quick thinking.

One user said, "Our EAM's presence of mind is at the next level," while another added: "Ohh I love this man, I mean the wittiness is so on point."

A third commented: "I think he is the greatest and most capable foreign minister till date. 40 years diplomacy."

"I expect that there would be a lot of media interest because the very nature of the relationship is such and I think we will deal with it. While the question was light-hearted in nature, it was still politically charged, but still Jaishankar came out on top with a humorous yet clever response: "I think this is Navratri, I am fasting." Notably, Navratri is an annual Hindu festival celebrated in honour of Goddess Durga - spread across nine days. The devotees fast during this period and observe a strict vegetarian diet while abstaining from alcohol and certain spices. Jaishankar's reply instantly went viral on social media, with the netizens appreciating the EAM's quick thinking. One user said, "Our EAM's presence of mind is at the next level," while another added: "Ohh I love this man, I mean the wittiness is so on point." A third commented: "I think he is the greatest and most capable foreign minister till date. 40 years diplomacy." -Anchor: Choose one person you wish to have dinner with – Kim Jong Un or George Soros?" -Dr. Jaishankar: I think this is Navratri, and I'm fasting 😭🤣 pic.twitter.com/ozGkuS4Itr — Mr Sinha (@MrSinha_) October 5, 2024 × Watch | Indian EAM S Jaishankar says 'era of uninterrupted dialogue with Pakistan is over × Jaishankar on Pakistan trip This is not the first instance when Jaishankar has come up with such a comeback. On Saturday (Oct 5), Jaishankar made it clear that he had no plans to engage in talks with Pakistan during his upcoming visit to the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting. "Yes, I am scheduled to go to Pakistan in the middle of this month and that is for the meeting of the SCO — the heads of government meeting," said Jaishankar. "I expect that there would be a lot of media interest because the very nature of the relationship is such and I think we will deal with it. But, I do want to say it will be there for a multilateral event, I mean I am not going there to discuss India-Pakistan relations. I am going there to be a good member of the SCO. Since I am a courteous and civil person, I will behave myself accordingly." Jaishankar has previously made it clear as well that the era of 'uninterrupted dialogue' with Pakistan was long over. Morning news brief: Trump back in Pennsylvania after failed assassination; Israel on alert, and more

While doctors have been protesting for their safety for over a month in the eastern Indian city of Kolkata, the capital city New Delhi witnessed a gruesome murder where a 55-year-old doctor was shot dead by two teenagers in the early hours of Thursday (Oct 3).

According to the hospital staff, the two accused, aged between 16 and 17, arrived at the Nima Hospital, in Delhi's Jaitpur area, at around 1.30 am local time, seeking treatment.

Morning news brief: Trump's 'desperate criminal scheme' for power; Singapore ex-minister jailed, and more

Bangladesh's interim government under Muhammad Yunus has recalled envoys to key countries and global bodies, including India, as part of a major reshuffle. Mustafizur Rahman, the high commissioner to India has been ordered to return to Dhaka quickly.

"You have been transferred to headquarters, Ministry of External Affairs, Dhaka. Therefore, you are requested to relinquish your present charge at Bangladesh High Commission, New Delhi and return to HQ, Dhaka without delay," read the official confirmation letter.

Notably, the recall of the Bangladesh envoy to India comes at a time when relations between New Delhi and Dhaka have plummeted, following the collapse of the Sheikh Hasina government.

Apart from Rahman, Mahbub Hassan Saleh, the ambassador to Belgium; Muhammad Abdul Muhith, the permanent representative to the United Nations; M Allama Siddiqui, the high commissioner to Australia and Rezina Ahmed, the ambassador to Portugal have also been recalled by Dhaka.

This is not the first instance when the Bangladeshi government has terminated the contract of its diplomats in India.

In August, Shaban Mahmud, First Secretary (Press) at the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi and Ranjan Sen, a First Secretary (Press) at the Bangladeshi consulate in Kolkata, were also relieved of their duties before the end of their respective tenures.

Why the breakdown in relations?

Former PM Hasina has sought refuge in the northern Indian city of Ghaziabad ever since fleeing Bangladesh as the demonstrators took over her official residence in the wake of the students' protest in August.

The interim government has demanded that New Delhi extradite Hasina so that she can be tried in the courts for her involvement in the deaths of the protesters.

Also read | Bangladesh: Muhammad Yunus-led govt asks Hindus to pause Durga Puja music during namaz, azan

Last month, the newly appointed chief prosecutor of the country's International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), Mohammad Taijul, stated that Bangladesh will take 'necessary steps' to secure the extradition of Hasina.

“Necessary steps will be taken to bring former prime minister Hasina back under the extradition treaty with India to try her on charges of mass killings during the student-led protests in July and August,” Taijul said.

The relations have also deteriorated due to the condition of Bangladeshi Hindus in the country where they have been subjected to brutal treatment from the majority Muslim populace.

The relations have also deteriorated due to the condition of Bangladeshi Hindus in the country where they have been subjected to brutal treatment from the majority Muslim populace. The march was organised by the Leh Apex Body (LAB) in coordination with the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), both of which have been leading an agitation for the past four years.
Protests against the lease deal

Last month, thousands of passengers at JKIA were left stranded after Kenya Aviation Authority (KAA) workers went on a strike.

Kenya Aviation Workers Union said the strike was meant to pressurise the central government to scrap the plan to lease the airport to Adani Group for 30 years in exchange for a $1.85 billion investment.

However, the strike was called off a day later after Francis Atwoli, secretary general of the Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU), said the government had come up with an agreement and the plan would only move forward with the union’s approval.

Why the protests?

The union as well as critics of the move argue that Adani Group's takeover would lead to job losses for local staff and rob taxpayers of future airport profits.

The strikes were first planned in August but delayed multiple times to allow for negotiations. The Kenyan government has reasoned that the airport is operating above capacity and needs modernising but that it is not for sale. According to reports, Adani would add a second runway and upgrade the passenger terminal.

However, the strike was called off a day later after Francis Atwoli, secretary general of the Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU), said the government had come up with an agreement and the plan would only move forward with the union’s approval. (With inputs from agencies)
