Kolkata doctor rape-murder: 50 senior doctors at RG Kar resign in support of protesting colleagues

As many as 50 senior faculty members of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in the Indian city of Kolkatahave tendered resignations, on Tuesday (Oct 8) in support of the protesting junior doctors.
Six protesting doctorshave gone on an indefinite hunger strike as theWest Bengal government refuses to accept their demands in the aftermath of the brutal rape and murder of a junior trainee doctor at the hospital in August.
“We, the undersigned doctors of R G Kar Medical College and Hospital, have been striving to provide optimal hospital services. However, the current conditions have made it increasingly challenging to deliver the quality of patient care that is essential,” the letter stated.
The doctors have demanded better working conditions in the aftermath of the incident, adding that the health of their colleagues was "deteriorating tremendously fast".
“We request the government to come into reconciliation with the protesting doctors and the ones who are sitting on indefinite hunger strike immediately. We senior doctors of R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital are giving mass resignation (sic)," it added.
According to the RG Kar doctors, their colleagues from other hospitals were also mulling mass resignations.

“This will hopefully create more pressure. The system is run by seniors… if they resign, it will collapse,” one of the junior doctors was quoted as saying by news agencyPTI.

Chargesheet filed against main accused
On Monday (Oct 7), theCentral Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed achargesheet against prime accused, Sanjay Roy, before a special court in Kolkata. The chargesheet stated that Roy was working as a civic volunteer with the local police when he committed the crime on August 9.
The victim had gone to the seminar room to sleep during a break when Roy pounced on her. The agency did not mention gang rapein the report, indicating that Roy acted alone to commit the crime.
The victim's body was found the next morning by a junior doctor.The post-mortem reportrevealed that the victim had suffered25 internal and external injuries.
The chargesheet states that Roy attempted to mislead the investigators when CBI came into the picture. During the lie detector test, Roy claimed innocence, stating that the victim was already unconscious when he entered the hall.
Quizzed why he did not inform anyone about the incident, Roy said he was in a state of panic after seeing the woman injured.
