New Zealand abandoned their one-day&nbsp;cricket&nbsp;tour of Australia on Saturday after Wellington tightened border restrictions to combat the spread of coronavirus.

The Blacks Caps lost the opening game of the three-match series by 71 runs and were due to play the second in Sydney on Sunday.

But they will fly home immediately after New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced everyone entering the country from midnight Sunday would have to self-isolate for 14 days.

"In response to the New Zealand government's latest travel restrictions,&nbsp;Cricket&nbsp;Australia has been advised the New Zealand team will be returning home immediately,"&nbsp;Cricket&nbsp;Australia said.

The two remaining matches, along with three upcoming Twenty20 clashes between the two countries in New Zealand, were postponed.

"Cricket&nbsp;Australia and New Zealand&nbsp;Cricket&nbsp;will work together to identify a future opportunity to play both series," it added.

Ardern said the self-quarantine order would be reviewed after 16 days.

New Zealand so far only has six confirmed cases of the virus and has recorded no fatalities.

The series in Australia was already being played without fans to curb the spread of coronavirus, which has forced a swathe of sporting events behind closed doors.

After the opening match on Friday, New Zealand fast bowler Lockie Ferguson was tested for the virus and placed in isolation after complaining of a sore throat.

The scare followed Australian paceman Kane Richardson being isolated and tested for COVID-19 after suffering a sore throat on Thursday. He missed the opening ODI, but was cleared of the virus late Friday.

Health authorities said the man in his 30s, who is the partner of a woman who was confirmed to have COVID-19 this week, attended the Tool concert at Spark Arena in Auckland on February 28.

The rock concert in New Zealand's largest city was packed to capacity for two days last week.

Bloomfield said the risk is low for all others who attended this concert. The man has been isolated at home since Wednesday.

Wildlife experts taught six kea, a species of large parrot native to New Zealand renowned for their intelligence, to play a variation of a game designed to test their statistical understanding.

The birds -- Blofeld, Bruce, Loki, Neo, Plankton and Taz -- were trained to associate black tokens with a food reward and orange pegs with none.&nbsp;

During early tests, they used their beaks to pick up the black tokens and were given a treat.&nbsp;

The researchers then displayed the pegs in clear jars, with differing ratios of black and orange, picked up one token from each and concealed them in their palms, before offering them to the birds.

The kea preferred tokens from the jars that had a relatively higher proportion of black to orange tokens, showing that they were playing the percentages.&nbsp;

In addition, the kea showed a clear preference towards researchers who had previously demonstrated a "bias" towards picking more black tokens than orange.&nbsp;

"We always knew that they seemed quite intelligent, so we weren’t too surprised to find that they could understand probabilities," said Amalia Bastos, research assistant at the University of Auckland's School of Psychology.

"What was most surprising is that they can integrate social or physical information into their probabilistic judgements," she told AFP.

Bastos and her research team aren't currently sure what evolutionary advantage is bestowed by the ability to recognise probability.&nbsp;

But the trait was long thought to be the reserve of intelligent primates and humans, and shows the kea and possibly its relatives may not be so bird-brained, after all.

"Kea have the boldest personalities of all the bird species I have ever met," said Bastos.&nbsp;

"Each individual has their own quirky preferences and idiosyncrasies that we learn about when we work with them. They are curious and not at all shy, making them very easy to work with.&nbsp;

"They have definitely outsmarted me on more than one occasion," she added.

Researchers found brain scans of adults who had a long history of offending showed a smaller surface area in many regions of the brain compared with those with a clean track record.

The study claims that genetic and environmental factors such as childhood deprivation may have shaped their brains early in life and it is also possible that other factors such as smoking, alcohol or <a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/celebrity-news-justin-bieber-opens-up-about-drug-abuse-it-was-legit-crazy-scary-278642">drug abuse</a> could have caused the brain changes.

'Cora': Autonomous flying taxi to begin trials in New Zealand

"We have issued notices to evacuate and to prepare to evacuate to 6,000 people across the region," an Emergency Management Southland (EMS) spokeswoman told AFP.

Power to affected areas was cut off as a precaution and evacuation centres were set up in local churches and schools.

Floodwaters washed away sections of the only road to Milford Sound, a popular hiking spot for international tourists, and EMS said almost 200 people were being airlifted to nearby Te Anau.

"The tourists... have been well catered for," it said.

"Morale has been high amongst the visitors and staff, as they received regular briefings and have been in contact with friends and family."

Only two minor injuries have been reported after a landslide hit a hut on the Routeburn walking track, with both people receiving treatment at the scene.
