It has been named after an Antarctic research and supply vessel called the Laurence M&nbsp;Gould. The vessel and its crew have made several scientific contributions and it recently went out of service.&nbsp;

The dragonfish has certain distinctive physical features, such as two dark vertical bands of colour on its body. It has a slender body, a wide snout, an elongated mouth and large oval-shaped eyes.

According to the study, the fish was discovered accidentally while researchers were sweeping the region for zooplankton. They found the larvae of the fish and took them to study them.

Initially, it was thought to be a different species of dragonfish, Akarotaxis nudiceps. However, as the fish grew, lead researcher Andrew Corso and his colleagues noticed something exciting.

“There are two distinct bands on the sides of adult Akarotaxis gouldae that are not present on Akarotaxis nudiceps, so we were surprised that the species already existed in collections but had been previously overlooked,” Corso said.

Using a process called phylogeny and genetic testing, Corso and his co-author Thomas Desvigne found that the Banded Dragonfish had deviated from a separate species approximately 780,000 years ago.

“We hypothesise that a population of dragonfish may have become isolated within deep trenches under glaciers, surviving on food pushed in by the moving ice. Once the glaciers retreated, this subpopulation had become distinct enough to be reproductively incompatible with Akarotaxis nudiceps,” Corso said.&nbsp;

Desvigne is a researcher from the Institute of Neuroscience at the University of&nbsp;Oregon.

The researchers say that since Antarctic dragonfish live in deep waters, they haven't been studied much. Akarotaxis gouldae also seem to be limited to the water around the western Antarctic Peninsula, as per the study.

“Rocks from this interval of time have a notoriously poor fossil record and the discovery and description of a fossil mammal skull is an important step forward in documenting the earliest diversification of mammals after Earth’s last mass extinction,” said Dr Tyler Lyson, Museum Curator of Vertebrate Paleontology.&nbsp;

After unearthing the specimen, the team used sophisticated scanning techniques, 3D reconstructions, and teeth comparisons to find out where Militocodon lydae would be placed on the evolutionary tree.&nbsp;

One of the key findings which suggests that the small mammal led to cows, pigs, and deer we have today is that its teeth were used to shear and crush rather than grind.&nbsp;

Since 2014, Goldenberger and his team have collected and analysed patient samples, studying 61 unknown bacterial pathogens from people with several medical conditions. Sequencing these bacterial genomes using traditional methods was difficult for them. So, they turned to a relatively new method for their analysis. Using an algorithm, they compared the sequences with known strains and identified 35 new species. Among these, seven were clinically relevant, meaning they can cause infections. The researchers classed the other 26 bacteria as "difficult to identify." Furthermore, according to the study, one of the "difficult to identify" bacteria found in a dog bite wound on a patient's thumb might be a novel and emerging pathogen. In the end, they both concluded that it was some new species, most likely to belong to the same genus as spotted in 1997.

They live several hundred feets below the surface of the Indian Ocean off the coast of Tanzania. Sea slugs are notorious as the masters of disguise. A newly discovered species - madrella amphora - resembles snail eggs.

These creatures are known to mimic the colors of other species.

The academy also found Trembleya alto-parai-sensis - a plant with white flowers is difficult to track because it looks after its needs by migrating.

Interestingly, new species of this plant were discovered this year. It was found living in national parks of Brazil and Madagascar.&nbsp;

At least five new spiders were spotted this year, according to the report with one of them from the family of "ant-worshipping spiders" which lives in ant mounds mostly in the Chihuahuan desert in Mexico.

The other is a new harvestman which lives in the caves of Croatia and is adapted to live in the dark. Researchers say the only way to see what it's doing is to dig it up.

Indian scientists have discovered seven new frog species belonging to the genus Nyctibatrachus, commonly known as Night Frogs. This is an outcome of five years of extensive explorations in the Western Ghats global biodiversity hotspot in India.

Four out of seven of the new species are miniature-sized frogs (12.2&ndash;15.4 mm), which can fit on a thumbnail or coin. These known to be the smallest&nbsp;frogs in the world.

Unlike other frogs&nbsp;in the genus that are predominantly stream dwelling, the newly found were found under damp forest leaf litter or marsh vegetation. Scientists were astonished by the relative abundance of these previously unknown species at their collection localities. &ldquo;In fact, the miniature species are locally abundant and fairly common but they have probably been overlooked because of their extremely small size, secretive habitats and insect-like calls&rdquo;, says Sonali Garg who undertook this study as part of her PhD research at University of Delhi.

The newly sampled frogs were confirmed as new species using DNA studies. Previously, the Night Frog genus comprised of 28 recognized species of which only three were miniature-sized (&lt;18 mm). Now the total number of known Nyctibatrachus species has increased to 35, of which 20 percent are diminutive in size.

This frog genus is endemic to the Western Ghats of India and represents an ancient group of frogs that diversified on the Indian landmass approximately 70&ndash;80 million years ago.

The discovery of several new species of ancient origin can provide useful insights into the evolution of endemic frog lineages in the Western Ghats, which is a leading amphibian hotspot. The past decade has witnessed an exponential increase in the number of new amphibian species described from this region. Of the total new species of amphibians (1581) described globally between the years 2006&ndash;2015, the highest number were from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest (approximately 182) followed by the Western Ghats-Sri Lanka biodiversity hotspot (approximately 159), with 103 species described alone from the Western Ghats region.

&ldquo;Over 32 percent, that is one-third of the Western Ghats frogs are already threatened with extinction. Out of the seven new species, five are facing considerable anthropogenic threats and require immediate conservation prioritization&rdquo;, says Prof SD Biju of Delhi University, who led the&nbsp;study.
