Two members of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's family have questioned the "credibility" of the Justice Mukherjee Commission's report, stating that it pronounced the icon of the freedom struggle dead without offering any information on the cause and circumstances.

In an open letter, his grand-nephew Surya Bose and grand-niece Madhuri Bose said Justice Manoj Kumar Mukherjee concluded in his report of November 8, 2005 that Netaji did not die in the plane crash as alleged, and the ashes in the Renkoji temple in Tokyo temple are not of Netaji.

But the Commission, which was set up in 1999, could not offer any information on whether Bose died in any other manner at any other place, or when and how, the letter, dated August 24, said.

"He (Justice Mukherjee) simply concluded that Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose is dead! The so-called evidence and key arguments advanced by Justice Mukherjee in support of his conclusion of no air crash in Taiwan and therefore no death of Netaji, are not credible," it added.

The two members of Bose's family said 75 years have passed since he was officially reported by the government of Japan to have died in an air crash in Taiwan on August 18, 1945 but the question of what actually happened to him remains alive and unanswered in the minds of many.

They sought DNA testing of the remains at the Renkoji temple in Tokyo and said this was raised by experts during the hearings of the Justice Mukherjee Commission, but was not acted upon.

The authorities of the Renkoji temple were ready to extend full cooperation but Justice Mukherjee decided not to proceed with the DNA testing, or even with a prior examination of the remains to determine if a DNA test would be possible, they claimed.

"Particularly with advances in science over the 15 years since, there may actually be a better chance now than before for a successful procedure," they said, seeking DNA examination of the ashes.

The report was tabled in Parliament on May 17, 2006.

At least ten investigations, both national and international, have taken place over the years concerning the disappearance of Netaji after the Taihoku air crash and all but one confirmed and supported the official position of Japan on the matter, it said.

"The exception was the Justice Mukherjee Commission of Inquiry (JMCI) of 2005, the third such inquiry instituted by the independent Government of India, and following in the wake of the Shah Nawaz Committee of Inquiry of 1956 and the Khosla Commission of 1974.

"The latter two (Nawaz and Khosla commissions) concluded that Netaji had died in a military hospital in Taihoku, Taiwan on August 18, 1945, as a result of the crash on take-off of a Japanese military aircraft in which he was travelling and that mortal remains held at Renkoji Temple in Tokyo Japan were his," the letter said.

In 2017, the Centre told Parliament that Bose died in the air crash in 1945.

On the birth anniversary of the freedom fighter on January 23, the Prime Minister inaugurated museums in the national capital and also paid tribute to him at Rajpath.

There is another touching story of a decrepit beggar woman contributing three rupees to Netaji in a huge gathering at Rangoon for donations to the National Bank established there by the Provisional Government of the Azad Hind Fouz. Netaji accepted it with tears in his eyes, realising that the poor woman would perhaps have to starve the next day and yet he felt duty-bound to honour her nationalism which was no less than that of others who contributed larger amounts.&nbsp;

When Netaji addressed a public meeting at Singapore on July 9, 1943, people listened to him in the midst of torrential rain and it was here that he greeted the congregation with his famous incantation &#39;Jai Hind&#39;. Lacs of Malayan dollars flowed into the fund of the Indian National Army(INA) and women happily parted with their jewelry. &nbsp;

How did he achieve such allegiance without an iota of coercion? Asha San in her diary of June 27, 1943, attributes this to his power of mesmerizing people and penetrating into the innermost recesses of their heart which Hitler, Mussolini, Sukarno and others could never do. From the testimony of Kalicharan Ghosh, it is known that during the flood relief campaign in North Bengal in 1922, Subhas used to lead from the front and visit the most perilous places himself first before asking others. His leg was full of blisters. The noted writer Narayan Ganguly has testified that during the flood in North Bengal in 1931, Subhas noted that most volunteers hesitated to wade with sacks of rice in knee-deep water. Seeing that, he instantly picked up a sack on his shoulders and stepped into the water.&nbsp; Others followed him immediately.&nbsp; When he was the Chief Executive Officer of Calcutta Corporation, Subhas himself started to clean the garbage at the Sealdah junction with a spade in his hand. Soon a crowd gathered round him and joined in his work and Calcutta became free from garbage in three days. This exemplary leadership was best manifested in the INA phase.&nbsp;

During the retreat of the INA, Netaji walked on foot with his soldiers for 10 miles from the Sitang river and refused to accept any special arrangement and took whatever food the soldiers were given as testified by S.A Ayer in his book &#39;Unto Him a Witness&#39;.&nbsp;

When Janki Thevar asked him to open his boots and take rest during the retreat on April 29, 1945, his entire leg was found to be full of blisters with which he walked mile after mile, refusing angrily to travel by motor when his comrades were straggling on foot.&nbsp;

From the testimony of Shaz Nawaz Khan in &#39;My Memories of INA and its Netaji&#39; has stated that he won the hearts of the people of East Asia by sharing their pains and sorrows. He left no stone unturned to ensure the comfort of the soldiers by personally inspecting kitchens and hospitals. He issued strict instructions that he would take the same food that was cooked for the soldiers.&nbsp;

From the testimony of Satyendra Nath Bose, it is known that Netaji regularly visited the wounded soldiers at the Burma State Hospital and to them he seemed just like God. B. G Kaul in &#39;The Untold Story&#39; has recalled that a soldier who had promised Netaji that he would set his foot on Indian soil kept his word but was mortally wounded during the Burma campaign. Before breathing his last he told his senior officer &lsquo;Tell Netaji I have kept my word.&rsquo; Kaul related this story to Jawaharlal Nehru who was visibly moved by it. &nbsp;

Netaji was probably the only leader in the world who was adored, revered and loved because he could cement an indissoluble spiritual bond of kinship with his fellowmen.&nbsp;

Opinion: What made Netaji Subhas Bose an exemplary leader

It happened to me for the second time. The realisation occurred slowly but it embraced me fully. Last time around when I went to South Africa with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in 2013 to cover BRICS summit, my excitement was shooting through the roof. The journey had given me an opportunity to see, smell and feel places associated with Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. My excitement knew no bounds. 
&nbsp; 
I must have marvelled 100 times on board the special plane as to how would I feel at the station where Gandhi was thrown out of the train onto the pavement because of the colour of his skin. I was excited about going to the ashram in Durban. I also had the repressed feeling of meeting grateful black men and women with a thanking smile plastered on their faces. I also felt that as an Indian, I would be able to renew a historical association at an individual level as reportage was slowly turning into a pilgrimage. 
&nbsp; 
The excitement which I was barely able to contain ebbed away within minutes me stepping out of the car and getting inside the station. It was empty. It remained empty. It dawned on me that this place was no marker of anything politically significant in contemporary South Africa. 
&nbsp; 
The Gandhi South Africa narrative which I read in books didn&rsquo;t exist when interacted with people. Four years down the line African universities went through the wave of protest against Gandhi on grounds of being racist. 
&nbsp; 
In Myanmar, I was stuck with a similar feeling about cultural connections and shared the colonial experience but again, the opposite awaited me. Within 24 hours of landing, the imagery of the famous song from the film Patanga, released in 1949 and sung by C Ravichandran and Shamshad Begum, Mere Piya Gaye Rangoon Wahan Se Kiya Hai Telephone (My lover has gone to Rangoon and has called me from there), vanished from my head.&nbsp;

Till date, Myanmar&rsquo;s government has not acknowledged the official headquarters of the Azad Hind Fauj of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. In the past, the government has razed down a couple of quarter he lived in. Locals told me that the place where Rabindranath Tagore stayed is not in a good condition either. Despite the cultural connect, a disconnect is evident. The same can be said of Nepal where we share the religion.

All of this brings me to one conclusion that relationship between nations needs to be watered regularly which is based on active and current needs.

The lesson that I drew from this experience is that, what one considers to be&nbsp;important is not necessarily done so by the other country. I also realised that nation-states always recreate their own histories where they keep themselves at the centre, whereas view from outside remains marginal or tangential.

Why should an average Myanmaris feel strongly about Bal Gangadhar Tilak being imprisoned in Mandalay for 6 years? Indian political establishment must realise that there is a limit to the politics of connecting as hard-nosed diplomacy works better than connects.
