Nepal floods: Inside desperate tunnel rescue as over 100 workers remain trapped

The death toll from the catastrophic flash floods that tore through Nepal and parts of Tibet this week has climbed to750, as rescue teams battle worsening weather and treacherous terrain in a desperate search for more than 3,000 people still missing. Nepal has reported 734 deaths and 2,498 people missing, while authorities in Tibet confirmed 16 deaths and 546 missing.<h2>Poor weather hampers rescue operations</h2>Poor weather has repeatedly disrupted helicopter missions, complicating efforts to reach remote Himalayan communities cut off by landslides, mud and destroyed roads. In hard-hit Nuwakot district, aircraft resumed operations after a weather delay, ferrying food and other emergency supplies into isolated areas and evacuating survivors.Nepal says more than 3,700 people have been rescued so far. But the search has taken on added urgency around hydropower projects, where officials fear more than 100 workers may still be trapped inside tunnels at the Trishuli 3A and 3B sites.<h2>Search intensifies for trapped hydropower workers</h2>Energy Minister Biraj Bhakta Shrestha said "rescue efforts are going on in multiple tunnel sites." Teams have managed to pump air into one tunnel after breaking through thick mud, while attempts are underway to send cameras inside.Specialist rescue teams from India and China have joined Nepalese forces, while mountain rescue experts are also being deployed.Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal said finding those still missing was "currently our national priority."<h2>Fresh flood fears after glacier collapse</h2>The disaster has also triggered fears of further flooding after a new lake formed high in the Himalayas following the glacier collapse believed to have caused the initial devastation. Scientists say the collapse unleashed huge volumes of rock, ice and water into river valleys below.<h2>US announces $3.6 million in aid</h2>The United States has pledged more than $3.6 million in emergency assistance to Nepal as rescue efforts continue. The funding will support immediate humanitarian needs, including food aid expected to reach up to 10,000 households. Washington has also said it is coordinating with Nepalese authorities to ensure relief supplies reach communities affected by the devastating floods.

A deep sense of grief has descended on an Isha Foundation camp in Tibet after 80 members of its pilgrimage group went missing following devastating flash floods near the Nepal-Tibet border. The floods swept away infrastructure and affected towns in the region. Isha Foundation founder Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev broke down while giving an update on the missing pilgrims. He appealed to Indian and Chinese authorities to allow him and a small team of volunteers to travel to Gyirong in Tibet and help search for the missing members. The group was returning from the Kailash pilgrimage when the floods struck. The pilgrims had stopped at an immigration centre in Gyirong near the Tibet-Nepal border when floodwaters inundated the building. Sadhguru delivered a message about the disaster and the missing pilgrims while visibly distressed. A video shared on X also captured the sound of his followers wailing in the background. ‘We are in absolute pain’: Sadhguru breaks down as 80 pilgrims remain missing after Nepal floods | Video

Nepal was struck by a deadly disaster on Wednesday (Aug 26) after flash floods swallowed communities near the Tibetan border, resulting in widespread loss of life and damage to infrastructure. More than 165 people were killed in the catastrophic event, while hundreds of others still remain missing as rescuers race to save survivors. However, the nightmare may not be over yet for Nepal as experts warn of a second possible flash flood. The flood, which swept through the transboundary Lhende Khola and Bhote Koshi river systems in Rasuwa district, is suspected to have been caused by a massive ice-rock avalanche or a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) on the Tibetan side. Concerns have been raised that the debris left behind by the initial disaster could trigger another violent surge. As ice, mud and boulders crashed through narrow mountain valleys, they may have blocked sections of the river, creating unstable temporary dams.If water continues to build behind those blockages, their collapse could unleash another sudden “wall of water” downstream. The terrain offers little room for error. Deep Himalayan gorges can funnel floodwaters into narrow channels, dramatically increasing their speed and destructive force. The first surge also carried a huge load of sediment and boulders, creating powerful mudflows capable of ripping apart bridges and sweeping away heavy machinery.Rescue operations are being complicated by the same landscape. Helicopters face severe weather and difficult high-altitude conditions, while unstable water levels and thick sediment make landing increasingly risky. The flood struck near the Gyirong Port border crossing, destroying infrastructure and cutting power and communication links. Hundreds of travellers remain unaccounted for, including Indian pilgrims travelling towards the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra.Nepal’s Army, Armed Police Force and specialised teams are using drones, sniffer dogs and satellite equipment to search for survivors stranded on high ground. But the threat does not end at the border. The Bhote Koshi flows into the Trishuli and Narayani river systems, putting authorities in northern Bihar and Uttar Pradesh on alert. For rescuers, the clock is ticking. The Himalayas may still have another surge to send downstream.
