A man in New Jersey was left partially paralysed after a healthcare startup failed to diagnose a blockage in his brain. He is now suing the company, The Independent reported.

Prenuvo, a California-based company, has Kim Kardashian on its client list with several more celebrities endorsing it. 23andMe founder Anne Wojcicki is among its A-list investors.

The startup offers "an MRI like no other" which is counted as a boutique procedure not covered by insurance. It involves an AI-assisted full-body scan that will cost you $2,500.

Sean Clifford paid for the procedure in July 2023 hoping to get an accurate analysis. However, he claims that the company botched the diagnosis and gave him a clean chit.&nbsp;

The full body scan is supposed to check “for hundreds of conditions, including most solid tumours at Stage 1, and silent killers like aneurysms."

However, it failed to catch an anomaly in Clifford's brain and later he suffered a stroke.

"No evidence of proximal intracranial arterial aneurysm," the Prenuvo radiologist who read Clifford’s scan wrote in his chart.

But, his diagnosis proved wrong and there was a blockage in Clifford’s brain. The lawsuit, obtained by The Independent, states that there was an “obvious” vascular blockage in Clifford’s brain and any qualified physician should have caught it.&nbsp;

It further states that Clifford sustained "a full-blown catastrophic stroke… in the exact same area… where he had the Prenuvo scan". He has had to undergo three emergency brain surgeries to save his life.

The other problems he is faced with include extensive paralysis on the left side of his body, permanent double vision and cognitive delays. He is unable to speak properly, has bladder control issues, and also has "profound neurological deficits".

Clifford's attorney Neal Bhushan told the publication, "[It] could have been prevented, had the MRI scan been properly interpreted."

A third-party neurologist hired by the family says the report "clearly shows" a 60 per cent narrowing of the proximal right middle cerebral artery.

Supermodel Cindy Crawford is one of the backers of the company, and Kim Kardashian and Paris Hilton promote it, talking about it on social media.&nbsp;

MRI machines are a serious matter. These machines produce images of our bodily tissues for doctors to analyse. But the machines themselves are not to be trifled with. They produce insanely powerful magnetic fields which can cause injuries or even death if metallic objects are anywhere near when the machine is operating.

A 57-year-old woman in Wisconsin got first-hand experience of this. As per a report in ScienceAlert, the woman received a superficial wound to her buttocks when a concealed weapon on her was subjected to the powerful magnetic field generated by an MRI machine.

The United States Food and Drug Administration mentioned the incident in its report.

The study titled — "Semantic reconstruction of continuous language from non-invasive brain recordings" — noted that the system won't replicate each word but it reconstructs the brief of what a person hears or imagines.&nbsp;

Alexander Huth, a co-author of the study and an assistant professor of neuroscience and computer science at The University of Texas at Austin, said: "It's getting at the ideas behind the words, the semantics, the meaning."&nbsp;

In the study, published on May 1, it was mentioned that a system of a non-invasive decoder, which&nbsp;reconstructs continuous language from cortical semantic representations recorded using functional MRI, has been introduced.&nbsp;

"Given novel brain recordings, this decoder generates intelligible word sequences that recover the meaning of perceived speech, imagined speech and even silent videos, demonstrating that a single decoder can be applied to a range of tasks," part of the study mentioned.&nbsp;

The authors have also stated that they have tested the decoder across the cortex and found that continuous language can be separately decoded from multiple regions.&nbsp;

They added that we tested whether successful decoding requires subject cooperation and found that subject cooperation is required both to train and to apply the decoder — as brain–computer interfaces should respect mental privacy.&nbsp;

They said, "Our findings demonstrate the viability of non-invasive language brain–computer interfaces."&nbsp;

To derive the result, the researchers trained decoders for three subjects. They evaluated each subject’s decoder on separate, single-trial brain responses that were recorded while the subject listened to novel test stories that were not used for model training.&nbsp;

The researchers said that as their decoder represents language using semantic features rather than motor or auditory features, its predictions should capture the meaning of the stimuli.&nbsp;

"Results show that the decoded word sequences captured not only the meaning of the stimuli but often even exact words and phrases, demonstrating that fine-grained semantic information can be recovered," the study mentioned.&nbsp;

"Both the patient and his companion were properly instructed regarding the procedures for accessing the examination room and warned about the removal of any and all metallic objects."

An MRI machine generates magnetic field in order to image internal organs accurately. This magnetic field is enough to pull objects towards it or at least cause a magnetic effect on them.

The gun which the Novaes was carrying under his clothes, went off, injuring him in the abdomen. He was rushed to Sao Luiz Morumbi Hospital where he passed away few weeks later.

MRI machine triggers handgun, man dies in freak accident

After conducting an analysis of cranial fossils, scientists have identified the reason behind the shrinking of the human brain 3,000 years ago.

The study, published in the journal Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution, shows that our ancestors had brains that were larger than our own.

According to the study's lead author Jeremy DeSilva, an anthropologist at Dartmouth College in the United States, "This is much more recent than we anticipated. We were expecting something closer to 30,000 years ago."

The brain, which has been humans’ biggest advantage in surviving catastrophes and subjugating other species throughout history, contains 86 million neurons.

In comparison, an ant's brain is roughly one tenth of a cubic millimetre in volume and contains just 250,000 neurons.

“The assumption has been that brain evolution was basically done by the Pleistocene, so when you find a skeleton or a skull that’s 4,000 years old, people don’t’ run to measure the brain size. The assumption is it’s going to be the same as people living today and the same as people living in the late-Pleistocene,” DeSilva said.

“What we were able to determine is that the downward trend is best positioned around 3,000 years ago.”

The human brain, which weighs about three pounds (1.4 kgs) and is mostly made of water, is the building block of the nervous system and every neuron in the brain may send as many as 1,000 signals at an impressive speed of up to 250 miles an hour.

“As these social insects become more and more social, their neural ganglia get bigger, but they reach a point where there’s so many of them that they specialize and rely on each other through collective intelligence,” DeSilva said.

He added “Our interpretation is that humans have become more social and might be experiencing something similar. If you can have a smaller brain, and store more information outside, and then interact with that in a more complex way, you can have the best of both worlds where your collective intelligence is increasing as a society and as a population, even though each individual brain might be getting a little smaller.”

And since a single neuron can connect to at least 1,000 other neurons, a single brain may have at least 100 trillion connections in all. Yet brain signals, which run on electricity, involve less than one-tenth the voltage of an ordinary flashlight battery.

“As humans moved into more settled communities, what we see with the beginnings of agriculture is an increase in disease,” DeSilva said.&nbsp;

“More humans in a confined area means an easier spread of infectious disease, and if your body is exposed to these pathogens, you’re going to use a lot of your energy on the immune system, which means less energy for brain growth,” he added.&nbsp;
