Local reports mentioned that the car started to malfunction after the driver tried to park it. The park button apparently did not work, and the brakes also failed. The car started to accelerate instead of stopping.&nbsp;

Tesla reports two more crash fatalities in Model 3 cars linked to advanced driver assistance system

Tesla delivered its first batch of China-made cars on Monday, less than a year after the electric vehicle company broke ground on its first plant outside the United States.

Work began on the firm's multibillion-dollar Shanghai "Gigafactory" in January, allowing the company to skirt trade tensions between China and the US and sell directly to the world's largest "green" vehicle market.

The first cars to roll off the assembly line -- 15 of Tesla's mid-price, mass-market Model 3 design -- were given to employees who had placed advance orders during a ceremony at the plant.

Tesla plans to begin large-scale deliveries of China-made Model 3 sedans next month, said the firm's China general manager Wang Hao.

The company was now producing more than 1,000 cars per week in China and hoped to double the figure next year, manufacturing director Song Gang told Bloomberg News.

Chief executive Elon Musk has said production could rise to 3,000 vehicles per week in the future.&nbsp;

China typically requires foreign automakers to forge joint ventures with domestic firms when establishing manufacturing plants, which means sharing profits and technology with local partners.

But Tesla's China venture is wholly owned by the US company, and Tesla's decision to invest in Shanghai has been rewarded with preferential treatment.

Authorities last week announced the waiver of a 10 per cent purchase tax for locally made Model 3 vehicles, priced at 355,800 yuan ($50,900).

Earlier in December the government also approved a subsidy of up to 25,000 yuan per car.

US authorities are investigating a fatal Tesla Inc Model S crash in Florida last Sunday that killed the driver and caused a massive fire, the second fatal Tesla crash&nbsp;in the state this week being probed, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said on Saturday.

The agency and the National Transportation Safety Board said late on Friday they were sending teams to investigate the other fatal crash Friday in Delray Beach, Florida of a 2018 Model 3 that crashed into a semi-trailer.

An NHTSA spokesman confirmed Saturday the agency has an "ongoing investigation" into the Sunday Tesla crash in Davie, Florida, and "will take additional actions if appropriate."

Tesla did not immediately comment Saturday.

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported Monday the 2016 Tesla Model S caught fire and burned the 48-year-old driver beyond recognition. The newspaper said the Tesla battery repeatedly caught fire after being transported to a towing facility.

NHTSA, the auto safety regulator, can demand a recall if it believes a defect poses an unreasonable safety risk, while the NTSB makes safety recommendations.

NHTSA and NTSB are investigating a number of crashes since 2017 that focus on two primary issues: the role of Tesla's driver assistance technology Autopilot in accidents and some significant battery fires in the electric vehicles after crashes, including cases of batteries reigniting.

A report on Friday's crash released by the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Department did not indicate if Autopilot was engaged in the crash that killed the 50-year-old Tesla Model 3 owner.

The report said the Tesla struck a tractor-trailer and the roof was sheared off as it passed underneath the trailer and stopped three-tenths of a mile south of the collision. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

NTSB is sending a team of three to conduct a safety investigation, while NHTSA is sending a field team.

Some Tesla drivers say they are able to avoid putting their hands on the wheel for extended periods when using Autopilot, while Tesla advises drivers that they must keep their hands on the steering wheel and pay attention while using Autopilot.

NHTSA is also probing the January 2018 crash of a Tesla vehicle apparently travelling in Autopilot that struck a fire truck in Culver City, California, a May 2018 crash in Utah of a Tesla in Autopilot mode and a May 2018 Tesla accident in Florida that killed two teenagers and injured another but was not in Autopilot.

The NTSB is investigating three earlier Tesla incidents being reviewed by NHTSA, as well as an August 2017 Tesla battery fire in California, in which an owner ran into his garage.

Friday's crash is similar to the first fatal Tesla crash linked to Autopilot.

In May 2016, a Tesla Model S driver was killed near Williston, Florida, using Autopilot when he slammed into a tractor-trailer that also sheared off the vehicle roof.

Tesla Motors said Wednesday it will begin European deliveries of its long-awaited mass-market Model 3 electric car from February.

A spokesperson told AFP the first to take delivery would be customers who had reserved their Model 3 starting March 2016 if they confirm their order by January 1.

The spokesperson said customers would be invited to confirm over the coming weeks, starting Wednesday.

Tesla's mid-size, four-door all-electric family car was first unveiled in its US home base in July last year.

Controversial founder Elon Musk in October described the Model 3 as "the best-selling car in the US in terms of revenue and the 5th best-selling car in terms of volume."

Musk, recently forced to step back from the role of chairman over a tweet in which he said he planned to take the firm private, says he wants to make the Model 3, which currently starts at around $50,000 (44,000 euros), a "mainstream product."

With its mid-range battery pack the Model 3 is more compact and lighter than the brand's luxury S and X models and is designed to make Tesla world leader as a producer of electric cars as it scales up production capacity.

The company has in recent weeks seen sales volumes comparable to more established marques such as German trio Audi, BMW and Mercedes, despite its much narrower product range.

Tesla now looks to have overcome production capacity concerns which have worried investors for months. Between January and September the firm said global deliveries of all models had reached 126,000 -- more than 53,000 of those coming in the third quarter.

If the brand can keep that up then deliveries across 2018 are set to hit around 180,000 compared with 100,000 last year.

For the time being, European customers will only have two Model 3 options.

One is a long-range version delivering 544 kilometres (338 miles) on a single charge costing from around 60,000 euros before any incentives such as the "eco-bonus" in France worth 6,000 euros. A dual-motor Performance model starts from around 70,000 euros.

Tesla has promised to supply much cheaper versions in due course, coming nearer to the initial $35,000 pricing.

The automaker has not indicated how many Model 3 reservations European clients have made.

Tesla Inc on Friday asked a court to dismiss a securities fraud lawsuit by shareholders who said the electric vehicle maker gave false public statements about the progress of producing its new Model 3 sedan.

In a filing in federal court in San Francisco, Tesla said that its statements about the challenges the company faced with Model 3 were "frank and in plain language," including repeated disclosures by Chief Executive Elon Musk of "production hell."

Tesla did not seek to hide the truth, its motion to dismiss said.

The company says its Model 3 has experienced numerous "bottlenecks" from problems with Tesla's battery module process at its Nevada Gigafactory to the general assembly at its Fremont plant.

Tesla is under pressure to deliver the Model 3 to reap revenue and stem massive spending that has put Tesla's finances in the red. The ramp of the Model 3, Tesla said in the court filing, was "the first of its kind," with difficulties likely to crop up after it got underway.

The lawsuit filed last October seeks class-action status for shareholders who bought Tesla stock between May 4, 2016, through October 6, 2017, inclusive. It said shareholders bought "artificially inflated" shares because Musk and other executives misled them with their statements.

Tesla made such statements during the lead-up to, and early production of, its Model 3 sedan and failed to disclose that the company was "woefully unprepared" for the vehicle's production, the lawsuit said.

A hearing is scheduled for August.

Tesla seeks to dismiss securities fraud lawsuit: US court document

Tesla Inc shares slumped 5 percent on Monday as investors awaited production numbers for the closely watched Model 3, a cheaper vehicle that analysts see as crucial to the luxury electric automaker's long-term profitability.

A recent crash involving Tesla's autopilot technology and concerns about the company's ability to raise new capital also took a toll.

Tesla, founded by billionaire Elon Musk, declined to comment on production numbers for the Model 3, which are expected to be released this week.

The stock briefly pared losses after auto industry blogs - citing an unverified memo - reported that production of the Model 3 passed the 2,000 per week production rate. That would be short of Tesla`s own target of 2,500 per week for the end of March but far above the 793 Model 3s built in the final week of last year.

"Musk himself is focusing time on Model 3 production because it is the "highest priority," a Tesla spokesman said on Monday, saying that engineering chief Doug Field was focused on vehicle engineering.

The company's statement followed a report that Musk had taken charge of Model 3 production after several missed production deadlines.

In a series of tweets Musk said he had asked Field to manage both engineering and production to better align both businesses, a year earlier.

"Right now, tho(ugh), better to divide & conquer, so I'm back to sleeping at factory," he tweeted.

Some buy-side Tesla watchers questioned whether the company could sustain such numbers - if they prove to be true - and also worried about profitability.&nbsp;

"There's been a number of things combined to impact the stock," said Tony Boase, senior research analyst with Nuveen Asset Management in Minneapolis. In addition to the Model 3 production rate, he cited a recent Moody's downgrade of Tesla's credit rating and the crash of a Tesla Model X and the company's comments since the crash.

"It comes down to the Model 3. That's the key," Boase said. "If they can profitably build those cars that would be a huge step in the right direction.

"If you couldn't do (2,000) without using all the resources and at a decent margin level, what have you really achieved?" he added.

Another investor who said he has profitably sold Tesla shares short four times in the last 18 months was also sceptical.

"Are they really at 2,000 or did they just stuff their system to achieve 2,000 for last week?" said David Kudla, chief executive and chief investment strategist at Mainstay Capital Management, who said he currently has no bets on Tesla.

"The only position I'd have on it is short because they aren't making any money. Their operating losses are growing. The stock's been overvalued for months," he said.

Tesla said on Friday that the Model X involved in a fatal crash in California last week had activated its Autopilot system, raising new questions about the semi-autonomous system that handles some driving tasks.

Tesla's shares closed down $13.65 at $252.48 on Monday, after earlier hitting their lowest level in just over a year. So far in 2018, the shares are down 19 percent, at a time when technology shares have suffered particularly as stock prices fall across the board.

Tesla has said it had about 500,000 advance reservations from customers for the Model 3, but manufacturing bottlenecks since last July have delayed production and deliveries to customers, exacerbating the company's need for cash.&nbsp;

Failure to meet targets and pressures on funding prompted Moody's downgrade last week, saying that Tesla was likely to raise more than $2 billion in new capital, partly to cover about $1.2 billion in convertible bonds due by March 2019.

Tesla still has loyal investors, including Zevenbergen Capital Investments in Seattle, which has owned the stock since the company's initial public offering.&nbsp;

"Historically, volatility has provided good entry points. Looking at it today we believe the demand outlook remains robust and unchanged," said Joseph Dennison, portfolio manager at Zevenbergen. "I still believe their product targets and outlook they've given in the past. While they've been optimistic on the timing they've always followed through."
