The conservative-dominated Supreme Court on Friday overturned its monumental decision in Roe v. Wade, putting an end to the federal right to abortions it established nearly 50 years ago.&nbsp;

The seismic ruling immediately triggered a wave of right-leaning states to impose new bans on the procedure with Missouri being the first.&nbsp;

Less than two hours after the court's decision, the state's attorney general Eric Schmitt tweeted a photo of himself signing off on the prohibition, calling the occasion "a monumental day for the sanctity of life".

The swift ban forced the Planned Parenthood clinic on St. Louis’ Forest Park Avenue which had been the last facility providing abortions in the state to immediately stop offering the procedure.

"Today, for me, it's tragic because we fought so hard to get this law passed in 1973," said Lukehart, who was accompanied by her granddaughter Audrey at the protest outside the Planned Parenthood clinic.&nbsp;

"Now 50 years later, they have jerked this away from us. This is wrong. It's totally wrong," she said.

'We cannot stand by'

While Midwestern, conservative Missouri was the first state to ban abortions after the ruling, it was not the last.

As of Friday evening, at least six other states had imposed bans: Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and South Dakota.&nbsp;

Addressing the crowd through a megaphone, one speaker said: "We cannot stand by while our rights are taken away from us."

Back at the Planned Parenthood clinic, protester Alec Ryan, 31, said the new bans on abortion would have tangible consequences.

"So there are going to be women and pregnant people who are trapped in abusive marriages because they can't get an abortion. There are going to be people who are put in situations that they shouldn't be put into," he told AFP.&nbsp;

"It's going to be a tragedy."

Linda Locke, who sits on the Planned Parenthood's board in St Louis, worried about the impact of Friday's decision on younger generations.

"I have granddaughters, right?" she said. "And they all grew up thinking their body was under their control. And today, it's just shocking to me and disappointing that the Supreme Court just told them that, 'No, you don't.&nbsp;We don't trust you to make decisions about your own body.''

Missouri first US state to ban abortion after top court ruling

It was a February day so overcast that noon looked like dusk, and Frances McDormand felt a little rattled. She told me this as we ambled down the main street of the small coastal town where she lives, a modest, hidden place so far from Hollywood that studio searchlights would have a hard time finding it. Still, someone had managed.

Earlier that day, the phone rang at McDormand’s house, and while she didn’t recognize the man on the other end, he certainly knew who &lt;em&gt;she &lt;/em&gt;was. When the caller told her he was watching “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” the 2017 movie in which she plays an avenging mother named Mildred, McDormand realized she was on the phone with a fan who had tracked down her unlisted landline.

“It was the first creepy call I’ve gotten in 16 years here,” she told me. Though she hung up right away, McDormand now wondered what she might have asked him: “OK, what part were you watching? The scene where I threw the Molotov cocktail at the police station?”

Maybe the fan had hoped to speak with righteous Mildred, who harangues priests and cops and hurls fire bombs in the pursuit of justice. Instead, he reached Frances McDormand, a 63-year-old woman who chats up everybody she comes across in her small town, doesn’t like to think of herself as famous, and has won two Oscars.

This is the tricky thing about how persuasively McDormand embodies her characters: You think you know&lt;em&gt; her&lt;/em&gt; because you’re certain you know them. Whether it’s kindhearted Marge from “Fargo,” tetchy Olive from “Olive Kitteridge,” or bohemian Jane in “Laurel Canyon,” McDormand specializes in playing women with worldviews. You can tell right away what they like and don’t like, who they would be friendly with and who they can’t stand.

Since she rarely grants interviews, most people only see the real McDormand blazing an iconoclastic streak through televised awards shows, where she is barefaced instead of Botoxed and once wore her own jean jacket in lieu of borrowed couture. (In Hollywood, this mild noncompliance is tantamount to a declaration of war.) McDormand is highly skeptical of any ceremony where actors are done up like glamorous gladiators, and when her husband, filmmaker Joel Coen, was once asked to produce the Oscars alongside his brother, Ethan, McDormand suggested they set the telecast at Coney Island, which would have forced Hollywood glitterati to mingle with the freak show.

That morning’s phone call aside, “I get to live my more authentic self here,” she said, “and I don’t have to pretend to be anybody else.”

STILL, THE LINE BETWEEN McDORMAND and her characters will only grow blurrier with the release of her intimate new film, “Nomadland.” In this sunset-dappled drama from the director Chloé Zhao, McDormand plays Fern, a widow who packs her things into a van and joins up with a tribe of older itinerant workers to spend their golden years working odd jobs all across the American West.

“Nomadland” would eventually require more from this private star than she is used to giving, but when McDormand first met with Zhao in early 2018, she was mostly curious what the up-and-coming director would think of her: “I was like, ‘Man, I just want to be relevant. Do you think I’m relevant?’”

But the result is a performance that McDormand has never given before, one that has less to do with acting and more to do with simply &lt;em&gt;being&lt;/em&gt;. In fact, why don’t you just write a role for men and then let me play it?’”

She had married Coen not long after making her screen debut in the 1984 noir “Blood Simple,” which he directed with Ethan. Twelve years later, the Coen brothers would give McDormand her signature role, one that could only be played by a woman: Marge, the chirpy, pregnant police chief in “Fargo.”

Opposing the bill, Dr Leana Wen, president of Planned Parenthood Action Fund, said it was a "terrifying time" for women in America.

"Planned Parenthood will not sit by and watch as politicians take our rights and freedoms to women's health care away," Wen said in a statement. "We will fight in Missouri, Georgia, Alabama, and everywhere else politicians interfere with medical care because women’s health care is health care and health care is a human right."

Renewed efforts to roll back Roe v. Wade, the landmark US&nbsp;Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion nationwide in 1973, have been emboldened by two judicial appointments by President Donald Trump that have given conservatives a solid majority on the court.

Muslim Americans have helped raise more than $91,000 to repair vandalised headstones at a Jewish cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri, according to an online fundraising page, amid attacks and threats against Jewish institutions.&nbsp;

US&nbsp;vice president Mike Pence visited the graveyard on Wednesday and told clean-up volunteers, state officials and reporters that there was no place in America for hatred, violence, anti-Semitism or acts of prejudice.&nbsp;

&quot;I must tell you the people of Missouri are inspiring the nation by your love and care of this place, for the Jewish community in Missouri and I want to thank you for that inspiration,&quot; Pence said.

About 170 headstones were toppled or damaged at the century-old Chesed Shel Emeth Society cemetery over the weekend, according to cemetery staff.&nbsp;

Some Jewish groups described the vandalism and threats as the latest evidence that anti-Semitic groups have been emboldened by the election of Donald Trump as US&nbsp;president. His campaign last year drew the support of white nationalists and right-wing groups, despite his disavowals of them.

&quot;Muslim Americans stand in solidarity with the Jewish-American community to condemn this horrific act of desecration,&quot; the fundraisers said on their website.

More than 3,000 people had donated $91,583 by late Wednesday afternoon. Cemetery staff declined comment on the fundraising.

On Wednesday the Anti-Defamation League, a Jewish advocacy group, said its national headquarters in New York City received an anonymous bomb threat but was later given the all clear.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo ordered state police to investigate and work with federal and local law enforcement. In a statement, Cuomo said the threats were &quot;now a national crisis&quot; because of their regularity.

Trump condemned the previous threats as anti-Semitism for the first time on Tuesday after repeatedly declining to do so when asked by journalists last week. Some Jewish organizations have criticized his approach.

The fundraising effort was launched by Linda Sarsour, a liberal political activist, and Tarek El-Messidi, the founding director of Celebrate Mercy, a non-profit organisation that teaches the public about Mohammad, the founder of Islam.

Sarsour was a supporter of US&nbsp;Senator Bernie Sanders in his bid to become the Democratic Party&#39;s presidential candidate, and was one of the organizers of the Women&#39;s March on Washington on Jan. 21, the day after Trump&#39;s inauguration.
