Microsoft launches AI Odyssey to empower 100,000 developers in India

Microsoft on Thursday (Jan&nbsp;4) announced first major change to Windows keyboard in last three decades as it said that a new AI button, linked to Microsoft Copilot, will be added in laptops and other devices that will roll out in near future. The button will be called the Copilot key and will be placed to the right of the space bar. When pressed, it will activate the Copilot service which Microsoft released recently.

The AI service will help people in variety of tasks like summarising information in a document, answering your queries which you would ask a search engine, recommending music and much more.

"We believe it will empower people to participate in the AI transformation more easily," Yusuf Mehdi, Microsoft's executive vice president and consumer chief marketing officer, wrote in a blog post published Thursday. "The new key will invoke the Copilot in Windows experience to make it seamless to engage Copilot in your day to day."&nbsp;

"Windows mixed reality is deprecated and will be removed in a future release of Windows," Microsoft said.

Last year, Business Insider reported that Microsoft junked plans for HoloLens 3. The move by the tech giant was seen to spell the end of augmented reality headsets in that form.

Previously, when Microsoft was seen to be taking interest in augmented and virtual reality space, companies like Acer, Dell, Lenovo, Asus, HP, and Samsung, began making their mixed reality headsets compatible with Microsoft's platform.

However, Microsoft later began to downsize its virtual reality division. Last year, HoloLens head Alex Kipman left the company after allegations of sexual misconduct were levelled against him. Later on, Microsoft cut 10,000 jobs. This had an effect on the company's mixed reality projects including AltspaceVR app which is now discontinued.

Microsoft does not appear to have pulled the plug on mixed reality completely as the company continues to work on other applications of VR like Microsoft Mesh app. The app will soon let co-workers in a company meet each other in a virtual space without the need of a headset.

In addition to this, Microsoft has also started allowing Quest users access to Office apps and Xbox Cloud Gaming platform.

Gemini AI boosts Alphabet's stock as Google seeks to regain AI leadership from Microsoft

Google has called on Britain’s antitrust regulator to take action against Microsoft, claiming its business practices had left rivals at a significant disadvantage, according to a letter seen by Reuters.

Microsoft and Amazon have faced mounting scrutiny around the world over their dominance of the cloud computing industry, with regulators in Britain, the European Union, and the U.S. probing the leading providers’ market power.

The CMA (Competition and Markets Authority) launched an investigation into Britain’s cloud computing industry in October, following a referral from media regulator Ofcom which highlighted Amazon and Microsoft’s dominance of the market.

In 2022, Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft's Azure had a combined 70-80 per cent share of Britain's public cloud infrastructure services market, Ofcom said. Google’s cloud division was their closest competitor, at around 5-10 per cent.

In a letter submitted to the CMA, Google said Microsoft’s licensing practices, unfairly discouraged customers from using competitor services, even as a secondary provider alongside Azure.

“With Microsoft’s licensing restrictions in particular, UK customers are left with no economically reasonable alternative but to use Azure as their cloud services provider, even if they prefer the prices, quality, security, innovations, and features of rivals,” Google said in its letter to the CMA.

Such practices directly harmed customers, and were the only significant barrier to competition in Britain’s cloud computing market, the company said.

Microsoft last year updated its licensing rules to address such concerns and promote competition, though the changes did not satisfy rivals. Microsoft declined to comment for this story.

“The problem we run into with Microsoft is that there's no technical issue, but you have licensing restrictions which means we are now being prevented from competing.”&nbsp;

Google made six recommendations to the CMA, including forcing Microsoft to improve interoperability for customers using Azure and alongside other cloud services, and banning it from withholding security updates from those that switch.

A memo was shared with OpenAI staff on Wednesday (Nov 29) apprising them of the development.

The memo was later posted to OpenAI's blog.

It also had a list of priorities from CEO Sam Altman as to how the company would move forward.

The startup went through a chaotic phase on November 17 when Sam Altman was fired.

Soon after his firing, OpenAI staff and investors rebelled, forcing OpenAI's hand to rehire Altman.

Tech giant Microsoft, which has invested billions of dollars in ChatGPT maker OpenAI, has now got a seat on the board that recently fired CEO Sam Altman, kicking off an incredible series of events that saw him joining Microsoft, then returning to OpenAI as CEO. A memo was shared with OpenAI staff on Wednesday (Nov 29) apprising them of the development. The memo was later posted to OpenAI's blog. It also had a list of priorities from CEO Sam Altman as to how the company would move forward. The startup went through a chaotic phase on November 17 when Sam Altman was fired. Soon after his firing, OpenAI staff and investors rebelled, forcing OpenAI's hand to rehire Altman. When the dramatic events were unfolding less than two weeks ago, Microsoft had offered to hire not only Altman but OpenAI's 750-strong staff, essentially creating an existential crisis for the startup. Following a recent boardroom upheaval that had OpenAI in chaos over the last few days, former CEO Sam Altman is set to return to his position in the company.

Speculation about his return to OpenAI was confirmed by the company after it released a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, stating, “We have reached an agreement in principle for Sam Altman to return to OpenAI as CEO with a new initial board of Bret Taylor (Chair), Larry Summers, and Adam D'Angelo. We are collaborating to figure out the details. Thank you so much for your patience through this.”

In response Altman wrote on X saying, “I love OpenAI, and everything I’ve done over the past few days has been in service of keeping this team and its mission together. When I decided to join Microsoft on Sunday evening, it was clear that was the best path for me and the team. With the new board and with Satya’s support, I’m looking forward to returning to OpenAI, and building on our strong partnership with Microsoft.”
