Mick Schumacher, the 20-year-old son of seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher, on Sunday claimed his first Formula Two victory ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix.

The German driver won the 28-lap 'sprint' race for Prema Racing after starting from pole position in a reverse grid race. He had finished eighth in Saturday’s full-length feature race.

Schumacher, who is a member of Ferrari’s driver academy, finished 1.5 seconds ahead of Honda-backed Nobuharu Matsushita of Carlin. His previous best result was fourth at the Austrian Grand Prix in June.

Currently 15th in the overall standings, he has had a mixed season with a fourth-placed finish last month in Austria his best result so far.

"I think Mick is showing a real good performance,” said Toro Rosso team boss Franz Tost, who worked with Mick's uncle Ralf Schumacher at Williams.

"He showed some very good races, in some other races he was involved in incidents, but it is a learning year. I’m convinced that he will make his way into Formula One."

The series feeds into Formula One, and this year's top three finishers - George Russell, Lando Norris and Alexander Albon - have all secured seats with grand prix teams for 2019.

Mick Schumacher won the Formula Three European championship this year with eight wins, seven pole positions and 14 podium finishes. That title means he is already qualified to race in Formula One.

"He is an extremely talented and dedicated racer, working with him is a pleasure and we can't wait to begin this adventure together," said Rene Rosin, principal of the Mercedes-powered team, in a statement on Tuesday.

"This series is not an easy one due to its learning curve for rookies, especially with the introduction of the new car, but we think that Mick has the maturity and skills needed to make it."

The young German said the move was "a logical step" on the ladder and would help him improve his skills and gain more experience.

"I can't thank the Prema family enough for what we achieved together as a team, especially this year, how we continued to develop together," he added.

The young Schumacher will be testing with Prema in Abu Dhabi later this week.

Five times world champion Lewis Hamilton said in October that he expected Schumacher to go all the way.

"There will 100 percent be a Schumacher back in Formula One, partly because of the name, but secondly because he's doing a great job," the Mercedes driver said then.&nbsp;

Saturday brought the Briton a record-extending 80th pole from 225 starts, compared to Schumacher's 68 in 307 races.

Sunday was&nbsp;Hamilton's 71st win, 20 short of the former Ferrari great's 91.

Hamilton&nbsp;has won nine races so far this season and looks likely to end the year in double figures. His 2014-17 average was 10 wins a year -- 11 in 2014, 10 in 2015 and 2016 and then nine last year.

Britain's most successful driver has 131 podium places since his debut in 2007, compared to Schumacher's 155.

Schumacher won 72 races with Ferrari between 1996 and 2006.&nbsp;Hamilton&nbsp;has won 50 with Mercedes in less than six seasons.

A more meaningful point of comparison, however, would be the years of dominance -- 2000-04 for Ferrari and 2014-18 for Mercedes.

There, the win figures are 49 for&nbsp;Hamilton&nbsp;(so far) and 48 for Schumacher but the percentage rate remains in the German's favour since there are now more races on the calendar. On podiums, Hamilton&nbsp;is ahead 77-66.

Hamilton&nbsp;has also matched or beaten Schumacher at key stages of his career, the German taking his first title with Benetton aged 25 whereas the Briton opened his account at McLaren as a 23-year-old.
