Ex-FBI chief Comey tells US senators Trump pressured him on Russia probe

The US House of Representatives Intelligence Committee will subpoena former national security adviser Michael Flynn in its probe into alleged Russian meddling in the presidential election after he declined to appear before the panel, its top Democrat said on Wednesday.

&quot;We will be following up with subpoenas, and those subpoenas will be designed to maximise our chance of getting the information that we need,&quot; Representative Adam Schiff told journalists at a breakfast sponsored by the Christian Science Monitor.

The leaders of the US&nbsp;Senate Intelligence Committee said on Tuesday they would subpoena two of Flynn&#39;s businesses after he declined to hand over documents in its separate Russia probe.

The intelligence panels want Flynn to provide information on whether there was Russian interference in the 2016 US&nbsp;election and whether there was collusion between Donald Trump&#39;s campaign and Russia. Moscow has repeatedly denied the allegations and Trump denies any collusion.

Trump&#39;s young administration has been dogged by concerns about its ties to Russia and questions over whether Trump associates may have cooperated with Russians as they sought to meddle in last year&#39;s election on Trump&#39;s behalf.

Brennan&rsquo;s confirmation of contacts between Russian officials and members of Trump&#39;s team, increased the pressure on investigators to determine whether the Trump camp colluded with the Russians.

Schiff said the House panel had invited its first group of witnesses to testify, it is obtaining documents, and assessing who will cooperate voluntarily, and who will have to be subpoenaed.

Financial Information

Schiff also said the committee was trying to obtain an audio recording of any conversation between Trump and former FBI Director James Comey, who Trump fired this month, or Comey&#39;s notes on his meeting with the president.

He declined to comment specifically on what financial information the committee was obtaining, but speaking in general terms, he noted that one tactic Russians use to influence foreign nationals is financial entanglement.

&quot;So we need to take a look at some of the financial issues to try to determine whether the Russians used money to try to entangle U.S. persons, as a way of influencing their conduct,&rdquo; Schiff said.

Financial Information Schiff also said the committee was trying to obtain an audio recording of any conversation between Trump and former FBI Director James Comey, who Trump fired this month, or Comey's notes on his meeting with the president. He declined to comment specifically on what financial information the committee was obtaining, but speaking in general terms, he noted that one tactic Russians use to influence foreign nationals is financial entanglement. "So we need to take a look at some of the financial issues to try to determine whether the Russians used money to try to entangle U.S. persons, as a way of influencing their conduct,” Schiff said. The intelligence panels are among several congressional committees looking into the allegations involving links between Russia and Trump's Nov. 8 victory. US House Intelligence Committee to subpoena Flynn

Former White House national security adviser Michael Flynn declined on Monday to comply with a subpoena from the Senate Intelligence Committee as it investigates possible Russian interference in the 2016 US election.

Flynn invoked his Fifth Amendment protection against self-incrimination, according to a letter to the Senate committee from his attorney, which was obtained by Reuters.

The retired lieutenant general is a key witness in the Russia probe.

Flynn`s attorneys did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

Senators Richard Burr and Mark Warner, the top Republican and Democrat on the panel, said in a statement they were disappointed by Flynn`s decision, but would &quot;vigorously pursue&quot; his testimony.

The committee is conducting one of the main congressional probes into US intelligence agency reports of Russian meddling in the election and whether there was any collusion between President Donald Trump&rsquo;s campaign and Russia. Moscow has repeatedly denied the allegations and Trump denies any collusion between his campaign and Russian officials.

Flynn apparently misled Pentagon investigators about his foreign connections when he sought to renew his security clearance in early 2016, according to a document obtained by congressional Democrats and released in part on Monday.

Flynn, interviewed as part of the clearance renewal process, said that all of his foreign trips as a private citizen &quot;were funded by U.S. companies,&quot; according to excerpts of a March 14, 2016 report compiled by security clearance investigators.

In fact, a trip Flynn made to Moscow in December 2015, where he attended a gala dinner and sat next to Russian President Vladimir Putin, was paid for by Russia Today, which U.S. officials consider a state-run propaganda arm, according to documents previously released by the House Oversight Committee.

The document is the latest to shed light on how Flynn received a security clearance and was subsequently hired as Trump`s national security advisor. He was forced to resign from the job in February after less than a month for failing to disclose the content of his talks with Sergei Kislyak, Russia`s ambassador to the United States, and then misleading Vice President Mike Pence about the conversations.

Excerpts were released by Rep. Elijah Cummings, ranking Democrat on the House committee.

Flynn`s decision to decline to comply with the Senate Intelligence Committee subpoena was first reported by the Associated Press.

The Senate committee first requested documents from Flynn in an April 28 letter, but he declined to cooperate with the request. Then it issued a subpoena.

In response, his attorney wrote to the committee that &quot;the context in which the Committee has called for General Flynn&rsquo;s testimonial production of documents makes clear that he has more than a reasonable apprehension that any testimony he provides could be used against him.&quot;

Flynn&rsquo;s legal team said that he was rejecting the subpoena because the committee spurned his offer, made by the retired Army general in a May 8 letter, &quot;to give a full account of the facts and to answer the committee&rsquo;s questions, should the circumstances permit, including assurances against unfair prosecution. We stated that, absent such assurances, General Flynn would respectfully decline your request for an interview and for production of documents.&quot;

It was not clear what the committee would do if Flynn decided not to comply.

On Monday, Senator James Lankford, a Republican member of the intelligence panel, said on Twitter that Flynn was within his rights to invoke the Fifth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

&ldquo;We will get to the truth one way or another,&rdquo; Lankford said on Twitter. &ldquo;We need facts, not speculation &amp; anonymous sources.&rdquo; 
Congress has the constitutional authority to enforce a subpoena.

A Congressional Research Service report outlined three main options: seeking criminal prosecution through the executive branch, asking the courts for a civil judgement and using a dormant power of &quot;inherent contempt&quot; to detain and imprison an individual.

The latter option has not been used in 75 years, the report said, with Congress more often relying on the criminal contempt statute recently.

US intelligence agencies concluded in January that Moscow tried to sway the November vote in Trump`s favour. Russia has denied involvement, and Trump denies any collusion between his campaign and Russia.

Reuters reported on Thursday that Flynn and other advisers to Trump&rsquo;s campaign were in contact with Russian officials and others with Kremlin ties in at least 18 calls and emails during the last seven months of the US presidential race.

Two other former Trump associates - one-time campaign chairman Paul Manafort and Republican operative Roger Stone - have turned over documents the Senate panel had requested, while a third - campaign adviser Carter Page - had not yet complied, NBC News reported, citing a congressional source.

Flynn has acknowledged being a paid consultant to the Turkish government during the campaign.

FBI director confirms agency is probing Russian links to Trump campaign

The Republican chairman of a US congressional committee on intelligence said on Sunday that he has seen &nbsp;&quot;no evidence&quot; that President Donald Trump&#39;s campaign colluded with Russia during the run up to the 2016 elections.

Based on &quot;everything I have up to this morning -- no evidence of collusion,&quot; said US Representative Devin Nunes, head of the House Intelligence Committee, speaking to Fox News on a television program on Sunday.

Nunes also said the panel would investigate the intelligence leak of the probe on former national security adviser Michael Flynn&#39;s ties to Russia.

Nunes, however, said the leak involving Michael Flynn was a crime and that the panel was probing whether other names were leaked.

&quot;The one crime we know that&#39;s been committed is that one: the leaking of someone&#39;s name ...,&quot; Representative Devin Nunes, chairman of the House of Representatives Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, told Fox News Sunday.

Trump fired Flynn from the post of his former national security adviser&nbsp;last month after he failed to disclose that he met Russia&#39;s ambassador before Trump took charge on January 20.

It has now come to light that Trump&#39;s son-in-law and adviser Jared Kushner was also part of that meeting. &nbsp;

The meeting in December came at a crucial time when then President Barack Obama was preparing to sanction Russia and publicly make the case that Moscow had interfered with the 2016 election, the New York Times report said.

It added that the incoming Trump administration was simultaneously striking a conciliatory pose toward Moscow in a series of meetings and phone calls involving the Russian ambassador.

Flynn was fired from the post of national security advisor by Trump for misleading officials about the nature of his telecommunications with Russian diplomats.

In January, when questioned about Flynn&rsquo;s contacts with Kislyak, the White House said that there had been only a text message and a phone call between the men at the end of December and the communications happened before the US sanctions. This was quickly contradicted by news reports.&nbsp;

Flynn later changed his story, and the White House acknowledged the two men had discussed the sanctions and ways of resolving the hostilities between the two countries -- which reached a new high after news of Russia meddling in the US elections -- once Trump was in office.

Flynn&#39;s to fully disclose the nature of the calls with Kislyak ultimately cost him his job and he was asked to resign by Trump.

The contacts raise questions about the White House&#39;s statements that it knew of no further contacts with Russian officials beyond those by Flynn.

US Attorney General Jeff Sessions is also in the centre of a storm after the Washington Post reported on Wednesday that he met with the Russian ambassador in July and September just as accusations of Russian interference in the election were mounting.&nbsp;
