<p>The 'mermaid' was discovered in a dried-up riverbed in the southern hemisphere of the planet called Terra Sirenum, which is the Latin for 'Sea of the Sirens'.</p>

<p>"A purplish, scaly wave lures the attention of a European spacecraft as it flies over," said ESA, in a&nbsp;statement&nbsp;along with the image.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"It is just an optical illusion – there are no mythological mermaids or seas on the Martian world today," the space agency stated.</p>

<p>The scientists, with the help of the Color and Stereo Surface Imaging System (CaSSIS) of the orbiter, found that the purple anomaly was chloride salt deposits.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The CaSSIS is a high-resolution camera which can capture colour stereo images of the surface features of Mars.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Stereo imaging captures different images of the same surface feature from various angles and helps the software analyse the parallax effect as well as create a detailed 3D model of the terrain.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This helps scientists carry out detailed studies of the topography of the Red Planet and its geological processes&nbsp;from afar.</p>

<h2><strong>How are these purple waves formed on the Red Planet?</strong></h2>

<p>The scientists identified the chlorine-rich minerals as the source of these purple waves.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The chloride deposits create a purple hue in the colour-infrared images of the TGO which makes CaSSIS a unique tool for studying the distribution of&nbsp;salts across the planet.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Such deposits also indicate that once water was present in abundance on Mars. However, because of the lack of a magnetic field on the planet, the atmosphere&nbsp;on Mars slowly got eroded away and carried most of its water with it.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Another researcher called this a potential dugong.</p>

<p>Erich Hoyt from Whale and Dolphin Conservation in the UK does not discount the possibility of the globster being a dugong, also known as a sea cow, but he is confident that the creature has been dead for several weeks.</p>

<p>Marine biologist Gregory Skomal made an anatomical discovery, ruling out his initial suspicion of a large shark.</p>

<p>The mummified object, which appears to have nails and teeth, hair on head and scales on its lower body, has been sent for a CT scan at the veterinary hospital of Kurashiki University of Science and the Arts.</p>

<p>Japan’s&nbsp;Asahi Shimbun newspaper said that mummy was found preserved in a box along with a note claiming the that it had been caught in a fishing net in the Pacific Ocean at some point between 1736 and 1741.</p>

<p>The “dried mermaid” was said to have been kept by a family and then passed to another before it was eventually acquired by a temple, which put it on display some four decades ago.</p>

<p>It is also being claimed that the object may have been produced as an item for export to Europe.</p>

<p>Hiroshi Kinoshita, of the Okayama Folklore Society, found the object while studying Kiyoaki Sato, a Japanese natural historian who researched mysterious creatures.</p>

<p>He said the creature could have religious significance.</p>

<p>“Japanese mermaids have a legend of immortality. It is said that if you eat the flesh of a mermaid, you will never die,” New York Post quoted Kinoshita as saying.</p>

<p>“There is a legend in many parts of Japan that a woman accidentally ate the flesh of a mermaid and lived for 800 years.”</p>

<p>He claimed that some people believed in the legend and used to eat the scales of mermaid mummies.”</p>

<p>The scientists who are examining the mummy will publish their findings later this year.</p>
