<p>During the exchange of fire, one security personnel identified as Wangkhem Somorjit, a member of the IRB (Indian Reserve Battalion) associated with the state police commando in Moreh was shot and later succumbed to injuries.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A second commando, named&nbsp;Takhellambam Saileshwore,&nbsp;died late Wednesday,&nbsp;according to a report by the news agency PTI, citing sources.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>The encounter&nbsp;lasted about an hour. The police also said that the militants fired RPG shells at the temporary commando post damaging several vehicles parked in the vicinity.</p>

<h2><strong>Two suspected of killing police officer arrested</strong></h2>

<p>This comes two days after the police arrested two people suspected of killing a police officer in the border town.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The suspects, identified as Phillip Khongsai and Hemokholal Mate, also reportedly possessed a pistol containing two live rounds, a Chinese hand grenade, 10&nbsp;live AK ammunition rounds, and 10&nbsp;detonators, all of which were confiscated, said the police.</p>

<p>The duo have been accused of killing Senior Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Chingtham Anand in October last year. The two had allegedly fired at security personnel vehicles after which the police chased and overpowered them.</p>

<p>The duo was later presented before the judicial magistrate in Moreh and was remanded to nine days' police custody, police said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to a report by PTI, Moreh-based civil bodies including Kuki Inpi Tengnoupal had vehemently condemned the arrest and demanded unconditional release of the two within 24 hours warning of serious repercussions.</p>

<h2><strong>Total curfew imposed</strong></h2>

<p>The Manipur government has imposed a total curfew starting 12:00 am (local time) on January 16 amid fears of “likelihood of breach of peace, disturbance of public tranquility and grave danger to human lives and property within the revenue jurisdiction of Tengnoupal”.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We couldn't prevent the incident as the mob was overwhelming and we couldn't control the situation. They threw petrol bombs from all directions - from the bylane behind the building and from the front entrance -&nbsp;so we simply couldn't control the mob," L Dineshwor Singh, Escort Commander, said.</p>

<p>Commenting on the violence, Singh said it was 'unfortunate' that such incidents&nbsp;were taking place in his home state.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I am currently in Kerala for official work. Thankfully, nobody got injured last night at my Imphal home. The miscreants came with petrol bombs and damage has been done to the ground floor and first floor of my home," Singh was quoted as saying by ANI.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"It is very sad to see what is happening in my home state.&nbsp;I will still continue to appeal for peace. Those indulging in this kind of violence are absolutely inhuman."</p>

<p>Notably, this was the second instance when the minister's home was targetted by the rioters, according to <em>The New Indian Express</em>. In May, a similar attack was thwarted when the security personnel fired in the air to disperse the mob. The attack followed a recent meeting, chaired by Singh, with&nbsp;a group of intellectuals from&nbsp;Meitei and Kuki communities to discuss how to bring peace to the violence-hit northeast state.</p>

Manipur violence: Union ministers' house set on fire by arsonists

<p>At least nine people were killed and 10 injured after a fresh militant attack in India’s restive northeastern state of Manipur, which is witnessing ethnic clashes.</p>

<p>Police said that the militants struck a village in the Khamenlok area around 1 am. They were carrying sophisticated weapons.</p>

<p>The attack took place on Monday night. The assailants surrounded the village and shortly after, a gunfight took place between them and village volunteers, PTI news agency reported.</p>

<p>Notably, another fire exchange occurred between the security forces and Kuki militants at Phougakchao Ikhai in the Bishnupur district on Tuesday.</p>

<p>The Kuki militants were trying to make bunkers close to Meitei localities when they were challenged by security forces resulting in the exchange of fire.</p>

<h2><strong>Curfew timings extended</strong></h2>

<p>In the wake of the volatile station, the district authorities have cut short the curfew relaxation hours from the usual 5 am to 6 pm in Imphal East and Imphal West to 5 am to 9 am. Curfew remains in force in 11 of the 16 districts of Manipur, while internet services are suspended in the entire northeastern state.</p>

<p>So far, more than 100 people have lost their lives and 310 others were injured in the ethnic violence between Meitei and Kuki community people in Manipur that broke out a month ago.</p>

<p>Clashes first broke out on May 3 after a 'Tribal Solidarity March' was organised in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.</p>

Notably, another fire exchange occurred between the security forces and Kuki militants at Phougakchao Ikhai in the Bishnupur district on Tuesday. The Kuki militants were trying to make bunkers close to Meitei localities when they were challenged by security forces resulting in the exchange of fire. Curfew timings extended In the wake of the volatile station, the district authorities have cut short the curfew relaxation hours from the usual 5 am to 6 pm in Imphal East and Imphal West to 5 am to 9 am. Curfew remains in force in 11 of the 16 districts of Manipur, while internet services are suspended in the entire northeastern state. Led by former Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court, Ajai Lamba, the panel aims to investigate the ongoing clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities in the state. Moreover, this election sees IromSharmilaChanu&rsquo;s electoral debut. After giving up her sixteen years long fast, Irom entered the electoral fray to politically fight against AFSPA. She intends to do this through democratic means, particularly by forming a new political party, People&rsquo;s Resurgence and Justice Alliance (PRJA). <p>The undisclosed Naga Peace Agreement, which was signed by the Central Government and the NSCN(IM) leaders in 2015 has become a contentious issue in this election. While BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, assure that the interest of Manipur will not be hurt, Congress leaders press for the Agreement to be made public. The UNC had welcomed the signing of the Peace Accord as a positive sign. The NPF, which is in power along with the BJP as a coalition partner in Nagaland, and has the support of UNC in Manipur, may favour the latter in the government formation.&nbsp;</p>

Kuki National Army (KNA), the armed wing of Kuki National Organisation, although involved in underground activities, has taken part in voting this time like they did in the 2012 elections. Frequent Kuki-Naga conflict in the past not only creates socio-political tension but also impacts electoral verdicts.</p>
