Half-centuries by Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Jaker Ali helped Bangladesh take an&nbsp;81-run lead over South Africa before bad light brought an early finish to day three of the first Test on Wednesday.

The hosts were 283-7 in Mirpur when the umpires called stumps about an hour before the scheduled finish, with Mehidy batting on 87 and Nayeem Hasan on 16.&nbsp;

Bangladesh spin bowling coach Mushtaq Ahmed said he believed his side could still snatch its first ever Test win against the visitors.&nbsp;

"We have to bat as long as we can, score consistently, and get whatever lead we can," he said.&nbsp;

"When we can start believing, we can come back and we fight," he added. "When you don't give up, the opposition also respects you."

South Africa only bowled five overs in the last session, and fewer than 58 overs were played through the day after a rain interruption cut the second session short.&nbsp;

Mehidy and debutant Jaker added 138 runs for the seventh wicket to save Bangladesh from an innings defeat after they resumed at 101-3, chasing down South Africa's 202-run first-innings lead.&nbsp;

Jaker was eventually trapped lbw by left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj for 58.&nbsp;

"Obviously Bangladesh has done really well today. Conditions got a little bit better, if I'm honest, with a slightly used ball," Maharaj said.&nbsp;

"But I think we're still ahead," he added. "Bangladesh have a lead and we've got three wickets more to go. We can restrict them as much as possible, but I still feel we'll be in the bouncing seat."

In the morning, South African pace bowler Kagiso Rabada took advantage of overcast conditions to take two wickets in three balls in&nbsp;the fifth over.&nbsp;

South Africa scored 308 in their first innings, powered by Verreynne's second Test century, in reply to Bangladesh's 106 all out on the first day.

On the first ball of the 24th over, an away going delivery from Mohammed Siraj saw Hasan flick the ball towards the fine leg. However, the ball did not travel much and went fine in the direction of the wicketkeeper Rahul. The stumper had pulled off a stunner with a low left-hand catch, as he dived to his left. He caught the ball single-handedly to produce a catch of the tournament moment. Hasan would be dismissed for 3 off 13 while Siraj enjoyed his first wicket of the day.

Earlier in the match India had a big injury scare as star all-rounder Hardik Panyda got injured in his first over. He had an awkward fall that resulted in him damaging his ankle and was unable to complete his over. As a consequence, former India skipper Virat Kohli had to be called in to complete the over. This reminded me of the 2003 World Cup when Ashish Nehra got injured while bowling against Namibia.

Pandya was later taken for scans and did not participate in the rest of the Bangladesh batting innings. At the time of writing Bangladesh were 170/4 in 36 overs. Mehidy Hasan Miraz was the architect of Bangladesh’s win as he scored 57 runs from 73 deliveries, stitching a 97-run partnership with Najmul Shanto for the third wicket. He was also a handful with the ball having scalped three wickets to showcase his all-round ability. Bangladesh initially restricted Afghanistan to 156 in 37.2 overs where skipper Shakib also notched three wickets. Rahmanullah Gurbaz was the top scorer for Afghanistan with 47 runs with only four other players getting into double figures.

Asked to chase 157, Bangladesh did not have the best start as they lost Tanzid Hasan (5) and Litton Das (13) early but Mehidy Hasan and Najmul Shanto (59) laid the foundation for an easy win. The win was Bangladesh’s third on Indian soil, the first since 2006 when they beat Zimbabwe by 101 runs in a triangular series.

Bangladesh will next take on defending champions England on Tuesday (Oct 10) at the same venue in Dharamsala. Bangladesh will look to repeat the heroics of 2015 when they got the better of England in the league stage contest. England will look to bounce back from their opening-day defeat to New Zealand, where they were beaten comprehensively by nine wickets.

Captain Hashmatullah Shahidi contributed with some runs before Bangladeshi bowlers broke their backbone with swift strikes. Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan and all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz were the protagonists in bowling, picking six wickets. Both returned with three wickets each.

From 112 for three at one stage, Afghanistan’s batting tumbled', as their innings got wrapped up on a mere 156. Besides veteran Mahmudullah, each bowler picked a wicket as Bangladesh made light work of their Asian counterparts.

Following an exciting start, Bangladesh lost two wickets inside 11 overs, with Mehidy Hasan still at the crease. Alongside Najmul Hossain Shanto, the pair stitched a 213-run stand – the highest for any wicket for Bangladesh in the Asia Cup. In the meantime, both completed their respective second ODI tons.

While Mehidy retired hurt on an unbeaten 112 off 119 balls, including three sixes and seven fours, Shanto, who also impressed during the Sri Lanka outing, scored an almost run-a-ball 104, hitting nine boundaries and two massive sixes.

The upbeat Afghanistan side lost star opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz on just one inside the second over. That wicket, however, didn’t hurt their hunger for the chase as Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmat Shah held their nerves and got the innings moving for the Afghans.

Following Rahmat Shah’s wicket, skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi and Zadran kept their team in the chase with some clean and impressive stroke play. Zadran, who completed his fifty and looked confident of converting it into a three-digit score, got out 75. Najibullah Zadran departed early, while Hashmatullah lost his wicket soon after completing his fifty.

Wickets continued to fall as Bangladesh inched closer to their first win of Asia Cup 2023.

Star all-rounder Rashid Khan stood tall as he smashed a few boundaries to keep everyone on their toes. He didn’t look like letting the match go without a fight as he took the attack to the bowlers.&nbsp;
