<p>A team of reserachers at the University of Hong Kong has claimed they have devised a novel, first-in-the-world treatment that prolongs the life of a late-stage liver cancer patient. The researchers said the new treatment reduces the tumour to a state suitable for a transplant.</p>

<p>The 'miracle' treatment uses a combination of stereotactic body radiation therapy – a targeted tumour treatment – and immunotherapy to mitigate the tumour by reverting it back to stage one.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Professor Albert Chan Chi-yan, the co-lead of the research team at the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine said his colleagues had cured a 65-year-old patient of stage-four liver cancer by first shrinking the tumour using a “reduce and remove” treatment they had developed.</p>

<p>“There is actually no other effective treatment to shrink any stage-four cancer to stage one at the moment. The recovery of the patient is encouraging," said Albert.</p>

<p>"The team is honoured to provide new hope and possibilities for the treatment of liver cancer," he added.</p>

<p>Notably, the patient named Wong Lok-wing was given only about six months to live in November last year. He had a tumour that measured 18.2 centimetres in diameter and had spread across to his main portal vein which transports blood to the liver.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>Against all hope, the researchers used their "reduce and remove" treatment as a last-ditch effort which brought the desired results. After the cancerous tumour's size was reduced, Wong, during a 12-hour operation in August this year, received a portion of liver provided by his son, Nathan. Since then, Wong has remained cancer-free.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Albert said his team was further developing their treatment by exploring additional immunotherapy. He added that the team hopes of raising the rate of patient response to the treatment to 80 per cent, up from 50 to 60 per cent.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“We have confidence that we can continue this treatment, and our future direction is how we can enhance the efficacy of this regime so that more patients can benefit,” Chan said.</p>

<p>Sarang Menon and Adithi had been running from pillar to post to secure funds for the treatment of their child, named Nirvaan, suffering from Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Type 2, a rare genetic neuromuscular disease.&nbsp;</p>

<p>They received the devastating diagnosis from the doctors last month during a routine&nbsp;Electromyography (EMG) test.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"At 14th month, Nirvaan got diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder - spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) Type 2. Our world was shattered and turned upside down, as this is a life-alternating disorder that takes away the ability to walk, eat or breathe and significantly shortens the lifespan," the couple informed.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The problems were compounded when they came to know that the medicine required for Nirvaan's treatment cost a whopping $2.1 million per dose.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A single dose of Zolgensma, manufactured by Novartis Gene Therapies is known as the world's costliest drug, according to UK’s National Health Service (NHS). It takes nearly 20 days to reach India, once the order is placed.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Ït is heartwarming to know that there are till angels in the world who selflessly come forward to help others in need," they wrote thanking the anonymous angel.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Upon his return, the minister tweeted, "Delighted to be back home".</p>

<p>Jaitley, who is currently without a portfolio, had last month flown to New York for the treatment after being reportedly diagnosed with soft tissue cancer which required surgery.</p>

<p>In his absence, the responsibility of the Finance Ministry was given to Union Minister Piyush Goyal who also presented the Interim Budget this year.</p>

<p>Although Jaitley was away from India in the past few weeks, he has remained active on Twitter and was regular with his blog posts. He also met reporters through a video call from New York and gave interviews on Budget.</p>

<p>Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar who returned to Goa on Thursday after three months of medical treatment in US said "It feels nice to be back".</p>

<p>Parrikar, 62, was undergoing a treatment for the pancreatic ailment in US since March.</p>

<p>He was initially admitted to the Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai on February 15 after getting diagnosed with the ailment.</p>

<p>He was discharged on February 22 and returned to Goa on the same day where the chief minister presented the Goa Budget.</p>

<p>The session, however, remained short to only four days because of his illness.</p>

<p>The chief minister was then admitted to the Goa Medical College and Hospital on February 25 after he complained of dehydration.</p>

<p>He was eventually referred to the USA after he went to Mumbai on March 5 for the second time.</p>

<p>Before leaving Goa, Parrikar had formed a cabinet advisory committee to guide the state administration on governance and other issues, in his absence.</p>

<p>He had been monitoring the affairs of the state from the US.&nbsp;</p>

Goa CM returns from US after 3 months medical treatment, says, 'It feels nice to be back'

<p>Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Monday said he would travel abroad for curing his medical ailment.</p>

<p>In a video message, Parrikar stated that he would travel abroad, depending on the advice given to him by the doctors here, and also thanked the natives of his state for their good wishes at his time of recovery.</p>

<p>&quot;I want to thank all Goans for your prayers in the last 15 days. Because of your blessings, I have recovered and I am heading for Mumbai. Depending on what the doctors advise me, I may be going abroad for a few days to cure my ailment. I hope your blessings will continue and that you will allow me to take a few days off for completely curing myself,&quot; he said.</p>

<p>On February 15, Parrikar was rushed to the Lilavati Hospital where, according to the CMO, he was diagnosed with &ldquo;mild pancreatitis.&rdquo;</p>

<p>Sources close to Parrikar indicated on Monday that his family is already in touch with a health facility in the United States, where he will proceed to, after a brief spell of treatment in Mumbai&#39;s Lilavati Hospital.</p>

<p>Bangladeshi nationals who flock to India in search of medical facilities were left stranded in India&#39;s eastern state of West Bengal following the demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes by the Indian government.</p>

<p>For Saima Sharmin, who got Indian currency notes in exchange for Bangladeshi taka at the border checkpost, the journey ahead was difficult. Sharmin was here for her chemo therapy at a private hospital in state capital&nbsp;Kolkata. But, she had to return home without any treatment since the Tata Cancer Hospital refused to provide her treatment in exchange for the old currency notes she had.</p>

<p>&ldquo;I am suffering from cancer. Since&nbsp;we do not get good medical facilities in Bangladesh, we come to India&rsquo;s Bengal. I am in urgent need of the chemo therapy. My chances of survival depend on the treatment that I receive periodically,&rdquo; she told WION.</p>

<p>&ldquo;The hospital is demanding Rs 100 currency notes but I could only exchange Bangladesh&rsquo;s currency for Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes. I have to return home without being treated,&quot; she added.</p>

<p>Like Sharmin, several Bangladeshi nationals had to either return home or look for other options to avail treatment.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While the Indian government has asked hospitals to accept the old Rs.500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes, only government-run hospitals are doing so. Private hospitals and nursing homes are turning down patients who cannot pay for the treatment in denomination of Rs 100 or lower.</p>

<p>While Bangladesh ramps up its own healthcare infrastructure, most patients from across the border come to India in search of not just intensive medical procedures but routine checkups too.</p>

<p>&ldquo;Most private hospitals in the southern fringes of Kolkata get approximately 5 to 10 per cent&nbsp;of its revenue&nbsp;from medical tourism. This demonetisation of currency notes is not only affecting the patients&nbsp;but also the economy rendered by cross-border medical tourism,&rdquo; said a doctor requesting anonymity.</p>
