Max Verstappen claimed his first win of 2026 in a chaotic, storm-delayed F1 race at Sepang, leading Kimi Antonelli and Lewis Hamilton to victory.

Four-time world champion Max Verstappen secured his and Red Bull's first win this year with an imperious drive on Sunday (Oct 4) in chaotic conditions in a storm-delayed Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia. Nine years after winning the last F1 race at the Sepang International Circuit, the 29-year-old Dutchman came through a wild afternoon of accidents and incidents for his 72nd victory and first since Abu Dhabi last year. In a race of shifting tyre strategies, he came home 2.307 seconds ahead of championship leader Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes and seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton who took third after a thrilling recovery drive. His Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc was fourth, having fallen to last place in the early laps, ahead of Isack Hadjar in the second Red Bull, McLaren's Oscar Piastri and the Racing Bull of Liam Lawson. Hamilton, on soft slicks, had no grip and tumbled down the order from second on the grid as it became clear that the conditions remained treacherous. It all changed on lap nine when Valtteri Bottas slid off into the gravel and the safety car was deployed, bringing nearly everyone in for dry tyres with Antonelli taking mediums and Verstappen softs. Hamilton stayed out and upon the resumption Verstappen pounced to sweep round Antonelli and regain a lead he would not relinquish. Hamilton continued his recovery, slicing through the field and by lap 23 had dispensed with Lawson to take fifth. He closed up within six seconds of the Frenchman before the pair pitted on lap 31.
For three of India’s biggest gaming and content creators, racing against four-time Formula 1 World Champion Max Verstappen at Silverstone was an experience far removed from the virtual world. For the Indian trio, however, sharing the track with Verstappen proved to be the biggest takeaway.

Techno Gamerz, who finished 39th in Kart No. 72, said moving from gaming to real-life racing was a completely different experience. “It was completely different. In gaming, you’re used to making quick decisions and staying calm when there’s a lot happening on screen, but here everything was real – the speed, the traffic, the contact and the physical side of driving the kart.

“Once the race started, that competitive instinct kicked in. I was thinking about how to survive the traffic, where I could find space and how I could move forward. And then you remember that Max Verstappen is coming through the field behind you! “Honestly, it was an experience I couldn’t even have imagined. This wasn’t even a dream of mine, because I never thought I’d get an opportunity like this.”

For Techno, the most memorable moment came after Verstappen caught him. “Definitely getting to race with Max,” he said. “After he caught me, there was a yellow flag and I ended up driving with him for more than half a lap. Max’s kart was literally just ahead of mine and I was thinking, ‘This is crazy.’ “I feel like I got a little taste of what the other drivers must feel when Max overtakes them! Of course, all three of us from India finishing inside the top 40 made us really proud, but actually sharing a track with Max is something I’ll remember for a very long time.”

Shreeman Legend, the highest-finishing Indian in 32nd place, knew Verstappen would eventually come hunting through the field.

“The first priority was to stay out of trouble. With 100 karts around you, there was so much happening that you couldn’t spend the whole race looking behind and worrying about where Max was,” Shreeman said.

“I actually kept checking behind me and for a while I couldn’t see him, so I thought maybe we were safe! My approach was to stay on the road, avoid the chaos and make as few mistakes as possible. “But Max was finding gaps and using parts of the circuit that the more experienced karters understood much better than we did. By the time I realised where he was, he had already found his way through.”

Formula 1 has agreed to tweak the changes brought into the ongoing season after several drivers, including four-time champion Max Verstappen, raised concerns. The new rule changes are expected to be formalised in before the next round in Miami on May 3. The F1 management, which includes team principals and their chief executives, the power unit manufacturers and F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali, agreed to the rule changes on Monday (Apr 20) after multiple rounds of talks following last round in Japan. The rule tweaks address the most important of drivers' concern regarding the 50-50 power split between the electrical energy and internal combustion engine.
