OpenAI says its AI has achieved a breakthrough that mathematicians have spent nearly 90 years chasing. The company has published what it describes as an AI-generated solution to the Navier-Stokes existence and smoothness problem, one of the seven Millennium Prize Problems. The claimed solution was produced in about 88 hours using around 10,000 coordinating AI agents. OpenAI says the agents developed an analytical proof and a formal version in Lean, while another AI system helped verify the formalisation. But this is not yet the same as mathematics officially declaring the problem solved.

We’re sharing a solution to the Navier-Stokes Millennium Prize Problem, one of the deepest problems at the frontier of mathematics.
What is the Navier-Stokes problem?
The Navier-Stokes equations describe how fluids such as water and air move. The famous problem asks whether smooth three-dimensional fluid motion can remain mathematically well behaved, or whether it can develop a singularity where the solution breaks down. The Clay Mathematics Institute selected it as one of seven Millennium Prize Problems in 2000. Each carries a $1 million prize for an accepted solution. OpenAI says its proof shows that a fluid can develop a singularity in finite time, using a vortex that becomes increasingly elongated as it spirals inward.
10,000 AI agents worked together
The scale of the experiment is almost as striking as the claimed result. OpenAI says its agents sent 2.7 million messages and generated around 130 billion output tokens while working on Navier-Stokes.Across all the mathematical problems attempted, the figures reached 4.9 million messages and about 300 billion output tokens. The Navier-Stokes result itself took about 88 hours, followed by another 17 hours of Lean formalisation and verification using GPT-6 Astra. This was not simply a chatbot answering a difficult maths question. It was a large-scale AI research effort in which thousands of agents explored different approaches and researchers helped transfer useful ideas between groups.
Why mathematicians are still cautious
OpenAI's announcement is significant, but the proof still needs serious scrutiny. The mathematics community must determine whether the argument fully satisfies the exact Millennium Prize problem, rather than proving a related statement. There is also a dispute over research credit. Mathematicians Tristan Buckmaster and Levent Alpöge have questioned whether OpenAI's work overlaps with related research they had been pursuing. OpenAI says its solution was developed independently and denies improperly using their work. For now, the safest description is therefore an extraordinary AI-generated proposed solution awaiting wider mathematical validation. If it survives that scrutiny, however, it could mark a major shift in what AI systems are capable of discovering moving from solving problems humans already understand to helping tackle mathematical questions that have resisted generations of researchers.

OpenAI says an unreleased AI system produced a solution to the 90-year-old Navier-Stokes problem in 88 hours using around 10,000 AI agents.

American mathematician Joshua Zahl, who recently solved a 100-year-old math problem, has packed his bags and is set to leave Canada’s University of British Columbia (UBC). His breakthrough in the three-dimensional Kakeya conjecture attracted attention worldwide, and universities across the world started vying to get him on board. In the United States, test scores released on Wednesday from the National Assessment of Educational Progress showed that Math and reading skills among 13-year-olds in the nation hit their lowest level in decades, New York Times reported. The last time, the math scores of the gold-standard federal exam were this low for 13-year-olds was in 1990. In reading, 2004.

US: Sharp decline in basic reading, math skills among 13-year-olds

Cutting edge, Artificial Intelligence is still pushing the boundaries of human mathematical capabilities. As the field of AI continues to advance, experts are now dwelling on one question - will machines replace mathematicians?

Will Artificial Intelligence change Mathematics? Will machine conquer the numbers?

In announcing a review of the subject in England, Rishi Sunak claimed that a "anti-maths mindset" is stifling the economy. The "core maths content" taught in schools will be examined by a group of experts, comprising mathematicians and business leaders. It will also take into account whether a new mathematical credential is required. Opposition parties, however, criticised the government's track record of hiring maths instructors.

Rishi Sunak's plan to make maths compulsory in UK schools

The United Kingdom Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak expected to continue his bid to make maths education compulsory until 18, as he believes that Britain possesses an inherent “anti-maths mindset” which is costing the country. In an upcoming speech, the excerpts of which were released by 10 Downing Street, Sunak, on Monday (April 17) might argue that failure to consider numeracy as a basic skill like reading is costing the UK economy huge sums.

Sunak’s upcoming speech in north London

“We’ve got to change this anti-maths mindset. We’ve got to start prizing numeracy for what it is – a key skill every bit as essential as reading,” the UK PM is to say, as per his speech briefed in advance by Downing Street, reported the Guardian.

It added, “I won’t sit back and allow this cultural sense that it’s OK to be bad at maths to put our children at a disadvantage.” Sunak is to pitch his campaign to “transform” UK’s supposed national approach to the subject saying that it is not some “nice to have” and change how Britain values maths.

The UK PM is also expected to cite statistics showing that Britain is below average for numeracy among industrialised countries as more than eight million adults reportedly have maths skills below those expected in schools for a child aged nine.

“If we are going to grow the economy not just over the next two years, but the next 20, we simply cannot allow poor numeracy to cost our economy tens of billions a year or to leave people twice as likely to be unemployed as those with competent numeracy,” Sunak is expected to say.

The UK PM will also say that this change will not be delivered overnight and how they “need to recruit and train the maths teachers.”

UK government’s previous response to the issue

This comes months after the British government had pledged to set up an advisory committee to determine if they should make maths compulsory from the current minimum of 16 to 18. The group would include mathematicians, education experts and business representatives to advise on the numeracy content needed.

However, critics, some of which are from the opposition parties have called the promise meaningless saying that the incumbent Tory government does not have a plan or the means including money to recruit and train more maths teachers to implement their mandates.

“Once again, the prime minister needs to show his working: he cannot deliver this reheated, empty pledge without more maths teachers,” said UK’s Shadow Education Secretary, Bridget Phillipson, as per the Guardian.

She added that the Tory government has failed UK’s children for 13 years and “repeatedly misses their target for new maths teachers, with maths attainment gaps widening and existing teachers leaving in their droves.”

The concerned person then again on March 26 sent a courier to the Rouse Avenue office of the CBSE.

In the courier, answers of the Class XII Economics question paper were written on four pages.

Apart from it, mobile numbers of four persons were also mentioned who allegedly received these question papers on the WhatsApp groups.

On March 28, the CBSE chairperson received an email at 1:39 am with an attachment of 12 pages in which questions and answers of class X were written.

The mail also appealed to the CBSE to cancel the exams.

However, the examination board did not cancel the exams.

The First Information Report (FIR) was lodged in this regard on March 28 evening.

Till now, the police have come to know that the CBSE question papers were leaked on 10 WhatsApp groups.
