Brazilian soccer icon Edson Arantes do Nascimento, better known as Pele, said in an interview that Argentina's Diego Maradona was better on the pitch than his own countryman Lionel Messi and criticized Neymar.

"It's difficult to defend Neymar for all the things he does outside of soccer. I talked with him, I told him that in soccer, he's got it. He had bad luck because the team didn't win the World Cup and he was branded," Pele told the daily Folha de Sao Paulo.

"I was with him twice in Europe. We talked and I told him: 'In soccer, God gave you a gift, but what you did is what made it difficult,'" Pele added.

The Brazilian star, however, said that Neymar is a "better player" than Frenchman Kylian Mbappe, his colleague on Paris Saint-Germain and who this year won the World Cup in Russia with the French national team.

"I think that Neymar is a better player than he is, but in Europe everyone talks more about Mbappe," he said.

In the interview, Pele ranked Barcelona star Lionel Messi beneath Maradona, with whom he said he has a "perfect" relationship after some misunderstandings that the pair dealt with in recent years.

"As far as I'm concerned, Maradona was one of the best players ever. If you ask me, 'Was he better than Messi?' Yes, he was. Much better. Beckenbauer, Cruyff are also better. They're also excellent players," he emphasized.

The 78-year-old soccer legend also spoke about his own health, saying that he is "100 percent" after undergoing three surgeries in recent years.

"I don't feel any more pain, but I feel some weakness. I had some good legs and look how they are now," said Pele - who played for Brazil when they won the World Cup in 1958, 1962 and 1970 - with some irony.

The mathematical formula to 'bend it like Beckham'. (Others)

Four physics students found that the distance a ball bends as a result of the 'Magnus effect'.

In this scenario the air travels faster on the left-hand side of the ball because it is travelling in the same direction as the ball spins – it is dragged along by the ball. On the right-hand side, the ball is spinning against the direction of air flow and so the air travels slower over that part of the ball.

If the velocity of a fluid increases then a drop in pressure results. This means, air pressure drops on the left-hand side of the ball and increases on the right. The pressure difference creates a force acting away from the area of high pressure than the ball moves to the left.

This phenomenon is responsible for the spinning of the ball and its curving arc as it travels through the air.

That phenomenon is depended on the above-mentioned formula. Where in the formula, R= Radius of the ball, ρ= Density of the air, ω= Ball's angular velocity, v= Velocity through the air, m= mass and x= The distance travelled by the ball in the direction it was kicked.

Beckham, of course, had no clue about the ‘formula’ – that is for scientist’s job to decode, he was just practicing his trade.

So every time you watch the ball hitting the cross-bar or simply curving inside, remember there’s a science to it but don’t tell the players this because they are just displaying their natural gift, a god gifted talent meant to impress the crowd.

Mauricio Pochettino, a former Argentine and current manager of Tottenham Hotspur is not making any excuses on the busy schedule, as they will be playing four matches in a stretch of only ten days beginning with the trip to Selhurst Park on Sunday to take on Crystal Palace. Spurs then meet Rochdale on their FA Cup fifth-round replay three days later, before facing Huddersfield Town on Saturday 3rd March, before the second leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie against Juventus at Wembley four days after that.

In an interview, manager Pochettino said, "I think the team is ready. I think that nearly all the players are fit to compete and available to be selected and that's an advantage and we understand that it's an advantage."

"And of course I think we are capable to cope with the busy, busy fixture (list) and nothing to complain about that."

Argentinian football legend Diego Armando Maradona urged Lionel Messi not to follow through on his vow to quit the national team after its defeat in the Copa America Centenario.

"Messi has to stay in the national team. He has to stay because he still has playing days ahead of him," Maradona was quoted as saying by the Argentinian online newspaper La Nacion.

"He will go to Russia in form to be world champion" at the 2018 World Cup, he added.

Messi, 29, told reporters in the US he had decided to quit after Argentina's defeat on penalties to Chile on Sunday.

He is widely rated as the best player in the world, but it was his fourth defeat in an international final with the Argentinian jersey.

The 1986 World Cup winner Maradona, 55, blamed Argentina's recent lack of trophies on the Argentina Footbal Association.

He accused them of not supporting Messi and letting him take the blame for Sunday's defeat to cover up their shortcomings in managing the sport.
