<p>Six people, including a civilian, lost their lives after&nbsp;clashes erupted&nbsp;between two rival ethnic groups,&nbsp;majority Meitei community and the tribal Kukis in Manipur, a state in northeastern India, on Saturday (September 07), officials reported. This incident marks the highest number of deaths in a single day since the recent wave of violence began a week ago.</p>

<p>"Fighting has been going on between armed groups of both the communities since the morning," said Krishna Kumar, deputy commissioner of Jiribam district, according to Reuters.</p>

<p>Media reports claimed that the civilian was killed while asleep. "He was fired upon in his room itself," Kumar told Reuters, adding that security forces were sent in to bring the situation under control.</p>

<p>This incident marks the first recorded use of rockets in Manipur since conflict broke out 17 months ago, according to officials. It follows just six days after drones were reportedly used for the first time in the region.</p>

<p>As per Hindustan Times, officials said that the rocket was fired at the former chief minister Mairembam Koireng Singh’s home in Moirang around 3:30 PM, using an improvised launcher. The projectile struck within the premises of former chief minister's home, landing only a few metres from his house.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It killed 72-year-old RK Rabei Singh, a priest preparing for a religious ceremony, and injured five of the ex-chief minister’s relatives, including a 13-year-old girl. Earlier the same day, security forces reported a second rocket attack, which hit two buildings in Tronglaobi village at around 4:00 AM.</p>

<p>Mairembam Koireng Singh served as Manipur’s chief minister during three separate terms between 1963 and 1969, passing away in 1994.</p>

<p>A second commando, named&nbsp;Takhellambam Saileshwore,&nbsp;died late Wednesday,&nbsp;according to a report by the news agency PTI, citing sources.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>The encounter&nbsp;lasted about an hour. The police also said that the militants fired RPG shells at the temporary commando post damaging several vehicles parked in the vicinity.</p>

<h2><strong>Two suspected of killing police officer arrested</strong></h2>

<p>This comes two days after the police arrested two people suspected of killing a police officer in the border town.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The suspects, identified as Phillip Khongsai and Hemokholal Mate, also reportedly possessed a pistol containing two live rounds, a Chinese hand grenade, 10&nbsp;live AK ammunition rounds, and 10&nbsp;detonators, all of which were confiscated, said the police.</p>

<p>The duo have been accused of killing Senior Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Chingtham Anand in October last year. The two had allegedly fired at security personnel vehicles after which the police chased and overpowered them.</p>

<p>The Manipur government has imposed a total curfew starting 12:00 am (local time) on January 16 amid fears of “likelihood of breach of peace, disturbance of public tranquility and grave danger to human lives and property within the revenue jurisdiction of Tengnoupal”.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A group of MPs from the opposition alliance INDIA will visit Manipur on July 29 and 30 to assess the situation in the northeastern state which has been engulfed in ethnic violence since May 3.</p>

<p>The delegation of more than 20 opposition MPs will visit Manipur this weekend and will take a first-hand account of the situation in the state, Congress whip in Lok Sabha Manickam Tagore told PTI.</p>

<p>Sources said that one MP each from parties of INDIA bloc or their representatives are expected to be part of the delegation.</p>

<p>The delegation will visit both the valley and the hill regions of the state and meet different communities there. They will also visit some relief camps.</p>

<p>TMC's Sushmita Dev, JMM's Mahua Maji and NCP's Vandana Chavan are likely to be part of the delegation.</p>

Following the death of the constable, a huge mob gathered on the streets of Imphal, defying curfew orders. Police and the rapid action force had use tear gas to disperse the crowd.

The state government in their directive said that authorities should ‘shoot at sight’ in ‘extreme cases’ as fifty-five columns of the Army and Assam Rifles have been deployed to contain widespread rioting. Violence broke out between between tribals and the majority Meitei community which has displaced over 9,000 people from their villages.

<p>Mary spoke to the news agency ANI and said, "The situation in Manipur makes me unhappy... earlier I could not even imagine this much violence. Since last night it has become more frightening."</p>

<p>Three government offices, including that of the office of the recently created Kamjong district, were burnt down by unidentified persons in the eastern Indian state of Manipur, which is witnessing an economic blockade imposed by United Naga Council.</p>

<p>&quot;Around 5 to 6 unidentified persons came around 3:00 am and torched the office of Sub-divisional office,&quot; newly appointed deputy commissioner Armstrong Pame of Kamjong district told PTI.</p>

<p>He said the office of the DC Kamjong was temporarily set up within the SDO office, as the newly built office of DC Kamjong was yet to be inaugurated.</p>

<p>The creation of the Kamjong district, which was carved out from the Ukhrul district, has been strongly protested by various Manipur-based Naga civil bodies including the Tangkhul Naga Long and United Naga Council (UNC) amongst others.</p>

<p>In another incident, two rooms of mini Secretariat were also set on fire by unidentified persons in Ukhrul district in the wee hours today, a police officer said.</p>
