Mohamed Salah's late equaliser earned Liverpool a 2-2 draw with rivals Arsenal in an entertaining Premier League encounter at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, as Gabriel Magalhaes and Jurrien Timber limped off to add to the Gunners' injury woes.

Bukayo Saka gave Arsenal the lead in the ninth minute when he ran on to Ben White's ball over the top, cut inside Andy Robertson and fired past Caoimhin Kelleher at his near post for a 50th Premier League goal on his return from injury.

Virgil van Dijk, perhaps fortunate to avoid a card for a petulant kick at Kai Havertz in the opening exchanges, equalised nine minutes later, nodding home a Luis Diaz flick-on from a corner.

"I think to come back twice is a good thing, and we take the point and we move (on)," Van Dijk told Sky Sports.

Arsenal responded positively and spurned several half-chances, with Saka hitting a shot over the bar and Havertz unable to control Gabriel Martinelli's dangerous ball across the face of goal.

The home fans wanted a penalty just after the half-hour mark when Ibrahima Konate floored Martinelli with a clumsy challenge, but referee Anthony Taylor deemed he got enough of the ball, with Havertz slicing a volley over the top in the aftermath.

Mikel Merino scored his first Arsenal goal just before half-time, meeting Declan Rice's free-kick with a bullet header that was upheld after a lengthy VAR review for offside.

Liverpool improved after the break and Diaz went close five minutes after the restart following a mazy run along the touchline.

<h2>Arsenal ‘very disappointed’</h2>

Gabriel limped off early in the second half, replaced by Jakub Kiwior, as Arsenal sustained another injury to a key player. Recent returnee Timber followed him off later.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta will hope to soon welcome back captain Martin Odegaard, who has been out since September but said in the matchday programme that he is close to a return.

The hosts had to withstand considerable periods of pressure, though they threatened on the counter as Liverpool left gaps at the back.

Salah levelled the game in the 81st minute with a calm tap-in from Darwin Nunez's selfless cross, putting the Egyptian winger eighth on the all-time list and level with Robbie Fowler on 163 career Premier League goals.

The momentum seemed to be with Liverpool to clinch a comeback victory but Arsenal had the ball in the net at the death through a combination of Havertz and Gabriel Jesus, though referee Taylor had already blown for a foul.

Asked about the incident, Arteta said he did not know why a foul had been given in the build-up and declined to comment further.

The draw puts Liverpool second with 22 points from nine games, one point behind Manchester City, and Arsenal move into third with 18 points.

Arteta told reporters he was "very disappointed" his side did not win, but said: "Very proud of the team, especially with the situation that we are going through at the moment."

He added that he would prefer to be five points ahead of City rather than five behind, though he said: "The team is alive, the team wants it."

Liverpool's head coach Arne Slot said that, on balance, he was happy: "Going two times behind against a very strong and good Arsenal team, then to get a point is pleasing to see."

Premier League: Mohamed Salah’s late strike earns Liverpool a draw at Arsenal as Manchester City back on top

Erling Haaland fired Manchester City to the top of the Premier League as the striker sealed a 1-0 win against Southampton, while third-placed Aston Villa were frustrated by Bournemouth's last-gasp leveller on Saturday (Oct 26).

Haaland had gone three league games without a goal but he ended that mini drought in the first half at the Etihad Stadium.

That was enough to lift Pep Guardiola's side into first place, two points ahead of second-placed Liverpool, who can regain pole position if they win Sunday's blockbuster clash with title rivals Arsenal.

City have not lost a league game at the Etihad for two years, a run encompassing 35 games, and bottom of the table Southampton, who have only one point from nine games this season, were never likely to shatter that impressive streak.

With Jack Grealish and Jeremy Doku ruled out, Guardiola made four changes to the team that thrashed Sparta Prague in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Haaland had scored an audacious goal against Sparta and while his effort to kill off Southampton was more prosaic, it was arguably far more valuable given the context of a tense title race.

Matheus Nunes's cross reached Haaland in the fifth minute and the Norwegian showed strength and desire to get to the ball ahead of his marker for a close-range strike.

City spurned several chances to increase their lead but Haaland's 14th goal in all competitions this season gave the unbeaten champions seven wins from nine league matches as they chase a fifth successive title.

"The way Southampton played, they are so demanding. Big credit to them, it was not because we were sloppy or flat. I don't have that feeling," Guardiola said.

"We created chances and unfortunately couldn't score the second. I think we were there and sometimes they are good. We have to accept that."

Aston Villa's hopes of pushing for the title suffered a setback as Bournemouth snatched a 1-1 draw at Villa Park.

Villa are unbeaten in the Champions League, sitting top of the table after seeing off Young Boys, Bayern Munich and Bologna.

But they couldn't follow their latest European success with a domestic victory despite taking the lead in the 76th minute.

Ian Maatsen crossed and Leon Bailey teed up Ross Barkley to hook in his first goal for the club.

But Evanilson rescued Bournemouth with the headed equaliser six minutes into stoppage-time.

<h2>Wolves fightback</h2>

Brentford beat fourth-bottom Ipswich 4-3 in a thrilling clash in west London.

Ipswich's Sam Szmodics produced a fine finish from 15 yards in the 28th minute before George Hirst clipped a composed strike past Mark Flekken three minutes later.

But Yoane Wissa netted in the 44th minute and Harry Clarke's own goal seconds later hauled Brentford level.&nbsp;

Bryan Mbeumo's 51st-minute penalty, awarded for Clarke's foul on Keane Lewis-Potter, put Brentford 3-2 up.

Capping a miserable day for Clarke, he was sent off in the closing stages after fouling Lewis-Potter to earn a second booking.

Liam Delap's 86th-minute equaliser appeared to have spared Clarke's blushes, but Mbeumo snatched victory with the last kick of stoppage-time.

Second-bottom Wolves staged a superb fightback to draw 2-2 at fifth-placed Brighton.

Danny Welbeck bagged his sixth goal of the season in first-half stoppage-time and Evan Ferguson struck with a clinical finish from Tariq Lamptey's 85th-minute cross to leave Brighton in control.

But Rayan Ait-Nouri got one back three minutes later and Matheus Cunha saved winless Wolves from a sixth successive league defeat with a deflected equaliser deep into stoppage-time.

Everton face Fulham in Saturday's late game at Goodison Park.

Premier League: Erling Haaland fires Man City to top; Aston Villa, Brighton held in thrillers

Manchester City snatched a controversial 2-1 win at Wolves as John Stones' last-gasp goal was given after a VAR review to send the champions to the top of the Premier League on Sunday.

Pep Guardiola's side trailed to Jorgen Strand Larsen's surprise opener for Wolves early in the first half.

Josko Gvardiol dragged City back on level terms before the interval and, with just seconds left in stoppage-time, Stones headed the visitors to a dramatic sixth win in eight league games this season.

Bottom of the table Wolves claimed Stones' goal should have been disallowed for offside and interference by Bernardo Silva on keeper Jose Sa.

But referee Chris Kavanagh ignored their protests after consulting the pitchside monitor.

City are two points clear of previous leaders Liverpool, who can reclaim pole position with a victory against Chelsea later on Sunday.

Chasing a fifth successive English title, Guardiola's men have set a new club record as their unbeaten run in the league reached 31 games since their loss to Aston Villa in December.

In English top-flight history, only six times has a side gone more than 30 matches without losing, most recently Liverpool's run of 44 games from 2019 to 2020.

City are undefeated in 11 games in all competitions this season after avenging last season's 2-1 defeat on their previous visit to Wolves.

The champions were rocked after just seven minutes when Nelson Semedo's pin-point low cross reached Strand Larsen at the far post and the striker eluded Stones for a simple close-range finish.

Erling Haaland is the most celebrated Norway striker but his international team-mate had stolen the spotlight from him for once.

It was the fifth time in seven league games that City had fallen behind.

They nearly hit back immediately as Ilkay Gundogan's dummy gave Silva space for a low shot from 12 yards that was pushed away by Sa.

Unusually sloppy at the back, Guardiola's side were almost breached again when Semedo sprinted through a gaping hole in the visitors' defence, only to be denied by Ederson's save.

<h2>City relief</h2>

Guardiola was a picture of frustration as he prowled and scowled on the touchline.

Savinho's air-shot drew mocking cheers from Wolves fans, but Gvardiol silenced the locals in the 33rd minute.

Taking possession on the edge of the Wolves area, the Croatian defender looked up to set his sights before unleashing a superb curler that whistled into the top corner.

Gvardiol's fifth goal in his last seven away league games was the prelude to a period of City pressure that kept Wolves penned inside their own area until half-time.

Haaland had scored eight goals in his four previous league appearances against Wolves, averaging a goal once every 40 minutes.

He was far more anonymous this time and it took 49 minutes before he finally had a chance, which the 24-year-old squandered with a complete miskick from eight yards.

Faced with Wolves' massed defence, City centre-back Ruben Dias tried his luck with a 25-yard drive that was well saved by Sa.

Matheus Cunha was close to putting Wolves back ahead against the run of play with a fizzing drive that was just off target.

Gundogan's free-kick deflected wide and Jack Grealish's drive was held by Sa as City kept probing away before finally snatching the winner.

Stones rose to head home from a corner, with Silva initially blocking Sa's view and briefly making contact with the keeper before ducking down as the ball flew past him.

The goal was initially disallowed but VAR told Kavanagh to check the pitchside monitor and he overturned his decision as Guardiola and his players danced a relieved jig of delight.

Premier League: John Stones bags controversial winner as Man City survive Wolves scare

Manchester City and the Premier League both claimed victory on Monday after the champions challenged the English top flight's rules on commercial deals.

City launched legal action against the associated party transaction (APT) rules earlier this year on the grounds they were anti-competitive.

The APT rules are designed to ensure commercial deals with entities linked to a club's owners reflect fair market value.

The case is separate from an ongoing hearing involving City, with the club fighting 115 charges relating to alleged breaches of Premier League financial rules.

The Premier League said on Monday that City were "unsuccessful in the majority of (their) challenge" and that the tribunal considering the case had determined the APT rules were necessary and pursued a legitimate objective.

But City released a statement saying the tribunal had declared the APT rules "unlawful" and that the league had abused a dominant position under competition law.

The Premier League said the tribunal had supported the legitimacy of the regulations and said it had found them essential to make the profitability and sustainability rules (PSR) effective.&nbsp;

It said the tribunal had agreed with the Premier League that if a transaction was evidently not at fair market value, that would distort competition within the league.

The league also said the panel had rejected City's argument that the purpose of the rules was to discriminate against clubs with ownership from the Gulf region.

The Premier League said the panel found in favour of City in "two respects only" -- that shareholder loans should not be excluded from APT rules and that a "limited number of amendments" to the APT rules made earlier should not be retained.

Manchester City said the panel found the APT rules were "structurally unfair" and that the panel had set aside specific decisions of the Premier League to restate the fair market value of two transactions entered into by the club.

Premier League, Manchester City both claim victory in legal battler over commercial deal rules

Mateo Kovacic scored twice as Manchester City clinched a dramatic 3-2 win against Fulham on Saturday.

Pep Guardiola's side suffered a first-half shock when Andreas Pereira put Fulham ahead at the Etihad Stadium.

But Kovacic, filling in for the injured Rodri, struck either side of half-time to settle City's nerves.

The Croatian midfielder's brace was followed by Jeremy Doku's blistering strike before Rodrigo Muniz netted Fulham's second to set up a tense finish.

City remain unbeaten in their first 10 games in all competitions this season, with five wins from seven league matches putting them firmly in contention for a fifth successive title.

They sit in second place, one point behind leaders Liverpool after ending a two-match winless run in the top-flight.

Questions have been asked over how City will cope without the influential Rodri after the Spain international was ruled out for the rest of the season with a serious knee injury.

But while Guardiola may have been concerned at how Fulham were able to take control for spells, in Kovacic they have an able deputy.

City started strongly with Ilkay Gundogan driving just wide and Erling Haaland shooting across the face of goal.

Haaland also had a free-kick blocked and then headed at Bernardo Leno before City were caught napping on Fulham's first attack as Adama Traore broke away from Rico Lewis.

The Spaniard should have punished City but was denied by the feet of Ederson.

City switched off again in 26th minute and this time were made to pay.

They failed to deal with a deep cross from Antonee Robinson and the ball was worked inside to Raul Jimenez, whose clever backheel flick dropped perfectly for Pereira to volley home.

Fulham should have increased their lead moments later as Alex Iwobi teed up Traore but again the former Wolves man erred, scooping over the bar as Ederson closed in.

The Cottagers were to rue their misses as City began their fightback when Kovacic levelled just after the half-hour mark.

Kovacic drove in from the edge of the box, via a deflection off Joachim Anderson, after a corner fell to him invitingly.

The former Chelsea star put City ahead with an assured finish two minutes after the break.

Silva created the chance with a nice lay-off and Kovacic did the rest, beating Sander Berge with a nice touch and curling in a shot from 18 yards.

Doku bagged the vital third goal in the 82nd minute as he cut inside from the left and rattled a shot into the top corner.

Fulham made City work until the end as Muniz turned to score with a deflected shot two minutes from full-time.

Kovacic drove in from the edge of the box, via a deflection off Joachim Anderson, after a corner fell to him invitingly. ALSO READ | England skipper Ben Stokes ruled out from first Test against Pakistan The former Chelsea star put City ahead with an assured finish two minutes after the break. Premier League: Man City sink Fulham to get title bid back on track; Arsenal beat resolute Southampton

Joining Ipswich Town might have seemed unthinkable for Kalvin Phillips when he was one of the first names on the England team sheet and his career was on a steep upward curve.

But now the 28-year-old former Leeds United midfielder is thankful to the Suffolk club for helping rebuild a career that was going completely off the rails.

Phillips played almost every minute of England's run to the final of the delayed Euro 2020 tournament after bursting on to the international scene under former coach Gareth Southgate.

His rapid rise resulted in a 42 million pounds ($55 million) move to Manchester City in July 2022 but rather than take his game to the next level -- Phillips stalled.

City manager Pep Guardiola's comments that Phillips returned from the Qatar World Cup out of shape hardly helped and the following January he was loaned out to West Ham United.

Phillips' stock fell even further there, giving away a goal on his debut, getting sent off in his second league start then being substituted at halftime in his third. He reached a new low in a game at Newcastle United in March when he came on as a substitute with West Ham leading 3-1 and conceded a penalty as the Hammers eventually lost 4-3.

There are positive signs, however, that Phillips has turned a corner since joining promoted Ipswich on loan and Saturday's trip to West Ham offers the chance to prove a few people wrong.

"(When coming to Ipswich) I made a decision that I wanted to play my football, not stress free, but with less stress and less eyes on me maybe," Phillips told former Leeds team mate Patrick Bamford on the My Mate's a Footballer podcast.

"At West Ham I felt like there were quite a lot of eyes on me because it was my first loan move since going to City. Obviously it didn't work out well and I got quite a bit of stick. Sometimes you can handle that well, sometimes you can go the other way and handle it not so well!"

Phillips is full of praise for Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna whose team has earned four draws from six league matches in the club's first top-flight campaign for 22 years.

"The main reason I came to Ipswich was just to get back playing football week in week out, and make sure that I'm fit again, and I'm not getting many injuries," Phillips said. "Every club I'd go to, the manager and nutritionist, they'd always speak about weight before they'd say anything else. At a point it peed me off a little bit.

"Now I've come to Ipswich and the manager is an unbelievable person as well as a manager. We spoke about all the past stuff that happened in my career. He just said he wanted me to get to where I was when I was at Leeds."

Phillips was not even part of the conversation when England's squad was announced on Thursday for next week's Nations League fixtures.

For now though, all that he cares about is playing football again with a smile on his face.

"From day one, McKenna made me feel like I was wanted there and that was going to play a massive part this season," he said.

Manchester City discard Kalvin Phillips thanks Ipswich Town for career revival

Manchester City will look to put behind recent disappointment as they take on Slovan Bratislava in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday (Oct 2). While all eyes will be on Man City’s performance, star player Phil Foden will look to break his duck for this season so far. Foden is yet to score this season while Man City have won only one of their last four matches, raising question marks on the 2023 European champion’s performance.

<h2>Pep backs Foden</h2>

"Maybe I can have some doubts about many things, but Phil Foden is going to be back! As much as he feels good, he will be back," Guardiola told reporters.

"I think in 30 minutes at St James' Park [in a 1-1 draw against Newcastle on Saturday], I felt already something that I like that I didn't see for example, against Watford."

City drew blank in their opening Champions League match of the season after a stalemate against Italian side Inter Milan. They needed a stoppage time equaliser against Arsenal to rescue a point, while another draw against Newcastle United in the Premier League has seen them surrender the top spot.

On the other hand, Foden has not reached the standards of last season, having failed to impress. He has started the recent four of the five matches on the bench and is yet to fire on all cylinders for the Blue side of Manchester.

Tuesday’s encounter will be the perfect stage for Foden to make his mark with Slovan Bratislava being humiliated 5-1 by Scottish champions Celtic on matchday 1.

Pep and Co have an easy next few games as they will face the likes of Fulham, Wolves, Sparta Praha and struggling Southampton in the coming weeks. City’s next big test will be the League Cup contest against Spurs at the end of the month.

'Phil Foden is going to be back': Pep Guardiola backs misfiring Man City star ahead of Champions League clash

Manchester City failed to shrug off the absence of Rodri in a 1-1 draw at Newcastle as they dropped Premier League points for the second consecutive game on Saturday.

The Spaniard has been ruled out for the rest of the season due to a serious knee injury picked up in last weekend's fiery 2-2 draw with title rivals Arsenal.

Josko Gvardiol put the visitors in front at St James' Park, but Newcastle were well worthy of the point given to them by Anthony Gordon's second-half penalty.

A point edges City two points clear at the top of the table, but they could be overtaken by Liverpool, Aston Villa and Arsenal by the end of the weekend.

Guardiola described Rodri, who is unbeaten in his past 52 Premier League appearances stretching back to February 2023, as&nbsp;"irreplaceable" but vowed to find a collective solution.

Teenager Rico Lewis was thrust forward into a central midfield role alongside Mateo Kovacic.

But City lacked the control and poise so often provided by Rodri on and off the ball.

Newcastle have lost only one of their opening six Premier League games of the season but until now results have been better than the performances from Eddie Howe's men this season.

The Magpies were also missing key personnel with last season's top goalscorer Alexander Isak out injured.

Neither side had seriously threatened until Gvardiol collected Jack Grealish's pass inside the box and produced a finish Erling Haaland would be proud of by curling a low shot into the far corner.

City should have quickly doubled their lead when Nick Pope's clearance fell to Ilkay Gundogan, who mishit his attempted lob of the England goalkeeper rather than picking out Haaland.

Newcastle had to wait till first-half stoppage time to test Ederson.

Joelinton brilliantly took down a Kieran Trippier free-kick and fired goalwards only to be denied by his Brazil team-mate.

<h2>Gordon levels for Newcastle</h2>

However, Newcastle were rewarded for a bright start to the second half.

Gordon got in behind and was brought down by Ederson as he tried to round the goalkeeper.

The England international picked himself up to confidently slot home the penalty.

Roared on by vociferous home crowd, Newcastle had the champions clinging on.

Referee Jarred Gillett turned down appeals for a second penalty when Kyle Walker challenged Joelinton before Ederson flew off his line to deny Gordon.

Guardiola responded with the introduction of last season's Premier League player of the year in Phil Foden and City turned the momentum around to finish strongly.

Foden had City's best chance to snatch all three points when he fired too close to Pope.

And Pope was needed to produce a stunning save from Bernardo Silva's volley.

Haaland also headed at the goalkeeper in stoppage time as the Norwegian was held scoreless for the first time in the Premier League this season.

City could still have suffered their first defeat of the season had Sean Longstaff not pulled a great chance wide in the final 10 minutes.

But the dropped points offer more encouragement to City's title rivals that their grip on the title is beginning to loosen.

Blow to Manchester City as Rodri ruled out for rest of the season with ACL tear

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola says he feels critics of the Premier League champions want the club wiped "from the face of the Earth" over their alleged breaches of financial rules. City, who have dominated English football since Guardiola's arrival in 2016, face a hefty points deduction or even expulsion from the league if found guilty on some or all of the 115 charges relating to financial regulations.

A long-awaited hearing into charges brought by the Premier League in February 2023 finally began at the start of the week.

Guardiola has claimed previously that some of the club's rivals hope to see them found guilty and he appears in no doubt they would expect punishment to be severe.

He brought up the matter unprompted ahead of Sunday's clash with Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium while talking about the tendency of people to overly criticise isolated bad performances.

"During a season, you can say, 'Oh, it was a bad season'," said Guardiola. "But for performances, some people say, 'Oh, it's a disgrace, it is a disaster, it's unacceptable'. No, during 90 minutes it's one bad afternoon when they were better.

"But I would say - I'm sorry, I want to defend my club, especially in these modern days when everyone is expecting us not to be relegated, to be disappeared off the face of the Earth, the world - that we have better afternoons than the opponents. That's why we win a lot."

City faces 80 breaches of financial rules between 2009 and 2018, plus a further 35 of failing to cooperate with a Premier League investigation.

The club is accused of failing to provide accurate financial information, including revenue from sponsors and salary details of managers and players.

However, City have vehemently denied any wrongdoing.

Pep says critics want Manchester City ‘wiped from earth’s face’ over PL champions facing alleged FFP breach

Pep Guardiola admits Manchester City will have an "advantage" when they face Arsenal on an extra day's rest, but the champions are sweating on Kevin De Bruyne's fitness for the crucial clash with their title rivals.

Guardiola's side played at home in their Champions League draw with Inter Milan on Wednesday, while Arsenal had to wait until Thursday to travel to Italy for their goalless stalemate against Atalanta.

Guardiola believes the additional 24 hours of recovery could play a role in deciding the first meeting this term between the clubs that have finished first and second for the last two seasons.

City won both of those title races to leave Arsenal still waiting for their first English crown since 2004.

A victory at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday would be a significant boost to City's hopes of an unprecedented fifth successive Premier League title, with Guardiola grateful for a rare piece of help from the fixture schedulers.

"It is an advantage but I am going to make a list in the last six years of how many times we faced a tough team with an extra day of rest. It is a very long list," he said with a healthy dose of sarcasm.

City's recovery time advantage might be offset by the potential absence of Belgium midfielder De Bruyne after he limped off during the goalless draw against Inter.

Asked if De Bruyne would be fit to face Arsenal, Guardiola said: "He feels a bit better today. Tomorrow we're training and we'll see. He could be involved."

Fuelled by Erling Haaland's nine goals, City have already established themselves as the team to beat once again this season.

<h2>Both years have been so close</h2>

The champions, who boast a 100 per cent record after four league games, sit two points ahead of Arsenal, who have won three and drawn one.

But Guardiola has a healthy respect for the threat posed by Arsenal after the north Londoners took the title fight down to the final day last season.

"The set pieces are not easy because they are taller than us. They defend the space, they are incredible with the runners," he said.

"It is always two against one with Gabriel (Magalhaes) and (William) Saliba focused on Erling. That is why it is difficult to play them. I have to read well the way we have to do it."

Although they finished above them, City failed to beat Arsenal last term, losing 1-0 at the Emirates Stadium, drawing 0-0 in Manchester and suffering a penalty shoot-out defeat in the Community Shield.

"It's always been a tight game in the last few years," Guardiola said. "They do many good things. They're a complete team, which is why they've been our biggest rivals in the last two seasons.

"Every season they are better and better. Both years have been close, but we have been so strong and we are still strong."

City would move five points clear of Arsenal with a first victory over them since April 2023.

But Guardiola insists it is far too early in the season for the result to be regarded as significant no matter who wins.

"In this early stage of the season, nothing more than the mood over the next few games will be decided. In terms of the table it's not really important," he said.

"It'll be more important when we go to London in the second half of the season."

He could be involved." Fuelled by Erling Haaland's nine goals, City have already established themselves as the team to beat once again this season. Both years have been so close The champions, who boast a 100 per cent record after four league games, sit two points ahead of Arsenal, who have won three and drawn one. I have to read well the way we have to do it." Although they finished above them, City failed to beat Arsenal last term, losing 1-0 at the Emirates Stadium, drawing 0-0 in Manchester and suffering a penalty shoot-out defeat in the Community Shield. "It's always been a tight game in the last few years," Guardiola said. "They do many good things. They're a complete team, which is why they've been our biggest rivals in the last two seasons. ALSO READ | IND vs BAN: Rohit Sharma, Richard Kettleborough react after Virat Kohli's dismissal in second innings "Every season they are better and better. Both years have been close, but we have been so strong and we are still strong." City would move five points clear of Arsenal with a first victory over them since April 2023. But Guardiola insists it is far too early in the season for the result to be regarded as significant no matter who wins. "In this early stage of the season, nothing more than the mood over the next few games will be decided. In terms of the table it's not really important," he said. "It'll be more important when we go to London in the second half of the season." Disclaimer: This story has been published from a news agency feed with minimal edits to adhere to WION's style guide. Premier League: Man City have rest 'advantage' in Arsenal showdown - Pep Guardiola

Manchester City made a sluggish start to their Champions League campaign as they drew 0-0 against Inter Milan on Wednesday, while Paris Saint-Germain needed a last-minute goal to beat tournament newcomers Girona. Pep Guardiola's side have won all four of their Premier League games this season but failed to break down Italian champions Inter in a repeat of the 2023 final won by City.

City lost Kevin De Bruyne to injury at half-time and Phil Foden fired straight at Inter goalkeeper Yann Sommer with their best chance as Erling Haaland was kept quiet on a night he was chasing his 100th goal for the English club.

"It was a very intense game against a strong opponent. We knew what was coming, they are a top team as well and they are used to winning, so we were not going to have an easy job," City defender Ruben Dias told TNT Sports.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan could have won it for Inter when he blazed over 15 minutes from time, allowing City to extend their unbeaten run in the competition to 24 matches -- one off the record set by Manchester United between 2007 and 2009.

It is just the second time in 42 home Champions League games under Guardiola that City have failed to score. "Our plan was to show that we're not scared to play here," said Inter midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu.

PSG&nbsp;looked as if they would also have to settle for a point against European debutants Girona, who are backed by the City Football Group and ran Real Madrid close for several months in Spain last season before coming third.

However, a goalkeeping blunder from Paulo Gazzaniga in the 90th minute resulted in Nuno Mendes' cross squirming through his grasp and handed the French champions victory.

"It was a difficult game, they're a team that plays well with the ball," Mendes told Canal Plus. "I was surprised (by the goal). The goalkeeper was there and it got through."

Last season's runners-up Borussia Dortmund, beaten by Madrid in the final, had English winger Jamie Gittens to thank as the 20-year-old came off the bench and scored twice in a 3-0 win at Club Brugge. Serhou Guirassy added a stoppage-time penalty for his first Dortmund goal since arriving in the summer from Stuttgart.

Celtic began in style by thrashing Slovan Bratislava 5-1 in Glasgow, winning their opening game in the Champions League for the first time in 13 attempts. Liam Scales' powerful header put Celtic ahead and the hosts struck again through Kyogo Furuhashi early in the second half before Arne Engels converted a penalty for 3-0.

Kevin Wimmer pulled one back with a fine strike for the Slovak champions, who came through four rounds of qualifying, but Celtic pulled away with further goals from Daizen Maeda and Adam Idah.

"It's a fantastic night," Celtic captain Callum McGregor told TNT Sports. "I hope the supporters enjoyed it because the managers and players did. This is the next level for the group in terms of growth and development."

Bologna drew 0-0 at home to Shakhtar Donetsk in the Italian team's first ever Champions League match. Lukasz Skorupski saved an early penalty from Shakhtar's Georgiy Sudakov.

Sparta Prague swept Red Bull Salzburg aside 3-0 with goals from Kaan Kairinen, Victor Olatunji and Qazim Laci, as the Czech champions won for the first time in the competition proper since 2003.

"We are deeply saddened by the tragic passing of our supporter Philip Dooley, following a road traffic accident in Bergamo in the early hours of this (Tuesday) morning," said Liverpool in a statement.

Liverpool did not say how old Dooley was when he died, nor give details of the accident.&nbsp;

Italian media report that Dooley was a 51-year-old Irishman and that he was killed at around 1am local time (2300 GMT Monday), an hour after landing at Bergamo's Orio al Serio airport while trying to cross a nearby motorway.

Liverpool fan dies in road accident before AC Milan clash, confirms club

Manchester City midfielder Rodri has warned that leading footballers could go on strike if clubs continue to face an ever-expanding schedule.

City, the 2023 Champions League winners, face Italian giants Inter Milan at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday, in their first match of the competition's new league phase.

The expanded 36-team tournament will see all clubs play eight league fixtures, with 16 teams to play in an extra two-legged play-off round before the last 16.

City will also compete in an expanded Club World Cup at the end of the season.

"I think we are close to that. I think if you ask any player, he will say the same," said Rodri when asked on Tuesday if there was a possibility of players going on strike.

"It is not the opinion of Rodri or whatever. I think it's the general opinion of the players."

"And if it keeps this way, there will be a moment where we have no other option, I really think, but let's see," he added.

"I don't know what's going to happen, but it's something that worries us because we are the guys that suffer."

<h2>'Impossible to sustain the level'</h2>

City could play as many as 75 games this season, with international players set for an even heavier workload.

"From my experience between 40-50 is the amount of games in which a player can perform in the highest level," said Rodri, who made his first City appearance of the season in Saturday's win over Brentford.

"After that, you drop because it is impossible to sustain the physical level... Someone has to take care of ourselves because we are the main characters of this sport or business or whatever you want to call it."

City manager Pep Guardiola was more reserved, however, saying: "We are in our first game, then the second and we will see what happens in the last games to go through.

"It is not necessary to look now. It's in the future. We will see."

Rodri's comments echoed those of Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson, who said players were being ignored by football chiefs when it came to the issue of fixture congestion.

Liverpool are away to AC Milan on Tuesday in their opening fixture.

"Sometimes nobody asks the players what they think about adding more games," Alisson told reporters on Monday.

"Maybe our opinion doesn't matter, but everybody knows what we think about having more games. Everybody's tired of that."

England's Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) is involved in two separate legal challenges to FIFA, the sport's global governing body, over the calendar and its introduction of a 32-team Club World Cup.

"This is the year when we can look at the calendar and say clearly, 'This doesn't work'. Players see that, and they are now experiencing it," PFA chief executive Maheta Molango, responding to Rodri's comments, said.

"Those who run the game must now sit up and take notice."

FIFA is yet to reply to Rodri's remarks, but has previously slammed European leagues for their "commercial hypocrisy".

"Those leagues apparently prefer a calendar filled with friendlies and summer tours, often involving extensive global travel," FIFA said in July.

Manchester City's Rodri warns of STRIKE amid growing number of matches

Arsenal players are unfazed by Manchester City striker Erling Haaland's goal-scoring rampage, midfielder Jorginho said vouching for the Gunners' confidence ahead of Sunday's Premier League clash with City. City have had a perfect campaign in the league so far, while Arsenal secured three wins and a draw. Fresh off nine goals in four league games, including two hat-tricks, Haaland has scored 99 goals from 103 appearances for City across all competitions. The Norwegian aims for his century in Wednesday’s Champions League clash against Inter Milan, while Arsenal begin their European campaign at Atalanta on Thursday and prepare to meet City at the Etihad on Sunday.

“Erling scoring again... it is starting to make us laugh,” the 32-year-old Italian said. “We look because we watch all the games and we love the Premier League." "We watch (City) as well, which is normal. It doesn’t get to our head. We need to focus on us and that is what we are trying to do."

Jorginho praised Arsenal’s mentality, saying it has improved since last season, pointing to their gritty 1-0 win over Tottenham HotSpur despite missing key players like captain Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice.

Premier League 2024/25: Arsenal players not flustered by Erling Haaland's relentless form, says Jorginho

Manchester City will fight to avoid potential expulsion from the Premier League for financial breaches as sport's "trial of the century" begins on Monday.

Premier League champions City have been charged with 115 alleged breaches of the competition's financial regulations.

City deny any wrongdoing and have said they have a "comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence" to clear their name.

But if they are found guilty, they could face a range of punishments, including a severe points penalty or even be kicked out of the Premier League.

Everton and Nottingham Forest were both hit by points deductions last season for single breaches of the league's profit and sustainability rules.

With City winning eight league titles since 2012, including six of the last seven, a guilty verdict could prompt a slew of compensation claims from rival top-flight clubs.

City's financial affairs have come under regular scrutiny since their takeover by Sheikh Mansour's Abu Dhabi United Group in 2008.

If the verdict goes against City, there is potential for strained diplomatic relations between the United Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates, where Mansour is a deputy prime minister.

The hearing, which is not a court case, will be heard by an independent commission and could take 10 weeks to complete.

City's legal team were photographed arriving at London's International Dispute Resolution Centre for the start of the hearing on Monday.

David Pannick from Blackstone Chambers, who is City's lead barrister, was seen on his way into the venue close to St Paul's Cathedral in central London.

A verdict is not expected to be announced until 2025, with City likely to appeal if they are found guilty.

Of the 115 charges, 80 are for breaches of the regulations between 2009 and 2018, while a further 35 relate to failing to cooperate with the Premier League's investigation.

The root of suspicion comes from leaked documents published by German outlet Der Spiegel back in 2018.

Emails purportedly sent between City executives showed the club had allegedly inflated sponsorship revenue from Abu Dhabi state-controlled airline Etihad and telecoms firm Etisalat by disguising direct investment from the Abu Dhabi United Group as income.

Other documents claimed to show off-the-books payments to then manager Roberto Mancini via consultancy fees from a club in Abu Dhabi.

<h2>'Irrefutable evidence'</h2>

City have already defended their position in one case after overturning a two-year ban from the Champions League by UEFA at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in 2020.

CAS found most of the alleged breaches of overstating sponsorship revenue were either not established or "time-barred" because they fell outside the five-year statutory limit for prosecution.

No so such time limitation clause exists in the Premier League case, although City remain confident of avoiding sanctions.

"I know what people are looking for, I know what they are expecting. I know it because I have read it for many years but I've said everyone is innocent until guilt is proven. So we will see," City manager Pep Guardiola said last week.

Aymeric Laporte was a serial title winner with City before moving to Saudi Arabia's Al Nassr and the defender claimed Guardiola's players were reassured there was nothing to worry about during his time at the club.

"When I was there and the news broke, the sporting director (Txiki Begiristain) and the CEO (Ferran Soriano) came and told all the players and staff that we can all be very calm because not one rule has been broken by Man City," Laporte told Mail Sport.

However, a guilty verdict could bring an end to Guardiola's glorious reign, which includes winning City's first Champions League crown in 2023.

The Spaniard, who is into the final year of his contract, has steadfastly backed City's owners but previously said he would walk if they had not been honest with him.

"If you lie to me, the day after I am not here," said Guardiola in 2022.

Severe sanctions would raise doubts over the future of City's cast of star players, including prolific striker Erling Haaland.

Should City prove their innocence, the Premier League will stand accused of being a soft touch outmanoeuvered by the deep pockets of state-backed clubs.

Also Read: Jude Bellingham, Aurelien Tchouameni back for Real Madrid's Champions League opener, confirms Carlo Ancelotti But if they are found guilty, they could face a range of punishments, including a severe points penalty or even be kicked out of the Premier League. Premier League: Champions Manchester City fight against expulsion as trial begins for financial breaches

New Liverpool manager Arne Slot suffered his first setback as his side surprisingly lost 1-0 at home to Nottingham Forest in the Premier League on Saturday but Manchester City maintained their perfect start to the season.

Forest had not tasted victory at Anfield since 1969 but Callum Hudson-Odoi's 72nd minute curler beyond Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson secured the three points as Nuno Espirito Santo's side moved into the Premier League's top five.

Erling Haaland, whose place in Manchester City's side was in doubt after being granted compassionate leave this week, continued his incredible start to the season with two goals as City recovered from conceding after 22 seconds to win 2-1.

Reigning champions City are top with a maximum 12 points from four games, with Liverpool on nine along with third-placed Aston Villa who hit back from 2-0 down to beat Everton 3-2 thanks to a stunning Jhon Duran winner.

Brighton &amp; Hove Albion, who drew 0-0 at home to promoted Ipswich Town, are on eight points along with Forest.

Manchester United's new signing Matthijs de Ligt grabbed his first goal of the season and Marcus Rashford scored for the first time since March as Erik Ten Hag's side cruised to a 3-0 victory at Southampton who are yet to earn a point.

Liverpool's transition from the Juergen Klopp era had appeared seamless as they began the season with three league victories, but they stumbled badly against Forest.

"The result frustrates the most, and we cannot be happy about how the game went. It was a stop-start game and we hardly created any chances," lamented Dutchman Slot. "We only have to look at ourselves - we have to be better. Far too many times we lost the ball around the area, it was not good enough. We have to be better with the ball."

For Forest, their start offers optimism that they can finally begin to look upwards in the table after two seasons fighting against relegation.

They produced a tactically astute display to frustrate Liverpool and then sent their visiting fans wild as Anthony Elanga found his fellow substitute Hudson-Odoi with a brilliant cross-field pass, and the 23-year-old winger cut inside before bending a tremendous effort past Alisson.

"We are working hard, and it is about building and believing in this idea that you can develop," Espirito Santo said.

<h2>Goal Machine</h2>

Man City, whose 115 charges of breaking Premier League financial rules will start to be heard by an independent tribunal next week -- charges the club denies - were stunned as Brentford opened the scoring in the first minute at The Etihad.

Yoane Wissa gave the London side the lead but Norwegian goal machine Haaland struck twice before halftime.

He restored parity in the 20th minute when he scored from a tight angle with his second touch of the game and then muscle through from an Ederson clearance to chip what turned out to be the winning goal.

Haaland was denied a third that would have made him the first player since 1946 to score three successive hat-tricks in the English top flight. He has nine goals in four games -- more than any other English top-flight team has managed this season.

City's neighbours United had lost two of their opening three games to once again put the pressure on manager Ten Hag, but they were convincing winners against Southampton on the south coast as they moved to six points.

Things might have been different though had Saints' Cameron Archer not had a first-half penalty saved by Andre Onana when the score was still 0-0.

"Once Andre stopped the penalty, straight after, we scored a goal with Matthijs de Ligt, the game was all ours and we dominate the game from that point," Ten Hag said.

Leicester City were denied a first win of the season as Jean-Philippe Mateta's stoppage-time penalty salvaged a 2-2 draw for Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

Jamie Vardy and Wilfred Ndidi had put the Foxes 2-0 ahead but Mateta threw the home side a lifeline and then coolly slotted home a penalty at the death.

West Ham United also needed a stoppage-time goal to grab a 1-1 draw at London rivals Fulham -- Danny Ings striking in the 95th minute after Raul Jimenez had given the hosts the lead.

Premier League: Arne Slot gets reality check with Nottingham Forest loss, Haaland doubles powers City to top

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said he is pleased that the club's long-awaited hearing into 115 charges brought by the Premier League is set to start on Monday.

City face 80 breaches of financial rules between 2009 and 2018, plus a further 35 of failing to cooperate with a Premier League investigation.

The English champions stand accused of failing to provide accurate financial information between 2009 and 2018, including revenue from sponsors and salary details of managers and players.

City have vehemently denied any wrongdoing and Guardiola has backed his superiors when pressed about the charges in the past.

"Start soon, and hopefully finish soon," Guardiola said of the hearing at his pre-match press conference on Friday ahead of Brentford's trip to the Etihad. "I am looking forward to the decision.

"I'm happy it's starting on Monday. I know there will be more rumours, new specialists about the sentences.

"We're going to see. I know what people are looking forward to, what they expect. I know what I read for many, many years. Everybody is innocent until guilt is proven. So we'll see."

If found guilty on some or all of the charges, City face a severe points deduction and possibly even expulsion from the Premier League.

The hearing is set to last at least two months, with a decision not expected until 2025.

The Premier League brought the charges in February 2023 but there has been a lengthy wait for the case to proceed before an independent commission.

In the meantime, City have lifted two more Premier League titles and the club's first-ever Champions League last year.

Since a 2008 takeover from Sheikh Mansour, a member of the United Arab Emirates royal family, City have been transformed into the dominant force in English football.

They have won eight of the last 13 Premier League titles, including a record four consecutive league crowns in the past four seasons.

Pep Guardiola ‘happy’ that Manchester City’s hearing into 115 charges to begin on Monday

The hearing into Manchester City's 115 alleged breaches of Premier League financial regulations will begin on Monday, according to ESPN.

City were referred to an independent commission over the alleged breaches, which go back to the 2009-10 campaign, in February 2023. The club allegedly breached rules relating to the provision of accurate financial information.

City are also charged with failing to comply with Premier League rules requiring clubs to follow UEFA's Financial Fair Play regulations from the 2013-14 to 2017-18 seasons and failing to follow Premier League rules on profit and sustainability (PSR) from the 2015-16 to 2017-18 seasons.

The club, who won an unprecedented fourth successive top-flight title in May, said at the time of the referral to the commission that they were surprised by the league's "issuing of these alleged breaches".

"The club welcomes the review of this matter by an independent commission, to impartially consider the comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence that exists in support of its position," City added.

Sources told ESPN the hearing is set to begin on Sept. 16 and is expected to last about two months with a final verdict, including any appeal, to be reached by the end of the season.

City could face penalties such as a points deduction or relegation if found guilty.

Everton and Nottingham Forest had points deducted last season for breaching PSR regulations.

Manchester City were not immediately available to comment, while the Premier League declined to comment.

Hearing into Manchester City’s alleged financial breaches begin on Monday – Reports

Manchester United had an evening to forget in the Premier League after they lost 3-0 to arch-rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday (Sep 2). United, beaten in stoppage time by Brighton last week were condemned to a handsome win for Arne Slot’s side as the latter maintained a perfect start to the Premier League season. After the match, Erik ten Hag admitted key reasons for the defeat while also insisting he is not Harry Potter to work magic when it comes to the fitness issues of new arrival Manuel Ugarte.

<h2>Ten Hag underlines key reasons for defeat</h2>

"It will take time. It is not like I am Harry Potter,” Ten Hag said while speaking to Sky Sports. "We made mistakes and they were very clinical in finishing, they did very well. All three goals are mistakes from us - individual errors. Maybe about the last one, you can debate, 'where is our double six?' but all the others, Liverpool did brilliant. Arne took over, the turnover and the way they finished was so good.”

"Don't argue this [that the game was level apart from the goals]. It's clear Liverpool deserved it. We have to be humble, take this and improve our game."

United had a poor day at the office having conceded first-half goals through Luis Diaz with the Colombian carrying the Casemiro in his back pocket. The Brazilian was at fault for the opening goal while another mistake saw the lead doubled before the break. Things went from bad to worse for United after Mohamed Salah netted his 10th goal at Old Trafford in all competitions. This was also the seventh consecutive time he had scored at the iconic venue.

United will take on Southampton after the international break as they look to bounce back at St Mary's Stadium. The Saints are winless in all their three matches and will be an easy opponent for the Red Devils to get their mojo back.

'I am not Harry Potter': Erik ten Hag underlines errors, Ugarte injury as key reasons for Man Utd defeat

Erling Haaland netted a hat-trick to fire Manchester City to a 4-1 victory over promoted Ipswich Town on Saturday and lift the champions to the top of the Premier League table.

They lead on goal difference from Brighton &amp; Hove Albion, who defeated Manchester United 2-1 with a last-gasp goal, and Arsenal who struck twice late on to earn a gritty 2-0 win at Aston Villa.

Tottenham Hotspur handed last-placed Everton more misery with a 4-0 victory and West Ham earned their first win of the season, 2-0 over Crystal Palace.

Manchester City scored three times in less than four minutes after conceding a shock early goal to crush Ipswich and remain perfect in their quest for a fifth consecutive league title.

Haaland kicked off City's trio of goals in 191 seconds with a penalty in the 12th minute. Kevin De Bruyne netted less than two minutes later and Haaland struck again to all but seal the victory at Etihad Stadium.

"Last season (Haaland) struggled a lot, especially at the beginning," City manager Pep Guardiola said. "He felt tired and niggles most of the time. This time with the rest with no Euros, he has arrived with a good vibe. The numbers are unbelievable."

<h2>Late Winner</h2>

Brighton earned a dramatic home victory over United at the Amex when Joao Pedro scored in the fifth minute of added time.

Brighton striker Danny Welbeck scored the opener against his former club before Amad Diallo drew Erik ten Hag's men and the game looked destined for a draw.

Brighton's pressure paid off, however, when Simon Adingra chipped the ball over United's defenders for an unmarked Pedro who headed home.

"It was very emotional, always when you get the win in the last minute, it is," Brighton manager Fabian Huerzeler said. "I think we deserved to win, we had a good game not a perfect game."

Goals from Leandro Trossard and Thomas Partey secured Arsenal's win at Villa.

The victory was a measure of revenge after Villa beat the Gunners twice last season, losses that ultimately ended Arsenal's chances of winning the title.

Ollie Watkins missed two gilt-edged chances before substitute Trossard scored in the 67th minute with his first touch and Partey doubled the lead.

"A strong start is always good, especially for the feeling, how you go into a new season," Trossard said. "It's so early on so it's hard to predict what it's going to be at the end of the season, but it's definitely what we're aiming for, is to win games."

Keeper Jordan Pickford's error and Son Heung-min's brace helped Spurs to a comprehensive 4-0 victory over struggling Everton.

Yves Bissouma and Cristian Romero also scored as Tottenham eased to their first win of the campaign against a visiting side who have conceded seven times in two games.

"The performance was good," Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou said. "It's really encouraging for us."

Second-half goals from Tomas Soucek and Jarrod Bowen fired West Ham to victory at Selhurst Park.

The visitors broke the deadlock when Palace struggled to clear the ball and Soucek steered the ball home.

Hammers captain Bowen added the second, latching on to a brilliant pass by Max Kilman before lashing a left-footed shot into the net.

There were more heroics from the goalscorers when West Ham's fans charged down to celebrate Soucek's goal, causing an advertising hoarding to collapse, trapping a ball boy.

Erling Haaland netted a hat-trick to fire Manchester City to a 4-1 victory over promoted Ipswich Town on Saturday and lift the champions to the top of the Premier League table. They lead on goal difference from Brighton & Hove Albion, who defeated Manchester United 2-1 with a last-gasp goal, and Arsenal who struck twice late on to earn a gritty 2-0 win at Aston Villa. Tottenham Hotspur handed last-placed Everton more misery with a 4-0 victory and West Ham earned their first win of the season, 2-0 over Crystal Palace. ALSO READ: Premier League 2024/25: Brighton stuns Manchester United with injury-time winner Manchester City scored three times in less than four minutes after conceding a shock early goal to crush Ipswich and remain perfect in their quest for a fifth consecutive league title. The numbers are unbelievable." Late Winner Brighton earned a dramatic home victory over United at the Amex when Joao Pedro scored in the fifth minute of added time. "I think we deserved to win, we had a good game not a perfect game." Goals from Leandro Trossard and Thomas Partey secured Arsenal's win at Villa. "It's so early on so it's hard to predict what it's going to be at the end of the season, but it's definitely what we're aiming for, is to win games." Keeper Jordan Pickford's error and Son Heung-min's brace helped Spurs to a comprehensive 4-0 victory over struggling Everton. Yves Bissouma and Cristian Romero also scored as Tottenham eased to their first win of the campaign against a visiting side who have conceded seven times in two games. "The performance was good," Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou said. "It's really encouraging for us." Second-half goals from Tomas Soucek and Jarrod Bowen fired West Ham to victory at Selhurst Park. Soucek held the hoarding so the child could wriggle out, with Bowen pulling the boy through his teammate's legs to safety. PL 2024/25: Manchester City on top after Haaland’s hat-trick against Ipswich Town; Arsenal win at Villa

A verdict expected in coming months on Manchester City's alleged breaches of the Premier League's financial regulations will not affect the players' performance, manager Pep Guardiola said ahead of Saturday's home game against Ipswich Town.

City were charged in February 2023 with 115 counts since their acquisition by City Football, which is owned by the Abu Dhabi United Group. The club could face penalties such as a points deduction or relegation if found guilty.

Nottingham Forest and Everton were docked points last season for their breaches of the league's profit and sustainability rules.

City deny the charges and are contesting them. An independent commission will review allegations dating back to 2009. Guardiola said City will accept the verdict.

The Times of London said a hearing in the case is to start next month with the outcome known early next year.

"I am happy it starts soon and hopefully it finishes soon for the benefit of all of us," Guardiola told reporters. "Especially for the club, but for all the other Premier League clubs, like for all the people that don't wait for the sentence.

"I wish from deep in my heart to go to the trial, the independent panel - and I say it again, independent panel - and as soon as possible release what happened, and we will accept like always we have done."

Even with the lingering concerns around the club, City added a record fourth-straight Premier League title last season after winning the treble in the 2022-23 season.

Asked about the effect of the case on his team, Guardiola said: "No, we have been three or four years talking about that. We know it is going to happen, we accept it and focus on our matches."

Premier League: İlkay Gündoğan completes Manchester City return from Barcelona, pens one-year deal

Manchester City forward Phil Foden won the Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year award on Tuesday.

Foden played a key role in City winning an unprecedented fourth consecutive Premier League title last term.

The 24-year-old scored 19 times and delivered eight assists for Pep Guardiola's team as they pipped Arsenal to the title on the last day of the season.

"To win this award is something very special and it is one that I am very proud of and grateful for. To be recognised this way by your fellow professionals means everything and I would like to thank everyone who voted for me," Foden said.&nbsp;

"I also want to pay special thanks to Pep, the City coaches and all my teammates as they help me to try and get better every single day."

Foden has already set his sights on a fifth successive Premier League crown after City started their title defence with a 2-0 win at Chelsea on Sunday.

"Last season was another very special one for everyone at the Club but now all our focus is concentrated on trying to achieve more success this term," he said.

Foden also won the 2023-24 Premier League player of the season award and was named the Football Writers' Association footballer of the year.

City director of Football Txiki Begiristain added: "Everyone here is so thrilled to see Phil win this award. To have your fellow professionals recognise you in such a way is very special.

"Phil embodies everything we stand for at Manchester City. He is a supremely talented player but is someone who always strives to seek to improve.

Chelsea forward Palmer was named the men's PFA young player of the year.

Foden and Palmer's awards made it the&nbsp;first time that both the senior and young player trophies went to English players since 2009-10, when Wayne Rooney and James Milner took home the silverware.

England international Palmer was second only to Haaland in the Premier League scoring charts with 22 goals in a breakthrough campaign after leaving Guardiola's team to move to Stamford Bridge.

City enjoyed a clean-sweep of the main awards at the Manchester ceremony as Khadija Shaw was voted the women's Player of the Year.

Jamaican forward Shaw was the top scorer in the Women's Super League with 21 goals as City were edged out for the title on goal difference by Chelsea.

"I am both happy and proud to have received this award, to be recognised in such a way by my peers is a very special honour," Shaw said.

Premier League: Man City's Phil Foden wins PFA Player of the Year award

Pep Guardiola’s decision to give many of Manchester City’s star players more time to recover from Euro 2024 paid dividends on Sunday when their stand-ins helped the defending champions to a 2-0 win at Chelsea under new coach Enzo Maresca.

Kyle Walker, John Stones and Phil Foden – stalwarts for England in their run to the Euro final in July – were on the bench at Stamford Bridge and Spain's Rodri was out of the squad altogether as he recovers from an injury picked up in Germany.

In came right-back Rico Lewis and winger Savinho who both tormented Chelsea while Mateo Kovacic, Rodri’s under-study, sealed the win with City’s second goal in the 84th minute after Erling Haaland, fresh from a whole summer off, opened the scoring in the 18th minute.

"We didn't expect it. We are away from our best so three points is the good news. For me it is an honour to be in charge of these guys. I'm so fortunate, I could not say more," Guardiola said when asked about the players who stepped up.

He paid tribute to Kovacic for his role in replacing Rodri whose absences last season coincided with City's three defeats in the league.

"His mum and dad gave (us) an incredible human being, he is a top-class person. Top," Guardiola said.

City are seeking a fifth straight Premier League title having already made history by winning the past four in a row although they face the risk of punishment for alleged breaches of financial rules, claims that the club denies.

Unlike City's decision to rest their Euro stars, Chelsea started with Spain’s Marc Cucurella and England's Cole Palmer who both appeared in the tournament final in Berlin on July 14.

The Blues showed flashes of the style that Chelsea’s big-spending U.S. owners – now on their fourth permanent manager since they bought the club in 2022 - hope will bring success back to west London.

But in the end, Maresca’s side were mostly reduced to unlikely penalty appeals and a fluffed attempt by Nicolas Jackson before Kovacic settled the game.

Palmer – Chelsea's runaway top scorer last season with 22 goals – was largely kept quiet by City’s defence, and new signings Pedro Neto and Marc Guiu failed to pierce the visitors’ back line.

Maresca said he saw progress and pointed to some fine margins in the game, with Haaland's opening goal standing after a narrow offside decision went City's way while Nicolas Jackson was adjudged offside when he scored what would have been an equaliser.

"We competed for large parts of the game," the Italian said. "For some moments, we were even better. We created chances. And I think the big difference today between us and them was especially inside the box and the way they managed the ball in the last part of the game."

PL 2024/25: Pep praises youngsters in Manchester City’s win against Chelsea; Haaland completes 100 games

Manchester City will kick off their quest for a fifth consecutive Premier League title on Sunday without Oscar Bobb, who could miss up to four months after breaking his leg in training, and Rodri, who is recovering from an injury sustained at Euro 2024.

City open their season against Chelsea and, with key Euro players rejoining the squad only this week, manager Pep Guardiola acknowledged the squad might not be at full strength.

"We have to (be ready), we have to," Guardiola told reporters on Friday. "I don't know what's going to happen. Everybody knows we are not in the best condition but it doesn't matter, we have a desire to do well. I think there are a lot of teams right now that aren't perfect.

"What I have learned is that the season is so long. You have to be ready physically and mentally. For that, you need rest. We try to do our best in the condition we were in. The players that are here will have to do their best."

Guardiola said he was very sad for Norwegian forward Bobb, who is expected to be out for three or four months after undergoing surgery for a leg fracture.

Rodri was injured just before halftime of Spain's Euro 2024 clash with England in the final.

"He is in training, I don't know, I haven't seen him yet. He feels good. We'll have to see how he feels after training," Guardiola said, then added: "No chance (that he will play on Sunday)."

Rodri, plus England's Kyle Walker, John Stones and Phil Foden returned to training only at the start of the week after their 2023-24 season stretched through to the Euro final on July 14.

"We prioritise the rest," Guardiola said. "I would love to give more time but it is what it is. I demand the best on Sunday against Chelsea. When the players are fitter and better, they have to be better."

The manager wished England international Kalvin Phillips well in his move to newly promoted Premier League side Ipswich Town on a season-long loan that is all but settled.

The defensive midfielder started just six games for City after arriving from Leeds two years and then joined West Ham on loan in January but played only 10 games there before returning to City.

"You have to have minutes -- play, play, play," Guardiola said. "Maybe there is a chance (for Phillips) to come back here in the future."

Premier League: Blow to Manchester City as Oscar Bob out for four months, Rodri ‘not ready’ for opener

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters admits the legal cases facing Manchester City and other top-flight teams have created "uncertainty and frustration" ahead of the new season.

An independent commission is set to rule on the 115 charges against Premier League champions City for alleged financial breaches during the season.

There are also cases to be resolved involving Leicester and Everton, related to alleged breaches of the league's profitability and sustainability rules (PSR).

Asked if the unresolved financial issues would cast a shadow over the 2024/25 season, Masters told Sky Sports: "It does matter, and I understand it creates uncertainty and some frustration but there is no happy alternative to enforcing the rules, which everyone has agreed at the beginning of each season.

"They have looked each other in the eye and shaken each other's hand and said 'we will abide by these rules'. So the Premier League has to enforce rules.

"Whatever difficulty or frustration that creates is part of maintaining and protecting the Premier League's competition, its core values, competitive competition. And that's really my role, and that's what I want to continue doing."

City, who are bidding for an unprecedented fifth successive Premier League title, have won the top-flight crown twice since the charges, which they vehemently deny, were laid in February last year.

Reports have suggested the hearing into City's case could start in September, but Masters refused to be drawn on a timescale.

"I think it does need to be resolved," he said. "It's not in our hands. It's in the hands of an independent panel.&nbsp;

"They are in charge of the timing and the running of the process, and we must let them get on with it."

City's alleged breaches relate to rules requiring the reporting of accurate financial information and the submission of details of manager and player pay information within the relevant contracts.

They also refer to a club's responsibility as a Premier League member to adhere to UEFA's financial regulations and to the league's own profitability and sustainability regulations.

City are alleged to have breached rules requiring them to co-operate and assist with the Premier League's investigation into those breaches, which the league said began in December 2018.

Everton and Nottingham Forest were docked points for PSR breaches last season, and those rules remain in force for the campaign ahead, requiring clubs to limit losses to a maximum of £105 million ($134 million) over three seasons.

"I can't speculate on (whether there will be charges related to the 2023-24 PSR assessment period)," Masters said.

"You can only really adjudicate on it when you have audited accounts and that process doesn't start until towards the end of the year."

Premier League chief says top-flight teams facing legal cases causing 'uncertainty and frustration'

Premier League champions Manchester City are set to learn their fate in the 115 alleged financial regulations breach in early 2025 as the independent commission is likely to start the hearing in September. According to reports on Monday (Aug 12), Man City could learn their fate as early as the first week of January 2025 having been accused of breaching the financial regulations on multiple occasions. With the verdict set to be delivered in January, Man City could face a possible ban or points deduction in the future.

<h2>Man City set to learn fate in 2025</h2>

According to The Times, a hearing for the alleged breaches was likely to start in November; however, it is now being brought forward to mid-September. It is also reported that the hearing from the independent commission will last for 10 weeks, meaning that the verdict could be out by the first week of January, subject to delays. It is hoped that the verdict could be a setback for Man City who recently won their record-breaking fourth consecutive Premier League title.

Man City are reported to have breached multiple Premier League regulations between 2009 and 2023 during their golden period. The club would win the Premier League title on eight occasions while winning the Champions League in 2023. The club has been accused of spending a big amount of money in the transfer market despite suffering losses at times.

<h2>Man City banned in the past</h2>

The club had faced a similar charge in 2020 when UEFA banned Manchester City from European competitions for two seasons. However, that ban was lifted after the Dubai-owned club challenged the matter at the Court of Arbitration for Sports later in the year.

The Times report added that the outcome of a separate legal case that City have brought against league rules that regulate how clubs strike sponsorship or revenue deals with businesses linked to their owners is now due in the next fortnight.

If found guilty of the charges, Manchester City could face a points deduction or even relegation from the top flight, meaning they won’t be able to compete in Europe.

Manchester City to learn fate on 115 charges in early 2025, hearing to start in September: Reports

Manchester City avenged their FA Cup final defeat to Manchester United to lift the Community Shield 7-6 on penalties on Saturday, after a 1-1 draw at Wembley.

The game exploded into life in the final 10 minutes as Alejandro Garnacho gave United the lead before Bernardo Silva levelled in the 89th minute.

Pep Guardiola's men then edged a marathon shoot-out as Jadon Sancho and Jonny Evans failed to score for United.

City have won the Premier League for a record four consecutive seasons but it is the first time in that run that they have won the season opener after defeats to Leicester, Liverpool and Arsenal in the past three years.

The English champions were severely hampered by the absence of a series of key players due to their late return to pre-season after competing at Euro 2024 and the Copa America.

City's England trio of Kyle Walker, John Stones and Phil Foden, as well as Spain midfielder Rodri are yet to return to training following their efforts in reaching the final of Euro 2024.

By contrast, United boss Erik ten Hag showed his desperation to win more silverware by thrusting teenager Kobbie Mainoo straight back into the heart of the action after his starring role for England in Germany.

Despite also leaving Kevin De Bruyne and Silva on the bench, City controlled the game early on with the electric Jeremy Doku causing havoc down the left.

James McAtee could be handed his chance to shine this season by Pep Guardiola with Julian Alvarez set to join Atletico Madrid.

And McAtee, who spent last season on loan at Sheffield United, was inches away from making his mark with a curling effort that came back off the post midway through the first half.

<h2>United rue missed chances</h2>

Ten Hag's job is widely believed to have been saved by beating City back in May and he will feel his side should have got the better of their rivals once more.

United were being starved of possession but still managed to create the better of the chances.

Amad Diallo should have gone for goal himself rather than trying to square to Bruno Fernandes with the goal gaping as half-time approached.

Fernandes started in an unfamiliar centre-forward role due to the absence of Rasmus Hojlund through injury and a lack of match fitness for Joshua Zirkzee.

The United captain thought he had opened the scoring with a stunning strike on the hour mark that was ruled out for offside.

Garnacho was introduced for the final half-hour and brought more pace and invention to the United attack.

The Argentine teed up Marcus Rashford, who could only hit the post with just Ederson to beat.

Garnacho thought he had won the game on 82 minutes as he jinked inside the City defence and fired low into the corner.

However, City rallied and levelled in the final minute of the 90 when Oscar Bobb's cross was headed in by Silva.

The Portuguese midfielder was then the first to miss in the shoot-out as his effort was saved by Andre Onana.

Sancho, though, experienced more penalty woe at Wembley after missing in the final of Euro 2020 for England.

His spot-kick was brilliantly saved by Ederson, who then fired in himself to keep City alive.

Evans gave City the chance to win it when he blazed over.

And it was a tale of redemption for Manuel Akanji, whose saved penalty cost Switzerland in their Euros quarter-final against England, as the centre-back stroked home the winner.

Manchester City edge rivals United on penalties to win Community Shield

Manchester City forward Erling Haaland has been experiencing muscle discomfort, manager Pep Guardiola said after the Norwegian was substituted at half-time for the second straight match on their pre-season tour of the United States.

City were beaten 4-1 on penalties by Barcelona after drawing 2-2 in Florida. Haaland was also replaced at half-time in their 3-2 loss to AC Milan in New York at the weekend.

"He's got some niggles. He didn't feel good," Guardiola said late on Tuesday. "(It is) disturbing something, he doesn't feel comfortable. Muscular niggles is not worth the risk. Sooner or later, he has to take a step. To lose him for three weeks, that would be a problem, as 60-70% of the squad are on holiday."
