Swedish teenager Greta Thunberg's shaming of world leaders and air travellers over climate change has won her millions of admirers and attracted many new followers to her cause.

But it just might cost her the Nobel Peace Prize.

Thunberg, one of few people whose nomination has become known before the awards ceremony, is the bookmakers' favourite to win the prize next month.

At 16, she would be the youngest recipient of the $930,000 award won by the likes of Nelson Mandela, Jimmy Carter and Mikhail Gorbachev. She would be the first to win the prize for environmental work since former US vice president Al Gore shared it in 2007 for raising awareness of climate change.

But Thunberg's youth, outspokenness and confrontational approach - the very factors that have made her the global face of climate change activism present challenging questions for the Norwegian Nobel Committee.

Her shaming of those who choose to travel by airplane - #flightshame – raises hackles among some people. The denunciations of world leaders by a teenager alienates others.

While liberals see her as courageous for telling the truth about climate change, right-wing critics depict her as a liar or hypocrite, suggest her parents have manipulated her or portray her as the ringleader of a socialist conspiracy.

"It's been a while (since Gore was awarded the prize in 2007) so that would boost her chances," Sverre Lodgaard, a deputy member of the award committee from 2003 to 2011, told Reuters.

"The problem is that the principle of 'flight shame' brings her chances down. Shame is not a constructive feeling to bring about change."

Thunberg, who does not usually take media requests directly, did not immediately respond to requests for comment made through her father, Svante Thunberg, and to an email account set up to handle media queries.

Greta Thunberg has hit back at her critics, denying she is paid for her activism or is being "used" by anyone.

She wrote on Facebook in February that "there is no one 'behind' me except for myself. My parents were as far from climate activists as possible before I made them aware of the situation."

'A very Happy young girl'

Thunberg rose to global prominence last year by taking time off school to demonstrate outside Swedish parliament about the lack of action to combat climate change. Inspired by her weekly protest, millions of young people protested around the globe last Friday to put pressure on governments to act.

This week, after sailing to New York in a zero-carbon emissions vessel, she accused leaders at the UN&nbsp;climate summit of stealing her dreams and childhood with empty words on climate change.

"How dare you?" she asked.

Her comments did not go down well with US President Donald Trump, who has questioned climate science and has challenged every major US regulation aimed at combating climate change.

Retweeting footage of her speech, he mocked Thunberg by saying: "She seems like a very happy young girl looking forward to a bright and wonderful future. So nice to see!"

Thunberg responded by changing her Twitter biography to: "A very happy young girl looking forward to a bright and wonderful future."

Trump also suggested he ought to receive the Nobel Peace Prize himself "for a lot of things if they gave it out fairly, which they don't."

With Nobel Prize winners inevitably thrust into the spotlight, the committee will consider Thunberg's age and how a teenager would cope with even more intense public scrutiny than she is already under, Lodgaard said.

Five years ago, Pakistani education activist Malala Yousafzai won the award at the age of 17, but her candidacy was less divisive than Thunberg's.

"It is a tremendous burden to give a Nobel to a teenager," said Asle Sveen, author of several books about the prize.

Even so, he and Lodgaard say Thunberg still has a chance of winning.

The award committee could opt to reduce the weight of expectation on Thunberg by sharing the prize between her and someone else, or simply decide her behaviour has shown she is mature beyond her years, they said.

"They would have seen and heard her and she would have come across as thoughtful and effective. She could be a very good candidate," Lodgaard said.

The Definition of peace

Also possibly counting against Thunberg is a debate in academic circles about whether environmental activism counts towards peace, as defined in Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel's will, even though Gore shared his award with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

"The argument 'for' is that the science shows we are experiencing a dramatic change of climate and we could have extreme conditions, with consequences in terms of war and refugees," Sveen said.

"The argument 'against' would be: does a prize to the environment fall outside the boundaries of Nobel's will? This was an argument used when Al Gore and the IPCC won in 2007."

Apart from Thunberg, other leading possible contenders for the award include Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed for the reconciliation he forged in 2018 with Eritrea.

The neighbours fought a war that killed more than 70,000 people from 1998 to 2000 and failed to implement a 2000 peace deal. Also counting in Abiy's favour is his lifting of bans against opposition parties, said Henrik Urdal, director of the Peace Research Institute Oslo.

Abiy, who took office in April 2018, is pushing Ethiopia towards new democratic freedoms, though rights groups say more needs to be done to heal wounds after years of government repression.

Reporters Without Borders, or the Committee to Protect Journalists, groups that campaign for freedom of the press, could also be recognized.

"There is very distinctly a case for this in the age of fake news," said Dan Smith, director of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute.

Pope Francis, the United Nations Refugee Agency and its head, Filippo Grandi, are also mentioned among possible contenders for the price in recognition of their work towards refugees and as a way to highlight the right to asylum, under pressure in the United States, Europe and elsewhere.

Malala is an activist for female education and the youngest Nobel Prize laureate who was shot at by a gunman on her way back home from school in the Swat district in 2012.

Her concern for Kashmiris appears hypocritical as she has been tight-lipped about atrocities against minorities in her own country, Pakistan's harsh blasphemy laws and forced conversions&nbsp;of Hindu girls.

She also never spoke against the human rights violations of Baloch people. People of Balochistan have raised the issue of their "annihilation" by the Pakistani forces at the forum of UNHRC also, but Malala did not extend any support to them.

Malala has been very selective in condemning human rights abuses. Fearing the backlash, she does not speak against barbarities people have been facing in her own country.

In her recent tweets on Kashmir issue, she reiterated Pakistan state narrative. Indian nationals firmly pointed out her hypocrisy, saying she is running Pakistan's agenda on Kashmir.

Pakistan has been responding hysterically since the time Indian government scrapped Article 370 which gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir. Prime Minister Imran Khan and other ministers tried to portray a manipulated picture with false narratives, however, got no traction from global leaders. Even the Taliban has strongly criticised Pakistan for linking the Kashmir issue with the situation in Afghanistan.&nbsp;

Instead of fighting a social media war with India and making embarrassing statements, Malala, Pakistani leaders and need to accept the reality on Kashmir and solve their own issues.

Malala is an activist for female education and the youngest Nobel Prize laureate who was shot at by a gunman on her way back home from school in the Swat district in 2012. She was targetted for speaking out about the plight of girls in her region who were banned from going to school by the Taliban. She also never spoke against the human rights violations of Baloch people. People of Balochistan have raised the issue of their "annihilation" by the Pakistani forces at the forum of UNHRC also, but Malala did not extend any support to them. Malala has been very selective in condemning human rights abuses. Fearing the backlash, she does not speak against barbarities people have been facing in her own country. In her recent tweets on Kashmir issue, she reiterated Pakistan state narrative. Indian nationals firmly pointed out her hypocrisy, saying she is running Pakistan's agenda on Kashmir. Pakistan has been responding hysterically since the time Indian government scrapped Article 370 which gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir. Prime Minister Imran Khan and other ministers tried to portray a manipulated picture with false narratives, however, got no traction from global leaders. Even the Taliban has strongly criticised Pakistan for linking the Kashmir issue with the situation in Afghanistan. Instead of fighting a social media war with India and making embarrassing statements, Malala, Pakistani leaders and need to accept the reality on Kashmir and solve their own issues. On the eve of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?q=cricket+world+cup">Cricket World Cup 2019</a>, all captains of the participating nations paid a visit to Queen Elizabeth and Prince Harry at the Buckingham Palace in London.&nbsp;

The twelfth edition of World Cup, hosted by England and Wales, is scheduled to take place from May 30 to July 14.&nbsp;

Just after the visit, the opening ceremony held at the London Mall next to the Buckingham Palace in the presence of many cricketing legends like Viv Richards, Anil Kumble and Jacques Kallis.&nbsp;

During the event, a unique 60-second challenge was played in which all teams were given one minute to score the maximum runs.

Pakistan was represented by the Nobel peace prize winner Malala Yousafzai along with former cricketer Azhar Ali.&nbsp;

While Bollywood actor Farhan Akhtar and World Cup-winner Anil Kumble represented Team India.&nbsp;

England came out as the winners as they scored 74 in one minute whereas India finished at the bottom as they scored just 19.&nbsp;

After the game, Malala took a dig at India's performance, she said, "Pakistan, we were okay, not too bad. We came seventh. But at least we were not last like India."&nbsp;

"India played really well, they tried their best and we appreciate their hardwork," said the advocate of girl's education.&nbsp;

Although, her light-hearted comments were not taken sportingly and one of the Twitter users even said that the comment displayed "hate towards India".&nbsp;

Yousafzai further added the&nbsp;importance of women taking up cricket sports and urged that women must engage more in all types of sports.&nbsp;

"Right now were are seeing more and more women taking part in sporting activities," Yousafzai said.

"In Pakistan, we have some amazing cricketers, including Sana Mir. These role models are inspiring women to believe in themselves that they are capable of anything. Women should engage more in sports and we all have to contribute to that and encourage women and girls," she added.&nbsp;

Malala travelled the world and visited refugee camps — first as an internally displaced person when she was a young child in Pakistan, and then as an international activist who could travel anywhere in the world, except to the home she loved.

She chose to use the memories of that time in her life to connect with 68.5 million refugees and displaced persons around the world. And now she has come out with a book to "see them, to help them, to share their stories".

In "We are Displaced: My Journey and Stories from Refugee Girls Around the World", 21-year-old Malala not only explores her own story of adjusting to a new life while longing for home, but also shares the personal stories of some of the girls she has met on her various journeys — girls who have lost their community, relatives and often the only world they've ever known.

Malala was just 15 years old when she was shot by the Taliban on October 9, 2012, for speaking up for girls' education and peace.

Badly wounded, she was moved within Pakistan and then a week later, flown to Birmingham in the UK while still in an induced coma.

On March 31, 2018, she came back to Pakistan — to her home in the Swat Valley — for the first time after the attack.

"Pakistan has changed since I left. Population growth has led to congestion in some areas. There are many more houses and people in Swat than there were in 2012. But there is also more peace," she writes in the book, published by Weidenfeld &amp; Nicolson/Hachette India.

She says she stood on the side of a hill and looked across at the mountains where the Taliban once headquartered their forces in her area. "Now there are only trees and green fields."

But Malala, who won the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize jointly with Kailash Satyarthi "for their struggle against the suppression of children and young people and for the right of all children to education", feels there is much work to do in her country.

"Although I don't live there, it is still my country. It is never far from my thoughts or actions. My dream is to see all Pakistani children have access to 12 years of free, safe and quality education and working to build a great future for our country," she says.

In the book, Malala introduces some of the stories of displaced girls. After her father was murdered in the civil conflict in Columbia, Maria had to escape in the middle of the night with her four siblings and her mother who did not dare tell them she feared they would be next.

Zaynab was out of school for two years as she fled war in Yemen before finally landing in the US. Her sister, Sabreen, survived a harrowing journey from Egypt to Italy.

Marie Claire was nine when her family escaped the violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo. They fled to Zambia but quickly discovered that the people there did not want them.

Malala is the co-founder of Malala Fund which is working for a world where all girls can learn and lead. Malala Fund advocates for resources and policy change needed to give all girls a secondary education invests in developing country educators and activists and amplifies the voices of girls fighting for change.&nbsp;

For over 20 years, Ziauddin has been fighting for equality, first for Malala and then for all girls throughout the world living in patriarchal societies.

Taught as a young boy in Pakistan to believe that he was inherently better than his sisters, Ziauddin rebelled against inequality at a young age. And when he had a daughter himself he vowed that Malala would have an education, something usually only given to boys and he founded a school that she could attend.

Then in 2012, Malala was shot for standing up to the Taliban by continuing to go to her father's school and Ziauddin almost lost the very person for whom his fight for equality began.

Let Her Fly is Ziauddin's journey from a stammering boy growing up in a tiny village high in the mountains of Pakistan, through to being an activist for equality and the father of the youngest ever recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize and now one of the most influential and inspiring young women on the planet.

After her surprise return visit to Pakistan after five years, Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai on Monday left for Britain after an emotional four-day visit to Pakistan, officials said.

"Malala Yousafzai along with her family left Islamabad," a government official told AFP.

An airport official confirmed her departure.

Malala, 20, made her return visit more than five years after she was shot in the head by a Taliban gunman for advocating girls' education.

At a reception at the Prime Minister's Office last week, Malala tearfully said during a televised speech that it was "a dream" to finally return home&nbsp;

"Always it has been my dream that I should go to Pakistan... in peace and without any fear.

"And I think that it's my old home again ... so it is actually happening, and I am grateful to all of you."

Malala briefly visited her native Swat valley over the weekend during her first trip back to the once militant-infested region where she was targeted.

"I left Swat with my eyes closed and now I am back with my eyes open," she said, referring to how she was airlifted out in a coma after the attack in 2012.

"I am extremely delighted. My dream has come true. Peace has returned to Swat because of the invaluable sacrifices rendered by my brothers and sisters," she said at a school outside Mingora, the district's main town, where she was escorted by the Pakistani military.

The trip was a highly symbolic moment for Pakistan, which regularly touts Swat as a success story in its long battle with extremism as it defends itself against accusations by the US and others that its northwest remains a safe haven for militancy.

Malala has become a global symbol for human rights and a vocal campaigner for girls` education since leaving Pakistan.

She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014 and has continued her campaigning while pursuing her studies at Oxford University.

Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai says she has pined for her home in Pakistan's picturesque Swat Valley, even as she recalled two years living in fear under the Taliban's harsh interpretation of Islamic law.

Visiting her homeland for the first time since a Taliban gunman shot her in the head over her blog advocating girls'&nbsp;education, 20-year-old Yousafzai also contradicted Pakistani critics who accuse her of promoting an ideology at odds with the country's Islamic values.

"I am proud of my religion, and I am proud of my country," she told Reuters in an interview at her hotel on Friday.&nbsp;

Wearing a rose-printed headscarf and flowing tunic and trousers - one of many outfits family and friends brought her from Pakistan to Britain, where she is studying at Oxford University - Yousafzai said she was elated at being home.&nbsp;

"I had never been so excited for anything. I've never been so happy before," she said.

On Saturday, Yousafzai flew by helicopter to visit her childhood home in Swat Valley amid heavy security.

"I miss everything about Pakistan ... right from the rivers, the mountains, to even the dirty streets and the garbage around our house, and my friends and how we used to have gossip and talk about our school life, to how we used to fight with our neighbours."

She said she has wanted to return before but, aside from security concerns, there was the hectic pace of school and her entry exams to Oxford, where she began studying last year for a degree in politics, philosophy and economics.

Yousafzai's journey to becoming the youngest ever Nobel winner began with the local branch of the hardline Taliban movement taking over her hometown in Swat, about 250 km (160 miles) from the capital, Islamabad, in 2007, when she was 9 years old.

The Tehreek e Taliban Pakistan (TTP) banned television, music and girls'&nbsp;education, and burned about 200 schools, following the example of the 1990s Taliban government in neighbouring Afghanistan, which forcibly excluded women from nearly every aspect of public life.

"I still remember each and every moment, right from the fear while sleeping at night that you might not be alive the next day," Yousafzai said. "The fear that if you are going to school, someone might stop you and throw acid in your face."

Her father was a teacher in a school that educated girls and managed to stay open until early 2009.&nbsp;

After the Pakistani army drove out the Taliban in mid-2009 she became a symbol for girls'&nbsp;education through a blog she wrote for the BBC's Urdu service, which started while the Taliban were still in power, and a documentary "Class Dismissed", that profiled her.

It made her a target. In 2012, a masked gunman boarded her school bus, singled her out and shot her. The Taliban later said it had carried out the attack for her promotion of liberalism.

She was flown to Britain for surgery and has remained abroad since, co-writing a best-selling book "I Am Malala" and starting a foundation advocating girls'&nbsp;education worldwide. 
In 2014 she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, along with an Indian activist.

Polarizing figure

Though she is perhaps the world's best-known Pakistani, Yousafzai - known almost universally as just "Malala" - is polarizing figure at home, beloved by many but reviled by others.

A group of private schools in Pakistan declared Friday to be "I Am Not Malala Day", for what its spokesman described as her "anti-Islam and anti-Pakistan ideology". That description puzzles Malala.

"I just don't know anything I've said that makes me anti-Pakistan or anti-Islam," she said. "Islam has taught me the importance of peace. Islam has taught me the importance of education. The first word of Islam, or the first word of the Koran, is 'Iqra'&nbsp;which means 'read'."

Government commitment to education was one of the subjects of her meeting on Thursday with Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, whose government, along with the army, helped arrange her trip, including providing security.

"We did talk about education and I appreciated what he has done, but I think there is a lot more that needs to be done. The government promised 4 percent of GDP for education but only so far has increased it to 2.7," she said.

Meetings with the prime minister - as well as other world leaders - might seem a far cry from a schoolgirl's life in the Swat Valley, but Malala said some aspects of her life, like attending Oxford, were longtime dreams.

"My initial plan was that I would continue my education, I would continue speaking out for the girls who cannot go to school ... and one day once I finish my secondary education, I will apply to Oxford," she said.

Yousafzai, travelling with her father and younger brother, met Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi in the capital, Islamabad, before giving a brief speech on national television.

It was Yousafzai's first visit to her homeland since she was shot in late 2012 and airlifted abroad for medical treatment.&nbsp;

"For last five years I have dreamed that I can set foot in my country," she said, wiping away tears

"It's the happiest day of my life. I still can't believe it's happening," added Yousafzai, clad in a traditional shalwar kameez outfit with her head covered with a red and blue dupatta scarf. 
She said that if it had been up to her, she would never have left Pakistan.

"I don`t normally cry ... I`m still 20 years old but I`ve seen so many things in life," she said.

At the age of 17, in 2014, Yousafzai became the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize for her education advocacy. She also became a global symbol of the resilience of women in the face of repression.

Yousafzai spoke of the importance of education and about the efforts of her charitable foundation to help girls, often switching between English and the Pashto and Urdu languages.

"Welcome home," Prime Minister Abbasi told Yousafzai.&nbsp;

"We are very happy that our daughter has come back. When she went away, she was a child of 12. She has returned as the most prominent citizen of Pakistan "

But she is unlikely to travel to her home region of Swat, in the mountains northwest of Islamabad, due to security threats against her, a relative and security sources told.

"It's been the long-held desire of Malala Yousafzai and her parents to visit Swat and see her relatives and friends. But she was not given permission due to security concerns," said one relative, who declined to be identified.

Earlier, Pakistan's Geo TV showed footage of Yousafzai after she arrived at Islamabad airport, walking to a car escorted by security officials.

In October 2012, masked gunmen stopped a bus taking Malala and other girls home from school and shot her. Two of her friends were also wounded.

Last week, on Twitter, Yousafzai, who lives in Britain and is studying at Oxford University, expressed a longing for her homeland.

"On this day, I cherish fond memories of home, of playing cricket on rooftops and singing the national anthem in school. Happy Pakistan Day!" she wrote on March 23.

After surviving the attack, Yousafzai was airlifted abroad and underwent surgery.&nbsp;

The Pakistani Taliban, who seized control of her home district in Pakistan's Swat Valley before being pushed out by the army in 2009, claimed the attack, saying it was in response to a blog she wrote for the BBC Urdu service advocating girls' education.

The hardline Islamist movement blew up girls' schools and imposed a strict interpretation of sharia Islamic law during their rule over Swat.

Unable to return to Pakistan after her recovery, Yousafzai stayed in Britain, setting up the Malala Fund and supporting education advocacy groups with a focus on Pakistan, Nigeria, Jordan, Syria and Kenya.

This month, a new girls' school built with her Nobel prize money opened in Shangla, near her home district of Swat.

During her trip to Pakistan, which is expected to last several days, Yousafzai will likely stay in Islamabad and meet friends and family at a hotel, her relatives said.

The US State Department placed a $5 million reward for help locating the leader of the Pakistani Taliban on Thursday, linked to bloody attacks in Pakistan and the 2010 attempted Times Square car bombing in New York.

It also offered $3 million each for two other Islamic militants associated with the TTP: Abdul Wali, leader of Jamaat ul-Ahrar, and Mangal Bagh, the leader of Lashkar-e-Islam.

The State Department said the TTP has &quot;demonstrated a close alliance with al-Qaeda&quot; and the three pose a threat to the security of the United States.

According to US officials, TTP gave explosives training to Faisal Shahzad, who failed in his attempt to set off a car bomb in Times Square in May 2010.

The group was behind the massacre of more than 150 people at a Peshawar school in December 2014, and nine dead in another attack in December 2017 in the same city.

It was also responsible for the October 2012 shooting of Malala Yousafzai, who became a global symbol of the fight for girls&#39; rights to schooling.&nbsp;

In January a US drone strike killed Khalid Mehsood, the TTP deputy leader, the group said.

In a separate move, the State Department also added two members of the Kenya arm of the violent al-Shabaab extremist group to its list of &quot;specially designated global terrorists&quot;: Ahmad Iman Ali and Abdifatah Abubakar Abdi.

Both are tied to deadly attacks in the country.
