<p>National Democratic Alliance (NDA) nominee Birla was elected as the Lok Sabha speaker after a motion moved by PM Modi was adopted through voice votes.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Pro-tem Speaker B Mahtab made the announcement after the opposition, which had proposed Congress MP Suresh as its candidate, did not press for votes to the motion.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I announce Om Birla elected as the speaker," Mahtab said.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Om&nbsp;Birla's second consecutive term</strong>&nbsp;</h2>

<p>Birla gets a second consecutive term in the chair, the fifth time that a speaker will serve beyond the tenure of one Lok Sabha. It is also among the few occasions that an election became necessary for a post conventionally decided by consensus.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In his address, Modi said Birla's work as a parliamentarian should be an inspiration for new Lok Sabha members.</p>

<p>"It is a matter of honour that you have been elected to this chair for a second time," the prime minister said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I congratulate you on behalf of the entire House and look forward to your guidance for next five years," he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi&nbsp;courted fresh controversy on Tuesday (June 25) as he made a mention of conflict-hit Palestine while concluding his oath as Lok Sabha MP.</p>

<p>Owaisi, who has been elected from the Hyderabad seat in Telangana for his fifth consecutive term, took the oath in Urdu and said, "Jai Bhim, Jai Meem, Jai Telangana, Jai Palestine", hailing the state of Telangana, Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar and Palestine that is facing a war with Israel after Hamas' assault on October 7 last year.</p>

<p>Following this, the treasury benches created an uproar which led to the Chair expunging his remarks from the record.</p>

<p>Radha Mohan Singh, who was in the Chair at the time, assured the members that anything apart from the oath will not go on record.</p>

<p>Pro-tem Speaker Bhartruhari Mahtab said that any of the slogans raised by the newly-elected MPs while taking the oath stand expunged and will not be added to the record.</p>

<p>RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, in his first public remarks after the results of the Lok Sabha elections 2024, on Monday (June 10) said that a true sevak (those who serve the people) does not have “ahankar” (arrogance) and does his/her work without hurting others.</p>

<p>While commenting on the bitter poll campaign, Bhagwat said “decorum was not maintained”.</p>

<p>While speaking at a gathering of RSS leaders and workers, after the culmination of Karyakarta Vikas Varg, Bhagwat emphasised the importance of building consensus.</p>

<p>“Jo vastavik sevak hai, jisko vastavik sevak kaha ja sakta hai, woh maryada se chalta hai… Uss maryada ka paalan karke jo chalta hai woh karm karta hai lekin karmon mein lipt nahi hota. Usme ahankar nahin aata ki maine kiya. Aur wahi sevak kehlane ka adhikari rehta hai (A true sevak maintains decorum while working… The one who maintains decorum does his work, but remains unattached. There is no arrogance that I did this. Only such a person has the right to be called a sevak),” Bhagwat said.</p>

If we understand that this is how we must operate, then we must be cognizant of the decorum required in contesting elections. That decorum was not maintained.”</p>

<p>India has always shown its desire to share cordial relations with Pakistan while emphasising the onus of creating an environment which is free of terror and hostility lies on Islamabad.</p>

Pakistan holds back from congratulating Modi on his third tenure as India's PM, calls it 'premature' talks

<p>"Detailed statistical reports having the number of postal votes and Gross voter turnout will be made available on the ECI website after finalisation of details, as received from States/UTs in due course as per standard practice. Postal Ballots include postal ballots given to service voters, absentee voters (85+, PwD, Essential Services etc.) and voters on election duty," it said.</p>

<p>Earlier, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar said that India had achieved a milestone by registering a remarkable turnout of 64.2 crore voters in the 18th Lok Sabha polls.</p>

<p>"We have created a world record of 642 million voters. This is a historic moment for all of us. This is 1.5 times the voters of all G7 countries and 2.5 times the voters of 27 countries in the European Union (EU). We thank each and everyone who took part in this festival of democracy. The Indian elections are indeed a miracle. Having no parallel in the world," Kumar said.</p>

<p>CEC further said that this time 312 million women cast their vote, which&nbsp;was 1.25 times the women voters of 27 EU countries in their previous national elections.</p>

<p>Sheikh Abdul Rashid also known as Engineer Rashid has been a former MLA from the Langate assembly seat of North Kashmir's Kupwara district. Engineer won the assembly seat twice in a row and headed a party with the name&nbsp;Awami Ittehad Party. Engineer has been languishing in the Jail since 2019. He is booked by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in a terror funding case and has been lodged in Tihar Jail in Delhi. He is the first mainstream politician to be arrested under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.&nbsp;</p>

<p>At the time when Engineer was an elected MLA from the Langate assembly seat, he was&nbsp;considered a separatist sympathiser.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, Omar Abdullah conceded his defeat on social media to Engineer on the day of election results after trailing by a huge margin.</p>

<p>''I think it’s time to accept the inevitable. Congratulations to Engineer Rashid for his victory in North Kashmir. I don’t believe his victory will hasten his release from prison nor will the people of North Kashmir get the representation they have a right to, but the voters have spoken and in a democracy that’s all that matters," he said on X.</p>

<p>Omar also took to social media today and shared a quote from a story that&nbsp;read, ''Rashid’s victory, without doubt, will empower secessionists, and give Kashmir’s defeated Islamist movement a renewed sense of hope. Efforts to draw secessionism back into electoral politics led New Delhi to support the rise of the People’s Democratic Party, and its alliance with the BJP. That, however, ended up empowering violent secessionists, not mainstreaming them—a warning of the unpredictable outcomes of trying to manipulate politics.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>Although these were not Omar Abdullah's words, sharing them on social media today meant nothing but the endorsement of the same thoughts.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Another Surprise was Independent Candidate Haji Haneefa Jan, who won the Ladakh Parliamentary seat. Haji was associated with the National Conference earlier and was the district president of the same party in Ladakh. He decided to go solo in this parliamentary election as the INDIA alliance fielded Namgyal as their candidate. The Kargil Unit of the National Conference had resigned en masse after Namgyal was fielded as their candidate.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In 2023, Haneefa lost the Kargil Elections for the Barro Constituency in the LAHDC Kargil by a mere 66 votes. And after Omar Abdullah decided to field a different candidate from the Ladakh seat, Haji decided to quit and fight solo.</p>

It is said that all these incidents together played a major role in Haji's win.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This was in addition to Gandhi's impressive win in Uttar Pradesh's Rae Bareli where he currently holds&nbsp;the highest winning margin in the state. According to Election Commission data, Gandhi defeated BJP's Dinesh Pratap Singh by 390,030 votes.</p>

<h2><strong>Gandhi says 'haven't decided yet' on which seat to retain</strong></h2>

<p>The Congress leader in a press briefing after winning both seats said that he is yet to finalise his decision on which constituency to retain.</p>

<p>"I have won from Rae Bareli and Wayanad and I thank the voters. I need to decide which seat I will retain. I haven't decided yet," Gandhi said.</p>

<p>"The people of UP understood the politics of the country and the danger to the Constitution, and they safeguarded the Constitution. I want to thank all the states but I would especially thank Uttar Pradesh. I thank them for supporting the Congress party and the INDIA alliance," he added.</p>

<p>One setback for BJP was its lack of alliance with the AIADMK. The exit polls released on June 1 projected that the BJP would be able to open its account in Tamil Nadu by securing four seats, however results showed a decisive victory for the DMK.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As the Lok Sabha elections demonstrated unexpected results for the BJP, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi hit out at the saffron party stating that the people of India were not impressed by how Prime Minister Modi and Amit Shah ran the country and that the mandate had gone against the Indian PM.</p>

<p>He further accused the Indian prime minister of capturing central probe agencies like the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED).</p>

<p>"We fought this election not just against BJP but also the institutions, the governance structure of the country, the intelligence agencies CBI &amp; ED, judiciary because all these institutions were captured by Amit Shah &amp; Narendra Modi ji," Gandhi said while addressing a press conference on Tuesday (June 4).</p>

<p>Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge claimed that PM Modi would attack the Constitution and democracy in his term.</p>

<p>"People realised that if PM Modi gets another term, the next attack will be on the Constitution and democracy of the country. It is fortunate that the BJP won't succeed in their purpose now," Kharge said.</p>

<p>Gandhi defeated BJP's Dinesh Pratap Singh by 3,90,030 votes in Rae Bareli.</p>

Lok Sabha elections 2024: Congress wins seven seats in Punjab

<p>In the latest development from Punjab, the son of one of prime minister Indira Gandhi's assassins, Sarabjeet Singh Khalsa, won the Faridkot Lok Sabha seat.</p>

<p>He contested the elections as an independent candidate.</p>

<p>Sarabjeet Singh won the electoral contest by a margin of 70,053 votes, defeating his rival, the Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP)&nbsp;Karamjit Singh Anmol.</p>

<p>Sarabjeet polled 2,98,062 votes, while Karamjit got 2,28,009.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Congress candidate Amarjit Kaur Sahoke remained at the third spot with 2,08,889 votes, whereas Shiromani Akali Dal's Rajwinder Singh Dharamkot received 1,38,251.</p>

<p>The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had fielded singer and MP from North West Delhi, Hans Raj Hans from the constituency, who stood fifth in the list with 1,23,533 votes.</p>

Congress candidate Amarjit Kaur Sahoke remained at the third spot with 2,08,889 votes, whereas Shiromani Akali Dal's Rajwinder Singh Dharamkot received 1,38,251. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had fielded singer and MP from North West Delhi, Hans Raj Hans from the constituency, who stood fifth in the list with 1,23,533 votes.
