Walt Disney Co's live-action remake of "Mulan" opened on Thursday (September 17) to a lacklustre reception in Hong Kong, where pro-democracy activists have been leading calls to boycott the movie.

As the world crushed over trailer teaser a couple of weeks ago, makers of Disney’s live-action remake of 1998 animated movie, ‘Mulan’ is now out with the first full-length trailer of the film.&nbsp;

Starring Chinese-born actress Liu Yifei in the titular role, ‘Mulan’ is the story of a woman warrior joining the Imperial Army as a boy after her father couldn’t join because of an ailment.&nbsp;

The trailer gives a detailer into Mulan’s backstory -- her ailing father, family and her family’s pride. The trailer, however, focuses on Mulan’s battles more than anything else. You will see her loyalty, bravery and much more!

The trailer also gives a preview of ‘Mulan’’s villain, a mysterious witch named Xian Lang -- essayed by Gong Li.&nbsp;

The film, Mulan’s official synopsis is as such: When the Emperor of China issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army to defend the country from Northern invaders, Hua Mulan, the eldest daughter of an honoured warrior, steps in to take the place of her ailing father. Masquerading as a man, Hua Jun, she is tested every step of the way and must harness her inner-strength and embrace her true potential. It is an epic journey that will transform her into an honoured warrior and earn her the respect of a grateful nation…and a proud father.&nbsp;

Disney film ‘Mulan’ also features Donnie Yen, Jason Scott Lee, Yoson An, Gong Li and Jet Li.&nbsp;

'Mulan' trailer: Liu Yifei shines in titular role in Disney's live-action remake

This is probably the first time that any Disney film has received so much support from Chinese state media as hashtag #BoycottMulan trended throughout the day on Twitter.&nbsp;

Hundreds of people started posting for their friends to boycott the film after the movie’s lead actress, Liu Yifei, a Chinese-born actress took a controversial stand on the ongoing Hong Kong protests that have been all over the media for some weeks now. Liu got herself into the Hong Kong controversy as she pledged support for the Hong Kong police who anti-government demonstrators accuse of using excessive force to quell unrest.

She posted on Weibo, "I support the Hong Kong police. You can all attack me now. What a shame for Hong Kong.”

Soon after the post went viral, people started #BoycottMulan. Hours later, it trended in Hong Kong and the United States. The platform is banned in China.&nbsp;

Twitter users accused the actress of supporting police brutality and noted that she's an American citizen. "Liu is a naturalized American citizen. It must be nice. Meanwhile, she pisses on people fighting for democracy," one person tweeted.

It was, however, a different story in China as the state media has offered her support. China's state-run tabloid Global Times published a report against the boycott, accusing those who tweeted in support of it of "launching cyber violence against people who supports China." It is also on Twitter, being one of several state-run outlets maintaining a major presence. It called boycotters of the film on twitter as "ideological paranoids" and included its own hashtag #SupportMulan.
