Lionel Messi was on target as world champions Argentina turned on the style to beat Canada 2-0 on Tuesday and reach the Copa America final where they will look for a third straight major title.

The defending Copa champions will face the winners of Wednesday's semi-final between Uruguay and Colombia in what will be a highly anticipated final in Miami on Sunday.

The 15-times Copa champions produced their best display of the tournament in front of a capacity crowd at the 82,500 MetLife Stadium and as in their 2022 World Cup triumph they look to be peaking at the perfect moment.

"The truth is that it's crazy what this group has done, what the Argentina national team has been doing," Messi told TyC Sports after his first goal of the tournament.

"It's not easy for us to be in a final again, for us to compete again to be champions. I'm living it like I lived it in the last Copa America, in the last World Cup...These are the last battles and I'm enjoying them to the maximum," said the 37-year-old.

Canada, who surprised many by reaching the last four in their first Copa America appearance, can take great credit for their run in the tournament but Messi and company were simply a step too far.

"I think the tournament caught up with us a little bit," said Canada's American coach Marsch, who said he noticed that his players looked tired midway through the first half.

"Eventually the physicality and fatigue can catch up with you and that was a big part of what happened with us tonight," he added.

Marsch's side had progressed by hitting teams with high-energy football straight out of the gate but after an early opening for left-winger Jacob Shaffelburg, who fired wide after cutting in from the flank, the South Americans took control and never gave it up.

Angel Di Maria, the veteran wide-man playing in his final tournament for his country, was seeing plenty of the ball down the right and he offered an early warning of his threat when he picked out Messi with a ball inside which the forward flashed just wife of the post.

But it was Rodrigo De Paul who was to create the breakthrough in the 22nd minute, picking the ball up on the half-way line, taking a quick glance up and then lofting the ball over the top to Julian Alvarez.

The Manchester City forward, recalled to the starting line-up ahead of Lautaro Martinez, delivered a deft first touch that took him away from Moises Bombito and gave him just enough room to drive the ball home.

<h2>Classy triangle</h2>

The classy triangle of Di Maria, Messi and De Paul, was a constant source of danger for Canada's back line and the former threatened a second with a chip from the right which floated over the bar.

The assuredness of Argentina's build-up play reflects the confidence of coach Lionel Scaloni's team, a well-drilled unit but one that never allows their organisational solidity dominate over their creativity.

Two minutes before the break, former Real Madrid winger Di Maria provided a slide-rule pass to Messi, who worked himself space for a shot on his right-foot, but he was narrowly wide of Max Crepeau's right-hand post.

Canada's American coach Marsch had plenty of work to do at the interval if he was to find a way of getting his team back on level terms and any strategy went out of the window when the world champions doubled their lead, just six minutes after the restart.

The excellent De Paul pulled the ball back from the byline to Enzo Fernandez and his side-foot shot was directed home by Messi in front of goal.

For a moment Canada had hope that Messi may have been offside but the VAR review showed that defender Derek Cornelius had played him onside.

The two-goal cushion established, Argentina were content to sit back and preserve their energy and invite the Canadians to take them on.

It was not until the final minutes though that Canada were able to trouble Emiliano Martinez with substitute Tani Oluwaseyi forcing the keeper into action after some sloppy defending.

But it was a comfortable victory for Scaloni's men and one which leaves them one win away from a record 16th Copa America triumph.

Watch: Messi's paneka penalty goes wrong in Argentina's win vs Ecuador to reach Copa America semis

Lionel Messi's fitness remains in doubt ahead of Thursday's Copa America quarter-final with Ecuador with coach Lionel Scaloni saying he will wait before deciding on his team.

Messi missed Argentina's final group stage match on Saturday, a 2-0 win over Peru, after complaining of a sore right hamstring.

Argentina will hold a training session later on Wednesday and Scaloni said he would make any decision afterwards.

"We'll wait a couple of hours and make the decision. It is always better to have one more day," he told a press conference. "Yesterday we had good feelings and we'll take this day to define the team based on the response we get today," he added.

Scaloni said he would consult with the 37-year-old Messi about his readiness for the game.

"We'll try to get him in and then, if he's not (ready), we'll look for the best solution for the team. I'll talk to him today. I think it's fair that he takes his time and trains as much as possible," he said.

Scaloni made nine changes against Peru as he took the chance to rotate his squad with qualification to the knockout stage already secured.

Should Messi not be ready to start against Ecuador, Scaloni could start with both Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez as twin strikers in attack.

Lautaro is the top scorer in the Copa so far with four goals from three games, including a double against Peru while Alvarez found the target in the opening game against Canada.

"They have already played together against this rival. We will make the decision after today's training session. We are not ruling anything out because they have worked well and it is an option, it could be," said Scaloni.

"Lautaro is doing very well, in a good moment, the same as Julian. Lautaro has not only done well, but he has waited for his chance and that makes me very happy. They both scored goals, let's hope that streak continues tomorrow. We are satisfied with their contributions," he said.

Ecuador coach Felix Sanchez said he doesn't expect a radical change of approach from&nbsp; Argentina -- with or without Messi.

"We know we are playing a high level team, Lionel Messi is the player that makes the difference and we have played against them with him and without him on the field," he said.

"Their gameplan doesn't change much - they are a group who have been with their head coach for a long time, they know their gameplan and we have had to be ready either way," added the Spaniard.

Lionel Messi doubtful for Argentina’s QF clash against Ecuador in Copa America, says coach

Argentina shrugged off the injury absence of Lionel Messi to maintain their perfect start at the Copa America on Saturday with a 2-0 victory over Peru in Miami. Lautaro Martinez scored twice at the Hard Rock Stadium to seal a win that ensured Argentina advance to the quarter-finals as Group A winners.

With Messi sidelined after complaining of a sore right hamstring, and coach Lionel Scaloni serving a one-game suspension, Argentina made nine changes to their starting XI at the Hard Rock Stadium.

But despite the makeshift-looking line-up, Argentina were always in control against a disappointing Peru side who managed just one shot on goal during a one-sided encounter.

Martinez's first goal came just after half-time. A sublime through ball from Angel Di Maria released the Inter Milan forward, who calmly lifted a deft finish over advancing Peru goalkeeper Pedro Gallese.

Argentina had a chance to double their lead in the 72nd minute after Jesus Castillo handled in the area to concede a penalty.

But Leandro Paredes crashed his ensuing spot-kick against the woodwork to leave the score at 1-0.

Martinez then grabbed a second in the 86th minute, latching on to a long pass forward before finishing past Gallese.

Replays indicated Martinez appeared to shove defender Aldo Corzo in the build-up but referee Cesar Ramos waved Peru's protest and the goal stood.

"It was tough in the first half because they were defending deep, but the first goal opened up the game," Martinez said afterwards. "There's a lot more to come from us."

Martinez has now scored in four consecutive appearances for Argentina and is relishing his hot streak.

"Every time I put on this shirt, every training session, every meal, every team talk, I enjoy it," Martinez said.

Argentina will now face the runner-up from Group B in the quarter-finals in Houston next Thursday, most likely either Ecuador or Mexico.

In Saturday's other Group A game, Canada held 2015 and 2016 Copa America champions Chile to a 0-0 draw in Orlando, which was enough to see the Canadians into the last eight.

Chile needed a victory to leapfrog the Canadians into the knockout rounds but were left with a mountain to climb early in the game when Gabriel Suazo was dismissed for a second yellow card after only 27 minutes.

"It took a lot of hard work -- it's our first time in this competition and it's not easy," Canada captain Alphonso Davies said about his team's advance to the last eight. "There's a lot of good teams in this competition and a lot of good players. But we stuck to our plan and we played well. We showed a lot of fight. We had to show our teeth at times, but overall, we did well."

Lautaro Martinez hits brace against Peru as Messi-less Argentina advances to Copa America QFs

Lionel Messi will miss Argentina's final Copa America group game against Peru after complaining of muscle tightness, team officials said on Friday.

Assistant coach Walter Samuel told a press conference that the Inter Miami superstar was "day-by-day" following an injury to his right adductor muscle.

"Leo had a problem in the last game, he won't be there for this game," Samuel said. "We are going to go day-by-day waiting for its evolution."

Samuel, meanwhile, played down the impact of Messi's absence on the rest of the team.

"The team has always proven to be up to the task before when he wasn't there," said Samuel, hinting that veteran Angel Di Maria may start in place of Messi.

Argentina have already booked their place in the quarter-finals after wins against Canada and Chile in their opening two matches.

A draw in Saturday's game against Peru at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami will guarantee Argentina qualify for the last eight as group winners.

Argentina is expected to rest several first-choice players against Peru, although Samuel insisted on Friday the world champions would seek a win.

"Peru has top players; we are taking this game with the utmost seriousness," said Samuel, who will be in charge on the bench with coach Lionel Scaloni serving a one-game suspension.

Scaloni and Argentina were sanctioned after the team were late to emerge for the second half in their games against Chile and Canada.

Samuel said Scaloni was "a little bitter" about the suspension.

Copa America 2024: Argentina's Lionel Messi to miss Peru game, team officials confirm

Argentina captain Lionel Messi missed training on Thursday afternoon due to muscle pain, while his presence in their final Copa America group-stage game against Peru remains in doubt.

Defending champions Argentina trained at the Miami International University sports ground without Messi, who underwent medical tests and kinesiology sessions, according to Argentine media reports.

Messi, who turned 37 this week and has been suffering muscle niggles, required brief medical treatment on his thigh during Argentina's 1-0 victory over Chile on Monday at the U.S.-hosted tournament.

The Inter Miami player said it might be wiser to sit out the Peru game on Saturday with his team already qualified for the next round after two wins.

"My adductor got a bit stiff and I couldn't stay loose, it was bothering me a little bit, but I was able to finish the game, so I'll see how it evolves over the next few days," Messi said after Monday's win.

The Argentine Football Association did not give a medical update on the forward's fitness. Defender Marcos Acuna also suffered a muscle injury during training in Miami.

Copa America 2024: Lionel Messi misses Argentina training due to muscle injury

Substitute Lautaro Martinez grabbed an 88th-minute winner as Argentina finally overcame Chile 1-0 to book their place in the quarter-finals of the Copa America on Tuesday.

Lionel Messi hit the post for Argentina in the first half but the World Cup winners had their goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez to thank for keeping them on level terms before Lautaro's late strike settled a pulsating clash in front of 82,000 fans at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

There were enough openings for the 15-times Copa America champions to get the breakthrough much earlier but a combination of poor finishing and an inspired performance from Chile's 41-year-old goalkeeper Claudio Bravo left the scored deadlocked.

The home of the NFL's New York Jets and New York Giants -- and venue for the 2026 World Cup final -- was transformed into a home venue for Argentina and the expectant crowd saw Messi and company dictate proceedings in the early stages.

Messi's strike partner Julian Alvarez forced Bravo into a save in the 22nd minute with a first-time shot after Nicolas Gonzalez had pulled the ball back from the byline.

Chile were doing a good job of neutralising Messi, closing him down with three players on occassions but the eight-times Ballon d'Or winner was inches away from an opener in the 36th minute with a shot from 25 yards out which clipped the outside of the post.

Bravo did well after the break to parry out a blast at the near post from Nahuel Molina and then showed great reactions to push a fierce Nicolas Gonzalez drive against the bar.

Chile threatened on the counter though and twice Emiliano Martinez had to be at his best to deny drives from Rodrigo Echeverria.

But the decisive moment came when Chile failed to clear an in-swinging corner from Messi and Lautaro Martinez pounced to grab the winner.

<h2>Canada down Peru</h2>

Lautaro should have added a second after a breakaway from Angel Di Maria but in the end the solitary goal was enough to make it two wins out of two for the World Cup winners and book their place in the next round with a game to spare.

In other Copa America action on Tuesday,Jonathan David scored the only goal as Canada reignited their campaign with a 1-0 victory over Peru in sweltering Kansas City.

Lille striker David – who is reportedly being targeted by Premier League sides Manchester United and Chelsea – once again demonstrated his eye for goal with a cool finish to secure all three points for Canada against 10-man Peru at the Children's Mercy Park Stadium.

A game played in scorching afternoon sunshine – with on-pitch temperatures nudging towards 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius) – saw one of the two referee's assistants collapse with apparent heat exhaustion just before half-time.

Canada, beaten 2-0 by Argentina in the opening game of the tournament last week, took the lead in the second half after Peru had been reduced to 10 men following the dismissal of Miguel Araujo for a wild foul on substitute Jacob Shaffelburg that sparked a melee amongst players from both teams.

Referee Mario Escobar initially only gave Araujo a yellow card for his ugly studs up challenge on Shaffelburg but the punishment was upgraded after a VAR review.

That dismissal tipped a close game in favour of Canada and the breakthrough finally came on 74 minutes with David's goal from a sweeping Canada counter-attack.

Left-winger Shaffelburg played a sensational first-time cross-field pass to David, who took one touch without breaking stride and then buried a right-foot finish into the bottom corner past Peru goalkeeper Pedro Gallese.

Peru pressed forward in search of an equalizer, but Canada goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau denied Christian Cueva with a fine one-handed reflex save to parry away a volley before saving Paolo Guerrero's injury-time free-kick.

Substitute Lautaro Martinez grabbed an 88th-minute winner as Argentina finally overcame Chile 1-0 to book their place in the quarter-finals of the Copa America on Tuesday.

Copa America 2024: Lautaro Martinez's late strike sends Argentina into quarterfinal

Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez is back to his old ways of feuding with the opposition players and fans. After Argentina scored a late winner to clinch the Copa America tie against Chile, Martinez turned towards the Chilean fans and taunted them by standing on the advertising hoarding.&nbsp;

The World Cup champions had a hard time breaking down the Chilean defence at the MetLife Stadium on Tuesday night (Jun 25). However, Inter Milan's Lautaro Martinez came in clutch in the 88th minute and ensured that Argentina qualified to the next round of the continental tournament.&nbsp;

While the Argentina outfield players celebrated in a heap, Martinez ran behind his goalpost, much to the chagrin of Chilean fans who could be seen flipping him off.&nbsp;

Lionel Messi has opened up on the playing style of Pep Guardiola amid criticism from a section of the fans that the former Barcelona manager had killed the instinctive nature of footballers.

Lionel Messi has opened up on the playing style of Pep Guardiola amid criticism from a section of the fans that the former Barcelona manager had killed the instinctive nature of footballers. Guardiola managed Messi for four seasons between 2008 and 2012 where the star attacker achieved new heights in his professional career. The Guardiola-Messi combination weaved magic for the La Liga giants as the club won 14 titles during that time which includes three La Ligas and two Champions League titles. Messi is currently in the US for the title defence of Copa America as Argentina started off the campaign with a convincing win against Canada. Ahead of the second match against, Messi, in an extraordinary interview, shed light on Guardiola's philosophy. "The Guardiola era has caused a bit of confusion. Everyone wants to play like that now," Messi explained. "They tell six/seven-year-olds to play with two touches, quickly. At that age, what happened with me needs to happen for these kids... we shouldn’t take away their spontaneity," he added. The statement from Messi is rare and it is widely believed that Guardiola played a major role in shaping the career of the Argentine. It was under Guardiola that Messi aced the 'false 9' role and went on to score 91 goals during the 2021 calendar year. Also read | Lionel Messi reveals why he doesn't speak English despite 'understanding everything' Guardiola's playing style Guardiola is known for his possession-based football where the emphasis is on retaining the ball and moving the opposition so that half-spaces open up, allowing the attackers to meticulously put the ball to the back of the net. However, the style, often takes out the fluidity and creativity of the players who are forced to operate in a certain way. The top teams of the past relied on 'off-the-cuff' movements and creativity of the players but there is a growing notion that Guardiola often stifles such ingenuity. This is not to say that Guardiola's tactics have not evolved over time. At Manchester City, the possession-based game is married to counter-pressing which the Spaniard may have learnt from his rival and former Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp. The style may have its critics but it has helped Guardiola become one of the best managers on the planet. He managed to win four consecutive Premier League titles with Man City last month, on the back of a historical treble campaign in the 22-23 season. (With inputs from agencies)

"It is going to be very level, all the teams are complicated. Ecuador has a generation of very good youngsters, who know well what they want, they are intense with the ball, they are clear about what they do and they are physically strong. And like them, you also have Colombia, Uruguay, not to mention Brazil. Türkiye started their Euro 2024 campaign with a dramatic 3-1 win over Georgia in what fans described as the most thrilling match of the tournament so far. At the age of 14 in 2019,&nbsp;Türkiyeish side&nbsp;Fenerbahçe came calling for Güler and brought him to the club. The youngster's capability of dribbling in tight spaces coupled with his tendency to cut inside from the right wing onto his left foot naturally drew comparisons to Messi.

The teenager quickly delighted the first-team manager at the club while still being with the U19. Impressed with his performances,&nbsp;Güler was given his&nbsp;Fenerbahçe senior debut when just 16 years and 174 days old in a Europa League qualification match.

Messi, originally from Argentina, spent the majority of his formative and playing career in Spain where Spanish is the preferred language. However, since moving to the Major League Soccer (MLS) in the US, Messi has been seen speaking more and more English. Quizzed during a press conference about his English-speaking skills, Messi admitted that he could speak the language properly but felt 'embarrassed' about it. “I understand everything, or almost everything in English. But out of embarrassment I don't speak - but I think I can actually," said Messi. The Inter Miami star was recently seen in a promotional video for the latest Bad Boys film starring Will Smith. Messi showed off his English skills in the video which instantly went viral all across social media. Lionel Messi reveals why he doesn't speak English despite 'understanding everything'

Lionel Messi scored twice as Argentina wrapped up their preparations for the Copa America with a 4-1 friendly victory over Guatemala in Maryland on Friday.

Messi grabbed an early equaliser and then dinked in Argentina's fourth as the world champions came from behind in what was their final game before they launch the defence of their Copa America crown against Canada in Atlanta next Thursday.

Guatemala took a shock lead after only four minutes at Commanders Field in Landover when a free-kick from Oscar Santis from wide on the left sowed confusion in the Argentina defence.

Santis's cross bobbled across the six-yard box and ended with Manchester United's Lisandro Martinez scooping an attempted clearance into his net for an own goal.

But Argentina did not have to wait long to get back on level terms and equalised in the 12th minute after a disastrous blunder by Guatemala goalkeeper Nicholas Hagen.

Under no real pressure, Hagen screwed an attempted clearance from a back pass straight to an unmarked Messi in the middle of the penalty area.

The Argentina captain duly took full advantage of his gift-wrapped opportunity, taking a touch and coolly tucking away his 107th international goal.

Thereafter it was a question of when not if Argentina would add their second, with Guatemala sitting deep and inviting pressure.

Argentina eventually took the lead from the penalty spot on 39 minutes after Guatemala defender Nicolas Samayoa chopped down Valentin Carboni after the 19-year-old forward darted to the byline.

Messi elected to pass up the opportunity of the spot-kick, and instead it was Lautaro Martinez who stepped up to fire home the penalty and make it 2-1.

Argentina almost extended their lead on the stroke of half-time when Messi crashed a low rasping free-kick from the edge of the area against the inside of the post.

Lautaro Martinez's overhead kick from the rebound also hit the woodwork, and although Lisandro Martinez bundled the loose ball into the net, the Manchester United defender was ruled offside.

The Argentines made it 3-1 on 66 minutes with a fine team goal.

Lionel Messi hits brace in Argentina’s 4-1 win over Guatemala in Copa America friendly

World Cup winner with Argentina, Lionel Messi, has turned down the chance to return to Paris, France, for the 2024 Olympic Games, starting July 26. Representing Argentina in the Copa America, Messi said playing back-to-back mega tournaments at this age is too much for him. Meanwhile, defending champions Argentina will face Canada in their tournament opener on June 21.

The men’s football competition runs from July 24 to August 9 at the Summer Games. This is primarily an under-23 event, with each team allowed to have three overage players. With Argentina involved, it led to discussions of Messi featuring in his last Olympic Games.&nbsp;

However, in a chat with ESPN Argentina, Messi informed Argentina Under-23 coach Javier Mascherano of his unavailability for this tournament. Having played and won the Olympic gold medal alongside Mascherano before, Messi knows the platform it provides to participating athletes but vows to be careful of his playing schedule at 36.

It was a wonderful experience on a football level. Olympics, U20, memories I'll never forget,” the football great continued.

Remaining unavailable for selection at this year’s Summer Games for obvious reasons, Messi wished the to-be-selected squad good luck, adding they must enjoy playing at the Olympics as it is special in many ways and different from everything else.&nbsp;

Lionel Messi has clapped back at Kylian Mbappe's recent comments that the European Championship was tougher to win than Copa America. The former Paris Saint-Germain teammates have had contrasting views about the continental championships with Mbappe being a vocal critic of South American football in general. Speaking to ESPN in an interview, Messi gently reminded Mbappe that multiple times World Cup winners were from South America and were not playing Euros. "Well, everybody prioritises their tournament," Messi said. "Obviously, the Euro is very important and has the best teams, but he's leaving out three-time champion Argentina, five-time champion Brazil, two-time champion Uruguay. There are a lot of world champions left off to say that it's the most difficult tournament. "The best teams play in the World Cup, which generally includes all the world champions. There's a reason everybody wants to be champion," he added. Ahead of the Euros that start on June 14, Mbappe stirred up controversy by comparing the competitive nature of the tournament with Copa America. “I consider the Euros more complicated than the World Cup, more complicated to win. If we talk about level, the Euros is more difficult because we are so used to play against each other. Tactically, it is similar football," said Mbappe. Mbappe's previous statement Notably, it wasn't the first instance that Mbappe had taken a dig at South American football for being 'inferior'. In the lead-up to the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, Mbappe made similar comments but was made to eat the humble pie by Messi's Argentina in the final. "Argentina haven't played games of great quality to reach the World Cup. In South America football isn't as advanced as Europe. That's why if you look at the last World Cups it's always the Europeans that win," Mbappe had said at the time. Also read | 'He doesn't know enough about football': Emiliano Martinez about Kylian Mbappe ahead of the final Mbappe was slammed even then for his statement with players like Lautaro Martinez and former Brazil coach Tite gently reminding the Frenchman to not make such unfair comparisons when conditions and opposition were starkly different. Emiliano Martinez, the Argentine goalkeeper and hero of the World Cup final said Mbappe did not know enough about South American football to comment. “He doesn’t know enough about football. He never played in South America. When you don’t have this experience, it may be better not to talk about it. But it doesn’t matter. We are a great team, recognised as such," Martinez said. Vinicius Junior has strengthened his Ballon d'Or credentials after firing Real Madrid to a record-extending 15th UEFA Champions League title on Saturday (Jun 1). In doing so, the forward equalled the record set by Lionel Messi in the knockout stages of the tournament. According to Opta, after his goal in Saturday's final, Vini Jr. took his goal tally in the knockouts of the continental tournament to 11. Overall, he now has 22 goal involvements, including 11 assists, which is the joint most by any player before turning 24, alongside Messi. Messi won his first Ballon d'Or at the age of 22 and there is a high possibility that the Brazilian might sweep this year's award which has seen a duopoly of the Argentine and Cristiano Ronaldo over the last decade-and-a-half. 22 - Vinícius Júnior has been directly involved in 22 goals in the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League (11 goals, 11 assists); the joint-most by any player before turning 24, along with Lionel Messi. Prior to Vinicius' goal, it was Dani Carvajal that opened the scoring by heading the ball from an immaculate delivery, fired in from the corner by a departing Toni Kroos. Dortmund had dominated the game up until then and could have easily scored three or more goals if the forward line had kept its composure. Vini deserves the Ballon d'Or: Ancelotti After the match, Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti, who won his fifth UCL title in his managerial career, said Vinicus should lift the 2024 Ballon d'Or. “Vini Jr. deserves the Ballon d’Or. France Football - the Ballon d’Or organisers are said to be considering awarding Poland and Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski with the prestigious award for missing out on the chance in 2020 due to Covid-19.

France Football - the Ballon d’Or organisers are said to be considering awarding Poland and Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski with the prestigious award for missing out on the chance in 2020 due to Covid-19. The former Bayern Munich forward was in the pole position to win the most coveted individual award in football during the 2020 season, but due to a pandemic-like situation worldwide, with several competitions getting curtailed, the organisers opted against hosting the Ballon d’Or that year. However, Robert was heads and shoulders ahead of everyone that season, scoring a staggering 47 goals in 44 appearances (most in Europe), helping Bayern win the treble, including the Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain. Even though no Ballon d’Or ceremony was hosted that year, Lewandowski continued his purple patch the following season, netting 41 times in a 29-game Bundesliga season (a record then). However, PSG superstar Lionel Messi was awarded his seventh Ballon d’Or title that year in a hotly-debated decision. During his speech, The Argentine said, "Robert, you deserve your Ballon d'Or." Robert's time has come, finally! Four years later, the Ballon d’Or organisers are contemplating awarding Lewandowski the coveted prize (during the October ceremony this year) that he deserved in 2020. Speaking on the same, Robert said he is not angry at missing out on his moment but admits he wishes to be awarded for his performances in those two seasons. "Of course, I would have liked to receive the Ballon d'Or award," Lewandowski said to Sport Bild last month. "It's not that I'm angry or wistful because this trophy is still missing. But my feeling is that it would have been my turn in one of the two years." Meanwhile, Lewandowski’s agent recently confirmed that despite all the rumours of him leaving the club, the Polish captain continues to stay at Camp Nou for the upcoming season.

What is the story behind the napkin? Lionel Messi was born in 1987 into a working-class family in Rosario, about 300 kilometres north of Buenos Aires. Barcelona spotted Messi when he was just 13 and recognised that he had the qualities to become an all-timer. However, not everyone in the upper hierarchy of the club was convinced of signing an unknown South American kid. They kept dragging the deal, which made Messi's father impatient. On 14 December 2000, a fateful meeting occurred between Carles Rexach, Barca's sporting director, and agents Josep Minguella and Horacio Gaggioli at the Barcelona tennis club. Also read | Lionel Messi magic hits MLS as Inter Miami crush New York Red Bulls in marathon win Rexach confirmed the club's interest by reaching out for the napkin and writing on it with blue ink, what would become an iconic piece of football memorabilia. "In Barcelona, on December 14, 2000, and in the presence of the gentleman (the agent, Josep Maria) Minguella and Horacio (Gaggioli), Carles Rexach, technical secretary of FCB, commits under his responsibility, despite the opinion of others who are against signing Lionel Messi, as long as the agreed fees are maintained." Gaggioli held on the piece for almost 25 years until deciding to sell it. Messi's formal contract was drawn up later, but this napkin was the springboard to greatness for FC Barcelona. The signing of the contract changed not only the fortunes of Barcelona Football Club but also the footballing landscape as Messi would go on to sweep as many as eight Ballon d'Or's and win one of most memorable World Cups in recent memory. Messi is currently plying his trade in the Major League Soccer (MLS) where he is enjoying his football, away from the rigours of European football. However, the Argentine will be gearing up for the Copa America, scheduled to start next month where he will be defending his crown. Argentina won 2021 Copa America by beating Brazil at the Maracana, which would propel Messi to do the unthinkable on the world stage, two years later in Qatar. (With inputs from agencies)

Luis Suarez scored a hat-trick and Lionel Messi had an incredible five assists and a goal in the second half as a rampant Inter Miami crushed the New York Red Bulls 6-2 in Major League Soccer on Saturday.

Two-goal substitute Matias Rojas sparked the second half rout from Eastern Conference leaders Inter after New York had led 1-0 at the break.

Without Messi, Miami had fallen to a 4-0 defeat to the Red Bulls in New York in March, but they more than avenged that loss with a merciless second-half demolition job.

Messi's five assists, which all came in the second half, are a new record for an MLS game and he now has 10 goals and 12 assists in eight league appearances so far this season.

Operating behind Suarez, Messi's passing through the slightest of gaps, taking advantage of his former Barcelona teammate's telepathic understanding of his intentions, was simply too much for the Red Bulls, who came into the game third in the East.

"Obviously what we have seen today surprises people, because you don't see that in football," said Suarez of Messi's five assists. "But as a teammate and someone who knows him, nothing surprises me about him," added the Uruguayan.

The 37-year-old Suarez's triples takes his own tally to 10 in 11 league games for Miami and despite no longer being blessed with pace, his deadly finishing clearly remains intact.

While it was the kind of attacking display that Miami owners Jorge Mas and David Beckham surely dreamed of when they brought in the star pairing, there was no sign of the explosiveness in the opening half.

Dante Vanzeir had put the Red Bulls ahead in the 30th minute, slotting home after Wikelman Carmona's shot came out off the post, following a superb through pass from Swedish playmaker Emil Forsberg.

Gerardo Martino's Inter lacked intensity and ideas in the opening 45 minutes but the coach's half-time change transformed the game.

Paraguayan Rojas was introduced for the second half and took just three minutes to make an impact, collecting a pass from Messi and evading two defenders before unleashing an unstoppable drive from 25 yards out.

Messi then put Miami in front when Rojas robbed Carmona and found Suarez, who slipped the ball to the Argentine, who made no mistake.

The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner then turned provider again as he split the New York defense with a brilliant through ball to Rojas, who deftly chipped over the advancing Carlos Coronel.

Suarez's hat trick then came in the space of 12 minutes -- he first found the target when Messi chipped in a ball from the right and the Uruguayan hooked home a volley.

It was playground stuff minutes later when Suarez played a one-two with Messi and then poked home to make it 5-1.

Messi was yet again the creator for Miami's sixth, which Suarez turned in from close range from the tightest of angles.

"The partnership of him (Messi) and Luis (Suarez) in the second half worked very well, like in old times (...) They were very influential in the game," said Martino.

New York had a late consolation in the final seconds with a penalty from Forsberg.

New England, who had been hit by a virus in the build-up to the game and bottom of the Eastern Conference, delighted the bumper home crowd after just 40 seconds through an Argentine of their own -- Tomas Chancalay.

Miami defender Nicolas Freire gave the ball away to Spanish midfielder Carles Gil who clipped a ball over the top to Chancalay, who spotted Drake Callender well off his line and chipped it over the stranded Miami keeper for the opening goal.

Messi got Miami back on level terms in the 32nd minute when he was found by Robert Taylor's through pass and the 36-year-old made no mistake, slotting home.

The eight-times Ballon d'Or winner struck again to put Miami ahead in the 68th minute when he collected a superb defence-splitting pass from his former Barcelona team-mate Sergio Busquets and finished with his usual ease.

Miami added two more in the final stages -- both created by Messi.

Substitute Benjamin Cremaschi made it 3-1 in the 83rd minute, pouncing after a Messi shot was parried out. Luis Suarez completed the scoring, finding the top corner after a pass inside from Messi.

Miami have won three straight games since their exit from the CONCACAF Champions Cup at the hands of Mexican club Monterrey with Messi scoring five times in that run which includes wins at Kansas City and at home to Nashville.

Coach Gerardo Martino said the team were starting to come together as he had hoped.

"The Kansas City game was a key for us, because we had just been eliminated by Monterrey and the team showed their character. Now we have three wins in a row and it is getting more solid every time," he said.

Martino said the rest of his players had now got used to playing in front of the large crowds that Messi is drawing.

"We've handled it well. That was a learning curve last season and now we are dealing with it well," he added.

New England coach Caleb Porter said he was disappointed that his defenders had allowed Messi the space for his goals but said the Argentine had shown his class in making them pay.

Elsewhere, Christian Benteke scored twice for D.C. United as they enjoyed a 2-1 win at home to the Seattle Sounders.

The Sounders led 1-0 through a Leo Chu goal but had goalkeeper Stefan Frei sent off in the 28th minute after he brought down Jared Stroud in the box,

Major League Soccer: Messi scores a brace as Miami beat New England 4-1

Inter Miami's Lionel Messi was called a "possessed dwarf" with the "face of the devil" by Monterrey assistant coach Nico Sanchez when the two teams squared up in the CONCACAF Champions Cup quarter-final last week.

Inter Miami's Lionel Messi was called a "possessed dwarf" with the "face of the devil" by Monterrey assistant coach Nico Sanchez when the two teams squared up in the CONCACAF Champions Cup quarter-final last week. Although Messi did not take part in the first leg 1-2 defeat at the Chase Stadium, he alongside Luis Suarez, Jordi Alba and Inter Miami coach Tata Martino, clashed with opposition players and coaches in the tunnel after the match. In the wake of the arguments between the two sides, an audio has been leaked through FOX Sports MX where Sanchez can be heard saying some nasty language concerning Messi. “The dwarf was possessed, he had the face of the devil. He put his fist next to my face and says: ‘Who do you think you are?’ But because I didn’t look at him, I was looking away, I never answered back, it made things worse," said Sanchez. "And Tata Martino, what a poor dummy, I had him in front of me telling me: ‘Fool, you going to cry? Fool you going to cry?’ What a dummy! All those videos, they probably erased them all because it leaves them looking bad. What they did was really serious. They want to dirty the pitch," he added. As the controversy snowballed with Messi fans targetting Sanchez and the Mexican team online, the assistant coach released a video and apologised to Martino. However, Sanchez did not mention Messi by name in his apology video. “Since I do not know the Inter coach, Gerardo Martino, and I referred to him in a disrespectful manner, and I apologise,” Sánchez said. “I am as Argentine as all of them and I will always defend my club. I’m here to show my face and take charge.” Also read | Lionel Messi-Hong Kong controversy: Fans to receive 50% refund after Argentine star missed friendly match What happened? Notably, the bust-up happened as Inter Miami players were left fuming after a number of decisions went against them in the match. Miami were shown six yellow cards and a red card while Monterrey picked up only three bookings. In the lead-up to the match, Monterrey head coach Fernando Ortiz said he was concerned about Miami receiving preferential treatment from the officials due to Messi's celebrity status. “Everything that surrounds Messi can lead to sporting and non-sporting decisions,” Ortiz said. “I am concerned about the environment, football is business, business does not go the way of Monterrey.” The second leg between the two sides takes place on Wednesday (Apr 10) with Miami travelling to Mexico to overturn the tie. With Messi available, Miami would be hopeful of snatching the tie, especially after the controversy that has ensued. (With inputs from agencies)

Lionel Messi has shrugged off retirement talks, saying he remains self-critical of his performances. The World Cup winner with Argentina said the day he feels he cannot contribute to his team’s success, he will step aside.

Messi, who plays for Inter Miami in the Major League Soccer (MLS) in the US, will turn 37 later this year. He said age will not be a factor when he considers retirement some day.

"I haven't yet thought of what I'm going to do when I retire," Messi confessed during an interview with Big Time.

"Today I try to enjoy the day-to-day, the moments, without thinking about life after [football].”&nbsp;

"I know that the moment I feel that I am no longer able to perform, that I no longer enjoy [playing] or [can] help my teammates, I will quit. I'm very self-critical of myself; I know when I'm good, when I'm bad when I'm playing well and when I'm playing badly.

"When I feel it's time to take that step, I'll take it without thinking about age. If I feel good, I'll always try to keep competing because it's what I like and I know how to do," the Argentine great said.

Feeling grateful for the achievements and accolades he earned during his decorated career, Messi thanked God for putting him in the position that he is in today.&nbsp;

The former Barcelona great admitted remaining clueless about his future, saying he wishes to enjoy playing football for the longest time that he can, and upon feeling fulfilment he will take a call to step aside.

"I'm not sure about anything yet, I hope to keep playing for a while longer, which is what I like to do. When the time comes, I will surely find a way to fulfil myself and do what I like, and [find] a new role,” Messi said.

"On a sporting level, I was lucky enough to be able to achieve all my dreams and the truth is that I can't ask for more. Thank God he gave me [everything] both professionally and on a human level, as well as my family, my friends.

"I try to enjoy everything God has given me so far, which is a lot," the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner said.

Having spent 21 years at Camp Nou since his emergence on the football scene, Messi walked away from the club, having won everything that there was to win at the domestic and European levels.&nbsp;

Talking about his shock move to Paris-Saint Germain (PSG) in the summer of 2021, Messi said he was heartbroken to leave Barcelona, admitting to beginning a new life from scratch.&nbsp;

"It was difficult to change [clubs] when I went to PSG because I was very well at Barcelona and I thought I was going to stay there,” Messi said.

"I wasn't ready to leave, everything happened very quickly. I had to rebuild my life from one day to the next. I got to know another league, another club, a new locker room.

It was a change we weren't looking for and that's why it was difficult at the beginning," Messi added.&nbsp;

Football fans in Hong Kong who turned up to watch Lionel Messi during an exhibition match last month and were left disappointed by the Argentine superstar's absence will receive a 50 per cent refund, as long as they don't launch legal action, per a report in AFP news agency.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Organiser Tatler Asia on Monday (Mar 18) said those who purchased tickets through official channels for the match would be offered a 50 per cent refund. It added that those seeking the refund will have to agree to terms and conditions that include&nbsp;not pursuing "proceedings before any court of law, tribunal (or) regulatory authority".

Notably, the capacity crowd had paid as much as&nbsp;880 Hong Kong dollars ($110) to 4,880 Hong Kong dollars ($624) per person to watch Messi recreate his magic on field for Inter Miami during a tour match against a Hong Kong select XI.&nbsp;

However, the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner sat on the bench with an injury, drawing boos from the crowd. The controversy snowballed with China seeing his absence as a political snub.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Notably, Messi opted to play against Vissel Kobe in Japan later, having also played in Saudi Arabia before the match in Hong Kong.
