'Everything is going...': Argentina great Lionel Messi confirms he will retire at Inter Miami

Lionel Messi has shrugged off retirement talks, saying he remains self-critical of his performances. The World Cup winner with Argentina said the day he feels he cannot contribute to his team’s success, he will step aside.

Messi, who plays for Inter Miami in the Major League Soccer (MLS) in the US, will turn 37 later this year. He said age will not be a factor when he considers retirement some day.

"I haven't yet thought of what I'm going to do when I retire," Messi confessed during an interview with Big Time.

"Today I try to enjoy the day-to-day, the moments, without thinking about life after [football].”

"I know that the moment I feel that I am no longer able to perform, that I no longer enjoy [playing] or [can] help my teammates, I will quit. I'm very self-critical of myself; I know when I'm good, when I'm bad when I'm playing well and when I'm playing badly.

"When I feel it's time to take that step, I'll take it without thinking about age. If I feel good, I'll always try to keep competing because it's what I like and I know how to do," the Argentine great said.

Feeling grateful for the achievements and accolades he earned during his decorated career, Messi thanked God for putting him in the position that he is in today.

"I'm not sure about anything yet, I hope to keep playing for a while longer, which is what I like to do. When the time comes, I will surely find a way to fulfil myself and do what I like, and [find] a new role,” Messi said.

"On a sporting level, I was lucky enough to be able to achieve all my dreams and the truth is that I can't ask for more. Thank God he gave me [everything] both professionally and on a human level, as well as my family, my friends.

"I try to enjoy everything God has given me so far, which is a lot," the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner said.

Broken marriage with Barcelona still hurts

Having spent 21 years at Camp Nou since his emergence on the football scene, Messi walked away from the club, having won everything that there was to win at the domestic and European levels.

Talking about his shock move to Paris-Saint Germain (PSG) in the summer of 2021, Messi said he was heartbroken to leave Barcelona, admitting to beginning a new life from scratch.

"It was difficult to change [clubs] when I went to PSG because I was very well at Barcelona and I thought I was going to stay there,” Messi said.

"I wasn't ready to leave, everything happened very quickly. I had to rebuild my life from one day to the next. I got to know another league, another club, a new locker room.

It was a change we weren't looking for and that's why it was difficult at the beginning," Messi added.

World Cup winner Lionel Messi shrugs off retirement talks, says ‘I haven’t thought about it yet’

World Cup champion Lionel Messi expressed remorse over his actions during the World Cup quarterfinals, including wild celebrations and gestures towards Netherlands manager Louis van Gaal. Messi and his teammates received criticism for their behaviour following their 2-2 draw on December 9 and subsequent win on penalties. The Paris Saint-Germain player ran in front of Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal as he cupped his hands over his ears in celebration of his 73rd-minute penalty goal. Messi had mentioned that the Netherlands manager used derogatory remarks about Argentina during the pre-match press conference.

"I knew what Van Gaal had said but it [the goal celebration] happened on the spur of the moment. I didn`t like what I did, I didn`t like what happened after. These are moments of nervousness and everything happens very quickly," Messi said in an interview in Paris with Andy Kusnetzoff`s "Perros de la Calle" as quoted by ESPN. At full-time, the Argentina captain was spotted arguing with Van Gaal and Edgar Davids, his assistant. During a post-game interview, Messi allegedly yelled at Netherlands goal scorer Wout Weghorst.

Playing his last World Cup, Ronaldo was expected to take the Portugal line-up to the final but his side bowed out with a 1-0 loss at the hands of Morocco in the quarter-finals. The veteran footballer was seen crying on the field as his World Cup dream ended in a heartbreaking manner.

Many believed that the World Cup debacle would put an end to Ronaldo's international career. However, as per a report by Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manha, the Portuguese striker might extend his career till the Euro 2024 edition. The next edition of the Euro Cup will be held in Germany and by then Ronaldo will be nearing 40. He had led his side to a remarkable Euro Cup title in 2016 and, hence, might be eager to replicate the feat once again and bow out on a high.

Talking about Ronaldo's run in the FIFA WC in Qatar, the 37-year-old didn't have a great run as he returned with only a solitary goal -- that too via a penalty kick -- in five games. Moreover, he wasn't even in the starting XI in Portugal's last two WC fixtures, i.e. in the Round of 16 clash versus Switzerland and Morocco tie in the quarters. Given how ordinary run in the FIFA WC, it is a welcome news if Ronaldo is not looking to end his international career just yet. His ardent fans would hope for him to bounce back in style in 2023 and lead Portugal to the European championship in 2024.

Meanwhile, Ronaldo's longtime rival Lionel Messi confirmed that the forthcoming World Cup final will be his last appearance in the showpiece event after starring in Argentina's 3-0 win over Croatia in the first semi-final on Wednesday (December 14).

"I feel very happy, to be able to achieve this, to finish my World Cup journey by playing my last game in a final," Messi said while talking to Argentine media outlet Diario Deportivo Ole. "It's many years for the next one and I don't think I'll be able to do it. And to finish like this, it's the best," added the Argentina captain.

Surely, 2022 hasn't been kind to Cristiano Ronaldo. After a fallout with the Manchester United, he left the club with his contract still not getting over. Post his exit from the Old Trafford club, the focus shifted to the FIFA World Cup 2022 edition in Qatar.
