Gujarat has been witnessing intense thunderstorms and hailstorms, apart from heavy rain, with some regions receiving up to 144mm (5.7 inches) of rain in the 24 hours ending Monday morning, Reuters news agency reported quoting state government data.

The heavy rain has destroyed crops in at least 200 places, left more than 25 injured, and at least 70 animals dead.

The state officials have attributed at least 18 of the 24 deaths to lightning strikes.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, whose home state is Gujarat, condoled the deaths&nbsp;in a post on X and said the local administration was engaged in relief work.

“I am deeply saddened by the news of the death of many people due to bad weather and lightning in various cities of Gujarat. I express my deepest condolences for the irreparable loss to those who lost their loved ones in this tragedy. The local administration is engaged in relief work, praying for the speedy recovery of the injured.”&nbsp;

Gujarat’s agricultural minister Raghavji Patel on Monday (Nov 27) said that they are assessing the damage caused by unseasonal rains and added that&nbsp;compensation would be provided once the survey to assess the damage to crops is out.

<h2>More rainfall expected&nbsp;</h2>

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel is currently on an official visit to Japan with a high-level delegation to attract foreign investment in the state.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast rainfall to continue in parts of the state on Monday.

IMD’s Ahmedabad unit chief Manorama Mohanty told BBC that the collision of three weather systems over Gujarat caused the lightning strikes.

"These are the easterly winds flowing from the Arabian Sea, the Western Disturbance over the Western Himalayas and the Cyclonic Circulation over South Gujarat," Mohanty told BBC Gujarati.

“We have never seen this material occur naturally on Earth – minerals similar to it can be found in meteorites and space, but we've never seen this exact material anywhere,” said geoscientist Matthew Pasek.&nbsp;

Pasek recently looked at how high-energy incidents, like lightning, can trigger unusual chemical reactions, and in this case, result in a novel substance that is transitional between space minerals and the earth's crust, as per the University of South Florida.&nbsp;

“When lightning strikes a tree, the ground typically explodes out and the surrounding grass dies, forming a scar and sending electric discharge through nearby rock, soil and sand, forming fulgurites, also known as ‘fossilized lightning’,” Pasek said.&nbsp;

When the New Port Richey homeowners discovered the ‘lightning scar’, they found a fulgurite and decided to sell it, determining it had value. &nbsp;

Pasek purchased it, and then began an association with Luca Bindi, a professor of mineralogy and crystallography at the University of Florence in Italy.

The material was attempted to be recreated in a lab by co-principal investigator Tian Feng, a USF geology graduate. As a result of the experiment's failure, it can be concluded that the substance forms swiftly under specific circumstances and that, if heated for an extended period of time, it will transform into the mineral found in meteorites.&nbsp;

Given the rarity of it present naturally, Pasek claims that it is uncertain that this material could be mined for uses similar to those of other phosphates, such as fertiliser. A team of scientists have created a way of what they describe as their attempt to guide lightning strikes with a first-of-a-kind car-sized Laser Lightning Rod. The findings of their study were published in the journal Nature Photonics which took place on top of the Säntis mountain at an altitude of about 8,200 feet in north-eastern Switzerland. Researchers were able to guide a lightning bolt for more than 50 metres with a powerful laser near a 124-metre-high telecom tower which is struck by lightning at least 100 times a year and is often referred to as one of Europe’s most affected by lightning structures.&nbsp;

Lightning bolts are huge electrical discharges and a single one can reach up to a 30,000 degree Celsius temperature five times hotter than the surface of the sun. It is a complex phenomenon caused by an imbalance of positive and negative charges between storm clouds and the ground, however, some travel upward. Furthermore, while the chances of a person getting struck by lightning are rare, it has caused thousands of deaths and also tens of billions of dollars worth of damage to infrastructure every year.&nbsp;

Therefore, the research has major implications as scientists are looking for newer ways to protect lives and infrastructure from the typical lightning rod, the idea of which was first conceived by Benjamin Franklin in the 18th century. “Metal rods are used almost everywhere to protect from lightning, but the area they can protect is limited to a few metres or tens of metres,” said Aurélien Houard, a physicist at Ecole Polytechnique’s Laboratory of Applied Optics in France and the lead author of the study, to the Guardian.&nbsp;

According to the study, the total lightning flash rate worldwide, based on satellite data, is between 40 and 120 flashes per second while the number of lightning fatalities is well above 4,000. The large car-sized device which uses lasers manufactured by Germany-based&nbsp;Trumpf Group&nbsp;weighs at least five tonnes and is capable of firing up to 1,000 pulses per second. Last year, between July and September the team rapidly fired laser pulses at thunderclouds for more than six hours and observed its effect by using high-speed cameras several kilometres away.&nbsp;

They found that they were able to guide an upward negative lightning leader over a distance of 50 metres which was then recorded by two separate high-speed cameras. “We wanted to give the first demonstration that the laser can have an influence on lightning - and it is simplest to guide it”, said Houard. In simple terms, the laser acts as a virtual lightning rod which mimics metal conductors which intercept and divert lightning bolts.&nbsp;

While such experiments using lasers to guide lightning bolts have been conducted before in 2004, according to Houard, they did not emit enough pulses per second for lightning, which brews in milliseconds and therefore were unsuccessful. However, there is a catch, as lasers pose a risk to the eyes of pilots flying by. In fact, the study was conducted after temporarily shutting the air traffic over the test site.&nbsp;

“Indeed, there is a potential issue using the system with air traffic in the area because the laser could harm the eyes of the pilot if he crosses the laser beam and looks down,” said Houard, as per Reuters. But scientists believe that this technology could be used in designated areas where no-fly restrictions apply.&nbsp;

Local reports mentioned that the victims were taken to the local hospitals. However, there is no update on their current condition.&nbsp;

Citing a law enforcement source, CNN reported that the victims were riding out the storm under a tree. Although, local reports said that the officials are still trying to find out whether or not the victims knew each other.

In a video shared by local media, it can be seen that the man was walking in an open area with an umbrella in hand while it was raining. A few seconds after, a lightning strikes the man and sparks are seen flying in the video.&nbsp; <o:p></o:p>

While the man is seen struggling to stand, as soon as the sparks settle, the man can be seen falling down on the ground unconscious and completely wet.<o:p></o:p>

As soon his colleagues see the security guard fall on the ground, nearly six people rush to the spot to help him.<o:p></o:p>

The man was immediately taken to a local hospital for his treatment. He suffered some burns on his hand but has survived the deadly attack. He was initially being treated at the hospital for the hand burns, but was discharged after four days. He is now resting and recovering at his home.<o:p></o:p>
