Apart from the daily exchange of fires at the Lebanon-Israel border, the escalation has reached a new high. People of Lebanon are in a state of fear & panic after there were simultaneous device blasts across the country. How did multiple devices explode at the same time? We tell you more.

Lebanon: Walkie-talkies, Phones & Pagers Hacked

Lebanon's Hezbollah was still handing its members new Gold Apollo branded pagers hours before thousands blew up this week, two security sources said, indicating the group was confident the devices were safe despite an ongoing sweep of electronic kits to identify threats.

One member of the Iranian-backed militia received a new pager on Monday that exploded the next day while it was still in its box, said one of the sources.

A pager given to a senior member just days earlier injured a subordinate when it detonated, the second source said.

In an apparently coordinated attack, the Gold Apollo branded devices detonated on Tuesday across Hezbollah's strongholds of south Lebanon, Beirut's suburbs, and the eastern Bekaa valley.

On Wednesday, hundreds of Hezbollah walkie-talkies exploded. The consecutive attacks killed 37 people, including at least two children, and injured more than 3,000 people.

The batteries of the walkie-talkies were laced with a highly explosive compound known as PETN, another Lebanese source familiar with the device's components told Reuters on Friday. Up to three grams of explosives hidden in the pagers had gone undetected for months by Hezbollah, Reuters reported earlier this week.

One of the security sources said it was very hard to detect the explosives "with any device or scanner." The source did not specify what type of scanners Hezbollah had run the pagers through.

Hezbollah examined the pagers after they were delivered to Lebanon, starting in 2022, including by travelling through airports with them to ensure they would not trigger alarms, two additional sources told Reuters. In total, Reuters spoke to six sources familiar with the details of the exploding devices for this story.

The sources did not specify the names of the airports where they conducted the tests.

Lebanon and Hezbollah say Israel was behind the attacks. Israel's secretive military intelligence Unit 8200 was involved in the planning, a Western security source told Reuters this week. Israel, which has since stepped up airstrikes on Lebanon, has neither denied nor confirmed involvement.

Rather than a specific suspicion of the pagers, the checks had been part of a routine "sweep" of its equipment, including communications devices, to find any indications that they were laced with explosives or surveillance mechanisms, one of the security sources said.

The attacks, and the distribution of the devices despite the routine sweep and checks for breaches, have struck at Hezbollah's reputation as the most formidable of Iran's allied 'Axis of Resistance' umbrella of anti-Israel irregular forces across the Middle East.

In a televised speech on Thursday, Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah said the attacks were "unprecedented in the history" of the group.

Hezbollah's media office and Israel's armed forces did not immediately respond to requests for comment for this story.

Taiwan-based Gold Apollo has said it did not manufacture the devices used in the attack, saying they were made by a company in Europe licensed to use the firm's brand. Reuters has not been able to establish where they were made or at what point they were tampered with.

A batch of 5,000 of the pagers were brought into Lebanon earlier this year. Reuters previously reported that Hezbollah turned to pagers in an attempt to evade Israeli surveillance of its mobile phones, following the killing of senior commanders in targeted airstrikes over the past year.

Hezbollah's conflict with Israel dates back decades but has flared up in the past year in parallel with the Gaza war, heightening worries of a full-blown regional war.

Too little, too late

After the pagers detonated on Tuesday, Hezbollah suspected more of its devices may have been compromised, two of the security sources, as well as an intelligence source, told Reuters.

In response, it intensified the sweep of its communications systems, carrying out careful examinations of all devices. It also began investigating the supply chains through which the pagers were brought in, the two security sources said.

But the review had not been concluded by Wednesday afternoon when the hand-held radios exploded.

Hezbollah believes that Israel opted to detonate the group's hand-held radios because it feared Hezbollah would soon find that the walkie-talkies were also rigged with explosives, one of the sources told Reuters.

The walkie-talkie explosions left 25 people dead and at least 650 injured, according to Lebanon's health ministry - a much higher fatality rate than the previous day's pager blasts, which killed 12 and wounded nearly 3,000.

That is because they carried a higher payload of explosives than the beepers, one of the security sources and the intelligence source said.

The group's probe into precisely where, when and how the devices were laced with explosives is ongoing, three of the sources said. Nasrallah later said the same in the speech on Thursday.

One of the security sources said Hezbollah had foiled previous Israeli operations targeting devices imported from abroad by the group - from its private landline telephones to ventilation units in the group's offices.

That includes suspected breaches in the past year.

"There are several electronic issues that we were able to discover - but not the pagers," the source said. "They tricked us, hats off to the enemy."

Hezbollah handed out pagers to its members hours before blasts

Iran's Revolutionary Guards Commander Salami told Hezbollah Chief Nasrallah that Israel will face "a crushing response from the axis of resistance”. The axis of resistance refers to Iran-aligned armed groups in the Middle East. This includes Lebanon's Hezbollah, Yemen's Houthis, and Iraq's Popular Mobilisation Forces. Lebanon and Hezbollah have blamed Israel for the attacks on Tuesday and Wednesday. Watch in for more details!

After Taiwanese firm Gold Apollo claimed it had not manufactured the pagers that exploded and killed 12 people, including two children, the focus has now shifted towards a Hungary-based company called BAC Consulting which allegedly had the license to develop the devices.

According to BAC's company records, the firm was incorporated in 2022 and has a single shareholder, with its registered address being a building in Budapest's 14th district.

A BBC report stated that apart from BAC, 13 more companies and one person are also registered at the same building. The initial investigation did not reveal BAC's connection to other companies or the person.

The balance sheet of the company revealed that BAC had a net turnover of 256,996,000 Hungarian Forint ($725,000) in 2022, and 210,307,000 Hungarian Forint ($593,000) in 2023.

The company's website, which is now inaccessible, listed Cristiana Bársony-Arcidiacono as its chief executive and founder.

Quizzed by NBC about her company's association with the incident, Bársony-Arcidiacono confirmed BAC worked with Gold Apollo but denied manufacturing any of the pagers.

"I don’t make the pagers. I am just the intermediate. I think you got it wrong," she was quoted as saying.

Zoltan Kovács, the spokesperson for the Hungarian prime minister's office also said BAC was "a trading intermediary", with no manufacturing or operational site in Hungary.

After the blasts rocked Lebanon, unverified images of two damaged pagers surfaced on social media which showed the word "Gold" and a serial number starting either “AP” or “AR”. The early reports indicated that Gold Apollo may have been involved in the manufacturing of the pagers.

Taiwan's Economy Minister Kuo-Jyh-Huei also corroborated Gold Apollo's version and said

"The situation as we understand it is, all the components in the pagers produced by this company (Gold Apollo) will not explode. Roughly during the last two years, this company has exported about 260,000 pagers, there has never been any explosions. So, we can determine that the pagers produced in Taiwan do not explode," said Kuo.

Kuo said that a judicial investigation into the matter was already underway.

Panic, chaos as home security, solar energy systems explode in Lebanon after pagers, walkie-talkies

Reports citing Hezbollah sources have claimed that walkie-talkies have blown up at strongholds across the Lebanon capital city of Beirut, a day after similar explosions occurred in pagers being used by the fighters and medics linked to the militant organisation.

Media reports said "thousands of walkie-talkies" blew up, killing at least 14 people and injuring 450 others.

"The wave of enemy explosions that targeted walkie-talkies... killed 14 people and wounded more than 450," the Lebanese health ministry said in a statement.

After pagers, walkie-talkie explosions rock Hezbollah in Lebanon, 14 dead

After deadly pager explosions, now reports are emerging of a fresh wave of explosions in walkie-talkies across Lebanon’s south and the southern suburbs of the capital Beirut. At least 20 people were killed and over 450 injured in Lebanon after hand-held radios or walkie-talkies used by militant group Hezbollah exploded in multiple parts of the country.

Lebanon walkie-talkie blasts: Blasts in Hezbollah strongholds stoke fears of an all-out-war

Lebanon is in shock after Israel targeted Hezbollah's telecom devices, injuring and maiming thousands. The international community is condemning these attacks. Israel has not explicitly taken responsibility for attacks on Hezbollah's communication devices.

Lebanon Blasts: Lebanon Explosions Raise Alarm About Supply Chain Security

Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah has condemned the recent pager and walkie-talkie attacks, calling them “a terrorist act” and a declaration of war against the people of Lebanon and the nation’s sovereignty. His strong statement highlights the escalating tensions and potential implications for regional stability.

Lebanon Blast: Hezbollah Chief Breaks Silence, Says "Israel Has Crossed All Red Lines"

On Tuesday (Sep 17), hundreds of pagers of Hezbollah fighters suddenly blasted in an unprecedented attack which was called a brutal strike on the militant group's "Achilles' heel".

In the mysterious blast, at least nine people lost their lives and around 2,800 suffered injuries.

The nature of the attack surpassed the level of scope and execution seen in various covert assassinations and cyber-attacks that have taken place in the region in recent years.

Also, the technique reportedly used by Israel to rattle Hezbollah has placed a question mark over its ability to secure its communication strategy. "This is a very concerning development and it shows Hezbollah is very vulnerable to Israel's intelligence capabilities. The leadership of Hezbollah will have to overhaul its communication strategy and will have to come up with a solution which would be more secure than these pagers," said David Wood, Senior Lebanon Analyst at Crisis Group.

How did the pager explosion occur?

The wireless pagers suddenly exploded at 3:30 pm (local time) in Lebanon just after a message was delivered on the device, which appeared to have been sent by the leadership of Hezbollah.

As per the officials, the delivery of the messages activated the explosives as the device beeped for many seconds before it exploded.

Nearly 3,000 pagers exploded in the blast. Speaking to the news agency Reuters, a Lebanese security source said that nearly three grams of explosives were hidden in the new pagers and Hezbollah had failed to detect it for months.

Hezbollah has claimed that the attack was orchestrated by Israel, however, the latter has not commented on the attack.

The pagers which exploded had been recently purchased by Hezbollah said a Lebanese security source to CNN.

The explosions have underscored how vulnerable Hezbollah’s communication network is and how it was compromised which led to the deadly blasts.

"This is an extraordinary assault, notable not only for its lethal precision but also for the secrecy surrounding its execution. The attack has left Hezbollah reeling from a severe security breach, and recovery is likely to be slow. The immediate toll—marked by substantial casualties and an urgent scramble for a new, secure means of communication—compounds the group’s vulnerabilities," said Mohammed Soliman, Director, Strategic Technologies and Cyber Security Programme while speaking to WION.

How were the pagers compromised and turned into explosives?

The blast showed the world how the compromise of low-tech wireless communication devices can turn deadly.

As per a report by The New York Times, the pagers of Hezbollah were probably compromised during the joint operation between the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Israel's intelligence agency Mossad.

As per the report, Israel probably kept the explosives inside a batch of pagers and embedded a switch in it to detonate the explosives remotely.

Speaking to The New York Times, International Security Program at Center for Strategic and International Studies deputy director Emily Harding said that there are chances of the pagers getting intercepted by Israeli operatives in between the supply chain before they got delivered to Hezbollah.

Taking to X, director of Armament Research Services N R Jenzen-Jones said that the attack's videos suggest that the “explosive devices were integrated into the pagers."

“The scale suggests a complex supply-chain attack, rather than a scenario in which devices were intercepted and modified in transit," he added.

However, some experts argue that modern consumer devices like pagers contain lithium-ion batteries which can explode or catch on fire if they turn too hot or are brought in contact with metals. But considering the scale of the explosion, it appeared highly unlikely that it was caused by just the battery.

According to a report by Sky News Arabia, Pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN), which is a highly explosive material, was reportedly placed by Mossad agents in the batteries of the pagers.

Speaking about the massive impact that Hezbollah suffered from the attack with WION, Fellow, Strategic Studies Programme at Observer Research Foundation Kabir Taneja said, "The major takeaway for Hezbollah for this experience is that Israel’s messaging being it still has accessibility deep into the group’s hierarchy and supply chains. So even if a full scale war is avoidable a clandestine war to degrade Hezbollah is very much on the cards."

Who were the makers of the pagers?

The pagers which blasted and caused massive losses to the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah were made a European distributor, as per the chairperson of a Taiwanese company Gold Apollo.

Speaking to reporters, Gold Apollo founder and chairperson Hsu Ching-kuang said that a contract was signed by his firm with a European distributor - Budapest-based BAC Consulting KFT - for using the Gold Apollo brand.

He added that the contract was signed with the distributor nearly three years ago.

Initially, the Gold Apollo’s other pager and communication products were only imported by the European company.

However, later the company informed Gold Apollo that they wished to create their own pager and asked for the right to use the brand of the Taiwanese company.

Why did Hezbollah use pagers?

For Hezbollah, secrecy has been their most important military strategy. The members of the militant group were known to communicate through an internal communications network.

Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah had earlier asked the members of the militant group and their families in southern Lebanon to throw away their cellphones, as they feared that their movement could be tracked by Israel through those devices.

“Shut it off, bury it, put it in an iron chest and lock it up. The collaborator (with the Israelis) is the cell phone in your hands and those of your wife and your children. This cell phone is the collaborator and the killer," Nasrallah said.

The militant group at that time decided to instead switch to low-tech technology to connect to each other and hence, turned to pagers.

Speaking about the failure of Hezbollah's plan to use pagers as secured communication devices to stop Israel from intercepting their locations, Wood said, "This is the first time Israel has used communication devices as weapons. Hezbollah was already worried about Israel's ability to interfere with its communications. In fact, this is the reason Hezbollah has been using pagers in the first place because earlier in the conflict it worried that Israel was using mobile phones to locate Hezbollah members, including its senior members. So now this means that Hezbollah's plan to use pagers has also been compromised."

So, what will be Hezbollah's next step to create more secure communications among its members after this embarrassing attack allegedly by Israel and will it impact their military ability?

"It will still be possible for Hezbollah leaders to talk with each other directly or to send messages through couriers who can take messages from members to members. However, it can slow down the efficiency of Hezbollah's military operation because such communication strategies are more time-consuming," said Wood, while speaking to WION.

However, Soliman argues that "psychologically, the impact is immense. Hezbollah now faces an existential challenge: its once-trusted equipment is compromised, creating operational paralysis. This communication breakdown will likely force Hezbollah to rethink and overhaul its military operations. Such a transition carries inherent risks, increasing the chances of further operational missteps—gaps that Israel, ever watchful, will be ready to exploit".
