A USA Today report quoted Asian American worker Vaishnavi Jayakumar, originally from Singapore, as alleging that she was discriminated against on a racial basis at Meta where she was ‘layered’ under less experienced white workers.&nbsp;

“I've never felt more keenly that as an Asian woman, I'm destined to be a worker, I'm not destined to be a leader,” USA Today quoted Jayakumar as saying in an interview. “And that's an awful feeling,” she added.

US: Asian Americans file lawsuits against ‘racial bias’ in Silicon Valley top positions

Leon Black, the billionaire co-founder of private equity firm Apollo Global Management Inc, was sued on Monday by a woman who said he raped her two decades ago in the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein's Manhattan mansion.

Cheri Pierson said she had been a cash-strapped single mother who had already given Epstein five massages for $300 each, when the financier arranged in the spring of 2002 for her to massage Black for $300.

She said Black, who was eight inches taller and weighed more than twice as much, without her consent physically overwhelmed her and caused "excruciating pain" in their encounter on the third floor of Epstein's home.

Susan Estrich, a lawyer for Black, called Pierson's lawsuit "categorically false and part of a scheme to extort money from Mr. Black by threatening to destroy his reputation....We intend to defeat these baseless claims."

Pierson's lawsuit in a New York state court in Manhattan seeks unspecified damages from Black for sexual assault and intentional infliction of emotional distress, and from Epstein's estate for negligence.

Her law firm Wigdor LLP also represents Guzel Ganieva, a former Russian model who in June 2021 sued Black for defamation, saying he falsely claimed she tried to extort him after accusing him of rape.

In a Nov. 19 letter to the Wigdor firm, Estrich said: "Mr. Black never sexually assaulted anyone anywhere at any time." She also said Black may bring defamation claims or seek sanctions if Pierson sued.

Lawyers for Epstein's estate did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Black is worth $9 billion according to Forbes magazine.

Pierson sued under New York's Adult Survivors Act, a new law giving sexual assault victims a one-year window to sue their alleged abusers, even if the misconduct occurred long ago and statutes of limitations have expired.

Epstein killed himself in August 2019 in a Manhattan jail cell while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.

His former associate Ghislaine Maxwell is appealing her conviction and 20-year prison sentence for enabling Epstein's abuse of underage girls.

Pierson said Epstein had introduced her to Black, describing him as someone who could "help" her, implying financial help.

Pierson said they met at a bar in the St. Regis Hotel where Black gave her $5,000, ostensibly to reduce her credit card debt.

She said he called later and said "I want to see you," and she refused.

<h2>Deceit and fraud cases in New York</h2>

The Trump Organization, which bears Donald Trump's name, is also on trial in New York for deceit and tax fraud. The business, which manages hotels, golf courses, and other properties globally, allegedly&nbsp;ran a 15-year plan to provide high-level executives perks like fancy cars and residences while avoiding paying taxes on such payments.

Nine charges of tax fraud, grand larceny, and fabricating business documents are brought against two Trump Organization corporations in what prosecutors claim was a 15-year plot to cheat tax authorities by neglecting to declare and pay taxes on employee salaries.

This July, Allen Weisselberg, the former chief financial officer of the Trump Organization, entered a guilty plea for his part in the tax fraud. Despite not helping the prosecution, he recently testified in the trial. The business entered a not-guilty plea.

<h2>Trump vs. New York attorney general</h2>

After a long drawn investigation, New York Attorney General Letitia James filed a lawsuit against Donald Trump, three of his adult children, and the Trump Organization in September. She claimed that they were all complicit in a massive fraud that lasted more than 10 years and was used by the former president to enrich himself.

James said that the Trump Organization, including its hotels and golf courses, was the target of the deception. The complaint alleges that the Trump Organization inflated the worth of his properties using false evaluations, deceiving lenders, insurers, and tax authorities.

<h2>Mar-a-Lago documents: The case of missing government records</h2>

Trump is the subject of a criminal investigation by the US Department of Justice for keeping official documents after leaving office in January 2021, including some that were classified.

During a search that was permitted by the court on August 8 at Trump's Mar-a-Lago home in Florida, the FBI took 11,000 papers. There were about 100 documents classified as such, some of which were also tagged as 'top secret', the most serious classification.

Republican Donald Trump has claimed that the Justice Department is conducting a&nbsp;witch hunt.&nbsp;The confiscated documents are being examined by a special master, Senior U.S. District Judge Raymond Dearie, to see if any of them are covered by executive privilege as claimed by Trump.

A president may keep some papers or information private under the legal theory known as executive privilege.

Asserting that both of these actions are impeding the criminal investigation, the Justice Department has requested a federal appeals court to put a halt to that review and grant it access to the unclassified papers found during the search.

<h2>Defamation case:&nbsp;E. Jean Carroll</h2>

E. Jean Carroll, a former journalist for Elle magazine, filed a defamation lawsuit against Trump in 2019 after he refuted her claim that he sexually assaulted her in the 1990s in a department&nbsp;store&nbsp;in New York City. In order to increase book sales, Trump charged her of lying.

Trump has contended that a federal provision that protects government workers from defamation charges shields him from Carroll's lawsuit. The Manhattan-based 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals determined in September that Trump was a government employee when he labelled Carroll a liar, but left open the issue of whether he was operating in his capacity as president at the time.

On January 10, 2023, an appeals court in Washington, D.C., will hear oral arguments and evaluate the issue.

Even if the defamation case is dropped, Carroll intends to sue Trump for violence and purposeful infliction of mental distress in accordance with New York state law.

<h2>Election rigging investigation in Georgia</h2>

The investigation into Trump's alleged attempts to sway the outcome of the 2020 election in Georgia was given extraordinary grand jury empanelled status in May.

A call that Republican Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger had from Trump on January 2, 2021 is one of the main topics of the inquiry. In order to "discover" the necessary number of votes to reverse Trump's Georgia loss, Raffensperger was tasked by Trump.

Trump could have broken at least three Georgia election-related criminal crimes, according to legal experts: conspiracy to commit election fraud, criminal solicitation to commit election fraud, and deliberate meddling with the conduct of elections.

<h2>US Capitol attack</h2>

The matter of whether Trump violated the law in his attempts to avenge his loss in the 2020 election is being looked into by a House of Representatives committee looking into the assault on the US Capitol by Trump supporters on January 6, 2021. The certification of the election results by Congress was a goal of the protesters.

The committee subpoenaed Trump in October to speak under oath and provide records.

Republican committee vice-chair Liz Cheney has stated the group may recommend potential criminal charges against Trump to the Justice Department.

Trump's federal crimes may or may not be investigated by the Justice Department. In the upcoming weeks, the panel will probably provide its findings.

The panel's inquiry has been criticised by Trump as being politically motivated.

More than 90 per cent of the locations are franchised, and McDonald's has long maintained it should not be liable for how employees in franchised restaurants behave.

Chief Executive Steve Easterbrook said his company has improved and more clearly defined its harassment policies, has trained most franchise owners, and will be training front-line employees and setting up a complaint hotline.

"McDonald's is sending a clear message that we are committed to creating and sustaining a culture of trust where employees feel safe, valued and respected," Easterbrook wrote in letters this week to Illinois Senator Tammy Duckworth and "Top Chef" host Padma Lakshmi, who supports the workers' cause.

The 25 cases include three new lawsuits, two by workers who previously filed charges, and charges filed with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC).

Jamelia Fairley, a single mother who makes $9.60 an hour at a corporate-owned McDonald's in Sanford, Florida, told reporters she went to the EEOC after a co-worker began groping her, rubbing against her and saying he could "give me a ride."

She said that after she reported the harassment, McDonald's transferred but did not fire her harasser, while her boss cut her weekly hours to seven from 25,

"Trying to raise a 2-year-old on $67 a week is, well, I can't do it," Fairley said.

Sharyn Tejani, director of the Time's Up fund, which is part of the National Women's Law Center, said having to put up with workplace harassment should not be a cost of making a living.

A separate settlement with nearly all US&nbsp;state attorneys general over excess diesel emissions will be announced on Tuesday and is expected to be more than $500 million. This&nbsp;would&nbsp;push the total to over $15 billion, a separate source briefed on the matter said.

Spokeswomen for the US&nbsp;environmental protection agency and Volkswagen declined to comment.

Reuters reported earlier the initial VW settlement would not include civil penalties under the U.S. Clean Air Act or address about 85,000 larger 3.0 litre Audi, Porsche and VW vehicles that emitted less pollution than 2.0 litre vehicles. A deal covering the 3.0 litre vehicles may still be months away.

The settlement does not address lawsuits from investors or a criminal investigation by the Justice Department.

Owners will have until December 2018 to decide whether to sell back vehicles or opt for&nbsp;fixes that may not eliminate all excess emissions.

VW cannot resell or export the vehicles bought back unless EPA approves a fix, Reuters reported last week.

The settlement, the largest ever automotive buyback offer in U.S. history and most expensive auto industry scandal, stems from the German automaker's admission in September 2015 that it intentionally misled regulators by installing secret software that allowed U.S. vehicles to emit up to 40 times legally allowable pollution. VW still must reach agreement with regulators on whether it will offer to buyback 85,000 larger 3.0 liter Porsche, Audi and SUVs that emitted up to nine times legally allowable pollution and how much it may face in civil fines for admitting to violating the Clean Air Act. Reuters reported earlier the initial VW settlement would not include civil penalties under the U.S. Clean Air Act or address about 85,000 larger 3.0 litre Audi, Porsche and VW vehicles that emitted less pollution than 2.0 litre vehicles. A deal covering the 3.0 litre vehicles may still be months away. The settlement does not address lawsuits from investors or a criminal investigation by the Justice Department. Owners will have until December 2018 to decide whether to sell back vehicles or opt for fixes that may not eliminate all excess emissions. VW cannot resell or export the vehicles bought back unless EPA approves a fix, Reuters reported last week. VW, the world's second largest automaker, has seen U.S. VW brand sales suffer in the wake of the crisis.
