Neeraj Chopra, India's&nbsp;first-ever winner of an Olympic athletics gold medal, added another feather to his illustrious hat on Wednesday (February 2) when he was&nbsp;nominated for the 2022 Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year Award. The 23-year-old is one of the six nominees for the prestigious award. 
 
Neeraj's life has changed for the good post&nbsp;his record throw measuring 87.58 metres in the men's final of the javelin event in Tokyo 2020. After securing a top spot in the podium, he became the first Indian track and field athlete to win an individual Olympic gold medal in Tokyo 2020, joining&nbsp;Abhinav Bindra to become only the second Indian to return with a gold.

Neeraj Chopra, India`s first ever winner of an Olympic athletics gold medal, has been nominated for the 2022 Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year Award. He is one of the six nominees for the prestigious Award. 
 
With his second throw measuring 87.58 metres, Chopra became the first Indian track and field athlete to win an individual Olympic gold medal during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the other being Abhinav Bindra in air rifle in 2008. 
 
He is only the third Indian athlete to be nominated for a Laureus Award, after wrestler Vinesh Phogat in 2019 and cricket maestro Sachin Tendulkar, who won the Laureus Sporting Moment Award 2000-2020, which marked the emotional moment during the 2011 ICC World Cup, when his team carried him on their shoulders in a lap of honour after India`s win. 
 
"I`m delighted to be nominated for this Laureus Award and it`s a great honour for me to be recognised in the wider sporting world for what I achieved in Tokyo," said an elated Chopra, after being nominated for the award. 
 
"From being a kid in a small village in rural India who only took up sport to get fit, to standing on top of an Olympic podium, it`s been quite an eventful journey so far. I feel privileged to be able to represent my country and win India medals at the global stage, and now to have this recognition from Laureus and be considered alongside such exceptional athletes is a really special feeling," he added. 
 
Apart from Neeraj, the other five sportspersons who have been nominated for for the Breakthrough Award are -- Britain`s Emma Raducanu, who became a global tennis sensation when she won the US Open at the age of 18, Russia`s Daniil Medvedev, who won the men`s title at Flushing Meadows, FC Barcelona`s football prodigy Pedri, aged 19, voted best young player at the Ballon d`Or, Yulimar Rojas, who broke the 26-year-old triple jump world record, and swimmer Ariarne Titmus, aged 20, who twice beat champion Katie Ledecky at 200 and 400m in Tokyo. 
 
A panel of more than 1,300 of the leading sports journalists and broadcasters in the world have selected the nominees in each of seven categories for this year`s Laureus World Sports Awards. The Winners will be revealed in April, following a vote by the Laureus World Sports Academy, the world`s ultimate sports jury, made up of 71 of the greatest sporting legends of all time.

He isn't involved with Indian tennis but the legendary <a href="http://www.wionews.com/search?q=Boris+Becker">Boris Becker</a> knows that the country's top stars have been "fighting a little" and urged the trio of Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupathi and Sania Mirza to work together for the sport's sake while speaking ahead of the Laureus World Sports Awards.&nbsp;

Talking about Indian tennis, which has not been able to produce world-class singles players in the last three decades, Becker said that the trio (all doubles specialists) need to unite to take the game forward in their country.&nbsp;

"India has a long success history in tennis. You have to have large pool of players, so that some of them go on to win titles. At the moment you don't see them but I would say it is a matter of time," the German great told PTI.&nbsp;

Out of the national team reckoning for a while now, India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh says he will continue playing cricket till 2019 before taking a call on his retirement.

Yuvraj, who last played for India in June 2017 in an ODI, said the upcoming IPL holds great significance for him as a good performance in the T20 event will help him keep in the fray for a spot in the 2019 World Cup.

&quot;I am looking forward to a good IPL. It&#39;s a very important tournament for me as it will only set me to play cricket till 2019. I am looking to play cricket till 2019, whatever cricket I get to play and take a call after that,&quot; Yuvraj told PTI in an exclusive interview on the sidelines of the 18th Laureus World Sports Awards in Monaco.

A regular in the Indian ODI team till the 2011 World Cup triumph before his career was jeopardised by a rare germ cell cancer, Yuvraj&#39;s only regret was that he could not cement his place in the Indian Test side.

&quot;Definitely, in the first 6-7 years of my career when I was at my best I did not get a lot of opportunities because there were such great players in the (Test) team and when I got an opportunity I was diagnosed with cancer. So that regret will always be there but these things are never in my control. I am just looking forward to whatever cricket I get to play,&quot; the 36-year-old all-rounder said.

Yuvraj, who is here as a Laureus ambassador from India, praised Virat Kohli and his men for the character they showed to bounce back in the limited overs series after the close 1-2 loss in the Test rubber.

&quot;I think it is a pretty great performance. They showed a lot of character after losing the Test series. It was as a hard-fought Test series, could have gone either way. But it was a very convincing win in the ODI series. Kohli led from the front with some big runs,&quot; the left-handed batsman said.

&quot;Spinners bowled very well especially Kuldeep (Yadav) and (Yuzvendra) Chahal and got South Africa into trouble. And then they stepped on the gas and won the T20 series 2-1. Going abroad playing three series winning two definitely shows India?s dominance.&quot;

Yuvraj himself has climbed up the ladders of age group cricket to stand where he is today and so he offered some words of advice for the likes of young Prthivi Shaw and Shubman Gill, who have already fetched big money from their respective franchises in the last IPL auctions.
