About one million Rohingya live in makeshift shelters of bamboo and tarpaulins in dozens of scattered camps cut out of cleared forest land on the slopes of small hills, where landslides are a regular threat.

In Sylhet, lashing rain and rivers swollen by flooding upstream in India also swamped heavily populated areas.&nbsp;

"More than 17,000 people have been taken to shelters only in Sylhet district," senior local government official Sheikh Russel Hasan said, warning rivers were still rising.

Much of Bangladesh is made up of deltas as the Himalayan rivers of the Ganges and Brahmaputra slowly wind towards the sea.

Floods in 2022 in Sylhet were some of the worst on record, leaving millions stranded and around a hundred killed.

In a recent publication in the journal The Seismic Record, Ezgi Karasözen, a research seismologist at UAF Geophysical Institute, highlighted the urgency of their work in the context of climate change-induced glacier retreats, particularly in vulnerable regions like the southern coast of Alaska.

“The warming climate is leading to the retreat of glaciers, leaving behind valleys whose mountainsides and hillsides have lost their support,” Karasozen said.

Their system, currently operational in the Barry Arms area of Prince William Sound, utilises existing seismic station data to swiftly identify landslide-induced long-period waves amid a cacophony of seismic signals.

Karasozen elucidated, “When an earthquake occurs, there are instruments that measure the height of sea waves, and tsunami warning centres are on alert after an earthquake."

Now, landslide tsunamis can be detected in minutes: Study

The strategic Jammu-Srinagar National Highway remained closed for the fourth consecutive day on Thursday (Feb 22) following landslides at more than a dozen places in the Ramban district, said the traffic department officials.

Over a thousand vehicles were stranded due to the massive landslides at multiple places along the 270-km stretch which connects Kashmir to the rest of the country.

The highway has been shut since Monday (Feb 19) and the efforts for the restoration of the road for the smooth movement of traffic are still underway.

According to the officials, the traffic was partially restored on Wednesday (Feb 21) afternoon, however, a fresh landslide at Kishtwari Pather near Banihal again blocked the highway.

"Jammu-Srinagar National Highway is still blocked due to major landslides at Kishtwari Pather and Banihal, and intermittent shooting stones at several places between Nashree and Banihal," the Jammu and Kashmir Traffic Police said.

People have been advised to avoid taking the route until the road is clear.

<h2>Construction worker killed in landslide</h2>

A construction worker lost his life in the landslide along the Jammu-Srinagar national highway on Thursday (Feb 22), said the officials.

The deceased, identified as Deshpaul (31) from the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, was hit by the landslide outside his company headquarters near Seri in Ramban district around 8.30 am today, said the police officials.

According to the officials, Deshpaul was on his way to the office mess for breakfast when the incident took place.

An official of the traffic department said that the restoration work was in progress and would take some time.

According to the officials, the traffic was partially restored on Wednesday (Feb 21) afternoon, however, a fresh landslide at Kishtwari Pather near Banihal again blocked the highway. "Jammu-Srinagar National Highway is still blocked due to major landslides at Kishtwari Pather and Banihal, and intermittent shooting stones at several places between Nashree and Banihal," the Jammu and Kashmir Traffic Police said. People have been advised to avoid taking the route until the road is clear. “My fellow Tanzanians, this is a tragedy,” he added.&nbsp;

<h2>Impact of flood, landslides</h2>

Zuhura Yunus, spokesperson for President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s office, said the floods and landslides had affected 1,150 households or 5,600 people, and destroyed 750 acres of farmland. Tanzania’s government said they have deployed 400 rescue workers in the northern Hanang district.

However, the rescue workers are facing a number of challenges including defective telecommunications, and blocked or damaged roads, said Yunus, in a statement on Monday.&nbsp;

“President Samia, who has been in Dubai for the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP28) has decided to cut her trip short and arrive in the country as soon as possible to deal with this disaster,” she added.&nbsp;

Queen Sendiga, commissioner of the Northern Manyara region, told reporters, late Sunday that the local authorities are still searching for bodies trapped in the mud. At least 100 houses have been swallowed by a landslide in the village of Katesh in Hanang district, said Sendiga.&nbsp;

She also said that people from around 28 households are still missing.&nbsp;

Tanzania, like other countries in East Africa, has been hit with weeks of torrential rain and flooding after witnessing an unprecedented drought.&nbsp;

Several local media reports citing officials have said that at least 27 people have been killed while dozens of others are missing. Meanwhile, rescue efforts were hampered by floods but continued on Monday after a landslide in the district of Mbankolo, northwest of Yaounde, on Sunday evening.&nbsp;

A report by BBC citing a local radio station said that the death toll could be as high as 40 since many people are still missing and residents have been forced to pull bodies out of the debris with their bare hands due to the floods.

The poor neighbourhood of Mbankolo is said to be among the worst affected by the disaster. According to public broadcaster CRTV and a local official, torrential rainfall caused a dam containing a man-made lake situated on higher ground to burst.

“Yesterday we pulled out 15 people who had died and this morning we have found eight,” fire service official David Petatoa Poufong told reporters. He added, “We are still looking.” &nbsp;

Housing and Urban Development Minister Celestine Ketcha Court told BBC that the team of rescuers would “work all day long to continue finding people”.&nbsp;

An AFP journalist reported that a couple of exhausted-looking local residents were seen holding corners of a large sheet carrying what one said were the bodies of two children.&nbsp;

The local police have cordoned off the site as rescue operations continued. Images broadcast on TV showed an entire section of a hill had collapsed with parts of the houses that remained apparently constructed from wood, dried earth bricks and metal sheeting, reported AFP.&nbsp;

“We’ve seen the wall, which had been built by the Germans to contain the water, buckle under the pressure,” Cyprien Djou, a local town hall official told AFP. He added, “The lake completely overflowed onto the homes built on the hillside.”&nbsp;

"To become good human beings, what you have to do? No to meat eating," he further said and then went on to ask the students to vow not to eat meat.

There was no response from Mr Behera on the controversy. His comments attracted criticism from netizens.

"The collapse is complete. These superstitious fools will destroy whatever little was built in 70 years," Sandeep Manudhane, an entrepreneur and IIT Delhi alumni, said on X.

Gautam Menon, a professor of biophysics, said, "In the current dispensation, having views like those of the director of IIT Mandi featured here is a feature, not a bug. It's simply sad." This is not the first time Behera has stir a row with his controversial comments. Last year, he hit the headlines for claiming that he was involved in an act of exorcism to rid his friend's apartment and family of "evil spirits" by chanting "holy mantras".

Cloudbursts, landslides in Himachal happening because people eat meat: IIT Mandi Director

A massive landslide was reported in Shimla’s Summer Hill area on Wednesday, an official said. A search and rescue operation was launched after the word of the incident got out and sniffer dogs and rescuers were at the spot at the time of filing this report. On Tuesday, 5 to 7 houses collapsed in Shimla’s Krishna Nagar area following a landslide. According to officials, some residents were feared trapped in the debris, and NDRF, SDRF, and state police personnel were leading the rescue operations. 
 
“Our primary focus is to rescue more and more people. One casualty has been reported so far. All agencies are working to save lives.&nbsp;About 10-15 houses have been vacated and the occupants shifted to safe places. The loss of property is yet to be ascertained," Shimla SP Sanjeev Gandhi said earlier.

He said about 400 out of a total of 1,220 blocked roads have been restored to their normal state. The CM also issued directives to swiftly reinstate the electricity and water schemes that have been adversely affected.

"Due to the urban expansion of Shimla, torrential rains have led to the uprooting of more than 500 trees, posing potential challenges for local residents. To alleviate these concerns, the Forest Department was directed to swiftly and properly dispose of the fallen trees. Adequate manpower should be deployed to ensure efficient execution of this task,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority (USDMA) has reportedly taken the initiative to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the load-bearing capacity of major towns within Uttarakhand.

This move includes fifteen towns, including tourist destinations like Mussoorie, Lansdowne, and Nainital. "The scientific and technical study would be done by experts and on the basis of their recommendations, construction works would be approved in the towns, especially in the hill areas,"&nbsp;Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami told the media outlet Times of India.&nbsp;

India: At least 55 dead in floods, landslides as incessant rains lash Himachal Pradesh

At least three people were killed after floods and landslides caused by heavy rains in northeastern and central parts of Slovenia, said officials, on Friday (August 4). Meanwhile, no deaths or injuries were immediately reported in neighbouring southern Austria, where some villages were disrupted due to floods.&nbsp;

<h2>Slovenia on ‘red alert’</h2>

The Slovenian environmental agency issued a “red alert” – the highest level&nbsp;– after a month’s amount of rain fell within 24 hours in the capital Ljubljana, along with Maribor and Celje. “Three people have died over the last 24 hours in weather-related incidents,” police spokeswoman Maja Adlesic told AFP.&nbsp;

Among those killed&nbsp;were two Dutch citizens in the mountains surrounding Kranj affected by the storms, reported Slovenian news agency STA. The third person was said to be an elderly Slovenian woman who&nbsp;died in the flooded town of Kamnik. 
 
However, the exact circumstances of their deaths remain unknown and are currently under investigation, said the police.&nbsp;The Dutch officials also confirmed the deaths but not the cause. 
 
According to the country’s meteorologists, heavy rains will continue for at least the next 24 hours. Officials in Slovenia, on Friday, also warned of more floods in other areas because of swiftly swelling rivers.

<h2>Damage and evacuations in parts of Slovenia</h2>

Authorities have ordered the&nbsp;evacuation of several thousand people in parts of the town of Celje along the surging Savinja River. This comes after the same river swept away houses and caused landslides in the town of Ljubno.&nbsp;

According to Slovenian media reports, flooding has caused the closure of the highway connecting the capital Ljubljana with the country’s north as well as some railway lines. This comes after rivers in the nearby areas have overflowed, and bridges as well as several houses have reportedly been destroyed.&nbsp;

So far, around 16,000 households suffered power cuts and several villages were reported to be inaccessible. “Some areas are completely cut off and communication is also difficult,” said the country’s civil protection chief Srecko Sestan.&nbsp;

This comes as rescuers, on Friday struggled to reach flooded areas and issued a public call for rubber boats in parts of the county which had been cut off because of road closures and impassibility due to landslides.

In the town of Skofja Loka, vehicles and trucks were submerged or taken by torrents, as per Reuters, people were evacuated using helicopters. “We have not seen floods like these not just in 500 years, but in a 1,000 years,” Roman Kocilija, chief of the rescuers in the village of Most pri Komendi, told Slovenia’s N1 television.&nbsp;

The administration for civil protection and disaster relief recorded more than 1,000 weather-related incidents within 12 hours across the country, reported STA. Additionally, over 100 buildings including a sports hall were flooded in Skofja Loka where roads were also blocked.&nbsp;

“The situation is serious,” Defence Minister Marjan Sarec told reporters, adding that the army had joined rescue and firefighter teams to help citizens in the most affected areas. He also urged people to stay at home and not drive anywhere.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob returned to the country after&nbsp;cutting&nbsp;his vacation short and&nbsp;met&nbsp;with civil protection staff on Friday afternoon.

<h2>What’s happening in Austria?</h2>

Similarly, in Austria roads to some villages in the southern state of Carinthia were blocked, reported the local authorities, on Friday while the district of Volkermarkt, bordering Slovenia particularly badly affected.&nbsp;

Residents in St. Paul in the Lavanttal Valley of Carinthia were also asked to stay on the upper floors and avoid basements and bridges. As of Friday morning, around 4,000 households were without electricity, as per the utility company Energie Steiermark.&nbsp;

<h2>Croatia and Bosnia next?</h2>

Forecasters in Slovenia also warned that the heavy rain and floods are expected to spread to neighbouring Croatia and Bosnia further to the south.&nbsp;
