Even with the current global average heating of 1.14°C over the past decade, an analysis revealed that people, on average, faced 86 days of health-threatening high temperatures during 2018-2022.

Alarmingly, over 60 per cent of these occurrences were more than twice as likely due to man-made climate change.&nbsp;

The impact on health was evident, with an 85 per cent increase in heat-related deaths among individuals aged over 65 from 2013-2022, surpassing the expected 38 per cent increase based on unchanged temperatures since 1991-2000.

The economic ramifications were substantial, with the total value of losses from extreme weather events reaching an estimated $264 billion in 2022, marking a 23 per cent increase compared to 2010-2014.&nbsp;

Heat exposure contributed to a staggering 490 billion potential labour hours lost globally in 2022, reflecting an almost 42 per cent surge from 1991-2000. Notably, income losses disproportionately affected the GDP of low-income (6.1 per cent) and middle-income countries (3.8 per cent). These escalating losses not only pose a threat to livelihoods but also curtail the ability to effectively cope with and recover from the consequences of climate change.

However, all evidence indicates that diabetes prevalence is increasing worldwide, primarily due to a rise in obesity caused by multiple factors,” wrote the research authors. Globally, one in four or 27 per cent of women are victims of violence at the hands of an intimate partner before the age of 50, according to a study published in The Lancet.

The study, carried out by researchers from McGill University and the World Health Organization (WHO) on more than 2 million women in 161 countries, showed that one in seven women (or 13 per cent) experienced intimate partner violence.

In addition, the analysis points to high levels of violence against young women. Around 24 per cent of those between the ages of 15 and 19 reported that they had experienced domestic violence in their lifetime.

Researchers from McGill University and the WHO noted that, while the numbers are alarming, the true scale of violence is likely much higher, given that the study was based on self-reported experiences.

Women may be reluctant to report their experiences due to the stigmatised nature of the issue, they explained.

"Intimate partner violence against women - which includes physical and sexual violence by husbands, boyfriends, and other partners - is highly prevalent globally," noted Mathieu Maheu-Giroux, a professor at McGill University.

According to the researchers, there were regional differences between high- and low-income countries, with a lower prevalence of cases reported both in terms of violence over the past year and in a lifetime.

Africa, South Asia, and parts of South America had the highest lifetime prevalence of violence among women aged 15 to 49. Among the regions, with the lowest lifetime domestic violence estimates, Central Asia and Central Europe ranked highest.

Total antibody levels start to wane six weeks after complete immunisation with Pfizer and AstraZeneca vaccines, and can reduce by more than 50 per cent over 10 weeks, according to a study published in The Lancet journal.

The researchers from University College London (UCL) in the UK noted that if the antibody levels carry on dropping at this rate, there are concerns that the protective effects of the vaccines may also begin to wear off, particularly against new variants.

However, they said, how soon that might happen cannot be predicted yet.

The UCL Virus Watch study also found that antibody levels are substantially higher following two doses of the Pfizer vaccine than after two shots of the AstraZeneca preventive, known as Covishield in India.

Antibody levels were also much higher in vaccinated people than those with prior SARS-CoV-2 infection, they said.

"The levels of antibody following both doses of either the AstraZeneca or Pfizer vaccine were initially very high, which is likely to be an important part of why they are so protective against severe COVID-19," said Madhumita Shrotri from UCL Institute of Health Informatics.

"However, we found these levels dropped substantially over two to three months," Shrotri said in a statement.

The findings based on data from over 600 people aged 18 and above were consistent across all groups of people regardless of age, chronic illnesses or sex, according to the researchers.

The authors highlight that although the clinical implications of waning antibody levels are not yet clear, some decline was expected and current research shows that vaccines remain effective against severe disease.

For Pfizer, antibody levels reduced from a median of 7506 Units per millilitre (U/mL) at 2141 days, to 3320 U/mL at 70 or more days.

For the AstraZeneca vaccine, antibody levels reduced from a median of 1201 U/mL at 020 days to 190 U/mL at 70 or more days, over a five-fold reduction.

"When we are thinking about who should be prioritised for booster doses our data suggests that those vaccinated earliest, particularly with the AstraZeneca vaccine, are likely to now have the lowest antibody levels," said Professor Rob Aldridge from UCL Institute of Health Informatics.

The findings support recommendations that clinically vulnerable adults, those aged 70 years or over, and all residents of care homes for older adults should be prioritised for booster doses, the researchers said.

In addition, those who were vaccinated with the AstraZeneca vaccine are likely to have much lower antibody levels than those vaccinated with the Pfizer vaccine, they noted.

"This may also need to be considered when deciding who should be prioritised when boosters are rolled out," Aldridge said in the statement.

The team acknowledged certain limitations in the data, including a small sample size for some groups.

The researchers noted that each individual only contributed one sample, so they cannot yet confirm how quickly antibody levels drop for each individual, or whether these would continue to drop or reach a stable level over the next few months.

They also noted that different people will have different levels of immunity depending on the virus neutralising ability of their antibodies as well as their T-cell responses.

"Even when measurable antibody levels are low, there is likely to be continuing immune memory that could offer long-term protection," the authors of the study noted.

They said further research will be important to establish if there is an antibody level threshold needed for protection against severe disease.

The research evaluated 69 studies into corporal punishment conducted over the past 20 years. According to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), almost 300 million, or three-quarters, of the world's two- to four-year-old children are subjected to psychological abuse, physical punishment, or both by their caregivers at home. Sixty-two countries have banned the practice, which is increasingly seen as a form of violence. The consistency of these findings indicates that physical punishment is harmful to children and that policy remedies are warranted. "These results suggest that the CovidNudge test, which can be performed at a patient’s bedside without the need to handle any sample material, has comparable accuracy to standard laboratory testing," Professor Graham Cooke, lead author of the study from the Department of Infectious Disease at Imperial College London, said.

The Lancet paper described the test, which requires one nostril swab, as "a sensitive, specific, and rapid point of care test for the presence of SARS-CoV-2 without laboratory handling or sample pre-processing".

Health Secretary Matt Hancock told LBC radio that Britain was rolling out the tests across hospitals.

"The critical thing in terms of usefulness is that the machine doesn`t need to be in a lab - it is about the size of a shoebox - therefore you can put one, say, in an A&amp;E (accident and emergency) department and they can know whether people coming in have got the coronavirus or not," Hancock said.

Hancock said the machines could also be deployed at other locations such as schools.

Each box can run one test at a time so could process about 16 tests per day, said a spokeswoman for the company that produces the tests.

Now, The Lancet medical journal is itself concerned about the findings. Hydroxychloroquine was called a miracle drug and then a potential killer. What changed the verdict was The Lancet study. It claimed HCQ led to a higher risk of death and caused an irregular heartbeat. Soon, the drug's fame evaporated. The WHO suspended HCQ trials. Now, more than hundred scientists have questioned The Lancet study that called the drug dangerous. The Lancet medical journal has also alerted its readers. It is like the retraction of an incorrectly made comment and now serious scientific questions have been raised. Rightly put it's an expression of concern. The journal is now commissioning an independent audit of the data but the scientists want the WHO to carry out the checks. The Lancet study involved 96,000 COVID-19 patients spread across six continents. It involved patients from as many as 671 hospitals with 15,000 patients given doses of HCQ. The study found patients were at a greater risk of dying. They were also at a higher risk of developing abnormal heart rhythm. Now the question is: what made scientists doubt The Lancet study? The haste with which it was conducted analysing data, writing the paper and peer reviews -- all completed in five weeks much faster than usual. The authors have refused to identify any of the hospitals that contributed to patient data or name the countries where they were located. A data scientist has even called the study fabrication of data. Moreover, one of the authors is also the founder of Surgisphere which is a Chicago-based medical data analytics company. The study entirely relied on the data provided by the firm. Now, the affiliation has come under the scanner. The Lancet medical journal had to issue corrections after they got the death toll wrong. However, the WHO acted on this report and suspended the study on HCQ. India strongly opposed the suspension of trials. The Indian council of medical research(ICMR) has consistently backed the use of HCQ. ICMR studies have shown the positive effect of HCQ as a preventive drug. In a recent study, ICMR found that HCQ with personal protective equipment together cut COVID-19 risk by 80 per cent. Essentially, ICMR findings are contrary to The Lancet study. Studies in India found no side-effects other than nausea, vomiting and occasional palpitation. The drug has been in use for nearly 100 years in various avatars. It is also used for some other diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and type-2 diabetes. The drug's uses and dangers are well-known. As ICMR said right dosage and monitoring should do the trick. but, let's place our trust in the scientific community to tell us more.
