'Here to watch Asia Cup matches....': BCCI VP Rajeev Shukla in Lahore

A damning report coming from the Punjab province of Pakistan has revealed that more boys are subjected to sexual abuse than girls. The 'confidential' report accessed by Dawn newspaper has been compiled by the home department which presents a terrifying ordeal for the authorities as well as the victims.

In the first five and a half months of 2023, a total of 1,390 incidents of child abuse were reported in Punjab, out of which 959 (69 per cent) were against boys while 431 (31 per cent) were against girls.

The child abuse data was collected region-wise using the field staff. The most number of child abuse incidents (220) were reported in Gujranwala region/division followed by DG Khan (199). Other regions such as Faisalabad (186), Multan (140), Bahawalpur (129), Sheikhupura (128), Sahiwal (127) and Sargodha (103) did not fare any better.

The findings unveiled that Rawalpindi region (69) and Lahore City (89) reported the lowest crime against children than other divisions of the province.

Of the total registered FIRs, challans were submitted in 799 cases, 441 were currently under investigation and 149 had been closed/dismissed. Disturbingly enough, out of the total sexual abusers facing trial, 55 per cent were the neighbours of the victim, 32 per cent were strangers and 13 per cent were relatives.

“The child sexual abuse is influenced by a range of social factors in Pakistan, and patriarchal norms, power imbalances, poverty, illiteracy and social inequalities contribute to the vulnerability of the children," the report reads.

Although, these were not the absolute numbers as most cases did not see the light of day. The report mentioned that the unwillingness of the parents to subject their children to legal and medical hassle was one of the reasons why sexual abuse cases remained underreported.

“It is also a matter of concern that a number of cases remain unreported. In our society, fear and cultural taboos make it difficult to report the crime," read the report.

An Associated Press report in 2020 noted that the majority of sexual abuse crimes against children in Pakistan took place in religious schools. There are more than 22,000 registered madrassas in Pakistan, teaching more than two million children. But many more religious schools are unregistered.

Shocking report reveals more boys are sexually abused than girls in Pakistan's Punjab

Monsoon has begun in South Asia and Pakistan is worried the incessant downpour has caused disruption in the city of Lahore. The disaster has claimed over seven lives.

Rains wreck havoc in Pakistan's Lahore, incessant downpour leaves 7 dead

At least seven people died as incessant rains battered Pakistan’s Lahore city on Wednesday, breaking a 30-year record.

The city received 291mm of rain, and over a dozen areas recorded more than 200mm of rain, Commissioner Lahore Mohammad Ali Randhawa said, Geo News reported.

Randhawa said that this is the first time that a large amount of rainfall is being witnessed in such a short amount of time, something that has not been seen for the past 30 years. He attributed the sudden downpours to climate change and strong monsoons.

Last year, 238mm of rainfall was recorded while 288mm was received in 2018, he said.

"Three people were electrocuted, two died after roofs collapsed, and a child drowned after rainwater accumulated," Punjab interim Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi told journalists in Lahore.

In an update on his official Twitter handle, the interim CM said the death toll had risen to seven.

Lahore to witness another bout of rain

He said that the record-breaking rain has caused flooding in urban areas and the canals are also overflowing.

“We have dispatched teams across the city to clear main roads and drain water from submerged areas.”

“All the cabinet members and administration are in the field to clear the water. I am also monitoring the situation in the field and getting updates from all over Lahore continuously,” the chief minister said as he visited the city to oversee relief operations.

The interim CM said that the city will likely witness another spell of rain at 9 pm and added that the authorities were taking appropriate measures to tackle any weather-related incidents.

The Met Office also predicted that intermittent showers would continue to batter Lahore for the next 24 hours.

The heavy downpour is in line with the predictions of the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) last week which warned that moist currents from the Arabian Sea would penetrate the upper parts of the country, and a westerly wave was also likely to enter the upper parts of the country on Monday, causing heavy rainfall from July 4 to 7 across the country.

Flood warning

The Met officials have issued a warning of high-level flooding in the Chenab River due to heavy downpours.

It also said that the upper catchments of Rivers Sutlej and Ravi could also swell due to widespread heavy to very heavy rainfall.

It further said that the flood situation in rivers Ravi and Sutlej would depend upon releases from India and high to very high-level flooding is also expected in the canals of Rivers Ravi and Chenab.

Punjab Police raided former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan's Zaman Park residence to arrest 'terrorists', but only returned with 'water and biscuits'. The claims were made by Khan's chief security officer Iftikhar Ghuman after the police came knocking on Friday, having obtained warrants to conduct a detailed search at Khan's residence. "I think they have understood that there is nothing here. The only thing they got here was water and biscuits," Ghuman told reporters after the search operation. "We opened the doors of the house for them in front of you. Now you ask them what they got," he added. Earlier this week, the Punjab government claimed that Khan and his Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) party members were harbouring "30 to 40 terrorists" in the residential property. Khan was given an ultimatum of 24 hours to hand over the accused but no action was taken, even after the expiry of the deadline. Notably, a team comprising the likes of Lahore Commissioner Muhammad Ali Randhawa, DIG Operations Sadiq Dogar, Lahore Deputy Commissioner Rafia Haider and SSP Operations Sohaib amongst others reached Khan's residence to conduct the search operation. Meanwhile, the Lahore administration also brought up heavy machinery to remove encroachments outside the PTI chairman's house. Khan is currently facing a litany of cases with charges ranging from corruption to terrorism. After the Toshakhana corruption case hearing was adjourned till next month, Khan, on Friday received another bout of relief after his interim pre-arrest bail was extended by Lahore's anti-terrorism court till June 2 in three terrorism-related cases. Police in armoured vehicles arrived outside the Imran Khan's Zaman Park residence in Lahore on Tuesday, with intentions to arrest the chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) party.

Breaking News: Police vehicles gather outside Imran Khan's Lahore residence

Ever since the former Pakistani prime minister Imran Khan was ousted from power in a no-confidence motion, the political slugfest has seen some high-end drama in the South Asian nation. Khan has been on the radar of the caretaker Punjab government which had imposed Section 144 in Lahore attributing it to a Pakistan Super League match in the Qaddafi Stadium and a marathon race in the city.

The former Pakistani PM was vying to hold out the rally for last two days. However, his efforts were stomped on by the Election Commission or the Lahore High Court who denied the relief to Imran-led Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

After a twin failure, Imran was finally given a nod to take out the rally. However, the interim Punjab government gave the relaxation while cautioning that the rally carries “high-security risk due to the general and specific threats against political gatherings and previous instance of attack on the ex-prime minister."

Not just this, the nod was given after an undertaking from the organizer to the “effect that in case of any untoward incident he shall be held responsible”. This ensued against the backdrop of last year's assassination attempt on Imran Khan which wounded him and killed one of his supporters. A gunman had opened fire at a campaign truck carrying Khan.

But this time, Imran Khan was in a bulletproof vehicle when he set off for the rally which kicked off from Zaman Park on Monday. Upon reaching Data Darbar, Imran addressed his supporters from inside his vehicle. He announced that a power show will be held at Minar-i-Pakistan in Lahore at 2pm. “This rally will be in the day and it will be my sixth in Minar-i-Pakistan in the last 12 years,” he added.

However, the interim Punjab government gave the relaxation while cautioning that the rally carries “high-security risk due to the general and specific threats against political gatherings and previous instance of attack on the ex-prime minister." Not just this, the nod was given after an undertaking from the organizer to the “effect that in case of any untoward incident he shall be held responsible”.
