Five soldiers died after their tank met with an accident while they were crossing a river during an exercise near the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Leh's Daulat Beg Oldi area on Saturday (June 29) morning.

Rescue officials have recovered body of one soldier, while the four others are still missing.

A Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) is among the five killed in the accident.

The soldiers were on a training mission and were crossing the Bodhi River near Mandir Morh, 148 kilometres from Leh, on their T-72 tank when suddenly the water levels began to rise, official sources said.&nbsp;

The tank and the soldiers were submerged in the swelling river, they added.

A rescue operation has been launched.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh led the nation in mourning the deaths.

"Deeply saddened at the loss of lives of five of our brave Indian Army soldiers in an unfortunate accident while getting the tank across a river in Ladakh. We will never forget the exemplary service of our gallant soldiers to the nation. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. The nation stands firm with them during this hour of grief," he posted on X.

Indian defence minister Rajnath Singh and Japanese defence minister Kishi Nobuo on Tuesday discussed aggressive actions by China in the region and called for increased cooperation in the maritime domain.

While "free and open maritime order based on the rule of law" being discussed found mention in readouts issued by both Indian and Japanese defence ministries, the Japanese readout stated ministers, "affirmed their intention to continue exchanging views in light of the current events occurring in the region" and "concurred in sending a clear message that they strongly oppose any attempts to unilaterally change the status quo by coercion or any activities that escalate tension."&nbsp;

While China wasn't mentioned, nor "current events...in the region" pointed out, it is clear that Beijing's actions this year with its neighbours and beyond have changed the perception of the country drastically.

2020 saw Chinese aggressive action against&nbsp;both India and Japan. With India, the build-up by Chinese forces in eastern Ladakh continues, with Japan, China has&nbsp;staked its claim on Senkaku island&nbsp;which is under the administration of Tokyo. The year also saw the death of 20 Indian soldiers in aggressive actions by Chinese troops in Galwan Valley.

In the readout, Japan listed discussions on "regional situations" in the east China Sea and South China and called for "Free and open Indo-Pacific". China has been trying to stake claim to the whole of South China Sea based on its so-called "nine-dash line" which has been rejected by an arbitral tribunal constituted under United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) in 2016.

Key areas both Japan and Indian defence ministers discussed were on cooperation in third countries, on ways to counter disinformation and share lessons in humanitarian aid and disaster response amidst covid pandemic.&nbsp;

In the defence sector, both sides have increased cooperation, especially with the signing of the Japan-India Agreement on Reciprocal Provision of Supplies and Services (ACSA). The Indian Navy and its Japanese counterpart both undertook bilateral exercise earlier this year and in the month of November under the umbrella of Malabar Naval exercises--India, Japan, US and Australian navies came together.&nbsp;

India has occupied several dominating heights close to China's existing positions at finger 4, north bank of Pangong Lake. The development gives the Indian Army an edge over the Chinese even as PLA troops continue to indulge in provocative actions.

The Chinese have occupied finger 4 to finger 8 in the north bank of Pangong Lake. As part of disengagement, India has repeatedly asked Chinese forces to go on its side of LAC and vacate the area.

On Monday and Tuesday, the Chinese forces tried to indulge in provocative action especially by coming close to Indian forward locations near Rezang la.The 7th September "provocative" action by the Chinese forces saw them carrying &nbsp;"Guandao"-- traditional Chinese Sword which is basically a blade is mounted on a wooden or metal pole.

India had raised with China the issue of Chinese troops carrying spears, machetes during the 4 long hour ground commander level talks on Wednesday. Build-up is being seen by the Chinese troops in the Chushul sector at the LAC in Ladakh.

Meanwhile, India's external affairs minister S Jaishankar and Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi are shortly going to meet. This will be first in person physical meet between the 2 amidst the rising tension.
