This rice, which is made of beef muscle and fat cells has 8 per cent more protein than usual rice, as per the research team at Yonsei University in South Korea.

Scientists who developed this “meaty” rice argue that it could be a more affordable and eco-friendly source of protein. As per Matter Journal, hybrid rice is a bit firmer and more brittle than regular rice but has much more protein than regular rice.

The researchers say the food may serve as "relief for famine, military ration, or even space food" in the future. However, selling this rice to consumers as their staple food might be a difficult task.&nbsp;

As explained earlier, these lab-grown rice have&nbsp;more protein than regular rice or regular beef, and their making process is also way cleaner than regular food.&nbsp;

As compared to regular beef, hybrid rice has a smaller carbon footprint, as its&nbsp;production method eliminates the need to raise and farm a lot of animals, according to the research team.

For every 100g (3.5oz) of protein produced, hybrid rice is estimated to release under 6.27kg (13.8lb) of carbon dioxide, while beef production releases eight times more at 49.89kg, they say.

Researcher Sohyeon Park explained, "We usually obtain the protein we need from livestock, but livestock production consumes a lot of resources and water and releases a lot of greenhouse gas.”

So basically, hybrid rice is not only a better source of protein but is also much more eco-friendly as compared to regular sources. Park said if this experiment went down well with consumers, it could open the possibility for more such “grain-based hybrid food”.

This is not the first time though that a team has explored&nbsp;lab-grown meat products. In 2013, a team from London made the first lab-grown burger. Singapore also recently started the world’s first cultivated chicken product for consumers.&nbsp;

Italy on Thursday became the first European Union nation to ban the production and sale of lab-grown meat. Citing health concerns and a need to safeguard its livestock industry, Italy's lower house approved the ban.

<h2>What is banned?</h2>

The nation has banned the so-called cultivated meat&nbsp;that is grown in labs using animal tissue cells.

It also places a ban on the use of labels that describe plant-based protein as meat. As per AFP, every violation of this ban can chalk up fines ranging from 10,000 to 60,000 euros ($10,900-$65,000).&nbsp;

The law received a green light from Italy's senate earlier. The law says it seeks to "protect the national livestock heritage" while recognising its cultural, socio-economic and environmental value.

It also seeks to ensure "a high level of protection of human health", while protecting the interests of consumers and their right to information about what they are eating.

<h2>Cultivate meat and&nbsp;Italy</h2>

Italy's main agricultural lobby Coldiretti calls lab-grown meat 'Frankenstein' meat. On Thursday, the organisation said the law represents "a commitment to defend the Mediterranean diet".&nbsp;

Italy's Agriculture Minister, Francesco Lollobrigida, said that cultivated meat "interrupts the virtuous relationship between land, man and work that for millennia has accompanied us and allowed us to maintain the land".

"This ban is completely useless today since cultured meat has not yet been approved for human consumption in Europe and therefore cannot be marketed."

<h2>EU and lab-grown meat</h2>

The European Union, as per AFP,&nbsp;considers lab-grown meat a 'novel food' which means that any new product will be subject to authorisation from the bloc. If the bloc approves cultivated meat, Italy cannot ban it.

As of now, the meat is not allowed to be sold in the EU. However, companies in the US have been raising money for research into the new science.

Upside Foods, which was formerly known as Memphis Meats, welcomed the FDA decision but said that it will need few months after the approval to start delivery of the product to supermarkets. According to The Guardian, Upside Foods will also need an approval from the US Department of Agriculture.&nbsp;

Researchers from the Universities of Oxford and Minnesota published a study in 2019 that identified foods that are not only good for our bodies but also good for the environment.

According to the study, foods like whole-grain cereals, fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts are associated with improved health and have a very low impact on the environment. Unprocessed and processed red meat, however, have negative environmental impacts. Furthermore, these are also consistently associated with the highest levels of heart disease risk.

While other animal-based products such as milk and dairy products have a smaller, more moderate impact on the climate and a lesser impact on disease risk than meat, its contribution to climate change via deforestation for animal grazing is still monumental.&nbsp;

Globally, meat and dairy products are responsible for 60 per cent of agricultural greenhouse gas emissions, yet they only provide only about 18 per cent of calories and 37 per cent of protein.
