It has all the elements of a blockbuster. Credible actors like Rajkummar Rao and Janhvi Kapoor, great support cast comprising actors like Kumud Mishra and Zarina Wahab, a story that ticks the two major draws in India and romance and a unique story. Yet Mr &amp; Mrs Mahi never truly leaves an impact.&nbsp;

Written by Sharma and Nikhil Mehrotra, the story is a fresh but relatable take on modern marriages and the complexities that come along the way. In an Abhimaan-eseque style plot, Mahendra and Mahima, who share a common nickname - Mahi-&nbsp; marry each other in a match arranged by their parents. On the first night, they realise they deeply love cricket. Frustrated at never being able to make it to the Indian team, despite playing at state level, Mahendra now helps his father run the family sports goods shop. His father and he share a strained relationship where Mahendra has been constantly subjected to ridicule. When he discovers that his wife is a gifted batswoman, he realises coaching her for the Indian Team would get him fame, recognition&nbsp;and validation that he has desired all his life.&nbsp;

Mahima, meanwhile, is a doctor who doesn't like her job. She is initially reluctant of her husband's grand plan but eventually realises that cricket is her true calling and is more than willing to be a part of&nbsp;Mahendra's plan.&nbsp;

As Mahima gains success on the field, her marriage to Mahendra starts taking a toll as ego clashes take precedence and Mahendra's need for validation constantly puts unnecessary weight on their relationship.&nbsp;

Modern relationships and marriages have often been depicted on screen before. To its credit, Mr&nbsp;&amp; Mrs Mahi takes a fresh look at some known complex problems. Ego clashes between partners, ambition and dreams shattering marital bliss, finding happiness within first, the need for validation from partner- all these issues are well tackled.&nbsp;It takes cricket as a backdrop and a catalyst in Mahendra and Mahima's relationship. The sport brings the two together and it's the same sport that tears their relationship apart. Despite a credible story, the film doesn't leave a defining impact.&nbsp;

Rajkummar Rao's performance

Rao and Kapoor are great in their respective roles. Rajkummar Rao plays a complex man, who has self-doubt, is depressed, and constantly seeks validation. His happiness is his wife yet he craves for more. A poignant moment in the film has him talking to his mother (Wahab) who very casually says that needs are limitless but what matters is happiness from within. The scene is beautifully written and executed and stays with you.

While I am slightly tired of Kapoor's wide-eyed vulnerable act in every film, her role demands a certain amount of innocence which Kapoor ably brings out. It isn't easy to hold your own in a film which has actors like Kumud Mishra and Rajkummar Rao, yet Kapoor manages to do it.

The predictability, however, hampers the narrative to a great extent. You know how the story will pan out almost from the beginning. The loopholes in the characterisations are obvious and evident.&nbsp;

Films based on&nbsp;cricket with an underdog winning at the climatic end are not new. We have also seen enough films where women have played the lead in sports-centric biopics. Which is why so many moments of Mr &amp; Mrs Mahi- especially when Mahendra trains Mahima- &nbsp;seem familiar.&nbsp;

Neither can it be placed as an iconic love story. It does have great performers and some beautiful scenes of Rao with his on-screen parents and wife talking of inner happiness and peace, but the overall screenplay isn't able to tap into the plot's true potential leaving a very mild impact on the viewers.&nbsp;

Then there are two ex-lovers who meet a year later and are instantly attracted to each other but now one of them is married to someone else. There is also a middle-aged couple trying to find love in their relationship.&nbsp;

I wanted to create a lust story that a family can watch together. Why should a story of lust always make for exciting solo viewing and be uncomfortable for family viewing when families are created by love and lust? Neena Gupta, Mrunal and Angad have brought to life this simple, hilarious tale in the most charming way possible. Having partners like Netflix, RSVP and Flying Unicorn trust me to create a film for this reputed anthology has been immensely gratifying. I hope it's a story that will resonate with people”

Further speaking on it, Konkona Sen Sharma shares, “There is something exhilarating about a woman getting her rightly deserved freedom and taking control of her life and this is exactly what I wanted to showcase in my anthology for Lust Stories 2. Lust for me, like many, is a forbidden topic and I wanted to break away from the norm which was only possible because of my wonderful co-writer Pooja Tolani. I couldn't have asked for a better cast than Amruta and Tillotama, who worked so in sync with each other!”

Adding on to that, Sujoy Ghosh says, “This time lust stories are all about the different shades of Lust. Tamannah and Vijay brought the film to life just as I had imagined it, and I am hoping audiences will enjoy seeing their chemistry on screen.”

Kuttey movie review: It is a dog-eats-dog&nbsp;world in Aasmaan Bhardwaaj's film 'Kuttey'. A bunch of madcaps (in their distinct way) are all eying to rob a van carrying cash that is to be filled in ATMs across the city. Every party plans to intercept the van in an empty stretch on the Mumbai-Khandala highway. Problems occur when all land up at the same place, same time, -pointing guns at each other, eager to take the booty and run. 'Kuttey' written and directed by Aasmaan with additional dialogues by his illustrious father Vishal Bhardwaj, starts on a promising note. The filmmaker sticks to his famous father's filmmaking template mostly but does it have a similar effect as Vishal Bhardwaj's films do on the audience? Only in parts.

Arjun Kapoor and Kumud Mishra play corrupt cops who have been suspended from their service. They approach senior officer Pammi (Tabu) to get back their jobs, who demands Rs 1 crore each from them to get them back their jobs. Meanwhile, Radhika Madan and Shardul Bhardwaj play lovers who know that the odds are against their union. He is the sidekick of a druglord(Naseeruddin Shah) and she is the daughter of the drug lord. They need money to escape to a foreign land where they think they will get to live peacefully. All these characters individually want to rob that van that carries their hopes, dreams, and aspirations. Are they able to get the cash? Do they divide the money or do they have to kill each other first?

For a newcomer, it is indeed gutsy of Bhardwaj to direct and narrate a complicated story with an ensemble cast. The father-son duo tries to keep the audience hooked with unending twists and turns. Not all land well but still make for an engaging watch. Pitched as a caper comedy, the narrative is chaotic after a point. It keeps going back and forth with numerous subplots and twists. Not all are explained well neither do all conclude properly. The film's dialogues too have the occasional spark.

When you have so many characters in the script, it is a daunting task to write a plausible screenplay. But the director does an earnest job. Some of the scenes stand out, especially the ones post-interval and involving a chase sequence that features Tabu and Mishra. Brilliantly written with a giddy soundtrack to boot, the scene remains with you after the movie is over.

While the film has an impressive set of actors, it is Tabu who shines in her role as the badass boss lady Pammi. She knows she is a minority in the police force and has learned the tricks of the trade with time. Often referred to as 'Madam Sir', Pammi mouths abuses and wields power with equal ease. It's a sheer delight to watch Tabu perform. Not a single false note, the actress delivers yet another fine performance- almost regaling in the warped character that she plays on screen. Naseeruddin Shah, Konkona Sen Sharma, Radhika Madan, Kumud Mishra and Shardul Bhardwaj deliver to their limited roles. Arjun Kapoor, on the other hand, gets to sink his teeth into a meaty character but Kapoor is limited in his performance or perhaps overshadowed by the stalwarts on screen.

'Kuttey' follows Vishal Bhardwaj's template. It's dark, slightly comical and has an intentionally chaotic climax (similar to 'Kaminey') but it isn't quite as impactful. It does though boast a fantastic background score and original soundtrack thanks to Vishal Bhardwaj. The recurring 'Dhan ta nan' music from 'Kaminey' is used in this film as well but doesn't leave have an impact as it did in the 2009 film. &nbsp;I wish the film was slicker in its storytelling or left an impression. It has its moments for sure, mostly featuring the gorgeous Tabu who shines in a tepid narrative. 'Kuttey' releases in theatres this Friday.

Kuttey movie review: Tabu is stunning in a very average film

Ali Abbas Zafar's 'Jogi' is set pat-in-the-middle of the 1984 anti-Sikh pogrom in Delhi but is curiously disinterested in the transpiring violence. To be fair, the film does show scenes of brutality from one of the most shameful episodes in independent India's history. In those three days, appalling, politically-sanctioned violence engulfed the Indian national capital and thousands of innocents lost their lives. But the effect of those horrors -- horrors that serve as a chilling reminder that men are just beasts with less hair and will lose all pretense of compassion at the drop of a hat &nbsp;-- is severely impaired by a trite, dull story involving personal vengeance.

For those who don't know, the 1984 pogrom was a result of the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984, by her radicalised Sikh bodyguards. The assassination was the result of Operation Blue Star, an ill-advised, ill-planned, and artillery-backed full-frontal military operation ordered by Gandhi to eliminate the Khalistani terrorist Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. Bhindranwale was holed up with other militants in Amritsar's Golden Temple. But also in the temple complex were civilians, many of whom died in the crossfire. The Akal Takht, the highest seat of earthly authority for Sikhs, was laid to waste.&nbsp;

I have already given more context to the events depicted her than the script provides. Jogi (Diljit Dosanjh) is a young Sikh man who is unaware of Gandhi's assassination. While on a local bus, he and his elderly father are assaulted by their co-passengers. Unable to comprehend what is happening, he is told bluntly that his very religion is why he is being beaten.

Kumud Mishra's comically-evil politician (a stand-in for people like Sajjan Kumar, no doubt) is seen freeing criminals lodged for serious crimes and arming them with petrol bombs and metal rods. Each man is promised money, assigned to specific localities, and sicced on only Sikh-owned homes like rabid hounds. Never underestimate an enterprising Indian ringleader inciting a mob to violence. He also provides police officers with voter lists with Sikh names marked in red.&nbsp;

One of the cops, Chautala, played by Mohd. Zeeshan Ayyub, turns out to be honest and an old friend of Jogi. Coordinating with his friend, Chautala arranges for Jogi's family to leave for Punjab, even as the rest of the locality's Sikhs hide in a Gurudwara.&nbsp;

The reason for Lalli’s vendetta against his former friend is revealed in a flashback that is ludicurously out of place. Lalli is also given a redemption of sorts. He is not the anti-hero the film thinks he is.

'Jogi' is at its strongest when its focus is on the pogrom&nbsp;and its immediate impact. Whenever it goes too deep into the characters and their (badly written to boot) backstories, it loses focus. Personal stories surely have a place in overarching narratives. They give a certain flavour and intimacy to horrific events such as this. But those massacres were just not acts of revenge (and assuredly not for personal revenge). They were carefully orchestrated by politicians and targetted a single community with surgical precision.&nbsp;

Watch 'Jogi' only if you are a fan of Dosanjh, who is really in top form here, doing his best with the material he is saddled with. Mishra is also effective in a stereotypical role of a politician who sees the murders and rapes as a means to proceed to higher echelons of the party. Zeeshan Ayyub is also reliably good, but an actor of his calibre deserves characters with more depth than that.&nbsp;

To be fair, the film does show scenes of brutality from one of the most shameful episodes in independent India's history. In those three days, appalling, politically-sanctioned violence engulfed the Indian national capital and thousands of innocents lost their lives. But the effect of those horrors -- horrors that serve as a chilling reminder that men are just beasts with less hair and will lose all pretense of compassion at the drop of a hat -- is severely impaired by a trite, dull story involving personal vengeance. For those who don't know, the 1984 pogrom was a result of the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984, by her radicalised Sikh bodyguards. The assassination was the result of Operation Blue Star, an ill-advised, ill-planned, and artillery-backed full-frontal military operation ordered by Gandhi to eliminate the Khalistani terrorist Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. Bhindranwale was holed up with other militants in Amritsar's Golden Temple. But also in the temple complex were civilians, many of whom died in the crossfire. The Akal Takht, the highest seat of earthly authority for Sikhs, was laid to waste. I have already given more context to the events depicted her than the script provides. Jogi (Diljit Dosanjh) is a young Sikh man who is unaware of Gandhi's assassination. While on a local bus, he and his elderly father are assaulted by their co-passengers. Unable to comprehend what is happening, he is told bluntly that his very religion is why he is being beaten. Kumud Mishra's comically-evil politician (a stand-in for people like Sajjan Kumar, no doubt) is seen freeing criminals lodged for serious crimes and arming them with petrol bombs and metal rods. Each man is promised money, assigned to specific localities, and sicced on only Sikh-owned homes like rabid hounds. Never underestimate an enterprising Indian ringleader inciting a mob to violence. He also provides police officers with voter lists with Sikh names marked in red. One of the cops, Chautala, played by Mohd. Zeeshan Ayyub, turns out to be honest and an old friend of Jogi. Coordinating with his friend, Chautala arranges for Jogi's family to leave for Punjab, even as the rest of the locality's Sikhs hide in a Gurudwara. Sumeet, who plays a DJ took tips from the film's composer and renowned DJ Nucleya.&nbsp;Nucleya, as we all know, has his own speciality into EDM and Dubstep which was completely alien to&nbsp;Sumeet. The actor took some serious music lessons from Nucleya about the genre. He took basic lessons on how a DJ performs during a concert or in the club under high pressure from the audience.

When asked how he prepped for his role,&nbsp;Sumeet said, "I keenly observed how he worked on the console, I didn’t want to overdo or go crazy shifting the knobs, Nucleya had specific gestures and hand movements, as his music reaches its crescendo. I’ve tried my best to get that mannerism. He was sweet enough to share his anecdotes on how he prepares his set for a show, when to push the tempo and when to surprise the audience and keep them engaged through the show. To be very honest he’s a master at his craft and I’m just creating an illusion of being a pro at this. I hope I don’t disappoint him."
The movie marks the directorial debut of Akarsh Khurana in Bollywood. Nucleya`s music in the background score makes it even more fun.
