In a major revelation in the Kolkata rape and murder case, main accused Sanjay Roy told West Bengal police that he stalked the victim at the chest medicine ward a day before he committed the gruesome crime. The CCTV footage from August 8 shows Roy staring at the 33-year-old victim and four other junior doctors at the chest ward.

As per reports, the doctor went to the seminal hall at 1:00 am (local time) on August 9 to sleep between her 36-hour-long shift. Roy was seen entering the premises at 4:00 am (local time).

The doctor was later found dead in the morning, raped and murdered.

<h2>CBI investigating broken door bolt</h2>

News agency PTI reported that CBI was investigating the “broken bolt” on the seminar hall’s door. CBI is trying to find the answer to the question of&nbsp;how the offence was carried out without getting noticed by anybody.

CBI is also pursuing the angle that Roy may have sought a third person’s assistance to stand guard at the door.

“Interviews with doctors, interns, and junior doctors revealed that the door’s malfunction had been a known issue, which prevented the victim from locking the door that night,” one official was quoted as saying by the news agency.

“The tower bolt was broken, which caused the door to malfunction. We are probing whether anyone was stationed outside to act as a guard while the crime was committed,” the official said.

According to a CBI officer, a deep psychological analysis of Sanjay Roy, the accused in Kolkata doctor rape and murder, has uncovered a disturbing pattern of perverted behavior and a severe addiction to pornography.

The man has an ‘animal-like instinct’ and he showed no regret for the horrific murder inside the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital during interrogation, the officer said.

Talking to PTI, the CBI officer informed that Sanjay Roy showed no remorse for the crime that triggered national outrage. He narrated the entire crime to the investigation agency without displaying any hesitation.

For the unversed, the 31-yearl old doctor had gone to rest in the hospital's seminar hall during her 36-hour-long shift when Roy attacked her. The post-mortem report states she was raped and severely beaten. She had 16 external and nine internal injuries and died due to strangulation.

Sanjay Roy was arrested a day after the crime. Roy was seen entering the building around the estimated time of the crime and his Bluetooth headphones were found near the crime scene.

Several pornographic clips were discovered on Sanjay Roy's mobile phone.&nbsp;

The officer further stated that technical and scientific evidence indicates the presence of Roy at the crime scene.

The incident took place at Sion Hospital in the early hours of Sunday around 3:30 am local time. A group of five to six intoxicated men threatened the&nbsp;on-call residents in the ward. One of them, the woman doctor, sustained injuries while defending herself, according to media reports.&nbsp;

The attendants along with the patient, fled the scene after the incident. The patient&nbsp;had arrived at&nbsp;the hospital for treatment after suffering injuries on his face.&nbsp;

The female doctor has given her statement at Sion Police Station and the process of filing the FIR (First Information Report) was underway.&nbsp;

Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) condemned the incident and implored the government to ensure the safety and security of the doctors.&nbsp;

Notably, after citizens took out a protest against the heinous incident, a group of miscreants barged into the hospital and destroyed the property.&nbsp;

The Union Health Ministry of India on Saturday (August 17) urged the doctors to end their nationwide strike, called in protest against the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Hospital, assuring the formation of a committee that will suggest measures for the safety of healthcare professionals.&nbsp;

The Indian health ministry&nbsp;said that this committee will have recommendations from all the stakeholders, and the respective state governments are also invited to share their inputs and suggestions in this regard.

<h2>IMA writes to PM Modi</h2>

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has reached out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, outlining several demands following the tragic sexual assault and death of a female postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Bengal.

The IMA is urging the introduction of a Central Act that would integrate the 2020 amendments to the Epidemic Diseases Act of 1897 into the proposed "Healthcare Services Personnel and Clinical Establishments (Prohibition of Violence and Damage to Property) Bill 2019."

"The security measures at hospitals should be equivalent to those at airports. Designating hospitals as safe zones with mandatory security provisions is a crucial first step. CCTVs, security personnel, and protocols can be implemented thereafter," the IMA said.

They presented a series of demands to the Central government, saying they&nbsp;have&nbsp;to make fast and concrete moves to save the medical professionals from the atrocities committed.

In response, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare assured the representatives that the government is very sensitive to the problems and challenges the healthcare workers face and is totally committed to addressing these issues.

The ministry informed that 26 states have already put in place legislation to safeguard healthcare workers to&nbsp;show&nbsp;that&nbsp;the government is addressing the issue.
