The Russia-Ukraine war continues to escalate, with both sides exchanging heavy long-range strikes far beyond the front lines.

Ukrainian drone attacks in Russia’s southern regions reportedly killed two people, including an eight-year-old child, while debris damaged buildings in the port city of Novorossiysk. Russian authorities said their air defenses shot down dozens of Ukrainian drones over Russian territory and the Black Sea.

Ukraine, meanwhile, reported that Russian drone and missile strikes killed civilians in Kherson. Ukraine’s Air Force said Russia launched a large wave of missiles and drones targeting areas including the Odesa region and northeastern Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has also warned that Russia could be preparing for a new mobilisation following its September parliamentary elections. Ukrainian authorities say intelligence points to preparations for a potential large-scale recruitment drive, although Russian officials have not confirmed such a plan.

Roman Mrochko, head of the city’s military administration, took to Telegram and said three among those injured are being treated in hospital. He also said that two buildings in the city had been destroyed, three suffered heavy damage and 10 sustained some damage.

“In the evening, the entire city trembled,” said the Ukrainian Emergency Services on Telegram, adding that the “enemy targeted the very centre of Kherson.” The emergency services said their workers rescued two women, in their 70s and 80s, who had been blocked in a building.&nbsp;

Another person was wounded when Russian forces shelled Beryslav, a town further north on the Dnipro River in the Kherson Region, according to Ukraine’s Suspilne public broadcaster.&nbsp;

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Russian forces have lost at least a brigade worth of troops in a bid to take over the eastern city of Avdiivka.&nbsp;

This comes as Russia in the past weeks has ramped up attacks in the Ukrainian town of Avdiivka in the eastern Donetsk region and the northeastern city of Kupyansk, in what is being viewed as a new offensive by the Russian forces in a bid to move the front line forward before winter.

“The invaders made several attempts to surround Avdiivka, but each time our soldiers stopped them and threw them back, causing painful losses. In these cases, the enemy lost at least a brigade,” Zelensky told United Kingdom Prime Minister Rishi Sunak during a phone call, according to the president’s office. The size of a brigade can vary between 1,500 and 8,000 troops.

A report by the New York Times, back in August, citing US officials said the number of Ukrainian and Russian troops killed or wounded since the war in Ukraine that began in February 2022 was nearing 500,000.&nbsp;

However, the officials warned that the number is strictly an estimate due to the lack of official figures.&nbsp;

In an update on Friday, the Ukrainian General Staff said the military “steadfastly holds the defence and causes significant losses” to Russian troops, adding Moscow was not giving up on its attempts to encircle the town.

The blast reportedly damaged a line of shops behind the bus stop and took down power cables and shattered windows of buildings on the opposite street.&nbsp;

Viktoria, a woman who was waiting for the bus said that "at this time of day it was very crowded here so they are probably more casualties."

At least five people were killed and 35 others were injured on Saturday (December 24) by a Russian missile strike in the Ukrainian city of Kherson, according to presidential aide Kyrylo Tymoshenko. Of those injured, 16 were heavily wounded, Tymoshenko said, according to a report by Reuters.&nbsp;

Taking to Telegram, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attack and shared pictures of the shelling. "Social networks will most likely mark these photos as 'sensitive content'. But this is not sensitive content – it is the real life of Ukraine and Ukrainians," Zelensky said.&nbsp;

Saturday's attack comes more than a week after two people, including a Red Cross worker,&nbsp;were killed in Russian shelling in the city on December 15. Regional governor Yaroslav Yanushevych said the attack left Kherson completely without power. President Zelensky had said that Moscow bombed the city more than 16 times on this day.

More than 11,000 people have left Kherson since it was recaptured in November and most of them had been evacuated by the government, according to the ministry that was responsible for reintegrating the city. During Russia's control, regional officials estimated that 100,000 residents were in Kherson, AFP reported last week.&nbsp;

Kherson had lost power supply after heavy shelling by Russian forces late last week. Now much of electricity supply has been restored, with about 75 per cent now with full access to power as of Sunday morning, according to the regional military administration.

Meanwhile, more than 500 Ukrainian localities were without power Sunday. "The enemy continues to attack the country's essential infrastructure. Currently, 507 localities in eight regions of our country are cut off from electricity supplies," deputy interior minister Yevgueny Yenin told Ukrainian television.

"The Kharkiv region is the worst hit with 112 isolated villages," Yenin added.

Authorities have urged civilians to prepare in the face of deteriorating early winter conditions and regular power outages.&nbsp;

Kyiv's mayor told residents on Thursday to stock up on water, food and warm clothes. Residents have been told to consider staying with friends in the outskirts of the Ukrainian capital if they could.

Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko warned that the temperature in homes could drop rapidly in the event of "a blackout and the destruction of infrastructure and a total absence of electricity, water supply, drainage and heat supply".
