Nepal has approved a new design for its one-rupee coin, replacing the controversial national map featuring Lipulekh, Limpiyadhura, and Kalapani with an image of the historic Lo Manthang Monastery in Mustang.

The decision, approved by Nepal's Cabinet, also includes changes to the coin's size, weight, metal composition, and overall design. While Nepal Rastra Bank says the new coins will take time to enter circulation, the move is being viewed by experts as a symbolic diplomatic gesture that could help ease tensions between India and Nepal over the long-standing border dispute.

Nepali Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba has called Limpiyadhura, Lipulekh, and Kalapani integral parts of Nepal.

“The Nepal government is ready to defend its territories. The areas of Limpiyadhura and Lipulekh and Kalapani are Nepali and the government has a firm understanding of them. Issue of the border is sensitive and we understand that this can be resolved through dialogues and talks through diplomatic channels,” Deuba said during his address to the parliament.

Highlighting Nepal's approach of working on the issues of mutual benefits when it comes to its neighbours, Deuba said that the country has been adopting a non-aligned foreign policy.

Deuba's statement comes after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's fifth visit to the Himalayan nation in which he took part in a Buddhist ceremony to mark the birth anniversary of Lord Buddha at Lumbini in southwest Nepal.

During Modi's visit, India and Nepal signed an agreement to build a 695 megawatt (MW) hydropower plant as New Delhi looks to grow its influence in its smaller neighbours, where China is also increasingly active.

After Nepal unveiled a new political map incorporating Kalapani region currently occupied by India, ties between the two neighbours witnessed some tension.

Former Nepali Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli had objected to India’s inauguration of a road link via Lipulekh to Kailash Mansarovar in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China.

China has been pouring heavy investment into the landlocked Himalayan nation even though Nepal has traditionally done a balancing act between New Delhi and Beijing.

Sher Bahadur Deuba calls Limpiyadhura, Lipulekh and Kalapani integral part of Nepal

Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli said on Sunday that he will get back the territories of Kalapani, Limpiyadhura and Lipulekh from India. He remarks came during his address to National Assembly or upper house of Nepal's parliament. Oli's remarks have come just days before Nepal's foreign minister's India visit on January 14.

"Kalapani, Limpiyadhura and Lipulekh which are located east of the Mahakali River belong to Nepal as per the Sugauli Treaty. We will get them back through diplomatic talks with India," Oli said.

"Our foreign minister will visit India on January 14 during which his discussion will be centred on the issue of the map that we have published with the inclusion of the three territories," said Oli, who had triggered the border row last year after his government came out with a new political map that showed Indian territories as part of Nepal.

After Nepal released the map last year, India reacted sharply, calling it a "unilateral act" and cautioning Kathmandu that such "artificial enlargement" of territorial claims will not be acceptable to it.

India said that Nepal's action violated an understanding reached between the two countries to resolve the boundary issues through talks.

The bilateral exchanges that had stalled due to the bitter boundary dispute were reset in the later part of 2020 with a series of high-level visits, as New Delhi emphasised that it sees itself as the Himalayan nation's "foremost friend" and development partner.

Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla's maiden visit to Nepal in November was largely aimed at resetting bilateral ties. Shringla met Prime Minister Oli and other top political brass and emphasised that India and Nepal are on the same page and share the same vision.

Addressing the lawmakers, Oli said that his government has made sincere efforts to strengthen bilateral ties with both India and China.

"We are working to deepen ties with India based on sovereign equality. In fact, we want to deepen the relationship with India in true sense and we should not hesitate to raise our issues of genuine concerns with India," said Oli, who is known for his pro-Beijing leanings.

The prime minister also said that recent high-level visits from India and China were goodwill ones. "They came here to convey their good wishes. There is nothing to worry much about that," he was quoted as saying by My Republica newspaper.

Oli also defended his decision to dissolve parliament, saying "I was forced to dissolve the House of the Representatives as some people in my party did not allow the government to perform well."

Nepal's education minister Giriraj Mani Pokharel told TOI that the book titled as 'Nepalko Bhubhaag Ra Seesmasambandhi Swadhyay Samagri', which loosely translated as Nepal's territorial boundary and geography, has been introduced for students in higher secondary schools.&nbsp;

The move has been slammed by several Nepalese experts, who question the timing of the release as several pressing issues remain unaddressed.&nbsp;

"Is this the right time to come up with this book," said Khadga KC, head of the Department of International Relations and Diplomacy at Tribhuvan University, reported The Kathmandu Post.&nbsp;

"Such moves should be taken after a proper study of their consequences."

Mrigendra Bahadur Karki from the Centre for Nepal and Asian Studies said that the syllabus should be designed in a manner to produce "academics" and not "activists".&nbsp;

The preface of the book has used very strong language against India, in which Pokhrael wrote that he campaigned 24 years ago to "chase" Indian Army away Nepalese region.&nbsp;

"The language used by Pokhrael is highly undiplomatic," Karki said.&nbsp;
