Kabir Singh: First reactions in, critics call it Shahid Kapoor's best performance ever

<p>Shahid Kapoor is gearing up for the release of his film ‘Kabir Singh’ in which he plays the role of a medical student who becomes self-destructive when the girl he loves gets married to someone else.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Speaking about his character’s universality, he said that the audience will relate to Kabir Singh as many have been in a similar situation including himself.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In an interview to an entertainment website, the actor said that he has experienced heartbreak and has seen his friends go through the phase Kabir Singh goes through in the film. He said, "A certain part of the film is about that [self-destructive phase after break-up]. I've been there and I've seen so many of my friends be there. We all at different points in life have fallen apart emotionally. We've all gone through phases where we have felt rejected and not liked ourselves. We don't feel happy about living. Most of the people I know, including me, have been through those phases. And they are the most vulnerable times in your life."</p>

<p>When asked about his first heartbreak, he said, "I was in my ninth standard and I really liked this girl. We had just four girls in the class so there were limited options to have a crush on. Apparently, half the class liked her and I wasn't even in the top 5-6 people on her mind. She probably didn't even know much about me."</p>

<p>‘Kabir Singh’ is the Hindi remake of Telugu film ‘Arjun Reddy’ which was a major hit down south. The film is directed by Sandeep Vanga Reddy who also helmed the Telugu original. "We then watch things made internationally and praise them for the fact that they are so honest, straight and not trying to be politically correct all the time. Cinema is meant to showcase different people. It's not about wonderful, perfect people. I think we all are imperfect in our own ways. We all have grey areas within ourselves, we go through good and bad phases," he said at the event.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The actor pointed out that everyone has been angry, hurt and negative at some point.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"To me, watching a film like 'Kabir Singh' will help understand that when you allow yourself to be affected by those things, it can take you on the path of destruction. It can warn you from going in that route.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"For people who might've been there, it can be therapeutic. Cinema acts as a medicine. If you see something you relate to, it helps you have the catharsis of sorts."</p>

<p>"I did 'Jab We Met'. Who was the aggressive character in the film? I played the submissive character. In 'Padmaavat', I was playing much more quieter character and now I've done 'Kabir Singh' where I am playing an aggressive character."</p>

<p>When prodded further about how his character is territorial towards women, Shahid said in college there are alpha males, men who feel they have a sense of territorial ownership over a certain place.</p>

<p>"There are other men who aren't so aggressive in their behaviour. Some films depict those kind of characters, this film depicts this kind of character."</p>

<p>However, when asked specifically if he justifies the acts of his character, the actor said, "You see the film and see what happens to him. Tommy Singh (in 'Udta Punjab') does much worse things than 'Kabir Singh.' If I start justifying characters, I can't be an actor."&nbsp;</p>

<p>The film has Kapoor in two avatars—as a college rebel who falls head over heels in love with a fellow medical student and then as a surgeon failing miserably at coping with having lost her.&nbsp;</p>

Kumar, who had sustained serious injuries on his head, was immediately rushed to hospital in Dehradun where he was put on the ventilator for a few hours before he passed away.&nbsp;<br />

Kumar is survived by three brothers and a sister, the statement said.&nbsp;<br />

The producers of the film in a joint statement expressed their grief.&nbsp;<br />

"We are deeply saddened by the loss. We are extending our deepest sympathies to the family of Ram Kumar. We are offering support to the family in the immediate aftermath of this tragic event," the statement read.&nbsp;<br />
