'Don't believe you for a second': Justin Trudeau stumped on face by factory worker

<p>Canada has abruptly ended a policy of allowing work permits to those on visitor visas from within the county, in yet another blow to thousands of migrants, many of them from India. Canada is rolling back or limiting several liberal immigration schemes introduced in the wake of the Covid pandemic. India is reportedly the second highest source country of temporary workers to Canada, behind only Mexico.</p>

<p>The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada or IRCC, the country's immigration agency, said in a release, "Canada has ended the policy allowing visitors on temporary visas to apply for work permits from within the country, initially introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic."&nbsp;</p>

<p>The change will be effective immediately, the agency said on Wednesday (Aug 28). It will continue to process applications submitted before that date.</p>

<p>Talwinder Singh Parmar, a Canadian national and the founder of the banned terrorist organisation Babbar Khalsa International was identified as the mastermind behind Canada's worst terror attack. Inderjit Singh Reyat was convicted of manslaughter in connection with the bombing and received a 15-year prison sentence in 2003. Reyat was released to the halfway house in 2016. Two other accused, Ripudaman Singh Malik and Ajaib Singh Bagri, were both acquitted and found not guilty.</p>

<p>Since Reyat refused to testify against anyone else, he remained the only suspect to be convicted in the case.</p>

<p>The Indian high commissioner said, "No government in the world should overlook the threat of terrorism emanating from its territories for political gains. Human lives are much more important than the transitory political interests. All terrorist activities should be met with exemplary legal and social actions before they start harming the larger humanity."</p>

<p>The Indian high commission's remarks come even as India has been raising its concerns over space being given to extremist ideology in the North American country. Khalistan extremists have time and again held protests&nbsp;and issued threats against&nbsp;Indian diplomats in Canada and the Indian leadership. Recently, Canadian PM Justin Trudeau attended an event that saw pro-Khalistan chants, which saw Delhi summoning Canada's Deputy High Commissioner in New Delhi.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Trudeau also issued a statement on the anniversary in which he pointed out that the attack "reminds us of the senseless violence that terrorism perpetuates and of our shared responsibility to unequivocally condemn terrorism."</p>

<p>Nijjar was designated a terrorist by New Delhi for fostering separatism in India's Punjab state and related acts of terrorism. He was the chief of Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF) and was killed in a targeted shooting in Canada's Surrey, outside a British Columbia Gurudwara on June 18 last year.</p>

<p>Four Indian nationals, Karan Brar, Amandeep Singh, Kamalpreet Singh, and Karanpreet Singh, are accused of killing Nijjar.</p>

<p>Trudeau as well as opposition leader Pierre Poilievre attended the Khalsa Day celebrations in Toronto on Sunday (Apr 28) where loud chants of pro-Khalistan slogans were raised.</p>

<p>As the Canadian prime minister was set to address the public to mark Khalsa Day, the "Khalistan Zindabad" chants got louder, as seen in the video released by Canada-based CPAC TV.</p>

<p>NDP leader Jagmeet Singh and Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow were also present at the event.</p>

<p>India's image in Canada has taken a hit as positive views related to the country dropped&nbsp;by 11 points since March 2023,&nbsp;according to new data from the non-profit Angus Reid Institute.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Angus Reid Institute was founded in October 2014 by pollster and sociologist Dr Angus Reid and provides public opinion polling among other services. Some reports suggest that the non-profit is biased in its reporting.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the latest report on India-Canada, the institute suggested that only 33 per cent of Canadians have a favourable opinion of India while a majority of 54 per cent view it unfavourably.</p>

<p>Notably, India has strongly refuted the claims terming them "baseless". Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal had said, "We have seen media reports about the Canadian commission inquiring into. We strongly reject all such baseless allegations of Indian interference in Canadian elections."</p>

An official probe released its report on a matter related to foreign meddling in elections and refuted&nbsp;the unsubstantiated claims. The probe,&nbsp;however, mentioned China's influence in the elections in 2017 and 2021.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I do not believe that during the 2021 election, we saw evidence of the Government of India using those tools in the campaign," a polling official informed the investigation panel.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, on Friday (Mar 15) said that he thinks about quitting his “crazy job” every day but plans to finish his term ahead of the country’s election which is&nbsp;supposed to be held in 2025. This comes as recent polls indicated that he and his Liberal Party are becoming increasingly unpopular among Canadians.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“I could not be the man I am and abandon the fight at this point,” said the Canadian PM, in an interview with French-language broadcaster Radio-Canada where he also spoke about the personal sacrifices of his job.&nbsp;</p>

<p>When asked if the Canadian PM had thought about quitting, he laughed and said, “I think about quitting every day. It’s a crazy job I’m doing, making the personal sacrifices.”</p>

<p>He added, “Of course, it’s super tough, it’s super not great at times.”</p>

<p>Ottawa is supposed to hold elections by October 2025 and if recent polls are anything to go by, Liberals would be crushed by the right-of-centre party in the upcoming polls.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Many in Trudeau’s party and his allies have reportedly suggested that it’s time for him to leave as his decreasing popularity may be dragging the Liberal Party down with him.</p>

<p>During the interview on Friday, Trudeau also said, “I entered politics not to be popular, not for personal reasons, (but) because I want to serve and I know I have something to offer.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>Speaking about the carbon tax, on Friday, the Canadian PM said he will move forward with his government’s plan despite calls from some provincial lawmakers calling on his government to freeze the increase.</p>

<p>The opposition party in Canada has also vowed to address the government’s budget deficit, tackle the housing crisis and crack down on crime.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“As a trained lawyer, I look okay, so where’s the case? Where’s the evidence? Where’s the finding right here, right now? Well, there isn’t one,”&nbsp;Peters was quoted as saying by The Indian Express newspaper.</p>

<p>On being asked if New Zealand cleared its stance to India on the matter, he had said,&nbsp;“Well, I wasn’t here, it was handled by the previous government. But look, sometimes when you’re hearing Five-Eyes information, you’re hearing it and saying nothing. It is coming past you," he said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"You don’t know the value or the quality of it, but you’re pleased to have it. You don’t know whether there is going to be substantial material value or nothing. But the very, very critical information that matters… This was mainly handled by the previous government."</p>

<h2><strong>Peters meets Indian counterpart Jaishankar</strong></h2>

<p>Peters, who met with his Indian counterpart S Jaishankar in New Delhi affirmed that his visit to India played a significant role in taking the relationship between the two countries to the next level.</p>

<p>"New Zealand and India are two countries that can, should and will be doing more together," Peters said, adding, "My visit has demonstrated a joint commitment to investing more in building a broad-based, mutually beneficial relationship."</p>
