US presidential candidate Donald Trump has posted a fake image on social media of popstar Taylor Swift supporting his candidature for the upcoming presidential elections.

On Sunday, a post by the Republican candidate on Truth Social showed Swift dressed in red, white and blue with a caption that said "Taylor Swift Wants You To Vote For Donald Trump." "I accept!" Trump wrote.

Many are aware that Swift has never endorsed a candidate publicly in the 2024 race. However, she has supported Democrats earlier. Trump is a Republican candidate.

Swift had backed US President Joe Biden and running mate Kamala Harris in 2020. At the 2024 elections, Harris will be contesting for the elections against Trump.

Swift also criticized Trump in a 2020 documentary.

Swift is known to be one of the iconic figures in pop culture and has a huge fan base worldwide who proudly call themselves Swifties. Perhaps, Trump was eager to cash in on Taylor Swift's popularity, sharing photos of young women wearing "Swifties for Trump" shirts, and a satirical article with the headline "Swifties Turning to Trump After ISIS Foiled Taylor Swift Concert." The article was marked "SATIRE" above the headline.

"Swifties for Trump is a massive movement that grows bigger every single day," Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung said in a statement when asked for comment about the fake Swift image. We aren't sure if Cheung's comment was a jibe at the singer and her fans or if he genuinely was mistaken by the fake images.

Soon after the images surfaced online, Swift fans and watchdog groups pointed out that images posted by Trump appeared to be deepfakes generated by artificial intelligence.

Trump's post was "yet another example of AI's power to create misinformation," consumer group Public Citizen said, as per Reuters. "The potential harms to our society that could result from such misinformation, including abuses of our elections, are wide-reaching and immensely damaging," the group added.

Taylor Swift's political leanings

While Swift has been busy touring with her Eras Tour worldwide, at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Swift fan Rebecca Goff handed out friendship bracelets, a common practice among the singer's fans, at a Nevada Democratic Party breakfast.

Goff told the news agency that she felt Trump was the antithesis of Swift's ideals, including celebrating girlhood and womanhood. "That's like the antithesis of what Trump and the GOP are trying to do, especially to women. They're trying to make us smaller. They want us to go back to being just housewives, child bearers," Goff said.

Swift has so far not reacted to Trump's posts but the former US President's post also drew online mockery and scorn from the singer's fans, some of whom called on her to take legal action against the former president.

In the past, Swift's feelers into politics have been heavily scrutinized, which has also led to political misinformation and right-wing conspiracy theories. Her silence had even led many to think she was a closet Republican, until 2018 when she broke both her silence and the internet by endorsing the Democratic opponent of far-right US Senator Marsha Blackburn in Tennessee.

In 2020, however, she had supported Biden and Harris. She has since spoken out in particular for the legal right to an abortion and LGBTQ rights.

In recent weeks, intense speculation has swirled on social media that Swift will endorse Democratic nominee Kamala Harris in the November election. While the singer has yet to comment, some of her fans have already formed a group called "Swifties for Kamala," attracting tens of thousands of followers on platforms including Instagram and X.

A section of protesters at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago on Monday (Aug 19) unfurled a banner that said "Stop Arming Israel" as President Joe Biden addressed the gathering.

“We are working around the clock to reunite hostages with their families and surge humanitarian help and food assistance into Gaza now. To end civilian suffering of the Palestinian people and finally, finally, deliver a ceasefire and end this war,” said Biden.

The president then acknowledged the thousands of anti-Israel protesters who demonstrated outside the convention centre by stating "They have a point".

"A lot of innocent people are being killed on both sides,” he added.

US House of Representatives Republicans issued a report on Monday alleging Democratic President Joe Biden committed impeachable offenses, but it was unclear whether they would push for a vote following a probe the White House has long dismissed as politically motivated.

A 291-page report by three House committees alleged that Biden profited from an influence-peddling scheme to enrich himself and members of his family through foreign business dealings beginning in 2014, when he was vice president.

"The committees present this information to the House of Representatives for its evaluation and consideration of appropriate next steps," the report said.

It was not clear if Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson would schedule a vote to impeach Biden in the weeks leading up to the Nov. 5 election, in which Republican Donald Trump is locked in a tight battle with Vice President Kamala Harris.

Even if the Republican-controlled House were to pass such a measure, it would be unlikely to remove Biden from office, given that he would need to be convicted by a Senate controlled 51-49 by his own Democratic Party. Biden, who withdrew his re-election bid last month, is due to leave office when his successor is sworn in on Jan. 20.

Democrats have disparaged the effort as retribution for Trump, who was impeached twice by a Democratic-controlled House and acquitted each time by the Senate. The first impeachment alleged that Trump pressured Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky to help smear Biden in return for US aid.

"She’s facing 12 years in prison for a $51 donation that she made as an American citizen on American soil," he said, urging the US State Department to declare her "wrongfully detained" and prioritise her release.

'High treason': Who is Ksenia Karelina? US woman Russia sentenced to 12yrs for donating $51 to Ukraine charity

The Biden administration this week has negotiated deals with major pharmaceutical companies to lower the prices of 10 of Medicare’s most widely used and expensive drugs. While federal officials have yet to disclose the exact new prices, the administration projections cited by the Associated Press claim that US taxpayers will save approximately $6 billion annually.

These estimates, however, are based on earlier projections.

What does it mean?

Despite the lack of immediate transparency, the expected price reductions are likely to benefit millions of older Americans who rely on these drugs for managing conditions such as diabetes, blood cancer, heart failure, and blood clots.

This deal marks a crucial milestone for the Medicare programme, which serves over 67 million older and disabled Americans. For decades, the federal government was prohibited from negotiating drug prices with pharmaceutical companies, a common practice among private insurers.

White House adviser Neera Tanden said: "This meant that drug companies could basically charge whatever they want for life-saving treatments people rely on, and all Americans paid the price."

Which drug prices will be lowered?

Among the drugs included in the negotiations are the blood thinners Xarelto and Eliquis and the diabetes medications Jardiance and Januvia. In 2023, Medicare spent $50 billion on these medications alone.

Vice President Kamala Harris, who cast the tie-breaking vote to pass the law enabling these negotiations, will play a key role in promoting the deal as part of her presidential campaign. She and President Joe Biden are scheduled to announce the new drug prices together on Thursday (August 15).

But there is a catch

While some pharmaceutical executives have suggested that the negotiations may not significantly impact their profits, the final drug prices are set to be released by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services later on Thursday. However, these new prices will not take effect until 2026.

Morning news brief: US clarifies on Sheikh Hasina's resignation; Japan PM to step down; and more

Less than a month after stepping up as the Democratic presidential candidate, US Vice President Kamala Harris is gaining momentum in the race, moving ahead in polls and attracting large crowds at rallies across the United States. This week, the presumptive presidential candidate for the Democratic Party also landed on the cover of Time Magazine.

Kamala Harris' TIME cover has earned itself an unlikely admirer: Donald Trump, her political rival.

In his recent August 12 interview with Elon Musk on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, Trump described Harris as a "beautiful woman".

So far, so good, right? What can be construed as problematic is that Trump did not stop there. The Republican widely known for his anti-immigrant and at times blatantly racist comments went on to compare Harris' beauty with his wife Melania Trump.

Was Trump whitewashing Kamala Harris?

Just a few days back, Donald Trump questioned Kamala Harris's racial identity as a Black woman.

In a controversial interaction with African American journalists in Chicago on Jul 31, former President Trump suggested that Kamala Harris had "turned Black" for political purposes.

He falsely claimed Kamala had initially identified as Indian, but "all of a sudden, she made a turn, and she became a Black person."

"She looks like the most beautiful actress ever to live," Trump remarked, seemingly downplaying her racial identity by comparing her to a different standard of beauty.

"It was a drawing, and actually, she looked very much like a great first lady, Melania," he said.

His comment can be seen merely as superficial praise. However, Trump also said that, "She didn't look like Kamala," which can also be seen as an attempt to whitewash Kamala Harris' identity as a person of colour and a try to box her into the traditional, Eurocentric standards of beauty.

"But of course, she's a beautiful woman, so we'll leave it at that," added Trump.

Despite this compliment, Trump as usual didn't hold back on criticising Harris and her campaign.

He accused the media of giving Harris a "free ride" and not scrutinising her views adequately since she became the Democratic candidate. He also took a jab at Harris for avoiding interviews, a move that has been seized upon by Republicans as a sign of reluctance to engage with the media.

Trump's criticisms extended beyond Harris' media appearances. In the same conversation with Musk, he accused Harris of attempting to mimic his policies, specifically citing her recent pledge to eliminate tax on tips—a policy Trump had previously proposed. He further claimed that Harris was trying to position herself as "more Trump than Trump," a tactic he dismissed as insincere.

The interview, which was delayed due to a reported cyberattack on X, also saw Trump veer into discussions on global warming, nuclear proliferation, and even the idea of moving to Venezuela if he loses the upcoming election.

US President Joe Biden has hinted that Iran could stop its 'avenging' plans against Israel if a Gaza ceasefire deal were to be reached. White House has been bracing for a potential retaliatory attack from Iran after Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh was killed on its soil, allegedly by the Israeli side.

Addressing reporters on Tuesday (Aug 13) in New Orleans, Biden said "That's my expectation," regarding Tehran skipping the strikes against Tel Aviv.

“We’ll see what Iran does and we’ll see what happens if there is any attack. But I’m not giving up,” Biden added.

Biden's version was reiterated by US State Department deputy spokesperson Vedant Patel during a briefing. Patel said a hostage and ceasefire deal would more “broadly, create conditions for diplomacy to get the region out of this cycle of violence".

Patel added that US State Secretary Antony Blinken was working round the clock with all parties involved to chalk out the deal that could end volatility in the region, albeit briefly.

“He [Blinken] has been working the phones for the past number of weeks, continuing to echo the same message, which is, we are close to getting the ceasefire deal across the finish line,” Patel said.

Iran may not attack Israel for revenge. US President Joe Biden reveals a way out

Ukraine said on Tuesday its biggest cross-border assault of the war to date would prevent Russia sending more troops to fight in its eastern Donetsk region and disrupt military logistics, and that Kyiv had no interest in occupying Russian territory.

Ukraine blindsided Moscow by pouring thousands of troops into the western Russian region of Kursk last week in a surprise operation that Kyiv says has seen its forces take 1,000 sq km of land, its largest gain since 2022.

"Unlike Russia, Ukraine does not need other people's property. Ukraine is not interested in taking the territory of the Kursk region, but we want to protect the lives of our people," Ukraine's foreign ministry's spokesperson said.

President Volodymyr Zelensky has said Ukrainian forces have taken control of areas in the Kursk region that Russia has used to launch more than two thousand cross-border strikes on Ukraine since June.

"It should be emphasised that the operation ... helps the front line because it does not allow Russia to transfer additional units to (Ukraine's) Donetsk region, complicates its military logistics," foreign ministry spokesman Heorhii Tykhyi said.

Russian forces have been trying to advance for months on multiple fronts in the Donetsk region, taking advantage of their greater troop numbers to steadily inch forward towards cities like the Kyiv-held logistics hub of Pokrovsk.

Reuters could not independently verify the situation on the battlefield.

For now, there is no sign of a letup for Ukraine in the east, where Kyiv's military said earlier it had recorded the largest number of battles with Russian forces on the Pokrovsk front in a single day since before the Kursk incursion.

Ukrainian military spokesman Dmytro Lykhoviy told Reuters they had noted a movement of Russian troops from Ukraine's south to other areas, likely including Kursk, this week.

But he said the number of attacks had not reduced as a result and that it was too early to draw conclusions.

Restricting movement

Kyiv's military on Tuesday restricted the movement of civilians within a 20 km (12 mile) zone of the northeastern border area.

It cited an "increase in the intensity of hostilities" and the activation of Russian sabotage and reconnaissance groups, adding the measure was temporary and that residents could still access their homes by showing proof of registration.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has vowed to hit back at Ukraine with a "worthy response" and accused Kyiv's "Western masters" of giving Ukrainian forces help.

Russia's acting regional governor in Kursk said on Monday that Ukraine's forces had taken control of 28 settlements in an incursion that was about 12 km deep and 40 km wide.

Though less than half Ukraine's estimate of its gains, the Russian assessment was a striking public admission of a major setback more than 29 months since Russia launched a full-scale invasion of its smaller neighbour.

With less than three months to go for the United States presidential election, Vice President Kamala Harris is ahead of former US President Donald Trump by four points in three key states, according to recent polling by The New York Times/Siena College.

According to the poll, which was released early on Saturday (Aug 10), Harris is now ahead of the former president in the US states of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania. In the hypothetical contest, Harris received 50 per cent of the vote against 46 per cent for Trump. among likely voters in all three states.

In the same swing states, Harris' numbers show a notable improvement over those of President Joe Biden.

Earlier this year, in two different NYT/Siena surveys conducted in Pennsylvania, Biden received 45 per cent of the vote compared to 48 per cent for Trump.

In April and early May polls, however, the incumbent president was ahead of his Republican opponent in Michigan (47 per cent to 46 per cent) but behind Trump in Wisconsin (46 per cent to 47 per cent).

Democrats have been very welcoming and supportive of Harris since she launched her presidential campaign last month after Biden dropped out from the 2024 presidential race. Earlier this week, she picked Minnesota Governor Tim Walz (D) as her running mate.

US prosecutors accuse Hunter Biden of accepting payments to 'influence' government agencies

US President Joe Biden expressed serious doubts about a peaceful transition of power to Kamala Harris if Donald Trump loses the upcoming November election.

In a segment of a CBS interview aired on Wednesday (Aug 7), Biden said, he was "not confident at all" about peaceful transitions.

The 81-year-old Biden dropped out of the White House race in July and was replaced by Vice President Harris as the Democratic presidential nominee.

Biden said that Trump's hints on the campaign trail about not accepting a defeat should be taken seriously.

When asked if he believed there would be a calm transfer in January 2025, the US President replied, "If Trump loses, I'm not confident at all," Biden said during the interview set to air in full on Sunday (Aug 11), "He means what he says. We don't take him seriously. He means it—all the stuff about 'if we lose, there'll be a bloodbath,'" added Biden.

Notably, while campaigning earlier this year, Biden frequently brought up the fact that Trump's supporters stormed the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, after Biden beat him in the 2020 election.

Biden also regularly cited Trump as saying there would be a "bloodbath" if he lost, though Trump clarified that he was referring to the context of electric car imports from China.

However, Trump maintained his fake claim that the 2020 election was stolen from him, and in the interview, Biden accused the former president of trying to fit allies in key electoral positions in US states to manipulate counts if the same thing happened again.

"You can't love your country only when you win," said Biden.
