In the film, a young Foster starred alongside Michael Douglas and Johnny Whitaker as children who embark on a journey with their pet lion instead of parting with it. Foster recalled the presence of three lions on set: the main lion, a stunt lion, and a stand-in lion, with whom she had the frightening encounter.

"We finished a take and I was going up the hill and all I remember is seeing his mane come around and then he picked me up sideways, shook me in his mouth and turned me around," Foster shared.&nbsp;

Describing the chaos that ensued, Foster mentioned that everyone on set ran in the opposite direction, leaving her sideways as she watched them flee with their equipment. Initially confused, Foster thought it was an earthquake due to the shaking.

"Every single person on the crew was running in the opposite direction and I’m like sideways watching everybody — and they took their equipment, too. I’m watching everybody leave going, 'What’s happening'," she added.

Fortunately, the lion's trainer intervened, commanding the lion to "drop it." Remarkably, the well-trained lion obeyed, releasing Foster. However, Foster humorously added that the lion then "came after" her, placing a paw on her as if to say, "I got her."

There has never been a better time for women to enter the film industry, American superstar Jodie Foster told the Cannes festival on Wednesday, saying movies had too long been starved of female perspectives.

Addressing a large crowd of mostly young festival-goers in near-fluent French, she encouraged budding women filmmakers to seek their own truth and not try to please others.

"This is the moment for women to enter the industry," Foster said.

Although male domination of the industry had "not changed completely," she said, "there is now an awareness that it's been too long that we haven't heard stories told by women... This is the moment."

Foster received a lifetime achievement on Tuesday for her work that has included star turns in Taxi Driver and Bugsy Malone when she was a child, through to her Oscar-winning role in Silence of the Lambs. She has also directed several films, including Money Monster with George Clooney and Julia Roberts.

"I know it's a bit cliche to say 'tell your own stories'," Foster said. "But what I mean is: ask yourself questions about the truthfulness of things and whether they resonate within you, instead of pleasing others, be it the public or producers."

- 'Worst reason' -

Foster said many young actors entered the movie business saying "I want to be looked at in my pretty clothes" which she said was the "worst reason" for taking up the profession.

"For some people it can take years, unfortunately, to cast off that armour that separates you from authenticity on the screen," she said.

Talking about her own experience, Foster said Pedro Almodovar -- who presented her with her honorary Palme the day before -- was "the first feminist director for me".

"It was the first time I'd seen films that talked about women in an authentic way," she said of the legendary Spanish director, who has made women central to many of his films.

Foster called Almodovar an exception among male directors who "can't easily transpose themselves into a woman's body and ask themselves what the complicated and complex experience of a woman consists of."

Referring to her experience as a director, she said that there was still "confusion" in the male-dominated movie industry about how women exercise leadership positions.

"They don't understand how women lead because they've never seen women lead," she said of male producers.

"They don't know how to talk to women to convince them of something. They're afraid because they don't know how to deal with these situations."

The Cannes film festival has raised eyebrows for including just four films by women directors in the list of 24 movies vying for the top Palme d'Or prize in the main competition.

The gender balance is tilted less towards men in the festival's other competition categories, and the main jury this year is mostly female, including US star Maggie Gyllenhaal, Canadian-French singer Mylene Farmer and French-Senegalese director Mati Diop.

She turned down the opportunity to reprise the role in Sir Ridley Scott's 2001 sequel 'Hannibal', in which Julianne Moore appeared as Clarice opposite Sir Anthony Hopkins who returned as cannibal killer Dr. Hannibal Lecter.

Foster admits there have been talks about her coming back to Clarice but for her, that part is in the past.

Speaking on a podcast, she said: "There's been some stuff over the years about reprising (Clarice), but both Jonathan and I were both disappointed not to do the sequel. I have never watched that one."

'The Silence of the Lambs' &nbsp;which celebrated its 30-year anniversary in January 2021 - was a critical and commercial success and it earned Academy Award wins in the&nbsp;five categories: Best Picture, Best Director for Demme, Best Actor for Hopkins, Best Actress for Foster and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Hopkins recently confessed that he thought the movie would be a "children's story" before he read the script. The 83-year-old star recalled: "I was in London in 1989, doing a play called 'M. Butterfly'.

"My agent sent a script. He said, 'Why don’t you read this? It’s called ‘Silence of the Lambs.’' I said, 'Is it a children’s story?'

"It was a hot summer afternoon, and the script came over and I started reading it. After 10 pages, I phoned my agent. I said, 'Is this a real offer? I want to know. This is the best part I’ve ever read.' "

He explained: "I was naturally nervous, an Englishman — a limey like me, a Welshman — playing an American serial killer.

"And I remember [director] Jonathan when the camera picked me up, he said, 'Oh, my God. That’s it. Hopkins. You’re so weird!' And I said, 'Why, thank you.' And they wanted the lighting girl to come into my cell, and I said, 'What are you doing in my cell?' And [Jonathan] said, 'Oh, my God.' So I knew I had pressed the right button. Once you got that button, hold on to it — and go with it."
